Antigone was woman that has lived in a family stricken with bad luck. Her father, Oedipus, was actually her brother. He married his mother, which was the Queen of Thebes, without knowing he did. They had Antigone and three other children. They committed suicide when they found out what happen. Antigone became a woman who is not afraid of death, wants love and not hate, and has much pride.

In the story Antigone reveals that she is not afraid of death, "I am not afraid of danger, if it means death" (Prologue 80). She does whatever it takes to accomplish her goal. Even when she knew it was against the law by King Creon's order to cover her brother, Polyneices, she did. She did it because she thought it was the right thing to do.

Antigone wants love and does not want hate, "It is my nature to join it love, not hate" (I 11). She is willing to go against King Creon, her uncle, and die for the love of her brother. She disrespects Creon because she feels he is full of hate towards her brother. She feels that there are honors due all the dead. She feels that whenever she dies her brother will honor her.

Like King Creon, Antigone also has much pride. Antigone feels that no one can stand in her way including King Creon, "Creon is not strong enough to stand in my way" (Prologue 5). She refuses to let her sister, Ismene, to share the blame in committing the crime. Even though she has much pride she does not use her pride in a negative way. She uses her pride to accomplish a goal she feels is a positive effort.

Antigone has a strong will and is not afraid of death. She believes in peace, not hate. She also has much pride. These characteristics show that Antigone respects her

family and has pride that gives her the ability to do anything. I feel that she is a passionate and ambitious person that is full of honor and respect. I also feel that people should have the desire like Antigone to stand up for whatever they believe in.

Street Racing

It's 100 am on a Saturday morning. You lay in your bed just about to fall asleep when suddenly you hear a mighty roar. The air is now filled with the sound of hyped up, turbo charged horsepower coming from under the hoods of dozens of street cars. They quickly block off the streets creating an illegal drag strip a quarter mile long. The drivers of these customized rides get out and admire each others work before getting down to the business at hand- who has the fastest ride of them all. This sport is known as street racing. Now before you go jump in your car to join the millions involved in this sport there are some aspects you should look into. In order to race you have to know where the best places are to race. You should look into the dangers/legalities of street racing. The most important is your car. After you have looked into these aspects you are ready to join the street racer's world!

It's pretty obvious that in order for you to race you have to know where to race. There are many spots right here in Citrus County that harbor street racing, such as the Barge Canal in Yankeetown. If you get caught you get a ticket and your car gets impounded for thirty days, and everyday that it is impounded you have to pay fifteen dollars. The legal way to street race is to go to a track. The problem is there aren't very many tracks around. Every state has their hot spots. Some of the popular spots here in Florida are Orlando, the Bay area, Ft. Lauderdale, and Daytona Beach and other places. In California, some places are Kearny Villa, Trade, Firehouse, Old Sorrento, and Final Words. The names of these spots are nicknames for places in towns. (The spot, sdstreetracing.com)

So now, you know where to race, but have you thought about the dangers/legalities of street racing? When you street race illegally you are putting not only yourself in danger, but also the lives of many others especially when you race on public highways without blocking it off first. If you aren't on a legal track then, yes, it is illegal. (Tracks, Super Street June 000) There has been many of people sentenced to jail time because of street racing. In July of 001, 1-year old Arturo Ortiz was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for hitting another vehicle and killing the driver and his daughter and injuring two other young passengers, while he was drag racing down a Santa Ana, California, highway. In San Diego alone there as been 14 deaths and 4 serious injuries that were attributed to by illegal street racing. Race Legal programs are being started up all over the country to try and stop all deaths from street racing. The people that do street race on public roadways know it illegal but continue to do it. One reason is that it is an adrenaline rush to be out on the streets because you are at the risk of getting caught. Police are cracking down hard on street racers. The one thing that police don't understand is that these people are going to race. Law enforcement can do everything possible to write tickets and put them in jail, but they are still going to race. It's an addiction and it's never going to stop. (Cops give street racer's a hand, ABCNEWS.com)

What is your favorite car? BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, VW, Benz, Audi, Lexus Mitsubishi…. The most loved car out the tracks is Honda. The Acura is very popular too. They have great track time. The best of all time is the Aston Martin. It is the rarity of import cars. (Car, RacingLines.com) Loaded with Nitrous Oxide engine boosters, modified intake valves, supersized engines, and a host of other custom improvements, the best cars can top 100 mph even on the short one-eighth mile track. Also make sure your car looks good because looks are very important. You don't want to be out on the track with an old rusted and dented car. Some cars have a $000 custom paint job done to them. (Cops give street racer's a hand, ABCNEWS.com) The cars that you will most likely see in the tracks are Honda, Acura, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota. Maybe if you are lucky you may see an occasional Mazda RX-7. ( The Car, sdstreetracing.com) It seems to be a battle of who has the phattest ride. Everybody wants to have a tricked out ride. Jermine Dupri told the U.S. on an MTV show, "You aren't anything without a Bentley." Ja Rule tries to outdo them all with his rides. Jermine Dupri drives a $00,000 Bentley, but it's a hard fact that most people can't afford such a luxury. Remember, having a nice car is the most important aspect in street racing, because without the car, well you aren't going to be going anywhere any time soon!

Street racing… There are many aspects to consider before you go hopping into a huge and popular sport. Like, where to race, the dangers/legalities of it, and most important, the car you are racing. Do you think you can hang in a racer's world? Well, like wise man once said, "If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the back porch."

As parents seek too find the best education for their kids, home schooling is becoming very popular. In 184 the U.S. Department of Education estimated that approximately fifteen thousand students were home schooled. This number is increasing between two hundred thousand and three hundred thousand students in 188. As of today, the United States has between 1. million and 1.7 million students being homed schooled in grades K-1. In the past, if you were home schooled it was because of religious beliefs; however, now it is used for religious values, beliefs, and political viewpoints.

Families choose home schooling due to numerous reasons. Van Galen places home schoolers into two district categories ideologues and pedagogues. The ideologues state that they home school their children because they object to what public and private schools are teaching and they want to strengthen their relationship with their children. The ideologue parents have certain beliefs and values that are religiously based. They also have a concern that public and private schools don't provide appropriate moral or ethical instruction.

