Review A gifted storyteller is one who makes his subject come alive. Charles Jencks is unequivocally architectures greatest living storyteller, He has probably produced nearly as many books and articles during his prolific career as did Le Corbusier, the subject of his latest work. In Le Corbusier and the Continual Revolution in Architecture, Jencks has woven together readings of Corbs writings, paintings, architecture, and city planning with pertinent (and sometimes impertinent) biographical details. It is an epic poem in the tradition of Chaucer, and can be read as such.

Jenckss style is jocular, freewheeling, anecdotal, and provocative-- as he is in person. In this book there is much on Le Corbusier that has been said before, by Jencks himself as well as others. Le Corbusier and the Continual Revolution is, in large measure, a revision and vastly expanded version of his Le Corbusier and the Tragic View of Architecture (Harvard University Press, 17), drawing upon research and testimony that continue to emerge about a man whom Jencks believes to be not only a tragic persona, but a genius as well. He rewrites, splices, condenses, expands, speculates, and even offers his own chart of history so that we may easily visualize developments.

Jencks is true to his signature method of interpretation, which proceeds by analogy and metaphor, with limitless imagination. However, he also follows, or leads, a trend in architectural theorizing that has become widespread in the late 0th century, namely to look to other realms of intellectual inquiry for insight and guidance. The absence of a single, comprehensive, overarching theory that might serve practitioners has led would-be theorists, writers, and teachers of architecture to seek parallels within other disciplines, such as literature, linguistics, and sociology. Jenckss references range from Noam Chomsky and semiology in the 170s to the sociology of David Harvey and David Herf in the 10s, illustrating that he has kept abreast of cutting-edge theory. Most recently he has forayed into cognitive science, finding in it another means for classifying (something the author claims he dislikes) the crucial facts of Le Corbusiers biography to fit a type, namely of the typical genius, or basically protean type of creative individual.

Fortunately for readers who have not yet read Howard Gardners Creating Minds An Anatomy of Creativity Seen Through the Lives of Freud, Einstein, Picasso, Stravinsky, Eliot, Graham and Gandhi (Basic Books, 1), Jencks includes an appendix summarizing his theory. Gardner explores seven figures whom he calls Exemplary Creators, individuals who radically altered their fields, yet also shared common features in their development. To Gardners Big Seven, Jencks wants to include an eighth Le Corbusier. His previous comparisons between Corb and Don Quixote, Nietzches Zarathustra, Jesus Christ, etc., are also present in the new book. What remains unclear is the purpose of introducing a new paradigm in which to slip Corb. Is it fundamental to our understanding of Le Corbusier that he fit the pattern of a genius of the caliber of Einstein or Stravinsky? He loved the idea of standardization and the type, says Jencks, who then concludes, so he would have liked to be considered a normal genius, warts and all, with all the nasty and cruel truths revealed in the end. It is sufficient to say, as Jencks ultimately does, that Corb was a man driven by a vision and leave it at that, rather than apply a label that has become a cliche.

Richly coded as a result of Le Corbusiers obsession with symbolism, Ronchamp is proto-postmodern, according to Jencks. In this collage, he highlights the multiple readings of its forms and imagery (above). Drawings by Hillel Schocken (facing page) also depict some of the metaphors that Ronchamp evokes.

The tone Jencks adopts throughout the book is one of revelation, as he ostensibly divulges important facts we never knew about the great architect. He is consciously rewriting 0th-century architectural history to reveal Le Corbusier as its most revolutionary and inventive designer. (Jencks claims elsewhere that Antonio Gaudi, too, deserves that honor.) Some years ago Jencks invented the elaborate Evolutionary Tree for architecture, various versions of which have appeared in his books over the years, including The Language of Postmodern Architecture (Rizzoli, 177). He is continually updating the tree, which appears now in this book, spanning the period 100to 000 and depicting 40-odd movements and 400 persons producing six types of architecture. The author points out that his revolutionary Le Corbusier-no longer evolutionary-- appears four times (more than any other figure), and that he invented four or five different languages in architecture.

Jencks has built a career on the game of signification as he calls it, which is based upon finding hidden coding and new metaphors, each more astounding than the previous ones. But one begins to suspect that the exercise of rewriting, or revising, previous books is self-serving in more ways than one. Having a vested interest in postmodernism as a concept, Jencks now offers Le Corbusier as the grandfather of the movement because his work, Ronchamp in particular, is imbedded with the multivalence[s] of meaning so cherished by the postmodernists. This makes the building, in Jenckss words, a harbinger of postmodern architecture. He likens the chapels distinctive form to a nuns cowl, a monks hood, a ships prow, praying hands. Setting off on a game of Hunt the Symbol, as he calls it, Jencks identifies with a certain surety the formal similarities behind different symbols. Le Corbusiers Ubu sculptures, fractal geometry, and anthropomorphism (ear-like forms) generated the plan and shape of Ronchamp, Jencks asserts, among other metaphorical readings.

As we know, with raconteurs much of the story is in the telling. A recurrent theme favored by Jencks in his repeat performances on Corb is the supposed relationship between the architects sex life and his architecture. The chapters Jeanneret Discovers Sex in a Pot, The Primitive and the Sexual, and Josephine [Baker]-Goddess of Dance, as well as long discussions of Le Corbusiers purported affairs with Marguerite Tjader-- Harris and Minnette De Silva take us into armchair psychology and moral speculation that can only increase the popularity of this book. Jencks has always supported the notion that female shapes in Corbs paintings could be correlated with aspects of his urban-planning projects for Rio and Algiers. The reader is offered further evidence of Corbs sexual obsessions (big hips), voyeurism (sketching women cavorting in brothels), in addition to extra-- marital affairs, but these will have little impact on our overall long-term assessment of Corbs architecture.

On the subject of Chandigarh, however, (the city in India designed by Le Corbusier) Jencks makes insightful remarks. Invited to Chandigarh in 1 to participate in a symposium commemorating the citys 50th anniversary, he had the opportunity to learn a great deal-especially from the Indians, but also from other foreigners. In opening his remarks to the assembly of survivors of modernism, and speaking as a postmodernist, Jencks asked, What would Le Corbusier do today for Chandigarh as a city? Almost lost in ethereal discussions about solar rituals and transcendentalism was a proposal that polarized opinion to re-urbanize and densify Chandigarh, beginning with the explanade of the capitol. While it is pure speculation whether or not Corb would accept this kind of growth, Jencks does well to raise the issue of this city and other planned modern cities within what he calls an ecology of succession layers of growth that permit conservation, but also accept change.

What is disturbing in Jenckss approach is his ignorance, or purposeful omission, of some of the very best Corb scholarship of the last 5 years, including work by Manfredo Tafuri, Bruno Reichlin, Jacques Lucan, Giuliano Gresleri, as well as Alan Colquhoun and Kenneth Frampton. This seems to point at the deep gulf that separates Jenckss particular genre of interpretation from that of many of his colleagues. Nonetheless he modestly admits, One is bound to be wrong, or at least too limited, in any attempt to fix his essential contribution. The interpretations that are usually made are either contradicted by Le Corbusiers supremely dialectical development, or they pale beside the creative wealth of his output. As biography, Le Corbusier and the Continual Revolution in Architecture provides highly readable, entertaining speculation about the life and nature of a normal genius.

