Over the history of mankind there have been relatively few who have truly enjoyed religious freedom. Though we see definite signs of increased limitations being put on traditional religious organizations today, we here in America enjoy freedom far beyond that enjoyed by the generations before us and most of our contemporaries around the world. We take our freedoms for granted just as we take fresh air until we are deprived of it. It seems to be a fact of human nature that it is only in its absence that a particular freedom is most valued.

Let us briefly review a little history of religious freedom in Europe prior to the settling of America.

The first major breakthrough came about 1450 with Johann Gutenberg's invention of removable type and the printing press. Not until Gutenberg's invention was the mass production of the printed word possible. Books prior to that time were copied by hand, and a large library of even a wealthy family might be ten books or less. It is estimated that within 50 years of Gutenberg's invention 0,000,000 books were printed.

Do my essay on Religious freedom CHEAP !

But with the printing press came the opportunity for rapid spreading of information, especially copies of the scriptures, which up until that time, were the exclusive possession of the Church and were kept under strict control. It was understood that a monopoly on the scriptures gave those in power the ability to manage the news to the people and thereby control their thinking. The closely aligned political and ecclesiastical powers of the day combined and were soon doing what they could to make it illegal to own a Bible.

The Gutenberg Bible was initially printed in Latin for the Catholic Church. Various scholars began making new translations and even dared to translate scripture into the native tongue of the people. For two hundred years, governments imprisoned and even executed those who translated, printed, or possessed illegal scriptures.

To English speaking people, the most notable was William Tyndale. He was the first to translate portions of the Bible into English while in exile, and his last wish before being executed by strangulation in 156 was that the king's eyes would be opened that the people might have the Bible. Within just a few years the political climate in England began to change, and Miles Coverdale printed the first complete English Bible using much of Tyndale's work. It had to be printed overseas and shipped to England. Six thousand copies were smuggled into the country. Those who owned them were at risk of severe punishments, but the word was spreading. And it became politically opportune to authorize an official Bible under the authority of the king. After delays and aborted attempts, the King James Bible was published in 1611 and was the first printed-in-England Bible free to circulate among the people. It was not immediately popular, as the Geneva Bible had already been spread widely among the people.

When the American colonies became populated, the king forbade them from printing their own copies of an English translation. They had to be imported from England.

The first American Bible to be printed in the English language was printed in 1776, only after the American colonies had declared their independence.

This is only part of the story of the quest for religious freedom. As you know, the Pilgrims and other groups came to this country seeking the freedom to practice their faith which did not fully adhere to the established churches of the day. These people, often out of a sense of desperation to preserve the purity of their faith and the integrity of their community, immediately practiced intolerance of other faiths. The concept of religious freedom was not yet mature, but over the follow century and a half, recognition of the value of religious liberty increased. And colony by colony, more liberal views were enacted into law.

Just days before our declaring independence from England, Virginia adopted a bill of rights which included these words

...All Men are equally entitled to the free exercise of Religion, according to the Dictates of Conscience; and that it is the mutual Duty of all to practice Christian Forbearance, Love, and Charity towards each other.

I do not have time today to discuss this in detail, but it is clear that the early settlers and the Founders viewed this nation as being founded for a Christian purpose but were also coming to the realization that for that purpose to prosper full religious freedom was necessary. Even so, as we became a nation in 1776, there still remained established churches in various colonies and in some places there were laws restricting public offices to only those who professed a faith in Jesus Christ.

In the end of Maria or the Wrongs of Woman, Maria is allowed to submit a statement of her behalf to the court. In this statement she attempts to justify her behavior by showing the unjust treatment she received by her husband. Maria also attempts to make a convincing social critique on the institute of marriage at the time. She feels that the laws and customs of marriage serve to enslave women. She as a woman had to overlook the faults and infidelities of her husband, and she tries to prove that he was indeed unfaithful to her. Maria finds that the witnesses refuse to come forward to corroborate he claims. In her statement she charges that marriage puts an undue burden on the weaker shoulders of women by placing them in a totally dependant position. She believes that there are certain extreme situations that should legally allow a woman to divorce her husband. She then goes into detail about her husband's attempts to use her to borrow money from her wealthy uncle and how he eventually tries to sell her to one of his friends.

In her arguments to the court she speaks of the virtues of women which consist of submission, chastity, and forgiveness. She is particularly angered by this set of traits that society considers essential to every virtuous woman. She states that she has pardoned her husband for what he did to her but she resents the fact that in the eyes of the law and society as well, she is still expected to love him and be faithful to him, even after he had deprived her of love and affection.

The arguments that she makes to the court are quite convincing. Although there are some flaws in her statements, for the most part her arguments are convincing because they are well thought out and passionate. She believes strongly in what she is saying because in her eyes she is a living example of the oppression that women endure at the hands of their husbands. Maria is also very well spoken and this is evident in her writing which happens to be quite eloquent. The most plausible argument in her statements is the idea that women are reduced to nd class citizens. "I yet submitted to the rigid laws which enslave women, obeyed the man whom I could no longer love. Whether the duties of the state are reciprocal I mean not to discuss" (pg 10). This quote outlines the sentiment that expressed throughout Maria's statement. By looking at the description of her life with her husband, this description of marriage is valid in the life of Maria and many of the other women of the time.

There are some flaws in the arguments that Maria outlines in her statement to the court. She is very emotional and passionate in her writings as I have already stated but she lacks evidence that will vouch for her in court. Emotional arguments do not stand up very well in court without evidence to support it. She stated that she was unable to find witnesses that would agree to say that her husband had indeed cheated on her. She also describes how her husband had attempted to sell her to a friend; unfortunately she allows the incriminating note to be burned, leaving Maria without proof of this claim. This is the least plausible aspect of her arguments to the court. She desires the court to sympathize with her situation but she is unable to provide evidence to support the claim that Mr. Venables is the monster she believes him to be.

Help with essay on Reading Response: Maria or the Wrongs of Woman

Maria in her argument successfully outlines the subservient place of women in society. Knowing women's place in the legal system at the time she was in a place where she had to be extremely prepared to defend herself in court. I believe that it was wise for her to appear in court at the time because no one would have been able to tell the story of her life better than her. The fact that she lacked evidence to support her claims was damaging because in the eyes of the judge she did not support her claims with her passionate and highly emotional statement, "If women were allowed to plead their feelings as an excuse or palliation of infidelity, it was opening a flood gate for immorality" (pg 1). No matter how eloquent her statement to the court is, she is unable to escape the fact that she is a woman. The burden of proof is almost doubly hard on her in proving herself innocent. She is unable to exonerate herself in court but the fact that she was able to speak for herself in court does serve as a victory for women. The arguments of her statement echo the sentiments of women at the time who are without a voice.