Pedagogues are home schooled because their parents want their children education to benefit their child's learning style. They feel like schools sort, select and label children, based on what they see and not based on the child's ability.

The following are strengths of home schooling. Research indicates that when there is high parental involvement in the child's educational studies, the child becomes successful and reaches their full potential. Parents feel that by home schooling their child, they are building a tight bond with their kids.

Cheap Custom Essays on Home Schooling

Critics argue children that are home schooled are not exposed to social life and will not be about to socialize properly later in life. This has been cited as the major drawback of home schooling. However, home schooling parents argue that their kids socialization process have both positive and negative forms of socialization. They feel like their child's involvement in other activities such as sporting events is another place for socialization and therefore, they are not isolated from the real world. There have been several studies done that indicate that home school student's social development is comparable to or more advanced than public school students. In Public schools, students endure many negative learning experiences, whereas home schooling provides the supportive environment of a loving and concerned family.

Home schooling does have limitations. Critics feel that students that are home schooled do not get enough exposure in every day social life. Home schooled parents disagree with this and insist that their child get enough social life through extra curricular activities. The biggest concern with home schooling is making sure that whoever is teaching that child is a qualified adult.

Home schooling is playing a significant role in the American child's education. It has proved to be successful enough to be considered a legitimate form of education. There are still some unanswered questions dealing with home schooling. However, one big plus for supporting home schooling is the direct involvement of the parents in their child's education. This way, the parents are more in tune with their child's needs and can strive to meet them.

I am not opposed to home schooling, but I feel it does have some drawbacks. Children who are home schooled are not around other children their own age on a daily basis. Learning to get along with peers and dealing with peer pressure are things they are missing out on. They do not learn how to deal with these problems which become harder to deal with as they get older. In a social environment you have leaders and followers and these are determined through social interaction. Home schooler's are neither and must try to find their role status later in life. This makes it hard for them to fit in with other children in extra curricular activities.

Home schoolers miss out on the ability to participate in school sports and other school related clubs, such as 4-H, tennis, softball, football, Y-club. This helps children learn how to get along with other children and it also allows them to go and see new places and things.

Home schooling cannot teach children how to work with others. Also, they miss out on time management skills that are taught in a standard classroom setting. Not being able to work with others and lack of time management skills can have employment consequences.

My biggest concern with home schooling is the teacher, which is usually the parent. Does the parent have the skills and background necessary to provide the home schooler with a good education? Can he or she teach proper math skills or provide in-depth coverage of necessary courses?

Lawsons funny stories are the best. Do you agree???

Reading Henry Lawson short stories was such a delight. He truely made the bush come to life within the stories he wrote. He used humour in many of the stories but not in all of them. I dont agree that Lawsons funny stories were the best because my favourite stories in the book were the stories of Joe Wilson and his life in the bush. These stories about Joe Wilson and his life and family really touched me and helped me to appreciate the comfortable life that I live.Lawson doesnt use humour in The Joe Wilson stories because Joe is telling us about his life the good and the hardships he has delt with its not about humour but purely simply about life and the Life that Joe and Mary lead. What I love about Joe Wilson in these stories is the love that he has towards his wife and his son. In Brightons sister in law he is depicted in this story as a loving father and husband by his actions and what he says in the story for instance when talking about his son He was a wonderful chap Yes, I know all about parents thinking that their child is the best in the world. This really touched me. Lawson uses Joe as a narrator so that we get a better feel of his life. He is sharing his life with the readers.Humour is always good but when a story can really touch you and make you feel something deep and meaningful it truely is a great story. Lawson doesnt use humour in The Joe Wilson stories because Joe is telling us about his way of life the good aspects and the hardships he has delt with. Its not about humour but purely simply about life and the Life that Joe and Mary lead. Brightens sister in law is definately my favourite story in the whole book because this story tells the hardships of bush life and how its hard to make money and that you have to work extra hard to make a living Joe said in the story Before this whenever I made a few punds id sink a shaft somewhere, prospecting for goldbut Mary never let me rest till she had talked me out of it. Also Joes worries about his son in the bush I was scared now.I remembered a neighbour of ours had a little girl die, and when she was going she saidTake the blankets off me,muvver im dying. These are true emotions and feelings and these are the main reasons why i dont agree that Lawsons funny stories are the best. Having and showing love in a story also touches me because I am a sucker for love stories and messeges of love within stories. In the humourless Joe Wilson stories Joe and his wife Mary have alot of hope and optimism even after all the hardships they had delt with because they are very close and stand by and support each other and their is alot of Love there. They love each other very much.As you can see I have made it clear the reasons why I believe in my opinion that Lawsons funny stories are not the best because I was much more moved by the Joe Wilson stories which didnt contain humour but just his way of life.

Authors of short stories use elements of style to make their stories interesting. There are many elements of style used by authors. Irony and theme are often used in short stories. This is clearly shown in O. Henry's short stories such as "The Gift of the Magi," "The Lickpenny Lover," "The Midsummer Knights Dream," "The Cop and the Anthem," and "Ships." The short stories of O. Henry use the element of theme to bring about ironic endings.

In "The Gift of the Magi" there are elements of theme throughout the entire story. One example of theme in the story is that poverty affected both the main characters Jim and Della. Jim and Della both lived in a poor neighborhood with very little money. They both wanted to get each other a very meaningful Christmas present. Another element of theme in this story is that Jim and Della realize how much they love each other. Eugene Garcia fines that "In this trite little tale of mutual self-sacrifice between husband and wife, O. Henry crystallized dramatically what the world in all it's stored up wisdom knows to be of fundamental value in ordinary family life"(short story criticisms 1). The theme of this story should always be kept in mine that love is more important then money.

Another example of an element of style is irony. Each person selling something valuable to them shows irony in "The Gift of the Magi". Della had only saved up one dollar and eighty-seven cents to get Jim a Christmas present. Since she did not have enough money she went to a store and sold her hair. Jim at the same time went to a store to sell his watch for money for Della. They both got each other gifts with the money they had gotten from selling their items. The gifts that they sold each had something to do with what they had gotten each other. Della had gotten Jim a medallion for his watch, while Jim had gotten Della beautiful combs for her hair. Arthur Voss finds that it is ironic in "O. Henry's famous story of the young married couple, each of whom sells a treasured possession to obtain money to buy a Christmas present for the other" (short story criticisms 114). The ironic conclusion of the story is that both Della and Jim were unable to use the gifts they had gotten each other.