Conflict Management

Abstract

Within my organization there are difficulties with conflict management. When dealing with conflict management internally one must see how the organization works, and how the polices are, as to what you can and cannot do. The management styles vary significantly and this causes the stress level to soar. Each have their own way, and it causes the others to suffer by not knowing what is going on. This paper will contain the differences between management.

Conflict Management

Webster's dictionary describes conflict as " a competitive or opposing action of incompatibles antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons) b mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands."(Merriam-Webster). Beyond these definitions there are two kinds of conflict that are involved in a work environment setting. (Organizational Behavior 7th Ed). They are "Substantive conflict and Emotional conflict". Substantive conflict is what most managers' experience. At my company there are four supervisors and one director. The supervisors get together to try to make things better for the company, and change certain goals and responsibilities to make the company run more efficiently. When they have a meeting with the director, it is like talking to a brick wall. She never wants to try anything new or change; it is her way or the high way. Substantive conflict is high in this case. Each supervisor tries to work through conflicts amongst themselves, and in most cases it is resolved and never goes any higher. For the most part, if the director wants something done, it is usually something that is not ever feasible in the time line that is given. This causes major conflict amongst her and the supervisor she has asked to do the tasks.

Conflict Management 4

The director is never open, or communicates properly to avoid miscommunications. Her style is one most wouldn't agree with. It contradicts everything one is ever taught about conflict management. The fundamentals are easy I like to always use the do unto others philosophy. If you cannot negotiate, and be open to new ideas you will run into major conflicts amongst the managers, and employees of the company.

My techniques are I would be open in what I wanted out of everyone, and if there was a question, or an idea being open is the best approach. You never tell a manger or employee that you don't want to hear what they have to say. By trying to listen, compromise, and be willing to adjust to change is what I like to do. However, this is not the case at my organization. For example, I was told that I was to enthusiastic about my job and had to mellow out a little on motivation, that I was to happy all the time and that was not excepted at this company. This is a great example of substantive conflict, I guess her views of where she wanted the company appearance should be was a 180 degrees different than mine.

Conflict Management 5

Emotional conflict is the next conflict. Again this is seen on a day-to-day basis in many originations. About every hour you hear an angered voice from the intercom, and hope that it is not your name being called to the directors office. Everyone cringes when you here the directors voice. You can never be right to her. Most days you have to defend your employees, and hear how you're not doing your job right. When she calls certain employees in to her office, you can hear emotions raging. Sometimes you hear yelling, and screaming along with some not, so jester appropriate sayings.

Being aware, of how you can handle conflict, is the key to finding a happy medium to better managing conflict with employees and others. After taking the assessment twenty tests on conflict management gave me an insight to how I would deal with this subject. My result is as follows.

Conflict Management 6

Assessment 0 Results

Competing 10

Collaborating

Avoiding 8

Accommodating 6

The numbers indicate to me that I am a very competitive person, and tend to agree with most. On the other hand I need to work on avoiding and accommodating. As you can see it appears that I dont accommodate very much, this is do to the fact no room for error polices I have. Safety is the first step to keeping employees productive.

In conclusion, I find that my personal management preference is very different than my directors. Therefore, I am going to not deviate from my standards, but work through what I can at my current job to maintain structure. Dealing with conflict can be dealt with, however, finding the right happy medium is the key. Conflict is a two way street and has to be dealt with tact and without emotional connections.

Alice In Wonderland

In Lewis Carrolls novel Alice in Wonderland, Alice is curious, well mannered, and confused while she tries to find her way out of Wonderland. Alice meets many unique and weird creatures which eventually help her escape wonderland. Alice shows that she is curious through her actions. At the beginning of the book Alice gets distracted from her boring work, and chases a white rabbit down a hole. This excerpt describes Alices curiosity, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed in her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket. When Alice is at the bottom of the hole she find a bottle labeled Drink Me, she wants to see what it tastes like, this excerpt describes the event ...this bottle was not marked poison, so Alice ventured to taste it, finding it very nice. Another instant that shows her curiosity when she looks for the white rabbits fan and gloves, she finds a bottle, this time there was no table, There was no label this time with the words Drink Me ... I know something interesting is going to happen ... Ill just see what it does," Alice is like a little girl that is still exploring the world around her, but she finds that she is more mature than the creatures in Wonderland.

Alice is very well mannered in Victorian ways to the creatures of Wonderland. Alice shows her good manners when she enters the white rabbits house and the rabbit tells Alice to go fetch his gloves and fan, Id better take his fan and gloves- that is if I can find them, since Alice is a guest, uninvited, she follows the owners orders. When Alice runs into caterpillar she calls him Sir, here is an excerpt from the book, I cant explain myself myself, Im afraid, Sir, this shows that she respects the creatures of Wonderland. When Alice enters the Duchesses house and the Duchess throws the baby to Alice, Alice starts to take care of it, Here! You may nurse it a bit, if you like! Alice caught the baby with some difficulty..." this shows her maternal side. Wonderland is an illogical land; nothing seems to make sense to Alice. She starts to become very frustrated and confused. When Alice meets the caterpillar the following conversation takes place, Who are you! the caterpillar asked ... I - I hardly know, Sir, just at present - at least I know who I was when I got up this morning ... , Alice is so confused she does not even know who she is. Before Alice enters the Duchesses house she knocks on the front door, the following conversation takes place with a creature, Alice went up to the door and knocked, There is no use in knocking ... Please, then said Alice How am I to get in? , This proves that the illogical reasoning that the creatures find logical is confusing to a Victorian girl.

Alice is curious because she is very young and she is still finding out about the world around her. Throughout the novel she grows up and matures because she starts to unlock the illogical reasoning of Wonderland and begins to respect their weird habits. Even through all the confusion, she still finds home at the end of the novel.

My Goals and Dreams

This decision to return back to school, has been somewhat of a dream of mine. A dream that I kept tossing around but never did anything about, until the day I walked into the Walnut Creek office of the University of Phoenix. As I listened to my Counselor explain in details about the University, which entailed a lot of information. I now know that I need to make a decision that will finally end my search to fulfill dreams.

Cheap University Papers on My Goals and Dreams

As I toss the idea around in my mine, I begin to feel a bit anxious then a rush of fear started to over take me with visions of my not so pleasant days back in school. The days when no one understood what I was going through and I had to figure things out myself. Was I going to allow my High School to break me down or figure some way to make it to graduation, without knowing what my life has in stored for me?

Well I made it to graduation how I don't quite know but I graduated. My life begins now. What should a person do once they have graduated High School and feel they haven't learned anything to prepare them for life outside of school? They do what they know and what I knew was how to be a good wife. My mother showed my sisters and me the basic fundamentals of being a wife. So I decided to get married when my then boyfriend Arnold proposed to me a year after I graduated. We were married and had a beautiful baby boy, my life seemed good but I began to feel a bit inadequate when I converse with people. I then started to want more for myself then just being a wife and mother. Don't get me wrong I was a great wife and mother but I needed more. So I applied into some certified nurses aide program at Hilo Hospital. After receiving a certificate from the program I was hired on at the hospital as a nurse aide. Meanwhile, my marriage was going in the direction of Arnold and me filing for divorce.

Now I have a chance to take control of my life again, and to fulfill my dreams of educating my mind to better my chances in achieving a job so I will be able to support myself and my child.