Schumaker's article "Dead Zone, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your John F. Schumaker's article "Dead Zone paper at affordable prices with cheap essay writing service!

In John F. Schumakers article Dead Zone The Monster of American Consumer Culture, he writes, While most societies throughout history have organized themselves in order to curb natural greed, America's devoted consumers are encouraged to respect, nurture and act on the subtlest stirrings of their avarice. As a result materialism has reached fever pitch and continues to rise sharply. While Schumaker does make a valid point about the rise of materialism in mainstream America today, he fails to look at the historical causes and events that have shaped America into the capitalistic society we now live in. His statement also suggests that he sees America as only a single society and does not differentiate between the drives and goals of individual Americans.

In order to understand why America is in the state that it is today, we must first look back at the time before America was seen as greedy. Throughout the middle to late 1800s and into the early 100s America was seen as the land of opportunity. During this time millions of immigrants came to this country seeking freedom and an opportunity to succeed in the new world. These people peddled their goods or slaved in factories for almost nothing in return, for the sole reason of giving their children a chance to live a better life than they have. At the time this was not referred to as greedy but as bettering the life of your children. This idea has become almost a tradition in the lives of Americans and with each generation comes a higher standard of living.

America has become what it is today due to capitalism and like it or not capitalism promotes growth through competition. This is why we see so many different brands of basically the same product. If only one company produced all of the products that people use, there would be no reason for any advancement or improvement because those who are using the products would have no other alternative but to do without them. Therefore capitalism promotes competition and it is this competition that we see every day in TV shows, movies, commercials and advertisements. The highest bidding company gets to put their product into the many different medias people come into contact with. This results in people seeing their favorite actors, singers, and role models promoting a certain brand or product which leads to the idea that even common folk can be like the famous people they look up to just by buying their product. This leads to the question of whether consumers are buying products out of greed or out of envy.

The greed or envy question comes into play within the last fifty years. Are consumers buying products because they are inherently greedy? If so, what dictates the brand or product type that is bought? The idea that envy plays a major part in Americas consumer culture would explain why some brands of products succeed while other brands of the same product fail miserably. This idea is seen mainly in times of prosperity such as the Reagan era in the 180s. At the time the brand of product you bought pretty much dictated your status and popularity. If you wanted to be accepted or viewed as "cool", you had to where the right clothes. It all comes down to fitting in. If your friends got a new coat and receives complements upon wearing it, more than likely you would like to receive the same attention. On the other hand, if he were to be ridiculed for wearing his new coat you probably would feel no desire for that kind of attention and therefore feel no envy towards your friend.

Cheap Custom Essays on John F. Schumaker's article "Dead Zone

So, are all Americans naturally greedy? If so, is American consumer culture simply a reflection of our national greed? For the majority of Americans the answer would be no. There are exceptions, such as the Enron's and WorldCom's, that affect the view of our society as a whole. The average American is just trying to get by in order to provide a comfortable life for themselves or for their family. Most parents want the best for their children and if this requires wearing certain clothes or buying certain products in order to fit in, so be it. Does this mean American consumerism is a bad thing? In some ways it does because it casts ridicule upon people who don't have the right clothes or products but, overall, consumerism is a good thing. Not only does it promote growth through competition, as discussed before, but it also supplies jobs and opportunities for anyone from any class system or from anywhere. Without that opportunity, America just wouldn't be America.

I don't remember the exact date it was, but about two weeks ago, SPSU held a blood drive in the student center. Seeing how I had never given blood before, I was apprehensive to step into the auditorium to check out the scene…but I did, and 40 minutes later, due to my small veins, I had filled a one pint bag with my blood. As I enjoyed my juice and cookies afterwards, I was proud of the fact that my blood could be used to help save a life! Even more satisfying was the fact that my blood, being O Positive, could help anyone, no matter the race, creed, gender, religion, or any other number of factors that differentiates me from another human being.

However, if I had been living in the world of Gattaca, this blood may have been used for a very different reason. My blood could have been used to determine whether I would have been smart enough to get into college and write this paper in the first place. Set in the near future, GATTACA depicts a society which has placed all of its faith in the sequence of the bases, G, A, T and C, (hence the movies title) found in DNA. Seconds after a baby is pulled from the womb, a cold metal probe latches on to his heel and sucks out a blood sample. The sample is fed into a genetic analyzer that promptly spews out a genetic report card, detailing the childs predisposition for such ailments as manic depression, alcoholism and attention deficit disorder, in addition to his life expectancy and cause of death. Parents who want the best for their child see to it that, shortly after conception, the developing embryo is genetically screened and any undesirable physical characteristics or health problems are obliterated with genetic technology.

Now naturally, all of us would be beyond ecstatic to know that our child will never have to suffer from the nausea of chemotherapy after being diagnosed with a terminal cancer, or even that he/she would not have to be admitted to the Betty Ford Clinic for alcoholism, but in addition to having these futuristic creature comforts, you would be putting your child at risk for a life of discrimination. Citizens of GATTACA have come to believe that the information in an individuals DNA solely determines his identity, social worth and potential. Those with the good, healthy genes get the prestigious, intellectual jobs. Those with the bad, diseased genes are not allowed to pursue careers for which they are deemed genetically unfit. The hero, an aspiring astronaut with sub-par DNA, laments that at GATTACA they have discrimination down to a science.

Let's get back to reality for a bit. Today, we know that scientific research is headed in the direction of genetic modification, but not to the extent of GATTACA. In less than a decade, we may be able to know the purpose of each of our genes and we want to use that information in a positive way to advance in the study of man. There is on-going research, on somatic cells in humans and germ cells in mice, that one day may allow scientists to eradicate inheritable disease to everybody's benefit. Hopefully, in the land non-Gattaca, there will be no need for the terms "valid" and "invalid" as demonstrated in the movie. Surely, research of how to improve our genetic material in the "natural" way set forth in GATTACA aims to improve our health, not to segregate society into genetic winners and losers.