The short story "A Lickpenny Lover" had a similar theme to "The Gift of the Magi." The reoccurring theme in "A Lickpenny Lover" was that money was not everything. Masie is a young shop girl who is attractive and hardworking. Irving Carter a millionaire asks Masie on a date. He had tried to impress her with his money. Instead Masie did not think of Carter as a different person because of the money he had. She still saw him as a regular man who asked her on a date. Masie saw Carter as a wealthy man who did not like to use his money. Masie on the other hand did not like him more instead she liked him less for not being more generous with it.

Irony had played a big role in the story "A Lickpenny Lover." One example of irony that occurs often was the misunderstanding of honest love. Garcia stated that in the story "Maize is incapable of knowing honest love from dishonest, and she is in consequence one of his least interesting women"(short story criticisms 1). When Masie was asked by Carter to get married she did not take him seriously. Garcia thought that "Masie even with her eyes open, rejects, her wealthy suitor because she thinks that his promise to take her to faraway places only means that he wanted her to marry him and go down to Coney island for a wedding tour"(short story criticisms 1). Masie only thought that Carter was using a come on line towards her. This just shows how ignorant masie was when judging Carter for being cheap, when he really was planning to take her to Europe.

The Theme that is identified in the story "The Midsummer Knights Dream" is that Mary married for love and not for money. This is shown throughout the entire story by the letter that Marry wrote to her husband describing how much she had missed him. Garcia points out that in the story "There is a contrast between Gaines dream of his courtship days in a mountain resort and the letter he receives from his wife as he sits sweating in a hot office building"(short story criticisms 11). Gaines is in the office rather than in the country because he can not afford it. He knows his wife enjoys it so he saves up to send her there. Since Gaines could not have what he wanted he made it less important to him. An example of this occurs when he is saying that he "hates the country in the summer and that the city is a much nicer resort". He only says this because he is unable to go there.

The irony in "The Midsummer Knights Dream" is that Gaines really liked the country and missed it. Gaines missed the country because he used to enjoy fishing, but now since he can not go to the country he says he does not miss fishing. He only stayed in the city because could not afford to go to the country. Gaines decided to make the best of the situation by saying that the city was the best summer resort in the world to his assistant Adkins. Adkins could not understand that Gaines felt this way because he was unable to have something he wanted. He was used to getting what he wanted and a perfect example of this was his wife Mary.

Another story "The Cop and the Anthem" has shown a similar theme throughout the story. A important lesson learned in this story is that if you wish for something bad enough it might just come true. The main character of Soapy shows this. Donald Peel finds that in this story "in which a hobo tries unsuccessfully to get arrested so that he can get food and shelter and then is arrested after he decides that he will give up his vagabond ways"(The American Consciousness 0). This shows that Soapy could not change because of the circumstances he was surrounded by. He really wanted to change for the better, but he was unable to because he was homeless and had a poor look about him.

In the story "The Cop and the Anthem" the ironic element which is shown is that when Soapy is ready to change he got what he originally wanted which was to get arrested and go to jail. Ironically Soapy was in a church when he had decide to change his mind about his direction of his life. Then all of a sudden a policeman had arrested him for trespassing and gave him six months in jail. Soapy had got arrested unintentionally, when at first he wanted to get arrested. He finally got what he really wanted, which was to go to jail, to eat and have a place to live for six months. This proves that a person who wants to change can not always have the power to do it at that particular moment. In order to change it usually takes time; Soapy had found it out the hard way.

In the story "Ships" an example of theme is how the main character Johnny tries to overcome his poverty and change his position in life. He devises a plan to get rich quick for himself and the shop owner Mr. Hemstetter. Kent Bales explains that "In order to sell shoes, for example, a character imports cockleburs into the near paradise of Anchuria, O. Henry's fictional Honduras"(American Writers Supplement 40). The cockleburs were at one point not selling to anyone and Johnny was loosing money. O. Henry would use made up places in his writings to help develop the theme as he did in "Ships". Therefore that is why he had chose a poor fictitious country in Central America. He shows how this can possibly happen in real life to people who want to get rich.

The Irony in the "Ships" is that Johnny who is poor and the factory owner, who is also poor soon, become rich in a short amount of time. When a company carrying cockleburs come to the island looking to sell them. The factories owner buys them, then realizes know one is going to buy them. Bales states that "The enterprising exporter of the original barrel of cockleburs shows up with two ships full of the no longer necessary seeds, expecting to sell them to the factory he imagines must somehow use them"(American Writers Supplement). Johnny and the factory owner pout the cockleburs down on the beach. They put them down on the beach in order for people to buy shoes. After they make a lot of money Johnny leaves the island. The guy who grows the cockleburs now was stuck with much to many of them. Johnny now out of the country, because he realized that there was no more demand of shoes so he got out while he still would make money. Now everybody in they country had shoes to walk around in so there feet would not hurt.

Elements of style are important devices in helping authors put great emphasis on important issues in their stories. It also helps prove an author's point while writing a story. This is shown throughout many of O. Henrys short stories by the example of poverty. O. Henry has put great emphasis on the two important elements of style in his short stories, which is theme and irony. In the stories written by O. Henry many of them have shown different examples how the element of theme came to bring about ironic endings.

Valuing and Leveraging Differences. (VLD) Practices and reinforces engaged listening with others. Seeks out those with different learning/perceiving styles for advice and perspective. Creates teams with diverse backgrounds and skills. Acknowledges and rewards the work of diverse teams in a public setting. Creates an environment for sharing different views with others.

If I can markedly improve this skill, my 100 grand will be money well spent. This was an issue brought up repeatedly, by family and friends, in my 60 degree feedback. I come from small town that is % German Irish. I worked in an investment bank with fifty other white males predominately from the Midwest or South. In addition to the obvious homogeneity in my comrades' appearance and backgrounds, I've always gravitated towards working in teams with people who favor rationality over creativity and logic over emotion.