Living on the Big Island of Hawaii doesn't give you many opportunities so I decided to relocate to California which I did. My decision was not an easy one because I decided not to take my son away from his father and disrupt his life so I can fulfill mine. I realized no matter what I decided my sons life would be disrupted, but I just wanted it to be the best decision for him.

As I begin to experience California and what it has to offer me I fall into another relationship and the next thing I know I'm doing what I know best being a wife and a mother too now a beautiful baby girl. As time passes, I enroll into Chabot Community College to begin my prerequisite for the registered nurse program. I also work full time on a grave yard shift at Humana Hospital. As for my marriage I began to resent TJ, my husband because he insisted I quit school which I did. As for my marriage, it also ended in divorce.

Here it is a chance to make my dreams become a reality, am I going to jump at the chance to finally fulfill what I have been longing for or let this become another "I should have." I quickly placed all of my fears into a box in my mind and tied a knot to it. I will follow my own preaching words that I continue to bark at my own children "It is never too late to learn" and with that being said I proceeded with registering into the University of Phoenix to continue my education.

As several days go by, the knot on the box that I have stored in my mind, began to unravel allowing my anxieties as well as my fears to over take me. A vision of how difficult it was back in High School, as I recalled, how I use to freeze during exams, and when I would forget the subject matter of the lectures as well as the lectures itself. It would make it difficult to complete my homework, resulting in a poor grade and being disciplined not only in school but at home.

As I embark on this path, I ask myself. What will I gain? Will I learn better this time around? Will I be able to get the education required to better my career? So why do I want to put myself through this? That is the question I have asked myself over and over again throughout my adult life. The only answer that releases all my fears and anxieties are. This is my dream and I have the opportunity to fulfill it. Face these new challenges with a positive attitude and confidence in myself to Succeed.

I have faced a challenge though it has taken several drafts I have been able to search deeply inside myself and convert my feelings into words to be able to express how I feel in regards to returning to school. It begins to get easier as I continue to realize the possibilities that are out there for me to achieve the goals I set for myself.

As a student attending the University of Phoenix, my personal goal I would like to achieve is to complete all assignments due to receive a passing grade. Another goal is to attend every workshop with enthusiasm and the drive to learn.

Knowing it is up to me, I am in control of the goals I set the only persons' approval I need is mine.

"For many years literary critics have claimed that it is not the author but the work that is important and for a reader to fully understand a text they must distance themselves from the author¹." However writing is traditionally considered a reflection of self and therefore knowledge of a writers life can add meaning and insight to a text. Writing and particularly styles of writing have transformed over many years mainly to reflect society's beliefs and values and it is because of this, readers can gain understanding by having a basic knowledge of the era and the author. So to say that the authors background is of no significance in understanding their work is in my view in correct.

In July 14 Anne Frank and her family, fleeing the horrors of Nazi persecution, hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. Anne at the time is thirteen when the family goes into the secret annex and over the next two years she vividly describes in her diary the frustrations of living in such confined quarters and the constant threat of discover. For the reader to grasp a clearer understanding of the book they must firstly be aware of the fact that the text 'The Diary of a young girl' is about a young Jewish girl who like many other Jews during World War II were persecuted under Hitler's regime.

"Our lives were not without anxiety, since our relatives

in Germany were suffering under Hitler's anti-Jewish laws.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Knowledge of an authors background enhance the meaning of a text

After the pogroms in 18 my two uncles fled Germany

finding safe refuge in North America.

My elderly grandmother came to live with us"

The two key words in that quote are highly important to the reader mainly due to the fact that they give a background of what was happening to the European Jews from 18 to 144. For the reader to gain a full understanding of Anne's writing they must be aware of the fact that these two words were a part of her life. The word pogrom basically means death by burning and it was a practice that many Jews were subjected to in Russia prior to World War II. The phrase anti-Jewish laws is best described by Anne on page 8 of the text which says;

"Our freedom was severely restricted by a series

of anti-Jewish decrees Jews were required to wear

a yellow star; Jews were required to turn in their bicycles;

Jews were forbidden to use trams; Jews were forbidden to ride

in cars, even their own; Jews were required to frequent

only Jewish- owned barbershops and beauty salons;

Jews were forbidden to be out on the streets between 8.00pm

and 6.00am; Jews were forbidden to go to the cinemas

or any other forms of entertainment; Jews were forbidden

to use swimming pools, tennis courts, hockey fields or any

other athletic fields; Jews were forbidden to go rowing;

Jews were forbidden to take part in any athletic activity

in public; Jews were forbidden to visit Christians in

their homes; Jews were required to attend Jewish schools, etc"

Throughout the text Anne reflects on her days in hiding and what she believes is happening in the outside world, her last diary entry( Tuesday 1st of August 144) explains her final experiences in the annex before her family are found and taken to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where she later dies of typhoid fever. For the reader to make full 'sense' of the text, basic knowledge of Nazi Germany is priceless in terms of creating meaning and understanding. Also acknowledgment of the fact that the author is a teenage girl and that her thoughts and actions reflect this. Joseph Heller's Catch- provides another example of the link between a writer and their work.

Joseph Heller is a Jewish- American novelist born in New York 1. He served as a bombardier in the American air force during the Second World War, an experience which resurfaced in the novel Catch-. Catch- is first of all a war novel and therefore knowledge about the war can again provide some extra meaning. But the most important tool in providing meaning is the recognition that Heller like so many novelist before him was writing a story on a very tragic era in modern history, one that shaped literature forms of the twentieth century. Like Heller said in 14 " when people our age speak of the war it is not of Vietnam but of the one that broke out half a century ago and raged in almost all the world striking fear in the heart of every human being." Catch- is a book that perhaps more than any other before it voiced the reaction of a generation to a conflict that had taken the lives of thousands of service men and women.

As mentioned previously Heller himself was a bombardier stationed in Italy during the closing campaigns of the war and it is through this experience he creates the fictional character of Yossarian. At the beginning of the book Yossarian is in hospital after a bad injury contemplating the war and figuring out the characters sharing the room with him. During this chapter Heller mentions the concept of censoring written letters to loved ones " Catch- required that each censored letter bear the censoring officers name." The censoring of letters happened throughout the entire war and was used to prevent disclosure of information about allied movements and problems being faced. In some instances soldiers were not allowed to contact family and friends because the enemy may have got hold of the letters. By understanding this concept of Catch- the reader can gain a better understanding of the war and in particular the life of the soldiers. Catch- is another fine example of a writers life experiences being reflected in a novel, and therefore understanding the relevance of these experiences creates meaning and insight. Another very accomplished and well known author is John Grisham.

Over the past two decades John Grisham has become one of the most accomplished and acclaimed modern novelist. His works, many of which have been turned into feature films all share the theme of the law and the American justice system. Knowledge about Grisham's life does provide some meaning for the reader in terms of the language used and the characters presented. Grisham himself studied law and also served in the Mississippi House of Representatives which explains his extensive knowledge of the American legal system and why his books are based on it. The text ' The Street Lawyer' is a novel that deals with homelessness but also reflects Grisham's work as a pro- bono lawyer after graduating from university. The main character (Michael Brock) leaves a big law firm and joins a legal clinic set up to help the homeless. The clinic in which he joins, 14th Street Legal Clinic is very similar to the Washington legal clinic which Grisham worked at, in that he worked in a shabby building helping the poor.