Buy cheap GATTACA term paper

In closing, there are two quotes that struck me as particularly interesting in the movie. The first quote, "Consider God's handiwork; who can straighten what He hath made crooked" comes at the very beginning of the movie. It's really quite interesting because when you bring the notion of religion into scientific conversation, one may argue that God is the One who allowed us to make as much progress as we have in science. He is the one who "gave" us the thought to change man's genetic material in this very manner. It's no wonder that so often, science clashes with religion. People would constantly say, "God gave us the abilities to do these things, so full force ahead!" The second quote was said, by Vincent, in the middle of the movie. "There is no gene for fate." This was a profound quote because amidst everything in the movie that was so streamlined and definite and exact, one cannot predict the outcome of every possible scenario that may or may not occur in life.

While the way we live today is very different than the way the characters of GATTACA live, there is one at least one similarity that is seems to fit appropriately with this Science, Technology, & Society class. Science dictates society and society dictates science. The happy medium between the two is technology. All three are ever-changing, and we cannot live in any world without thinking how Science, Technology, & Society impacts each one of us.

Please note that this sample paper on GATTACA is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on GATTACA, we are here to assist you. Self-Managed Work Teams

Self-managed work teams are groups of employee who are responsible for a complete set of tasks and duties which are related to the production of a final product or an on going process.

Self-managed work teams are the wave of the future, It is estimated that "Self-managed teams have been credited with hundreds of millions of dollars, achieving conceptual breakthroughs and introducing unparalleled number of new products" (Elmuti, 17).These teams are formed through interviews and research of all available employees in order to chose the best possible combination of skills. Yandrick (001), Self-managed work teams can be characterized by features such as multiple skills, common purpose, interdependence, authority and accountability. The better a team is fitted with the right skills and elements the greater the results and benefits received by the department or the company as a whole. Self managed work teams should have a clear and identifiable goal, and success measurement in order to achieve the outcome desired by management and succeed at the goal prescribed. Attaran and Nguyen (1) concluded that self-managed work teams are usually more productive and aggressive in their approach to problem solving. Also, when compared to typical hierarchical management, self-managed teams were found to exhibit more enthusiasm, camaraderie and shared responsibility instead of backbiting and protecting information. In addition, whereby self-managed work teams have flexible tasks, multi-skilled, with interchangeable roles and a cohesive work effort, traditional management rigid tasks and specialized skills, fixed roles and divided work efforts.

According to Attaran and Nguyen (1), team members should have a variety of skills and experiences and are encouraged to develop new ones to increase their knowledge and their value to the team. Teams permit performance and learning at the same time. There is no better way to become a learning organization than to have a team based structure which strives on people learning from each others. Also, self-managed work teams are expected to "lead to improved working conditions, greater opportunities for expression, self-development for participating employees…, to increase productivity, increase market share, improve pricing, and cost reduction" (Elmuti 17). Work teams represent a unique set of individuals with different knowledge, skills and

Self-Managed Work Teams

attributes. It is like a football team where you have many players with different skills that all have to come together to form a viable team that can compete. It is very important that differences be taken into account when dividing up tasks among members. Although each member of a self-managed team has a unique goal and a team goal, each member has to find a way to achieve his or her individual goal while still attaining the team goal (Attaran & Nguyen, 1).

Even though many companies achieved great results using self-managed work teams, there are significant challenges associated with the implementation of self-managed teams. Duhaime and Renn (18), self-managed work teams achieving the highest degrees of success received a great deal of training prior to implementation. Training can be expensive and will divert employees from their daily responsibilities which will add to the total costs. Self-managed teams are not a quick fix to an organization problems. It is a long costly process and an on-going learning process for all the employees which can create a lot of problems because many employees are not comfortable learning and updating their skills constantly. In addition, management could be threatened by their loss of power to work teams and could resist change. And, not all workers are comfortable working in groups and under scrutiny of peers and it is hard sometimes to limit free-riders because of the variety of skills and the self managed nature of the teams.

Self-managed work teams are the wave of the future and a must for any company or organization aiming to succeed in the business world. Self-managed teams, although are costly to implement and takes a long time before the company reaps its rewards, are without a doubt a highly productive management tools.

Homosexuality in our society today has become more openly widespread than ever, yet many still view it as something new and strange. Shakespeare wrote of cross-dressing in the Twelfth Night and the famous poet Walt Whitman was a homosexual. So, why does society put an emphasis on homosexuality as being "dirty" or "evil"? Two men or two women should be allowed to join in matrimony and adopt children in more than two states.

Racism and prejudice are synonymous words yet, one would think that to be racist is worse than being prejudice. If one admits that one is a racist society condemns he or she; however, a fear or dislike of homosexuals seems to break a common ground for most heterosexuals in our society. That fear or dislike of a person could be aptly defined as a type of prejudice. Bruce Bawer explains, "In a world of prejudice, there is no other prejudice quite like it. Mainstream writers, politicians and cultural leaders who hate Jews or blacks or Asians but who have long since accepted the unwritten rules that forbid public expression of those prejudices still denounce gays with impunity" (61).

There are many reasons people have as to why same sex couples should not wed. For some it is a deep personal and private reason and for others it is the fear of being exposed to something that is different. Two of the more prominent and maybe more discussed reasons are Aids and child abuse. Lets take each of these reasons and briefly discuss how they affect a persons emotions, alters his or her judgment, and how not to let these reasons weigh so heavily on a person's feelings and perceptions of others.

Child abuse is a very common problem. Many children are abused in some form whether it is physical, verbal, or emotional neglect chances are you may have been or known of a child that has been abused. Sexual assault of children (mainly boys) is a concern for many when considering the problems of same sex families. In a study done of a 175 incarcerated Massachusetts men who were imprisoned for the sexual assault of children, none of the prisoners had relations exclusively with men. Forty percent were involved in heterosexual relationships. It could be concluded from this information that pedophiles are in a class to themselves; they are not limited to homosexual men. Pedophiles are more likely men who are not comfortable with their sexuality. Men who are comfortable enough with their sexuality to marry other men are more likely men who identify well with who they are sexually and therefore not as probable to abuse the children they care for (Graff 16). Victims and abusers come in many races and social classes; they are not limited to homosexual men.

Custom writing service can write essays on ACCEPTANCE

The number of people in our population who have tested positive for HIV and Aids is sadly climbing. In the early and mid 0's homosexual men accounted for at least 45% of people who tested positive for HIV, so it is not unlikely that people should think that children in the care of homosexual men might contract the virus. Aids cases among heterosexual men are increasingly rising over the numbers of cases of homosexual and bisexual men (Hopkins and Johnston 18). There are many children who are still in the care of their HIV positive heterosexual parents. Many children are also abused by their heterosexual parents and there are also spouses in heterosexual marriages that are being abused by their significant other whose children are forced to watch.