Many if not most of the problems we encounter at Wharton and in the real world are nebulous, interconnected and often ambiguous. These complex problems require increasingly diverse viewpoints to properly size up the scope and breadth of the issues at hand. I understand this axiom but sometimes remain rooted in my "third-grade" mentality of right answers, accepted procedures and smart people.

I want to not only understand difference, but really use them to get a better result than otherwise possible. My learning team will be instrumental in developing this skill and providing me with the requisite feedback to know how I am doing. We are all very different, certainly all rational and logical, but still approach problems with a very different mindset.

History Report

My report is about whether or not the United States is vulnerable or not. Since September 11 we have improved security but, United States seaports, energy systems and food and water supplies are still very vulnerable to terrorists, according to government officials. Officials say if we do not deal with these problems now that we will probably regret it. They expect greater casualties and widespread disruption to daily life as well as to the economy. The reason this problem was brought up was because of the possibility of us going to war with Iraq and that Saddam Hussein might threaten the use of weapons of mass destruction in the United States.

Federal screeners are being hired at airports, but only the tiniest

percentage of containers, ships, trucks, and trains that enter the United States are subject to examination and weapons of mass destruction could be easily hidden among the cargo. CIA Director, George Tenet believes that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network will attempt to strike again against the United States sometime soon. A year has passed since a major terrorist attack last occurred and there are already signs that Americans are lapsing back into complacency.

Now we are worried that terrorists will destroy our main bridges or key sections of tracks, but transportation officials promised to patrol trains, tracks, and stations and are asking people to look out for suspicious behavior and people. The eyes and ears of train employees and passengers are just as important for security as the information from the federal government. Information obtained from al-Qaida prisoners is what this warning is based on, as well as the photographs of United States railroad engines, cars and crossings. The FBI urged federal agencies overseeing transportation, energy and agricultural industries to be prepared.

Amtrak has taken this warning seriously. They have taken steps to increase the security on their trains. Amtrak has a police force of more than 00 members and are focusing on securing the infrastructure of the 457 mile network that extends from Washington, D.C., to Boston. They have taken other steps inside the trains and stations. They stated that these would not be noticeable by the passengers and they declined to describe them.

Some officials believe that the attack by the al-Qaida may involve other symbols of the United States economy. Information from the prisoners suggested that the terrorist attack may involve our oil tankers. This would be a serious attack on the global petroleum industry. The attack on an oil tanker off the coast of Yemen earlier this month could have been al-Quida.

The United States may well be the target of another terrorist attack. The question at this point is whether or not we are prepared for it. Most believe that if or when there is another attack on our country, it could result in possibly even greater casualties and widespread disruption to the daily life and the economy of the United States.

Anne Bradstreet was a woman in a man's world. She was ahead of her times with her knowledge, understanding, ideas, and writing abilities. She was the author of many works and only few made it to print during her lifetime. The only reason that these works were printed was because her brother-in-law, against her will, took her works to England and had them printed. In no work of hers is her struggle to have herself and other women recognized then in "The Prologue."

In the first stanza Bradstreet expresses her feeling that her work is simple. She states that she wants to leave the recording of history up to others who she believes have more skill. "Let poets and historians set these forth, /My obscure lines shall not so dim their worth." (Pg 47) In this quote Bradstreet is expressing her desire not to have her writings trivialize the events of the past. She would much rather have these events honored in the way she believes fit than she herself write about them.

In the second stanza, Bradstreet refers to Guillaume Bartas as a great writer. He is a writer the she enjoys reading, "But when my wond'ring eyes and envious heart/Great Bartas sugared lines do but read o'er." (Pg 47) Bradstreet shares her feeling that Bartas can write about anything in any style he chooses because of his talent. She also allows us to see her view of herself by sharing that she feels she has a simpler writing style because of her limited skills as a writer.

The third stanza is another look into Bradstreet's view of her own writing. "My foolish, broken, blemished Muse so sings, /And this to mend no art is able, /'Cause nature made it so irreparable." (Pg 47) In this quote Bradstreet is expressing her feelings that not much should be expected of her writings because her skills have so many flaws. She is saying that these flaws in her writing skills are reflected very clearly in her works and just like we don't expect beautiful music from a broken instrument the same view should be taken when reading her writings.

Order Custom Essay on Analysis of Anne Bradstreet's "The Prologue"

The fourth stanza is where Bradstreet shares her feelings that her work will never be perfect. "Art can do much, but this maxim's most sure/A weak or wounded brain admits no cure." (Pg 48) Bradstreet uses this quote to explain to us that the problems with her writing skills run very deep. They are not something you can fix easily, if even at all.

Bradstreet displays her anger for those people that do not respect her work in the fifth stanza. She is angry towards those who feel that she can't write well because she is a woman. "Who says my hand a needle better fits, /A poet's pen all scorn I should thus wrong." (Pg 48) Bradstreet is determined to prove wrong those who believe that her gender has anything to do with her abilities as a writer. She is also out to correct those who feel her good writings are stolen from men or just a stroke of luck.

In the sixth stanza, Bradstreet refers to the Greeks who used women as their muses for the arts. She talks of how they were much more sympathetic to women and their abilities in the arts. She talks of one of the nine female muses but eventually refers to the times when the Greeks no longer looked upon women so kindly. "But this weak knot they will full soon untie. /The Greeks did nought, but play the fools and lie." (Pg 48)

In the seventh stanza Bradstreet reveals her almost contrary belief in her place in society. While she strives to be recognized as a writer, she also shares that she understands her domestic place. On the other hand she asks to just be allowed to be who she is. Even though her place is below men, she still wants recognition and respect for her works. "Let Greeks be Greeks, and women what they are;/Men have precedency and still excel." (Pg 48)

In the eighth and final stanza, she expresses her desires if her works are by chance recognized. "Give me Thyme or parsley wreath, I ask no bays;/This mean and unrefined ore of mine." (Pg 48) Bradstreet is sharing her wanting of something useful to her everyday life if ever she is rewarded for her life. Instead of the traditional crown or laurel used for male poets, she would much rather have spiced she can use in her cooking. This is also another good example of how Bradstreet not only wants to be recognized but also understands her domestic duties or cooking and cleaning.