" The place was a dump. The windows on the top

floor were boarded with aging plywood. Next

door was a grungy Laundromat. The crack house

couldn't be far away."

Grisham's career and experiences come out in many of his novels and this helps in adding meaning to the plot and characters. The reflection of a writers career in a text is not a new idea, this technique was also employed by Henry Lawson when writing his poems and short stories.

Henry Lawson is one of Australia's greatest writers and many of his poems and short stories reflect his years in the bush and his concerns with hardship and suffering that bush pioneers faced. His acclaimed collection includes the poem the Ballad of the Drover, which is about a young Australian drover who perishes on his way home. Lawson was familiar with the life of a drover because he himself spent many years out in the bush.

" Up Queensland way with cattle,

He travelled regions vast,

And many months have vanished,

Since home folk saw him last."

Here Lawson explains of the typical Australian male in that era, many of them would travel thousands of kilometres and disappear for months even years. In 10 Lawson separated from his wife and children and spent the next 0 years of his life drunk, unemployed and producing some poetry but his best work was behind him.

The poem 'Faces in the street' somewhat reflects this time in his life.

" Save here and there a face that seems a stranger

in the street, tells of the cities unemployment upon his wear

beat."

Despite his unhappy life Lawson has made an enduring contribution to Australian literature. The way we see ourselves and the way we view our heritage owes much to Lawson's poems and stories.

The understanding of a writers background provides not just historical context but also personal perspective and frame of reference and at the same time improves the readers ability to interpret the text critically.

Joe Wentworth

In the movie Simon Birch, Joe Wentworth was Simon's best friend. Simon and Joe became friends because both of them were outcasts. Simon was a dwarf and Joe did not know who his father was. They got along with each other very well and they also got into a lot of trouble together.

Their elders in the church were always scolding them. That is part of why Joe doubted God's existence. He was a very religious person who always went to church. However, his doubts overcame him and he did not have the faith that he should have.

Joe doubted God even more after his mother died. He did not have a father and then he lost his mother. Joe's mother was hit in the head by a baseball that was hit by Simon. This put a temporary strain on Simon and Joe's friendship.

In light of it all, Joe was in high spirits most of the time. He had extreme emotions. When he was happy he was very happy, and when he was down he was very down. There was no medium for Joe's feelings.

Joe was smart and funny. He got into situations with Simon and somehow found humor in it all. He was physically and mentally strong. He had to be to make it through everything that happened to him. Joe was very confident of himself and what he could do. He was also very hesitant of meeting new people. He had so many negatives in his life it was hard for him to think positively about someone.

When Joe's mother brought her new boyfriends to their house Joe rejected him without ever getting to know him. He showed Joe that he was different from other people because he was still there after his mother had died. In the end Joe chose this man to be his father and take care of him.

Joe also showed that he could do good. When the church bus wrecked, Joe and Simon worked together to save all of the kids on the bus. When there were no adults there that could help, Joe became more responsible.

Joe was a very interesting character. He had a different personality and a different outlook on life. His distorted concept of reality made him into the unique individual he was.

Is HDTV available currently on Comcast in Colorado?

Not at this time. We are planning to offer the service in some rebuild areas later this year.

When will HDTV be available?

Our plan is to launch HDTV in the metro Denver rebuild areas in August - the outer market areas are not yet determined.

Custom Essays on Comcast Brainwashing Employees

What programming will Comcast offer in HDTV?

Comcast will offer HBO and Showtime (one channel each) in HDTV plus a few local broadcast stations. We are still negotiating with the local broadcast stations for carriage rights.

How will I know when it is available in my area?

Comcast promotes new products & services to customers within an area within a few weeks of availability.

Will I need a new digital converter for HDTV?

Yes. The new converter will be available from Comcast when the service is launched.

Why should I want HDTV?

HDTV offers the best quality picture available today. Along with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on some HDTV programming, it offers an unparalleled experience in Home Theater entertainment.

Can I record HDTV content? What equipment is required?

Recording HDTV on VHS or DVD requires specialized recording devices. Some HDTV recording devices are available today, but are very expensive and may not be compatible with the digital converter.

Will I see any impact on the quality of my programming if I dont have a HDTV?

Customers without a HDTV monitor will not be affected by the addition of HDTV on the system, nor will the format of any existing programming change as a result of adding HD programming on the system. HDTV channels are entirely separate channels from existing analog and digital channels.

Does HDTV-Ready mean I dont need a decoder?

No. HDTV-Ready means that the monitor can display HDTV signals, but a decoder is always required, and different HDTV signal sources (off-air, DBS, cable) require different decoders. Some HDTV sets are sold with an integrated decoder for use with either off-air broadcast HDTV signals or DBS HDTV signals. However, these decoders will not decode a HDTV signal on a cable plant, so a special Comcast digital converter is required to receive HD signals.

How much programming in this format can I expect to see in the next few years?

More and more content providers are adding HDTV programming to their lineups, and additional dedicated HD networks have been announced. The quantity and selection of available HD content will continue to increase, especially as more consumers upgrade to HDTV capable televisions. Plus, many more of the local broadcast stations are planning to offer HDTV in the future.

Do Satellite providers offer HDTV? Is this a competitive advantage for us?

Both DirecTV and Echostar currently offer a limited number of HD national channels in their lineup. DirecTV offers HDNet (a dedicated HD network), Showtime and HBO. Echostar currently offers HBO, Showtime, and Discovery HD. However, DBS does not provide any local broadcast stations in HD, and most likely will not offer these signals in the future due to bandwidth constraints. This offers Comcast a big competitive advantage.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Hamlet

One of the most unique elements of the Hamlet character is that he is so human. Many

types of readers can identify with him. Hamlet is imperfect, and he is fretful. Hamlet has

human properties, and it is his humanity that I intend to explore. Indeed it is these human

qualities and imperfections that make his story so tragic. Another tragic part of the play is

the plays irony. Irony is an important tool in the hands of the playwright to achieve both

comical and/or dramatic effect. There is usually little reason for a tragedy to be funny, so

Shakespeare has used this tool to add more tragedy to the play. I will investigate the

nature of this irony. Also, I will investigate the types of conflict that play a major part in

the play and the relationships between Hamlet and the two people who have been closest

to him; Ophelia and the Ghost.

Hamlet cannot share his strong feelings and emotions with his mother or his

girlfriend. While his mother is literally sleeping with the enemy, Ophelia has chosen the

side of Claudius because of her father, Polonius. It is especially difficult for Hamlet to

talk to Ophelia. The only other woman in his life, Gertrude, has betrayed his father by

marrying Claudius. Hamlet may be obsessed with the idea that all women are evil, yet he

really does love Ophelia, because when he finds out Ophelia has died, he cries out, I lovd

Ophelia; forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my

sum.(Act V, Scene 1)

The ghost provides Hamlet with a dilemma. In Shakespeares plays, supernatural

characters are not always to be trusted; think of the three witches in MacBeth, who are

instrumental in his downfall. Hamlet does not know whether the ghost is telling the truth

or not. If Hamlet had killed Claudius solely on the ghosts advice, he would certainly have

been tried and put to death himself. There would probably have been a war to choose the

new king. Being the humanitarian that he is, and taking account of his responsibilities as a

prince and future king, Hamlet most likely would want to avoid civil war. Even though

Claudius is a murderer, and probably not as noble a king as Hamlets father was, he is still

a king. He brings order to Denmark. Hamlet does not wish to plunge his country into

chaos. He realizes that this will happen when he kills Claudius. Hamlet is unable to

combine the spiritual world (in the form of his fathers ghost) with the tangible, every-day

world that surrounds him.