You can point, stare, criticize, analyze and even make it illegal, but ultimately two people who love each other will be together and there is nothing you can do. Aids and child abuse are both horrible things that heterosexual are exposed to and commit yet no one does anything about it. Some heterosexuals have Aids and some commit child abuse but people don't scrutinize heterosexual relationships as they do homosexual relationships. They do this probably because a homosexual relationship isn't the norm but what is normal? Two people who love each other and want to raise a child together are not normal. That is the conclusion to make from all the anti-homosexual opinions. Sexual orientation should not matter when children who need loving and caring families are considered and it definitely not be considered when two consenting adult want to make a formal commitment to one another.

Philosophy of Being

Why do I exist…What is my purpose?

What is the raison detre?" Taking note that you are the only one looking out from behind your eyes and that you are the only one perceiving the world through your point of view, then how could anything exist without you? But you know, or at least you think you know, that life will go on without you and that your life may have no consequence to this planet. No one would ever want to believe that their life had no meaning. With these never-ending, circular riddles that play out in one's mind, the hunt for the reason for existence, soon becomes the very reason to exist. There is no doubt that this question has plagued mankind since its commencement. The answer to this puzzling question entails deep philosophical and ontological implications. The purpose of human life is an ideal that transcends the mundane goals of human existence. Could it be possible that there might be more than one purpose of our existence? And do we possess the freedom to change these purposes? It is certain that man's purpose in life is not determined by fatalism or determinism, both which totally negate freedom. Each individual must follow their own path, and fill his own being with experiences unique to only him. Therefore, our purpose as human beings is affected by the choices and acts of volition that we make throughout our life. All of these choices eventually contribute to create our own genuine uniqueness.

By our very nature as human beings, we seek truth, which is contingent upon one's knowledge. As one begins to attain a greater knowledge of himself, the being called I, one attains more freedom. Thus, freedom implies knowledge, for as the more knowledge acquired in the discovery of the being called I, the more freedom one possesses. As humans, we seek to constantly change, because by our very nature we are not complete. This change implies that we have freedom with which we seek our own totality. Change, by its very nature, then implies hope.

Cheap Custom Essays on why do we exist?

As humans, we are not satisfied with what we are experiencing so we constantly want to change. Consequently, this hope implies faith, and this metaphysical concept integrates the idea that man, by his very nature, hopes to better himself. We, as human beings, seek to better ourselves by trying to gain the acceptance of other people in an effort to complete ourselves. The only problem is that man will never find the acceptance of enough people to complete himself.

Man by his very nature is incomplete; therefore, man must go outside of himself to complete himself. Consequently, man innately wanting other people to accept him involves the concept of love. Man uses love to establish relationships with others in an effort to try to complete himself. Love is the sharing one's self with another person, and it exists only to allow man to find the totality within himself. Since man cannot satisfy the entirety of himself within himself, he searches for relationships in an attempt to share a piece of his being with another. Yet, man's search is unending; therefore, making love limitless and making one's struggle to complete himself interminable.

As stated before, man's purpose in life is merely to strive to complete himself, the being called "I." Consequently, man struggles in life to experience humanity, transforming energies that are less than love into love, for love is central to all human existence. In doing so, one raises the vibration of human experience through one's consciousness and love.

This metaphysical concept of love leads to an understanding of oneself, which can and will eventually lead to an apparent comprehension of those around oneself. Humans are composed of three parts the physical, psychological, and the psychic. It is only through love that one can satisfy and complete these three parts. In order to complete oneself, one needs love; therefore, one cannot find all of himself in himself, because then he would not need truth, change, hope faith, and love, which are essential to the essence of the being called "I."

Since one will never completely discover himself, one will never be able to grasp his apparent purpose in life. Despite his struggles attempting to find comfort in relationships with other people through love, one will never be able to fulfill his purpose of existence. One's purpose in life is impossible to grasp, but it can be partially experienced in one's search for self-completion. One exists to complete those around him in the same way that they do for him. It is in this interdependent coexistence of human beings where love and harmony arise to become an essential part of living. In conclusion, the eternal search for oneself not only contributes to fulfill the purpose of one's existence, but also to the fulfillment of humanity's purpose.

The use of Dramatic Irony in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night

In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, he makes extensive use of Dramatic Irony to induce laughter from the audience. According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary, Dramatic, or Tragic, Irony is when a characters words convey a certain meaning to the audience, of which the character is unaware.

For example, in Scene two, lines sixty two and sixty three, the captain tells Viola that he will help her to deceive the Duke into believing that she is an Eunuch, and says that if he tells anyone, he may go blind. There is the Dramatic Irony of her disguise, as she fools everyone in Illyria into believing that she is a man. In Scene three, from about line five to line seven, Maria tells sir Toby that Olivia takes great exception to his being out so late, which basically means that she doesn't like it. However. Sir Toby puns on the word "Excepted", saying that she should leave him alone, and that she has taken enough exception to his actions. Then Maria says that he must confine himself to some limits, but then sir Toby puns on the words "confine" and "fine", stating that he is well dressed, but the audience really knows that he is unwilling to discipline his appetite for physical pleasures.

In line thirty six of Scene three, when Sir Andrew enters, sir Toby exclaims "Sweet Sir Andrew!" as if he likes him as a friend, but the audience really knows that sir Toby is only after Sir Andrew's money, because we know he earns three thousand ducats a year. Now in Scene four, from line five to line fifteen, Viola enters as Cesario, her alias, because she has taken the disguise of an Eunuch, and neither Valentine nor the Duke know she is a woman in reality. The Duke, even though he has known Cesario for only three days, has taken him into his confidence, and has told him all of his secrets. But, Viola actually wants to marry him, and now he sends her to go speak with Olivia, and to try and convince her to marry him. In line twenty five of Scene four to about line forty, even though he does not know she is a woman, the Duke states that Cesario is yet so young that his lips are redder than Diana's, the Roman goddess of Chastity, and that his voice and figure both resemble a woman, but he doesn't know that he actually is a woman. The Duke thinks that Olivia would rather listen to a youthful messenger, like Cesario, than an older one like Valentine.

In Scene five, from line fifty to line sixty, Olivia scolds Feste for being away for a few days and refusing to tell her where he has been. She says that he must be taken away, but he asks her to give him a chance to prove that she is a fool instead, and she agrees. He then states that she still mourns for her brother, even though she thinks he is in Heaven, and that she is a fool for doing so. But we really know that she only went into this mourning period to avoid marrying the Duke, because if she had not done it, he could have forced her to marry him. After this, in line seventy, Olivia is impressed by Feste's alertness, and asks Malvolio what he thinks. Malvolio then replies scaldingly, insulting Feste, and she is surprised by his reaction. But we know that Malvolio is very egocentric and hates Feste, and that Feste hates him as well. Then, in line one hundred and twenty five, Viola (disguised as Cesario) enters and speaks with Olivia, but Olivia doesn't know that Cesario is a woman. In line one hundred and forty two, Viola actually says that she is not all that she seems.