Overall, Anne Bradstreet's poem is a sharing or her desire to be recognized and respected as a female writer or her time. She was ahead or her time and her dreams and desires were finally recognized well after her death. Her poems are still read and enjoyed by millions or people around the world and her works will not be forgotten.

Ecclesiastes 1

For those who havent yet seen the movie, about Schmidt, I am about to render seeing that movie a useless and vain exercise.

For Jack Nicholson plays a man just retired. He has risen to be the vice president of his insurance company, and now watches the clock tick down to 5pm, and leaves his office soon after.

His office is all packed up with boxes of files.

Order College Papers on Life Under the SunEcclesiastes 1

At his retirement speech, his replacement is chosen to give the speech.

He is a young upstart who thanks him for his work and help in getting him settled, but then the upstart quickly goes on to speak about himself and how he is settling in to the job at hand.

Schmidt then returns to the office to see if there are any questions the upstart has for him after serving the company for 40 years. The upstart says No, Schmidt had provided good information on the handover to the upstart. And then he says

Look, at the time, can you ride down the elevator with me.

Schmidt is now shunted to the side. And as he walks away from this multi storied building that had been his life, he looks over to the garbage area, and sees…..

He sees all the files that he had passed on to the upstart stacked haphazardly beside the garbage. All to be tossed out.

His lifes work. Now to be taken to the local landfill and dumped with all the other rubbish.

For what has Schmidt worked for? What was his purpose in life? This movie brilliantly asks this question.

As you think about life, what is life like? Or let me ask an even crueller question, what is life for?

As you look at life in this world, or if you want to use a phrase from our passage, life under the sun, what conclusions can you draw about what this life is for?

You can look at the wise ones of this world. Most people would take Kerry Packer as a wise man. But you may or may not know that after Kerry's near death incident at Rosehill Racecourse, he had a near death experience, where his interpretation of that experience has led him to conclude that there in nothing on the other side of death. Here is the wise mans conclusion.

His reference point is himself. He is the centre of his world. His understanding of the world is generated from what he can see and research and understand.

There was another man like that in the ancient world. He wrote a book called Ecclesiastes. He looks at the world through his own eyes and records for us the result.

How can such a depressing book as this find its way into the bible.

Because it reflects for us the truth. It reflects to us a logical and not often faced truth. That life in this world is utterly meaningless.

These arent just the words of a nobody. These are the words of a notable person. Exactly how he is a son of David is not absolutely clear.

King Solomon is the most likely candidate, and well see this as the book moves on. But the author is strangely reserved in giving us his exact identity.

Is it all from the one author? Eccles. 1 (NIV)

Not only was the Teacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs.

Clearly not from the one author.

That he is a descendant of David, is there in the first verse. But its in the bible. And for the next several weeks were going to struggle with its message.

His conclusion is enough to make us ask a question. What is life about?

Eccles. 1 (NIV)

Meaningless! Meaningless!

says the Teacher.

Utterly meaningless!

Everything is meaningless.

Personally, I like the RSV way of putting it. Vanity of vanities. Everything is vanity.

Life is a vain or meaningless circle under the sun.

And the teachers evidence is what he can work out.

Eccles. 1- (NIV)

What does man gain from all his labor

at which he toils under the sun?

4 Generations come and generations go,

but the earth remains forever.

5 The sun rises and the sun sets,

and hurries back to where it rises.

6 The wind blows to the south

and turns to the north;

round and round it goes,

ever returning on its course.

7 All streams flow into the sea,

yet the sea is never full.

To the place the streams come from,

there they return again.

8 All things are wearisome,

more than one can say.

The eye never has enough of seeing,

nor the ear its fill of hearing.

What has been will be again,

what has been done will be done again;

there is nothing new under the sun.

Theres really no point in going on with this sermon really. Not quite sure why, suppose Id better.

I dont know if Pink Floyd had read Ecclesiastes. But there song, Time fits in very well.

And you run and you run to catch up to the sun but its sinking. And racing around to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same in a relative way, but yourre older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Many in our society live with no point in mind, and dont experience the examined lifestyle.

Yet here is one who has examined his own lifestyle and come up with an answer.

Eccles. 11-14 (NIV)

I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. [1] I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men! [14] I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

His answer is that there is no answer under the sun. Its come from the hand of God. He isnt an atheist. He acknowledges that God exists.

Yet by his own resources there is no answer. Other than recognizing that God has given us the ability to have insight. And in that insight, comes the knowledge that we cant work it out.

We cant even straighten something that is crooked.

Eccles. 115 (NIV)

What is twisted cannot be straightened;

what is lacking cannot be counted.

Not quite sure what the second part of the verse means. But talk to a panel beater about cars that have been in smashes.

They can do a pretty good repair. But they are never quite the same as the straight article.

There is something twisted about our world. And we cant quite make it out.

Eccles. 116-18 (NIV)

I thought to myself, Look, I have grown and increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge. [17] Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

[18] For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;

the more knowledge, the more grief.

As smart as we humans are, and as smart as this teacher was, and as much as he studied and pondered and tried to work things out.

But he came to the point of learning that even the understanding of understanding, plus the understanding of madness and folly were both a chasing after the wind.

Have you ever asked yourself, whats the point? Why am I doing what Im doing?

Is there some new invention that I can come up with? Is there some way that I can make my mark in this world, and not be one of the crowd?

This really smart teacher came to this wonderful conclusio. The more he understood, the greater the pain. When he thought about his life, there was no point.

Reminds me a bit of Kerry Packer, arguably the richest Australian. Here he has children, one of whom has been involved in the OneTell Fiasco. With its multi million dollar losses.

Whats going to happen to Kerrys millions when he dies? Who knows? But hes worked out what lifes about?

Hes worked out that there is no life after death.

After his near death experience, he knows from his own insight, and by looking at the world from his point of view, what its all about.

There aint nothing there.

Thats what you and I have to look forward to.

Every year is getting shorter. Never seem to find the time. Plans that either come to naught, or a half of page of scribbled lines.

The time is gone, the song is over. Thought Id something more to say.

Do you believe this? Many in our world, the rich, the middle class and the poor live life under the sun.