There is much irony throughout this play. One occurrence of irony I found

particularly striking was the fact that Hamlet effectively maneuvers himself into the same

position as Claudius. Claudius had attacked and killed a man who did not have the

opportunity to defend himself, but when Hamlet kills Polonius, is he not guilty of the

same? It is intriguing that both Claudius and Hamlet have killed fathers. It is interesting

to see how these two completely different characters deal with this problem in different

ways.

Other interesting parallels I found are the numerous deaths by poison. Hamlets father

was murdered by Claudius with poison. In the final act, the queen is the first to be

poisoned, by drinking from Hamlets cup. Then, Hamlet is wounded by the poisoned tip

of Laertes sword. When they change swords, Hamlet gets the upper hand and Laertes is

poisoned. When the queen dies, Laertes explains all to Hamlet, before he dies. Hamlet

then kills Claudius before dying himself. It is ironic that, as Claudius is poisoned because

of his own plotting, he had already signed his own death warrant when he killed Hamlets

father, the first tragic action of the play. There are only three people in this play who

dont die by poisoning Rosencrantz and Guildenstern meet their deaths in England, after

being outsmarted by Hamlet. The third is Ophelia, who is drowned.

There are three types of conflict I can identify in the play man versus man, man

versus nature and man versus himself. Hamlets fight with Laertes in Ophelias grave and

the subsequent duel would both easily classify as man versus man conflicts. Man also

struggles with nature in this play, most notably in the form of Ophelias drowning and

Hamlets crossing the sea to England - although the latter conflict plays more of a

background role.

The man versus himself conflict is most directly exposed in Hamlets famous soliloquy,

where he is wrestling with his conscience. The realization he comes to in this soliloquy is

that we are afraid to kill ourselves because we do not know what is to be found after

death. Another man versus himself conflict is Claudius inability to pray. He cannot

really justify his past deeds. For him this is actually another step into darkness.

Hamlet may be a thinking man; however, this does not mean he actually likes to think.

Although he might have liked to think in the time preceding the play, when the time has

come for him to take action, he cannot because of this urge to contemplate. His capacity

of thinking becomes a handicap rather than an advantage. And this is not even the most

painful or tragic part of the Hamlet character. The biggest problem is that he is aware of

this. Not only is he incapable of acting without thinking, he knows that this is the case,

which makes the burden even heavier. Hamlet cannot face reality. It is already a

traumatic experience for him when he has to believe the words of the ghost, and actually

the ghosts demanding him to act on this information is too much for him.

Hamlet is however, a man of decision. But he is also contemplative. He needs to think

in order to justify his actions, and his intellectual characteristics are the major difference

between Claudius and himself. Hamlet is very aware of the relationship between action

and reaction and realizes that he has to proceed very carefully. In the play, Claudius is the

decisive character, and the man of action. He takes the first action, the action that sets the

story in motion - the poisoning of Hamlets father. He also instigates the final action, the

poisoning of the blades and the cup; an action that will backfire and cause his own death.

In the play, there seems to be a constant shift of action, where only one party can act at

any time. These two parties are of course Hamlet and Claudius. When Claudius has taken

the action that secures him the throne, he allows Hamlet to become the man of action.

But Hamlet procrastinates. The only action Hamlet takes is staging the play, which seems

more to serve the purpose to establish that Claudius is indeed guilty of his fathers murder.

He does this for himself and for Horatio. Then he proceeds to kill the eavesdropping

Polonius.

Hamlet is given the chance to avenge this foul and most unnatural murder when he

sees Claudius praying. Hamlet, being a Christian prince, cannot bring himself to kill

Claudius while he is praying, as this would secure his place in heaven. Hamlet wants to

make sure Claudius will suffer in the afterlife, just as his father did. Hamlet leaves just

before Claudius gets up, declaring he cannot pray; My words fly up, my thoughts remain

below Words without thoughts never to heaven go (Claudius, Act III, Scene ). Had

Hamlet known Claudius was unable to pray, then he could have had his revenge right then

and there, instead of waiting until the end, and taking everyone else with him.

Most of the other characters would probably have acted much quicker than Hamlet if

they were in his position. Imagine Polonius in the situation Hamlet found himself in. He

would not procrastinate as much. It would have most likely been off with the head of the

murderer! Any other character in the play would not have stayed as quiet as Hamlet does

(confiding only in his best friend, and even keeping the truth from his mother until the end

of Act III). Although not every one of them might have come to killing Claudius. But

Hamlet does not seem to do anything. Again, he thinks too much. But why?

Hamlet is self-conscious, while the majority of characters that surround him are not.

This explains why he feels inhibited to act. Hamlet resembles a real person more than any

other character in the play, which might be another reason why he still remains a subject of

discussion, and why the play remains so popular. Hamlet is one of the most interesting

characters in English fiction because we can identify with him, and understand, although

not always agree with his actions.

Hamlet is also set apart by his elusiveness. Many of the characters in the play can be

categorized within minutes of their introduction. Im not calling them caricatures, but

there is definitely a caricature-like side to some of them. The pompous Polonius and the

deceitful and thick-headed Guildenstern and Rozencrantz come to my mind. However,

this does not hold true for some other characters, such as Laertes and Ophelia.

The character of Hamlet refuses categorization. Interesting with regard to this is his

love of theater. He is particularly interested in the idea that things may seem different

from what they really are, just like the people that surround him. His mother is no longer

his fathers wife, but his uncles, his girlfriend is no longer there for him, and Guildenstern

and Rosencrantz are no longer his friends. Also, he is aware that he will have to disguise

himself and his real motives and goals in order to attain them - this is why he fakes his

madness. It is not until he picks up Yoricks skull in the beginning of Act V that he finds

out what is real and what not. In the end, when the truth is revealed and everyones

masks are removed, death is all that is to be found.

Growing up as an only child

There are so many different cultures in our world. The culture that I would like

to share is being raised an only child. I look around and realize that this culture is

Cheap Custom Essays on Growing up as an only child

relatively small as the majority of families have at least two or more children in them. I

rarely come across friends that I meet that are an only child. To be an only child isn't

bad but can sometimes be lonely. Growing up I always wished that someday I would

have a brother or a sister.

I could always remember asking my parents for a baby brother or sister

and wondered why they never had another one. I sometimes thought they didn't

want another child because I was so difficult to raise. Since I was never going to

have a sibling; I would go through life as being an only child. As an only child I would

get asked a lot of questions, such as do you get everything you want, do you like being

the only child and do you wish you had a brother or a sister? There was also tension

between my mom and I. Since I didn't have a sibling to fight with my mom and I would

get into a lot of arguments. Being the only child came with a lot of responsibilities that

only I could endure by myself. I was left to take care of my mom when my dad passed

away.