In line two hundred and twenty five of Scene four, Olivia says to Cesario that the Duke must not send any more messengers, but that Cesario is welcome at any time. Olivia has actually fallen in love with Cesario, but she still doesn't know that he is a woman. Then, in line two hundred and forty five, after Viola leaves, Olivia tells Malvolio to run after him and to give his ring back which she says he forgot there. But what Malvolio doesn't know, is that the ring belongs to Olivia, and that she only sends it to Cesario so he can bring it back the next day so that she can see him again.

So as you can see, Shakespeare used Dramatic Irony in this play to transform what otherwise would have been a drama into a comedy play. He used this very effectively, and there is no doubt in my mind that he was indeed one of the greatest writers of our time.

Many distinct cultures may evolve from a single nationality. Values and priorities of a culture are often what separate it from another. In America beginning around 1607, the English began settling two main regions; however by 1700 two diverse societies had emerged. In the unruly Chesapeake region, English principals revolved around tobacco and revenue for the Motherland, while the English of New England in the North developed Puritan principals of strict religion and unity. The development of these societies arose for the need to survive and live the way each believed was for the best.

The first English came to America in search of a possible route to the Indies, and of course the vast gold and riches, which the New World was said to have an abundance of. The first permanent English settlement in 1607 was Jamestown on the banks of the James River in the Chesapeake Bay. This was an effort of a joint-stock company, known as the Virginia Company, established in England, to milk the lands for all of its profits, a proposal that was to endure only a few years. However the group of all male settlers, greedy and hungry for riches became unruly and could not cooperate until the Captain John Smith created order, which was much needed. Disease, malnutrition and starvation were paramount on the shores of Virginia, killing droves of settlers. Those who survived would reap the profits of the tobacco boom.

Tobacco was a crop which flourished in the Chesapeake area. The need for cheap labor arose, considering the indentured servants could easily escape, had limited numbers and other disadvantages, African slaves were brought in and would become a staple in southern society. Only wealthy plantation owners could afford such luxury as black slaves, and usually had large influences in local government, leaving the little guy out. Less fortunate settlers were under the jurisdiction of English appointed governors and often mistreated and ignored. Profit was above equal opportunity and fairness. The English of the South created a society which was based heavily on plantations; not much unity, much competition and where practice of slavery was accepted.

The English of the New England area were a different type of people. These were English Puritans which wanted to separate from the Church of England and bask in religious freedom far from the Motherland. The first groups to arrive were Separatists, or extreme Puritans at Plymouth Bay in 160, who were appalled by the Roman Catholic Church of England under James I. Loathing of the Puritans continued in England, and in 16 Charles I authorized Puritan persecutions, prompting the largest migration of the Puritans between 16 and 164, to the rocky New England region, where many could start over in a land with others who had the same values and honorable ideas.

The Puritans of New England were deeply religious and believed the Bible was law. As God fearing individuals, they feared hell and lived God's word. Unity in the community was key. Family values and togetherness was also vital. They believed they must become close knit and work as one, rich or poor. Take on all the good and bad with a great sense of togetherness. A belief system that could be considered a similar to communism, with all receiving equal share of everything from land plots to wages. Employment in New England was not made of crops needing servants or slaves, but of small farms, industry and commerce. This made the people self reliant and resourceful. The New England society was based on strong morals based on solid religious beliefs, equality, brotherhood and a hint of rebellion.

Cultures or societies develop to cater to the needs of a people. Ethics, ideals and principals established in a nation may differentiate from the beliefs of some of its citizens, creating a need for a new culture or cultures. English settlers in America formed two distinctive societies in less then a century, though they came from the same land. The Chesapeake way of life was based on isolated crops and profits, as the Puritans of New England donned a society which was about brotherhood and religion that proved productive. The development of these two particular societies in the seventeenth century would alter the course of history in ways never imagined.

Chemosensitivity and Cancer Susceptibility

Cancer is defined as a malignant growth that tends to spread indefinitely and to reproduce itself. According to the American Cancer Society, 50 percent of American men and percent of American women get cancer in their lifetime. Though cancer differs in onset, growth rate, level of fatality, and cause, all cancers arise from cells that lost their normal growth controls. Normal cell growth is controlled by a variety of different growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). Cancer cells grow independent of normal growth signals.

Most cancer treatments aim to destroy the cancer cells using radiation (radiation therapy) or toxic chemicals (chemotherapy). Chemotherapy drugs interfere with the ability of a cancer to divide and reproduce its self. The name Chemotherapy literally means chemical therapy. Often if doctors can discover a tumor before metastasis occurs, doctors can try and remove the growth with out using cytotoxic drugs; immunosuppressive, immunomodulating chemicals.

There are many negative effects of radiation and chemotherapy. These treatments cause general weakness, weight loss, and hair loss. The administration of these drugs at high dose affects patients¡¦ red, white, and platelet cell levels in the body, the cells required to fight infection and to heal wounds. Therefore, a patient may not be able to recuperate from the treatment. To help patients survive high dose treatments, they might receive a bone marrow transplants from appropriate donors. A syringe withdraws a small amount of bone marrow from a donor¡¦s pelvic bone, and this gets injected into a patient whose ability to make new blood cells has been impaired by the cancer treatment. Many of these cancer therapies are themselves carcinogenic, a material or substance that produces or stimulates cancer. Yet, the drugs get used because of their ability to also control cancer. The probability of attacking a malignancy in ones body using these treatments proves much higher than the likely hood of developing a new cancer after effective treatment.

Some individuals who receive radiation therapy or chemotherapy and kill the malignant cells, some years latter develop a second cancer. The cause for this particular reoccurrence of malignancy is not known. This unknown fact, leads to a simple question is there anything

unusual about the population of individuals who develop the second malignancy? Is their development of cancer random or are people susceptible to cancer induction?

A wide variation exists of cancer rates exist in individuals. In other words, individuals have varying chances of developing cancer. Because of an underlying alteration in their genome, some individuals find they are more inclined to get cancer. An alteration could be a mutation in a specific cancer gene, or it may be an alteration that affects the cells ability to repair damage to its DNA. All cancer cells hold mutations in genes that define a cells growth control factors.