Yet, there is another perspective. There is a life with the son. Under the sun, that, is under the big red ball that hangs in the sky, we are left powerless to break the endless cycle of life and death, life and death, life and death, life and death.

Under the Son, there is only life.

Who can tell what the future holds.

But its your choice and my choice.

We can choose under the sun, or under the Son.

Under the sun, it doesnt matter whether you love or hate, live or die, are wise or foolish.

Under the Son, we have a hope for the future, and a purpose for living as the sons and daughters of the living God.

For the Son has broken the cycle, and provided us with purpose in him.

These series of sermons though are going to challenge some of us more than what we want to be challenged.

They are going to push us to think through what do we in fact rely on.

May God help us face the question, so that we may fully rely on his answer.

In Susan Glaspells play, Trifles, the birdcage and the bird are significant because they are the only evidence of a motive for Mrs. Wright killing Mr. Wright. The bird in a cage represents the last piece of Minnie Fosters soul trapped inside the life of Mrs. Wright. When Mr. Wright wrung the birds neck, he killed the only joy Mrs. Wright had in her lonely life. Mr. Wright also killed Minnie Fosters spirit.

Mrs. Hale knew Mrs. Wright when she was still MInnie Foster and even said, No, Mr. Wright wouldnt like the bird - a thing that sang. She used to sing. He killed that, too. Mrs. Hales response to the birdcage and the bird is strong because she sees them not only as evidence of a motive for the murder of Mr. Wright, but as evidence of Mr. Wright being a hard man. Mrs. Hale points out how awfuk still it would be to have years and years of nothing, then a bird to sing to you, then to have the birds song taken away. This comment prompts Mrs. Peters to remember what stillness is. Even though she understands what Mrs. Hale is saying about the awful stillness, she still comments, The law has got to punish crime. She remembers when she was a little girl and a boy killed her kitten and how badly she wanted to hurt him, and understands what a strong motive the wringing of the birds neck is. She also believes that the men might not see the significance in the dead bird, saying as if that could have anything to do with - with - wouldnt they laugh!

My response to the birdcage and the dead bird are strong because I feel that they are strong evidence of motive for the motive for the murder of Mr. Wright, because he was such a tyrant. He had already broken Minnie Fosters spirit, but that wasnt enough for him. He had to take away anything that might make Mrs. Wright happy. He only wanted her to be his servant, and all of her attention had to be focused on him. The birds singing would have diverted her attention from him, so he wrung - its - neck.

The development of dance changed with the development of dance costumes. Royal Patronage, fashions and professional dancers played important roles in the development of Dance and Dancewear. Ballet was initially a combination of professional acrobatics and folk dance with an aristocratic grace performed for the leisure of the monarchy.

Men's clothing wasn't very practical, they wore heavily brocaded tunics and coats which were very stiff and breeches limited movement of the knees. Heavy wigs and swords to the waist reduced movement while small heeled shoes disabled the pointe of feet. Woman wore clothing even more unsuitable for dancing, stiff lacy long sleeved bodices and panniered skirts. This shows us that the importance of dancewear should not be overlooked because dancers were less skilled then they are now and so were not bothered by bulky costumes.

During the early 1700s, fashions in ballet costumes began to change. The great dancer Marie Camargo shortened her ballet skirt to above her ankles, and removed the heels from her dancing slippers. Allowing her ankles on show meant full appreciation of intricate footwork and complex jumps. She believed that Dance "should be natural and expressive". Ballet technique grew increasingly spectacular, and the skirts became shorter and shorter. This overcome the problem of wearing "caleons de precaution" (precautionary drawers) to keep their legs covered in the resulting whirls. Marie Salle further shocked audiences with the show of more skin, by discarding petticoats and replacing with a flimsy Muslim dress, and this I feel was very important in revolutionising the performance of dance in opera houses as it enabled the development of gliding leaps we see today which also attracted more audiences.

Start drawing pictures on the board

An innovating designer at the Paris Opera named Maillot overcome the heavy weight of these clothing by introducing tights. Believe it or not but these thin garments of nylon revolutionised the world of dance forever. Tights allowed a significant degree of freedom that dancers had never before experienced. Dances were no longer limited to simple elegant steps, but complex as well as dramatic athletic movement became possible, allowing ballet to move far beyond its previous limited boundaries.

The bell-shaped Romantic dress of the mid-1800s gave way to the famous tutu at the end of the 1th century. Connoisseurs of ballet, the Russians also wanted to see the new technical feats and fancy footwork of their ballerinas. The new long, floppy, 16 layer tutus reached to the knee and allowed the female dancers much greater mobility in such technically demanding ballets as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Paquita. George Balanchines athletic choreography led to the creation of the shorter powder-puff tutu that is worn in Symphony . These tutus allow the entire leg to be seen and so today, the standard ballet skirt, the tutu, ends well above the knees.

To enhance the image of the ballerina as light and elusive, the Pointe shoe was introduced, enabling women to dance on the tips of their toes. The tips of these shoes are made with layers of cloth and glue, the layers strengthen the tips, giving the dancer support. Each dancer fitted with the Pointe shoes must have good strong feet leg muscles, good placement and a correct ballet technique. Without these shoes imagine how uncomfortable it was when early 1800s dancers wore small heeled firm shoes that they would again use as everyday shoes?

Modern dancers wore the new leotard for their practice wear. Invented by the trapeze artist Jules Leotard, the original leotard consisted of a close-fitting suit of knitted jersey, which reached to the wrists and ankles; the womans version came with a short fringed skirt. Today, the leotard is the accepted uniform of dancers around the world and is designed in many attractive patterns, colours and materials.

Bare legs were never very popular with dancers for practice sessions since the leg muscles must be kept continually warm. Today dancers wear not only leotards and tights but also wool leg warmers and/or plastic pants over their tights in order to keep their muscles warm and supple.

The best ballet costumes are light and simple. They show all the lines of the body and never interfere with the dancers movements. Even in historical ballets, freedom of movement is more important than costumes that look exactly like the clothing of the time. I'm sure you all will agree that dancewear is a important part of the development in Ballet as it has enabled great dancers and choreographers to create techniques that make it look as though heavenly figures glide effortlessly across the stage and open up new possibilities in Ballet as an art form.