I grew up in Westlake Village in a neighborhood surrounded with big families. I

felt somewhat out of place since all my friends and neighbors had at least two children in

them. After years of asking for a brother or a sister, I finally realized my

parents were never going to grant me my wish. They told me that they couldn't afford to

have another child. I soon realized that I would always be an only child. Though

growing up as an only child wasn't bad but was lonely at times. It seemed that having a

sibling you would always have a playmate to play with all hours of the day. That is what

I feel that I missed out on the most. Everyday I would dread the idea that I would have to

stop playing and come in for the night. . Though for my friends it was

no big deal as they had there siblings to play with until they went to bed.

When I would have my friends come over to play they would always tell me

how lucky I was to be the only child. I would always tell them its okay but really I

wished too have had a brother or sister like them. They would look at me funny and say

"Why"? I would then have to explain to them that it gets boring being along all the time.

They even asked me to trade places with them to see if I would feel the same way, though

I never did. I think my friends were just jealous that I had certain things and that I didn't

have to share my belongings with anyone. I didn't have to compete with siblings for extra

attention like they did either or get hammy downs from an older brother or sister. Being

an only child had its advantages but nothing could compare to having a brother or sister.

To have a sibling to grow up with and share memories with would have been great.

Since I had no one to fight with my mom and I would get into a lot of arguments.

Most of the arguments would be about my room or about something petty. Some of our

fights had to be refereed by my dad since my mom and I would not let up. My

mom wished at times like those that they did have another child because my mom would

get tired of fighting with me. I believe if I did have a sibling my mom and I would have

had a better relationship. Even today my mom and I don't really get along.

Being the only child came with a few responsibilities that only I could endure.

Taking care of my parents was the biggest responsibility of them all. Since I was there

only child they relied on me for a lot of things. In November of 1, my mother

called me and told me my dad had cancer, that call would change my life forever. At that

time my parents lived in Las Vegas so I made trips back and forth from California to visit

my dad. There would be times that I would be there for weeks and how those weeks

took a definite toll on me to watch my dad who was once a body builder

wither away to just skin and bones. He lost his battle with cancer on April , 000.

All my mother could do after his death was to feel sorry for herself and how she

could never get a break in life. I wish at times like this we had a big family to get

support from. Between my father dying and my mother stressing me out I had a seizure

that was brought on from stress. The support from my mother was not very helpful, since

she was the cause of it. I felt like I had lost both of my parents. I believe if I had siblings

to grieve with and to share the responsibilities of taking care of my mom it would have

made a big difference.

Growing up as an only child I feel that I missed out on a lot. Not having any

brothers or sisters have left me feeling more alone since my dad died. Even today

I remember how happy I was as an only child but also wonder how different my life

would have been if I had brothers and sisters to grow up with.

Internet Gambling You are just a click away.

The thirst for gambling has always been present in the United States. It is an activity that can provide instant gratification, which almost everyone desires. The amount of gambling has increased substantially over the last few years due to the availability of online casinos. Before the advent of gambling online, one had very few options as to where he or she could gamble. Prior to the more recent Indian reservations (Biloxi, Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, etc), Las Vegas and Atlantic City were just about the only two places where Americans could gamble. Now all a person needs to gamble is have access to the Internet and a major credit card. The major issue to be dealt with Internet gambling is that it is spreading rapidly with little regulatory oversight and no effective screens against participation by the young and the vulnerable. Internet gambling represents one of the fastest growing segments of online activity with more than eighteen hundred web sites now providing users the opportunity to wager everything from casino games to sporting events (Kennedy ). Online gambling should be made completely illegal or should be controlled more heavily because it deceives gamblers into thinking that he or she even has a chance of winning and causes great threats to the individual and the society.

The rush you get from winning is something that is hard to parallel. Trust me I know. I almost became addicted to wagering online with just the click of the mouse. I realized the trouble I was heading for before it was too late. I was a lucky one. Many people however aren't as lucky. Imagine if everyone who had a computer had more than eighteen hundred casino's right in their own living room (Kennedy ). It is like everyone having access to crack cocaine all the time. Not quite as addictive, but one gets the idea. That is why I am for Internet gambling prohibition. Some people might say that prohibition isn't fair, that there are people who can handle the responsibility. Why should everyone suffer because some people can't handle it? I would tell them that in making a decision like whether or not Internet gambling prohibition should be enforced the benefits should outweigh the risks. In this case they definitely do.

The Internet Gambling industry deceives the gambler; it represents itself as an industry that provides instant gratification and the biggest payouts. Online casinos, however, forget to mention that the "house always wins," especially when the "house" cannot be regulated. Technology and the Internet make it possible for the Internet gambling industry to put information about payouts and promotions (that may not be valid) on their websites without the consent of the government. In The Collapse of Popular Culture, Robert Bork argues, "technology is now bringing worse material than we have ever seen or imagined, and, as technology develops further, the material will become still worse" (15). In today's society, computer technology plays an important role in many forms of entertainment, especially in the field of online casinos. Robert Bork would view online gambling as material that is corrupting America.

Skate group

I have a close group of friends which I like to skate and hang out with. They are andrew, jay and mark. As a group we would always go skating whenever possible over each others houses or anywhere close enough to skate to. This would include local schools, parks, shops and factories. One of our favourite spots was at a factory right next to marks house. We would all try and go there as much as possible and usually end up going back to marks after just to chill and watch videos because we would be too tired to do anything else. Marks family are people who find food to be a very important part of a persons life. Because of this they were constantly trying to shove food down our throats to eat, but being the picky eaters jay andrew and I were , we would always try and get out of eating the food that marks mum made us. However mark would never say no. we would usually be able to somehow get out of eating the food which we knew would make us sick.

on our way back to marks from a great skate at the factories, we were still ages away but already we could smell the stench coming from his mum cooking. As we walked closer we all held our noses except for mark. As we walked up into his back yard there must have been thousands of people there, they were some sought….. party . dancing around like… .i just put my head down and walked stright past them all into marks house where I was going to ring my mum so I could escape this arab festival. But it was to late , I was spotted by his mum. There was no chance of getting home now , she wouldn’t let me say no to staying for dinner.

I started to panic and sweat starting pouring from my face. We all sat down together to eat dinner. Marks mum piled enough to feed a family on my plate, but for a moment I thought I was going to be ok. Cause the food I was lookin at on my plate didn’t seem to bad .i felt so relieved started to feel really good. But I was wrong, one bite of the food and I almost threw up.i could feel sliver down my throat, and the after taste could make anyone throw their guts up

But I was strong , and kept it down as long as possibly could. However there were a few times when I felt I was going to explode. And the eyes of others around me started to suspect something and kept an close eye on my every move. The was only one way I was going to get through this. And that was to wash it down as much as possioble with cordial. And that I did, about litres of it to be exact. I must of refilled my glass about 1000 times.and really before I knew it , it was all over. and I definitely showed ppl that I was finished. I did the little push back thing away from the table to show that I was full. But marks mum took no notice what so ever of my hint that I was full, she rather decided to load my plate up again.

er asking me what I was doing sitting in his room by myself. I made up some excuse that I was looking for something I left there knowing that he would be offended if I told him I was hiding from his family.

This essay is actully about a tv show but since there was no Tv catagorys i decided to chose movies since there are 10 Star trek movies.

Star trek is my favourite show, because it shows an ideolistic view of the future, there are so many great characters and great shows.

The first series ever made is star trek, with captain kirk. This show lasted years before they canceled it which was a dumb move.

the enxt series was star trek the animated series which also had captain kirk in it and the crew of the starship enterprise.

Do my essay on why i like Star Trek CHEAP !