Exposure to agents like radiation or chemicals that cause mutations can increase the probability of cancer. Individuals who are more sensitive to radiation or chemicals may be more likely to get cancer after exposure. In my project, I will test the hypothesis, that people who develop cancer following chemotherapy have sensitivity to the cancer-causing effects of the treatment. I will look at the chemosensitivity of cells from patients who developed cancer after chemotherapy, and compare that sensitivity to patients who were treated with the same drugs but did not get cancer. If one finds that the cells from patients who developed cancer are more sensitive to chemotherapy, then the hypothesis is correct. I will study 15 lines from patients who developed a second malignancy after treatment with cytoxan prior to bone marrow transplantation, and an equal number from patients who received the same treatment but did not develop cancer. These cell lines are immortal B cells derived from the blood of patients before any treatment.

I look at the effect of cytoxan on these cells. Cytoxan is used to decrease a patients¡¦ natural immunity before receiving a bone marrow transplant. Cytoxan causes a decrease in the number of all types of blood cells in a patients bone marrow. Bone marrow depression appears usually -14 days after individuals get treated with cytoxan.

Cytoxan

Cytoxan, which is a brand name for cyclophosphamide, causes a decrease in the number of all types of blood cells in a patients bone marrow.

In the lab, I will use two assays to measure sensitivity. The first will look at cell growth inhibition following treatment. Cells that are more sensitive to cytoxan should grow slower after treatment than cells that are resistant to cytoxan. The other assay, a chromosome assay, consists of looking for exchanges between sister chromatids (SCE) on the same chromosome following treatment with cytoxan.

Street Racing

It's 100 am on a Saturday morning. You lay in your bed just about to fall asleep when suddenly you hear a mighty roar. The air is now filled with the sound of hyped up, turbo charged horsepower coming from under the hoods of dozens of street cars. They quickly block off the streets creating an illegal drag strip a quarter mile long. The drivers of these customized rides get out and admire each others work before getting down to the business at hand- who has the fastest ride of them all. This sport is known as street racing. Now before you go jump in your car to join the millions involved in this sport there are some aspects you should look into. In order to race you have to know where the best places are to race. You should look into the dangers/legalities of street racing. The most important is your car. After you have looked into these aspects you are ready to join the street racer's world!

It's pretty obvious that in order for you to race you have to know where to race. There are many spots right here in Citrus County that harbor street racing, such as the Barge Canal in Yankeetown. If you get caught you get a ticket and your car gets impounded for thirty days, and everyday that it is impounded you have to pay fifteen dollars. The legal way to street race is to go to a track. The problem is there aren't very many tracks around. Every state has their hot spots. Some of the popular spots here in Florida are Orlando, the Bay area, Ft. Lauderdale, and Daytona Beach and other places. In California, some places are Kearny Villa, Trade, Firehouse, Old Sorrento, and Final Words. The names of these spots are nicknames for places in towns. (The spot, sdstreetracing.com)

So now, you know where to race, but have you thought about the dangers/legalities of street racing? When you street race illegally you are putting not only yourself in danger, but also the lives of many others especially when you race on public highways without blocking it off first. If you aren't on a legal track then, yes, it is illegal. (Tracks, Super Street June 000) There has been many of people sentenced to jail time because of street racing. In July of 001, 1-year old Arturo Ortiz was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for hitting another vehicle and killing the driver and his daughter and injuring two other young passengers, while he was drag racing down a Santa Ana, California, highway. In San Diego alone there as been 14 deaths and 4 serious injuries that were attributed to by illegal street racing. Race Legal programs are being started up all over the country to try and stop all deaths from street racing. The people that do street race on public roadways know it illegal but continue to do it. One reason is that it is an adrenaline rush to be out on the streets because you are at the risk of getting caught. Police are cracking down hard on street racers. The one thing that police don't understand is that these people are going to race. Law enforcement can do everything possible to write tickets and put them in jail, but they are still going to race. It's an addiction and it's never going to stop. (Cops give street racer's a hand, ABCNEWS.com)

What is your favorite car? BMW, Jaguar, Porsche, VW, Benz, Audi, Lexus Mitsubishi…. The most loved car out the tracks is Honda. The Acura is very popular too. They have great track time. The best of all time is the Aston Martin. It is the rarity of import cars. (Car, RacingLines.com) Loaded with Nitrous Oxide engine boosters, modified intake valves, supersized engines, and a host of other custom improvements, the best cars can top 100 mph even on the short one-eighth mile track. Also make sure your car looks good because looks are very important. You don't want to be out on the track with an old rusted and dented car. Some cars have a $000 custom paint job done to them. (Cops give street racer's a hand, ABCNEWS.com) The cars that you will most likely see in the tracks are Honda, Acura, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Toyota. Maybe if you are lucky you may see an occasional Mazda RX-7. ( The Car, sdstreetracing.com) It seems to be a battle of who has the phattest ride. Everybody wants to have a tricked out ride. Jermine Dupri told the U.S. on an MTV show, "You aren't anything without a Bentley." Ja Rule tries to outdo them all with his rides. Jermine Dupri drives a $00,000 Bentley, but it's a hard fact that most people can't afford such a luxury. Remember, having a nice car is the most important aspect in street racing, because without the car, well you aren't going to be going anywhere any time soon!

Street racing… There are many aspects to consider before you go hopping into a huge and popular sport. Like, where to race, the dangers/legalities of it, and most important, the car you are racing. Do you think you can hang in a racer's world? Well, like wise man once said, "If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the back porch."

As parents seek too find the best education for their kids, home schooling is becoming very popular. In 184 the U.S. Department of Education estimated that approximately fifteen thousand students were home schooled. This number is increasing between two hundred thousand and three hundred thousand students in 188. As of today, the United States has between 1. million and 1.7 million students being homed schooled in grades K-1. In the past, if you were home schooled it was because of religious beliefs; however, now it is used for religious values, beliefs, and political viewpoints.

Families choose home schooling due to numerous reasons. Van Galen places home schoolers into two district categories ideologues and pedagogues. The ideologues state that they home school their children because they object to what public and private schools are teaching and they want to strengthen their relationship with their children. The ideologue parents have certain beliefs and values that are religiously based. They also have a concern that public and private schools don't provide appropriate moral or ethical instruction.

Pedagogues are home schooled because their parents want their children education to benefit their child's learning style. They feel like schools sort, select and label children, based on what they see and not based on the child's ability.