Internal Systems Review Paper Project

-Computed Tomography Imaging (CT Scan, CAT Scan)

Computed Axial Tomography, also known as CT scanning (Computed Tomography Imaging), was developed in the early to mid 170s by Hounsfield and is now available at over 0,000 locations throughout the world. CAT is a painless type of X-rayknown to provide the best images of bone, blood and soft tissues.

An X-ray tube, rotating around a specific area of the body, delivers an appropriate amount of X radiation for the tissue and takes pictures of that part of the internal anatomy from different angles. More recent scanners have a stationary X-ray tube and use deflecting coils and special reflectors to position the X-ray beam. A computer program is then used to form a composite, readable image. This x-ray tube that rotates in a circle around the patient making many slices of images like a large donut standing up (called the gantry) on its side with a table going though the center of it. The patient lies on the table as the table is moved slowly into the Scanner gantry.

There are no special preparations required for a CAT Scan, unless the physician wishes to use an injection of a special dye (contrast medium) or a sedative before the test. Patient are generally asked not to eat or drink for about four to six hours before the test, in case an injection of a special dye required. Otherwise, no special preparation is asked for the test. Also because of the involvement of the use of X-rays, pregnant women should not have an abdominal or chest CAT scan done. The test takes about 10minutes, though in some cases it can take up to an hour. Immediately before the test, patients will change into a hospital gown, remove any watches or jewelry and sign a consent form. The contrast medium will be administered, if necessary, into the patient's vein. Injection of the dye may produce a warm, flushed feeling for several minutes, it is normal and will soon go away. After the test, they are encouraged to allow someone else to drive them from the testing site, because patients have taken a tranquilizer, or they can return their routines. A radiologist will interpret each of the final three-dimensional images and then send them to the patient's cardiologist, who will go over the results with the patient at a follow-up appointment.

There are usually no side effects to this procedure. Allergic reactions to the dye usually occur immediately, but are unusual. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling and difficulty breathing. Since the IV contrast is injected with a motor driven power injector and so extravasations from the vein may cause irritation in the skin. Also a risk of allergy to the iodinated contrast material resulting in hives, itching, wheezing, shock etc. Pretreatment with Benadryl and Prednisone usually eliminates reaction in allergic patients.

Since its invention some 5 years ago, CT imaging has seen massive advances in technology and clinical performance. Today CT enables the diagnosis of a wider array of illness and injury than ever before. CAT scanning

Miss Saigon

As a drama trip, my class went to go and see the production of Miss Saigon in Birmingham. There were many designs and costumes, different characters and music, sound effects and lighting. I found this production very interesting and imaginative. I could clearly see that a lot of time and thought went into making it, and it was all shown through the final performance.

The story of Miss Saigon was all about the war and Americans coming over to help the Vietnamese. Many of them slept around with the women and got them pregnant. The Vietnamese rejected the children because they looked to American, and the Americans rejected the children because they looked to Vietnamese. One American Sergeant fell in love with a Vietnamese woman in a club, and got married. He flew back to America and couldn't get her passage. She had a child and two years later their paths crossed once more, and she was only to find that he had remarried. He would not take the child, as he believed that a child should be with its mother, so it concluded that she gave her life, to give her child one in America, were it would be safe for him, even if she could not be with him or the man she loved.

Costume

Cheap University Papers on Miss Siagon

Kim Kims costume at the start was a plain white dress to show virginity and that she was innocent. She would go around shy and lonely. She would not be like the other girls who picked on her. You tell her out of the crowed of girls as she would be wearing a long white, covering dress and the other girls would be wearing bikinis. The way she dressed also reflected the way she was acted. All the other girls would be going around knowing what they are doing and are really confidant. But with Kim, she would be shy and unconfident, and you could tell she didn't want to be there. Every time a man would come over and talk to her, she would hunch up and hold her dress tight in a ball. The men she was with were also different with her because of the dress, when she was talking to them, she was saying that she would make a good wife and mother, but they just laughed back in her face and looked at her dress and would make jesters that she is ridicules and silly.

Later, when we see that she and the American Sergeant are in love, she is wearing very grand cloths, stands up right and it more assertive. She is happy and smiley, laughs and jokes. We see that the roles have changed, because all the other girls from the club are there, and they do not seem happy, because she has what they want, a good man and love. They all wear the same sort of outfits as Kim, but they are different, they are not as happy cloths, were as Kim and her colours are.

Later on again, when we see Kim, when the man she loves is back in America, her cloths have again changed. She has not a man to support her at this time, so her clothes are just rages, she not any money to get some nice clothes. He has left her in the country, but she has not given up hope that he will return, so she doesn't worry about her clothes.

The only other cloths we see her in, in the play are the ones she wears when she is in a club working for the engineer again, and she is just wearing a bikini because she needs some money to get to America. We don't see her in those cloths for very long, but when we do, we don't pick her out from the crowd like we could do before; she is the same as the other girls.

John (American Sergeant) he only wore two different outfits in this play. One of those was at the beginning when he was in the army. He wore a typical army outfit, green shirt and trousers, black boots. This showed that he was different from the people living in Saigon, but that he could order them about, as he was in charge of what was going on.

The only other outfit he wore was in the second half of the play, when we wore the typical cloths of Americans at that time. He looked like he was back in America (which he was) and he was in his normal clothes as he had left the army.

The Engineer he also only wore two different outfits. The one he wore first was one that showed he had done well, and that he had a bit of money. He was in charge of a bar selling girls, and he got all the money, so he wore bright coloured suits. I personally thought that he looked tacky, but then again, I think that was the idea.

The other outfit he wore, was one that was like Kim's. Rags. Again it was the same time as Kim because it showed that the Americans had lost the war, so they were not in charge, and the people of Saigon were made to wear rags to show that they were poor peasants. When he is wearing these clothes, he has lost everything, his work, his girls, his money.

But, things do get better for him, because later on, when he has fled Saigon with Kim, he has got himself another bar with more girls, so he is back in his tacky little shiny suit to attract more men to his bar.

Special Effects

The special effects in this production are amazing. All sorts of things happened that you never thought were possible to do on a stage. A car is driven onto the stage, and helicopter is landed onto it and many, many more.