They made afew movies between star trek the animated series and the enxt star trek series, star trek the next generation with a brand new crew and new captain, the enterprise d was commanded by captain jean luc picard and that show lasted 7 years. Way more then the original series lasted. the next gen crew were in a total of 4 movies, first Conact being my favourite one because it had the borg, time travel and everything.

The next series was deep space nine featuring captain ben Sicko commanding the station orbiting a wormhole that lead to the beta quadrant. This lasted 7 seasons as well and i would love to see a movie staring the ds crew.

The enxt season was Voyager, which had the first female captain (but not the first female captain in starfleet as some people have said) and it was about a starship that was stranded in the delta quadrant. In the last episode they finally made it back home.

the next series was enterprise, made about one or two years after voyager so trkkies like myself had to wait a long time to see a new series and a new movie. It was set before the federation was formed and the enterprise was the first ship. captain John Archer was the first captain...I kinda feel that this series didnt respect teh shows creator oiginal view it completly rewrote star trek history as we know it but i like the fact that its set closer to modern times.

I watch star trek becxause its a great show and i love it.

In conclusion star trek rocks.

One of the leading furniture manufacturer/exporter in the country today is Union Square Enterprises. For 17 years, it has been producing fine quality furniture for markets here and abroad. With the big success of this furniture company, it came to me as a surprise when I realized that Union Square is owned and managed by one person, Mr. Jose Leo Caparas. Ever since was established, the owner decided to keep the company as sole proprietorship because he believed that having a partner/partners will only bring problems especially on the occasions when there are conflict in decision-making. Also, he opted to have less but efficient staff because he believed that having more staff in the office will further delay the work.

The main office of Union Square, unlike regular offices, is very organized and devoid of people walking back and forth. At first glance, one may think that there are many employees who are absent, but the truth is, six people are enough to do the administrative work in the office. I asked about the organizational structure of the company, Listed below are the hierarchy of the organization and their corresponding responsibilities.

General Manager

The general manager is the owner himself. He personally sees the over-all operation of the business and makes the final decision on all matters. He regularly checks the job done by all departments to make sure that all are done according to his instructions. Being a general manager does not mean having just office work. The general manager also regularly goes to the main plant to check the quality of the furniture produced by their company. The general manager sometimes also serves as the furniture designer.

Sales Department

This department is in-charge of all matters related to the sale of the products of Union Square. They are the one who develop marketing strategies to increase not only the profit but also the awareness of the consumers of the products of Union Square. Of course, these marketing strategies are employed with the approval of the general manager. Most of the staff in this department are designers. This is to aid the costumers in case that they need help in deciding the right furniture for them. All matters which concern the costumer and their needs (i.e. delivery) are also handled by this department. The staff in this department does not stay in the office but rather stays longer in the showrooms.

Finance Department

This department is responsible for handling the incoming and outgoing money

of the company. This department is also the one who budgets the expenses of the company and thinks of other ways of accumulating new profit. Again, they do this job in close coordination with the general manager. With the on going economic crisis of our country, this department has the most headache compared to other departments

Accounting Department

Obviously, this department is checks the flow of money in the business. This department makes sure that all expenses are accounted for and all profit goes directly to the company.

Legal Department

This department takes care of all legal agreements entered by the company. It makes sure that all contracts signed by the general manager are in line with the law and does not entail any form of fraud.

Production Department

In terms of number of employees, the production department is the biggest of all the departments with a total of 0 employees, distributed on the six major divisions of the department. This department cannot be found in the main office. They are mainly based on the furniture factory located in Pampanga. The production is the heart of the operation of the company; this is why great attention to all the details are given to make sure that all products have the highest quality. A production head is appointed to take care of the production of furniture. He has to give attention from the procurement of materials to the packaging of finished furniture. He is also the one responsible for monitoring the rate of production so that orders will be done on time so as not to delay the shipment of exported products. Aside from these responsibilities, He also has to monitor the quality of products produced by the 0 sub-contractors of Union Square in various regions in the country. Production is also responsible for upgrading the designs of furniture and furnishings. A group of designers are assigned to create new designs for the execution of a separate group of craftsmen. After which the new design is presented for the approval of the general manager. To help the production head, an assistant production head is appointed to keep an eye on the operations.

The Production is divided into six major parts. They are the Rattan Framing Division, Metal Framing Division, Weaving Division, Pre-Finishing Division, Finishing Division, and Final Quality Control. These groups are divided according to the work to be done so that after framing, the furniture is passed for weaving, pre-finishing, finishing, quality control, packaging and delivery. Through this system, work is much faster because the employees will able to master whatever they are doing because of repetition of work. Also, to ensure the quality of the product, the furniture passes thru a quality control in every division.

Please note that this sample paper on Union Square is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Should the Victorian Police allow a Muslim Woman to the police force?

In my opinion I think that Maha, becoming the country's first traditional Muslim policewoman, would be a great aspect of the Arabic community seeing that she would like working in multicultural affairs or domestic violence in their community. It's wonderful to see that the police force is giving her that opportunity to become a policewoman and to still dress in the Muslim tradition and that only slight changes are to be made.

Abdul Safir,

St Kilda, Melbourne.

I think that having a Muslim policewoman isn't such a bad idea but what I find very annoying is that she is allowed to wear the veil while on duty, and the only part of her body, which is allowed to be shown is her face. I mean if she wants to become a policewoman and wants to wear the Muslim traditional clothing, she should go back to where she came from.

I mean when an Australian goes to a Muslim country they have to be covered, and as far as I'm concerned Maha is living in Australia and she should not be allowed to wear the veil while she is on duty.

Joe Blo,

Westmeadows, Melbourne.

In my opinion I think that having a Muslim policewoman is totally out of the question. And not only that, but finding out that she to wants to have her head covered in the traditional "Hijab" and to pray at least once a shift is totally wrong. How could the Victorian police force accept her? I mean she can't even go to a pre-intake swimming test without it being cleared of recruits so she could take the test alone. I'm usually not a racist person but I think that this issue is really an important and wrong decision, which has been made.

Kelly Jordan,

Brunswick, Melbourne.

In my opinion I think that it is of great pleasure to see a Muslim working for the police force. I myself am not religious but one thing that I want to say to Maha is, do your best and you can become whatever you want to be, and I'm sure that the country is very happy and pleased with you. Good Job. And I'll be looking forward to seeing you around…lol.

Mal Colston,

Carlton, Melbourne.

Sir Walter Raleigh was an explorer, a politician, a historian, a soldier, a sailor, and a poet. He was born at Hayes, Devonshire in 155(Compton's Encyclopedia. 1). The year of his birth is somewhat in question. Some believe he was born in 1554(Poetry Criticism. 00). He entered Oriel College, Oxford in 1568, but te next year he left to join the Huguenot Army in France.

Sir Raleigh gained the recognition of Queen Elizabeth I after his heroic efforts in the suppression of the Irish rebellion in Cork. The story was that he won the Queens favor by throwing his expensive velvet cloak on a mud puddle and allowing the queen to walk on it so she did not get her shoes wet( Compton's Encyclopedia. 0).

Sir Raleigh was said to be a handsome and witty man, with country manners and imposing personality. He was a proud man. Queen Elizabeth granted him many favors during her reign. He always fulfilled his responsibilities in an excellent manner. His greatest claim to fame was his efforts to colonize the new world. His position at court gave him an opportunity to push this great project, but the queen would not permit him to lead any colonizing expeditions in person. To Sir Walter Raleigh the vision of a new England beyond the sea had an irresistible appeal.