The following are strengths of home schooling. Research indicates that when there is high parental involvement in the child's educational studies, the child becomes successful and reaches their full potential. Parents feel that by home schooling their child, they are building a tight bond with their kids.

Critics argue children that are home schooled are not exposed to social life and will not be about to socialize properly later in life. This has been cited as the major drawback of home schooling. However, home schooling parents argue that their kids socialization process have both positive and negative forms of socialization. They feel like their child's involvement in other activities such as sporting events is another place for socialization and therefore, they are not isolated from the real world. There have been several studies done that indicate that home school student's social development is comparable to or more advanced than public school students. In Public schools, students endure many negative learning experiences, whereas home schooling provides the supportive environment of a loving and concerned family.

Home schooling does have limitations. Critics feel that students that are home schooled do not get enough exposure in every day social life. Home schooled parents disagree with this and insist that their child get enough social life through extra curricular activities. The biggest concern with home schooling is making sure that whoever is teaching that child is a qualified adult.

Home schooling is playing a significant role in the American child's education. It has proved to be successful enough to be considered a legitimate form of education. There are still some unanswered questions dealing with home schooling. However, one big plus for supporting home schooling is the direct involvement of the parents in their child's education. This way, the parents are more in tune with their child's needs and can strive to meet them.

I am not opposed to home schooling, but I feel it does have some drawbacks. Children who are home schooled are not around other children their own age on a daily basis. Learning to get along with peers and dealing with peer pressure are things they are missing out on. They do not learn how to deal with these problems which become harder to deal with as they get older. In a social environment you have leaders and followers and these are determined through social interaction. Home schooler's are neither and must try to find their role status later in life. This makes it hard for them to fit in with other children in extra curricular activities.

Home schoolers miss out on the ability to participate in school sports and other school related clubs, such as 4-H, tennis, softball, football, Y-club. This helps children learn how to get along with other children and it also allows them to go and see new places and things.

Home schooling cannot teach children how to work with others. Also, they miss out on time management skills that are taught in a standard classroom setting. Not being able to work with others and lack of time management skills can have employment consequences.

My biggest concern with home schooling is the teacher, which is usually the parent. Does the parent have the skills and background necessary to provide the home schooler with a good education? Can he or she teach proper math skills or provide in-depth coverage of necessary courses?

Anne Bradstreet was a woman in a man's world. She was ahead of her times with her knowledge, understanding, ideas, and writing abilities. She was the author of many works and only few made it to print during her lifetime. The only reason that these works were printed was because her brother-in-law, against her will, took her works to England and had them printed. In no work of hers is her struggle to have herself and other women recognized then in "The Prologue."

In the first stanza Bradstreet expresses her feeling that her work is simple. She states that she wants to leave the recording of history up to others who she believes have more skill. "Let poets and historians set these forth, /My obscure lines shall not so dim their worth." (Pg 47) In this quote Bradstreet is expressing her desire not to have her writings trivialize the events of the past. She would much rather have these events honored in the way she believes fit than she herself write about them.

In the second stanza, Bradstreet refers to Guillaume Bartas as a great writer. He is a writer the she enjoys reading, "But when my wond'ring eyes and envious heart/Great Bartas sugared lines do but read o'er." (Pg 47) Bradstreet shares her feeling that Bartas can write about anything in any style he chooses because of his talent. She also allows us to see her view of herself by sharing that she feels she has a simpler writing style because of her limited skills as a writer.

The third stanza is another look into Bradstreet's view of her own writing. "My foolish, broken, blemished Muse so sings, /And this to mend no art is able, /'Cause nature made it so irreparable." (Pg 47) In this quote Bradstreet is expressing her feelings that not much should be expected of her writings because her skills have so many flaws. She is saying that these flaws in her writing skills are reflected very clearly in her works and just like we don't expect beautiful music from a broken instrument the same view should be taken when reading her writings.

The fourth stanza is where Bradstreet shares her feelings that her work will never be perfect. "Art can do much, but this maxim's most sure/A weak or wounded brain admits no cure." (Pg 48) Bradstreet uses this quote to explain to us that the problems with her writing skills run very deep. They are not something you can fix easily, if even at all.

Bradstreet displays her anger for those people that do not respect her work in the fifth stanza. She is angry towards those who feel that she can't write well because she is a woman. "Who says my hand a needle better fits, /A poet's pen all scorn I should thus wrong." (Pg 48) Bradstreet is determined to prove wrong those who believe that her gender has anything to do with her abilities as a writer. She is also out to correct those who feel her good writings are stolen from men or just a stroke of luck.

In the sixth stanza, Bradstreet refers to the Greeks who used women as their muses for the arts. She talks of how they were much more sympathetic to women and their abilities in the arts. She talks of one of the nine female muses but eventually refers to the times when the Greeks no longer looked upon women so kindly. "But this weak knot they will full soon untie. /The Greeks did nought, but play the fools and lie." (Pg 48)

In the seventh stanza Bradstreet reveals her almost contrary belief in her place in society. While she strives to be recognized as a writer, she also shares that she understands her domestic place. On the other hand she asks to just be allowed to be who she is. Even though her place is below men, she still wants recognition and respect for her works. "Let Greeks be Greeks, and women what they are;/Men have precedency and still excel." (Pg 48)

In the eighth and final stanza, she expresses her desires if her works are by chance recognized. "Give me Thyme or parsley wreath, I ask no bays;/This mean and unrefined ore of mine." (Pg 48) Bradstreet is sharing her wanting of something useful to her everyday life if ever she is rewarded for her life. Instead of the traditional crown or laurel used for male poets, she would much rather have spiced she can use in her cooking. This is also another good example of how Bradstreet not only wants to be recognized but also understands her domestic duties or cooking and cleaning.

Overall, Anne Bradstreet's poem is a sharing or her desire to be recognized and respected as a female writer or her time. She was ahead or her time and her dreams and desires were finally recognized well after her death. Her poems are still read and enjoyed by millions or people around the world and her works will not be forgotten.

The development of dance changed with the development of dance costumes. Royal Patronage, fashions and professional dancers played important roles in the development of Dance and Dancewear. Ballet was initially a combination of professional acrobatics and folk dance with an aristocratic grace performed for the leisure of the monarchy.

Men's clothing wasn't very practical, they wore heavily brocaded tunics and coats which were very stiff and breeches limited movement of the knees. Heavy wigs and swords to the waist reduced movement while small heeled shoes disabled the pointe of feet. Woman wore clothing even more unsuitable for dancing, stiff lacy long sleeved bodices and panniered skirts. This shows us that the importance of dancewear should not be overlooked because dancers were less skilled then they are now and so were not bothered by bulky costumes.