I am going to start with my favourite one, the helicopter. I knew that this was going to happen so I was prepared for it, but I never knew that it was going to be done the way that it was. There was mayhem on the stage, so this built tension in the audience, and we could hear the helicopter coming down from the top of the stage.

Obviously, it was not a really helicopter, well, half of it was. The part of the helicopter that we saw was a real front half of one. It was lowered down onto the stage by cables attached to the roof, and for safety reasons, they could not have real propellers so they used tennis balls on the end of rope. No one noticed the difference that they were not real, because they went round so fast, and the audience could feel the wind as if they were standing next to a real helicopter. This has to be one of the most fantastic stunts that I have ever seen a theatre do, and I will never forget it.

Another very good stunt that was in the play, was one were a car was driven onto the stage from the back curtain. This was when the engineer was singing about the American dream, and he wanted a big car to drive him round, so, a big car came out for him. He didn't drive around in the car, but it was still very effective because dancers came out and started to dance around, and this took our eyes off the car for a little bit, so it wasn't a main attraction. This was a good idea because as the car could not drive around on the stage, then it would of got a little boring, but there was more entertainment, so we were never bored.

At the end of the song, the car drove out again and it made us believe that it was like a dream to, in our heads as it was in the engineers. One moment the car was the, and the next, It was like it was out of reach, like a dream you cant get into, as much as you want to, just like the engineer wanted to.

Some of the other effects are strobe lighting, smoke machines, sounds effects, and there are a lot of those in this production. They are all used in there own little unique way, which makes this production one that has got to be the best that I have ever seen in the use of special effects.

My favourite part that special effects were used, was when Kim her son and the engineer are walking off into the sunset to start there new life in America, and there is soft music and smoke from a smoke machine all around them, and I don't know why, but that stuck in my head as being a very emotional moment in the play.

Lighting

The lighting in Miss Saigon is very different to the lighting in other theatre productions. In this there is lots of strobe lighting as there is a lot of action going on, such as when the helicopter leaves to go back to America, it is a very tense scene, and the strobe lighting makes our hearts race, as we want to know what is going to happen.

But in other places the lighting is softer, and more romantic, like when Kim and John are in there room together, is shows the romance that they are feeling so, the lighting is softer and darker. This made the audience feel like they are actually feeling the emotions that Kim and john are going through at that moment.

But, there is a contrast to that. When the club scenes are on stage, there is a lot of lighting and glitter to show that these are times of fun, and people are enjoying themselves. Thee lights are not those from light bulbs though, they are from signs that say things like, "XXX" and "girls girls girls" "Moulin Rouge" and so on. So it is made to look like they are signs from outside a street getting people to come into the clubs, like the audience did.

Conclusion

I think that this play is one of the best that I have ever seen. It has excitement, wonder, romance and action. The lighting, sound effect and other effects make this a unique production that would make it seem almost timeless. This is a play that I would recommend to anyone and it is one that I would never forget and I am sure that no one else ever would either.

To build an effective strategy, business leaders must involve may parts of the business. This helps to ensure that the e-business solution is tightly integrated into the business and business strategy. Some things that should be considered when building the strategy

What are the core business objectives of the e-business initiative (including an examination of what competitors are doing and what lies ahead in the market place)?

Buy cheap internet technology term paper

Which of the companys products and services will be involved in the e-business initiatives?

Which processes can be improved by applying internet technology?

What customers does the company wants to attract and serve?

What do customers and partners expect and demand in terms of customer care and service?

What level of financial and personnel support can the business commit?

What new issues will the company face once their e-business site is running (security, privacy, regulatory, etc)?

According to the Gartner Group, Enterprises that have implemented e-commerce as part of a business strategy have been more successful in reducing business cycle times, improving cash flows, reducing inventories, decreasing administrative costs, and opening new markets and distribution channels.

Developing an effective e-business strategy isnt always good enough by itself. In order to be truly effective, the company must have the right characteristics to successfully implement the strategy. Some of the characteristics of companies that have developed and implemented successful e-business strategies are

They are willing to change,

They have adaptive strategies,

They understand and focus on partnerships, and

They look at the market differently.

Define the vision

Probably the most important step in defining an e-business strategy is defining the vision and goals for the business. To do this, the company must think about why they want to be on-line. Are they going on-line because being on the internet is the latest and greatest place to do business, or because some expert has told them to go online? Many business who have done poorly on the internet have done so because they ignored the question of why.

Before beginning to layout their vision, companies should spend some time doing research. Their research should focus on two areas understanding what the internet provides and what are competitors doing. An understanding of what the internet technology can provide is important foundation of the e-business strategy. An understanding of what competitors are doing in their e-business systems will help the company formulate their strategy with an eye towards what customers expect from the current market.

The next question that needs to be addressed is what opportunities are available? As we have seen, there are a large number of opportunities available on the internet. Three of these opportunities include

1. Selling products directly (most people think of this first…) In this case, the company has to decide if their products and services are appropriate for the net. Some products, like automobiles and homes, require high levels of customer service and personal attentions, and may not be appropriate for internet sales. Other products, however, like books, music, and consumer electronics, may be much more suited for the internet.

. Providing information, or brochureware. In this case, no immediate revenue may be recognized, but it can educate customers and direct them to offline outlets, or help build an off-line (or on-line) brand

. Improving business processes. In this case, the company can utilize the internet to enhance the supply chain with an eye towards streamlining processes and cutting costs.

If the major goal of the strategy is to target customers, then the business must decide whether they are going to focus the system on new customers, existing customers, or both. Each type of customer has its own set of considerations that affect the strategy

New customers - how are you going to get them to the site, and once they are there, how are you going to keep them, and get them to return? If this is the focus, then lots of marketing collateral available on the site.

Existing customers - focus on functionality, like reporting and inventory management. There isnt much of a need to spend time talking about the value of a product if they are already a customer. Instead, talk about how to help them manage the use of the product or their inventories.

Both - content for new customers and private access to special functions for customers and partners.

Initially, the vision should focus on high-return, high-profile alternatives. Since the internet is a revolutionary technology, the team that is developing the vision and goals should be encouraged to think out-of-the box when reviewing alternatives.

Finally, once the vision has been developed, it must be documented and used to guide the development of the e-business strategy.