During the early 1700s, fashions in ballet costumes began to change. The great dancer Marie Camargo shortened her ballet skirt to above her ankles, and removed the heels from her dancing slippers. Allowing her ankles on show meant full appreciation of intricate footwork and complex jumps. She believed that Dance "should be natural and expressive". Ballet technique grew increasingly spectacular, and the skirts became shorter and shorter. This overcome the problem of wearing "caleons de precaution" (precautionary drawers) to keep their legs covered in the resulting whirls. Marie Salle further shocked audiences with the show of more skin, by discarding petticoats and replacing with a flimsy Muslim dress, and this I feel was very important in revolutionising the performance of dance in opera houses as it enabled the development of gliding leaps we see today which also attracted more audiences.

Start drawing pictures on the board

An innovating designer at the Paris Opera named Maillot overcome the heavy weight of these clothing by introducing tights. Believe it or not but these thin garments of nylon revolutionised the world of dance forever. Tights allowed a significant degree of freedom that dancers had never before experienced. Dances were no longer limited to simple elegant steps, but complex as well as dramatic athletic movement became possible, allowing ballet to move far beyond its previous limited boundaries.

The bell-shaped Romantic dress of the mid-1800s gave way to the famous tutu at the end of the 1th century. Connoisseurs of ballet, the Russians also wanted to see the new technical feats and fancy footwork of their ballerinas. The new long, floppy, 16 layer tutus reached to the knee and allowed the female dancers much greater mobility in such technically demanding ballets as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Paquita. George Balanchines athletic choreography led to the creation of the shorter powder-puff tutu that is worn in Symphony . These tutus allow the entire leg to be seen and so today, the standard ballet skirt, the tutu, ends well above the knees.

To enhance the image of the ballerina as light and elusive, the Pointe shoe was introduced, enabling women to dance on the tips of their toes. The tips of these shoes are made with layers of cloth and glue, the layers strengthen the tips, giving the dancer support. Each dancer fitted with the Pointe shoes must have good strong feet leg muscles, good placement and a correct ballet technique. Without these shoes imagine how uncomfortable it was when early 1800s dancers wore small heeled firm shoes that they would again use as everyday shoes?

Modern dancers wore the new leotard for their practice wear. Invented by the trapeze artist Jules Leotard, the original leotard consisted of a close-fitting suit of knitted jersey, which reached to the wrists and ankles; the womans version came with a short fringed skirt. Today, the leotard is the accepted uniform of dancers around the world and is designed in many attractive patterns, colours and materials.

Bare legs were never very popular with dancers for practice sessions since the leg muscles must be kept continually warm. Today dancers wear not only leotards and tights but also wool leg warmers and/or plastic pants over their tights in order to keep their muscles warm and supple.

The best ballet costumes are light and simple. They show all the lines of the body and never interfere with the dancers movements. Even in historical ballets, freedom of movement is more important than costumes that look exactly like the clothing of the time. I'm sure you all will agree that dancewear is a important part of the development in Ballet as it has enabled great dancers and choreographers to create techniques that make it look as though heavenly figures glide effortlessly across the stage and open up new possibilities in Ballet as an art form.

To build an effective strategy, business leaders must involve may parts of the business. This helps to ensure that the e-business solution is tightly integrated into the business and business strategy. Some things that should be considered when building the strategy

What are the core business objectives of the e-business initiative (including an examination of what competitors are doing and what lies ahead in the market place)?

Buy cheap internet technology term paper

Which of the companys products and services will be involved in the e-business initiatives?

Which processes can be improved by applying internet technology?

What customers does the company wants to attract and serve?

What do customers and partners expect and demand in terms of customer care and service?

What level of financial and personnel support can the business commit?

What new issues will the company face once their e-business site is running (security, privacy, regulatory, etc)?

According to the Gartner Group, Enterprises that have implemented e-commerce as part of a business strategy have been more successful in reducing business cycle times, improving cash flows, reducing inventories, decreasing administrative costs, and opening new markets and distribution channels.

Developing an effective e-business strategy isnt always good enough by itself. In order to be truly effective, the company must have the right characteristics to successfully implement the strategy. Some of the characteristics of companies that have developed and implemented successful e-business strategies are

They are willing to change,

They have adaptive strategies,

They understand and focus on partnerships, and

They look at the market differently.

Define the vision

Probably the most important step in defining an e-business strategy is defining the vision and goals for the business. To do this, the company must think about why they want to be on-line. Are they going on-line because being on the internet is the latest and greatest place to do business, or because some expert has told them to go online? Many business who have done poorly on the internet have done so because they ignored the question of why.

Before beginning to layout their vision, companies should spend some time doing research. Their research should focus on two areas understanding what the internet provides and what are competitors doing. An understanding of what the internet technology can provide is important foundation of the e-business strategy. An understanding of what competitors are doing in their e-business systems will help the company formulate their strategy with an eye towards what customers expect from the current market.

The next question that needs to be addressed is what opportunities are available? As we have seen, there are a large number of opportunities available on the internet. Three of these opportunities include

1. Selling products directly (most people think of this first…) In this case, the company has to decide if their products and services are appropriate for the net. Some products, like automobiles and homes, require high levels of customer service and personal attentions, and may not be appropriate for internet sales. Other products, however, like books, music, and consumer electronics, may be much more suited for the internet.

. Providing information, or brochureware. In this case, no immediate revenue may be recognized, but it can educate customers and direct them to offline outlets, or help build an off-line (or on-line) brand

. Improving business processes. In this case, the company can utilize the internet to enhance the supply chain with an eye towards streamlining processes and cutting costs.

If the major goal of the strategy is to target customers, then the business must decide whether they are going to focus the system on new customers, existing customers, or both. Each type of customer has its own set of considerations that affect the strategy

New customers - how are you going to get them to the site, and once they are there, how are you going to keep them, and get them to return? If this is the focus, then lots of marketing collateral available on the site.

Existing customers - focus on functionality, like reporting and inventory management. There isnt much of a need to spend time talking about the value of a product if they are already a customer. Instead, talk about how to help them manage the use of the product or their inventories.

Both - content for new customers and private access to special functions for customers and partners.

Initially, the vision should focus on high-return, high-profile alternatives. Since the internet is a revolutionary technology, the team that is developing the vision and goals should be encouraged to think out-of-the box when reviewing alternatives.

Finally, once the vision has been developed, it must be documented and used to guide the development of the e-business strategy.