Sir Walter Raleigh was tireless in his effort to settle English people in America. He sent out one expedition after another. The area explored by his expedition in 1584 was given the name Virginia in honor of the "virgin queen," as Queen Elizabeth was called. Three settlements were made on the island off North Carolina, but none survived. Sir Raleigh's work did pave the way for later settlements. His crew brought back tobacco and potatoes from the new world. He popularized smoking and created a demand for the tobacco leaf. This become a profitable crop in the colonies. He was in Ireland when he introduced the potato in 15(Compton's Encyclopedia. 1).

Write my Essay on SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Sir Walter Raleigh encountered the queens' anger when she discovered he had secretly married Queen Elizabeth's maid of honor(Agnes. 145). They both were immediately imprisoned in the Tower of London. Sir Raleigh's sense of lose and anger about this incident were expressed in his peon, "The Ocean to Cynthia." In less than a year the queen's need for Sir Raleigh's services to stop the Spanish piracy led to his release. He eventually regained his post as captain of the Guard, but the intimate royal access that he once enjoyed was never regained.

In 156, Sir Raleigh undertook an expedition to Guiana. Upon his return he published, "The Discovery of Guiana," an account of the wealth and potential of this area. This gave him broad acceptance among Elizabethan intellectuals. (www.bn.com. ).

Queen Elizabeth I died in 160 and King James I inherited the throne. King James did not trust Sir Walter Raleigh because of his role in the execution of Essex and because of their conflicting views toward Spain and Catholicism. Hostility between the two men led to a change of conspiracy against Sir Raleigh who was accused of plotting against the king. He was sentenced to death. King James later commented sentence to life in prison. He was sent to the Tower of London where he remained for the next thirteen years. Most of he time of his imprisonment his wife and son were allowed to live with him. He was visited by many great scholars and poets(Compton's Encyclopedia. )

during his imprisonment he became close friends with Prince Henry who was King James' son. For Prince Henry, Sir Walter Raleigh wrote the book, History of the World. The first volume, published in 1614, only went to 10 B.C. Prince Henry tried to persuade his father to free Sir Raleigh but was not successful. Prince Henry died in 1614(Reference Guide to English Literature. 111)

In 1616, Sir Raleigh persuaded King James to release him and lead an expedition to the Orinoco River and bring back some of the gold that he claimed to have discovered. The king agreed to release him but not to pardon him. The king ordered him not to engaged in combat with the Spaniards. When in Guiana, Sir Raleigh disobeyed the king and engaged in combat with the Spaniards Sir Raleigh's son was killed as were many men on both sides (Compton's Encyclopedia. 146) the expedition was a disaster. Not only did Sir Raleigh lose his son, disobeyed the king, but also failed to find the riches he had promised the king. During the expedition, Sir Raleigh contracted a tropical disease and almost attempted to flee to France, but was stopped and arrested. King James invoked the death sentence of 160(www.havard.com. 1) it was believed that the death sentence was invoked, primarily, to appease the Spanish(Compton's Encyclopedia. 146)

on October , 1618, Sir Walter Raleigh was executed by beheading. Before his execution, Sir Raleigh asked to see the axe and was supposed to have said,

"This is sharp medicine, but is it a physian for all diseases?"

His death took an air of martyrdom(Agnes. 146) he was cheerful to the end(Compton's Encyclopedia. )

I was a common practice, at that time, for the head of the executed to be embalmed and presented to the wife of the executed his wife is said to have carried his head with her until she died twenty-nine yeas later at the age of eighter- two. Upon her death the head was finally buried with the body of Sir Walter at St. Margaret's at Westminster(www.havard.com. 1)

Sir Walter Raleigh was, above all, valued as a man of action. His writings were almost always a by product of his life. He wrote because he felt he had something to say. Some critics believe that many of this writings were based on his imagination and that he distorted the truth(Agnes. 145). One example was "The Discovery of Guiana." the riches that he supposedly found never materialized. His poetry has survived only in stray pieces(Agnes. 146). It was often found in anthologies and common place book of the time. He jealously preserved his anonymity. He always worked to appear as a gentleman with "mind above money."

He adored Queen Elizabeth I. He addressed her personally and privately in a platonic manner. She inspired much of his writings, but these were not subjects for book stalls. In spite of Sir Walter Raleigh's flamboyant manner, critics often think of him as a private person. Many biographic have attempted to solve the ruddle of his personality and its enduring fascination(Agnes. 147).

Sir Walter Raleigh followed the Elizabethan courtly convention of privately circulations his poetry. Much of his verse was lost until four fragments of "The Ocean to Cynthia" were found in Lord Salisbury's library at Hatfield in 1870. This led scholars to believe that this had been a long epic poem in twenty-two parts, thought some scholars have doubted the existence of this work. "The Ocean to Cynthia" was addressed to Queen Elizabeth and reflects his standing in her favor at the time. Poetry was Sir Raleigh's method in a attempt to appease the queen after her discovery of his secret marriage. This poem was also an expression of frustration and anger at his imprisonment for having married Elizabeth Throckmorton(Poetry Criticism. 00).

Sir Walter Raleigh is best remembered for the following works of poetry"

"The Ocean to Cynthia" probably publish in 15.

"The Works of Sir Walter Raleigh" in eight volumes consisted of essays, letters, and poetry that was not published until 18.

"The Poems of Sir Walter Raleigh," published in 1.

Other major include an essay published in 151, entitled, "A report of the Truth of the Fight About the Iles of Scored, this Last Summer," Betwixt the Revenge, One of her Majesties Ships, And an Armada of the King of Spain." he published a travel essay in 156, entitled, "the Discovery of the Large, Rich, and Beautiful Empire of Guiana." Also in 156, he wrote another essay entitled "a Relation of Cadiz Action." This was not published until 168. In 160, he wrote an essay he called "Of A War with Spain and Our Protecting the Netherlands." during the years 160-1605, he wrote, "Sir Walter Raleigh's introduction to his Somme to Posterity." this was first published in 16.

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, one of his major works, was written while imprisoned in the Tower of London and completed in 1614. In 1615, he wrote an assay entitled, "The Prerogative of Parliaments in England." This essay was first published in 1700. "Sir Walter Raleigh's Sceptic" was an essay published in 1651. "Three Discoveries of Sir Walter Raleigh" was published in 170.

Much of Sir Walter Raleigh's work was written while he was in prison. Since much of his work was not published until years after his death it is quite possible that much of his writings have been lost and may never be found(Poetry Criticism. 00).

During Sir Walter Raleigh's thirteen year imprisonment in the Tower of London he wrote the first volume of "History of the World." It gave an account of the world's history, as he knew it, up to 10 B.C. this book was primarily, written for Prince Henry, son of King James. Prince Henry had become close friends with Sir Raleigh and had tried to talk his father into giving Sir Raleigh his Freedom(Compton's Encyclopedia. )

Raleigh's interest in religion, politics, geography and philosophy are all reflected in this great book. He was speculative in his wisdom and tried tp learn all he could from all he met(Agnes. 08). 1. Lathan, Agnes M. C., "Sir Walter Raleigh," British Writers, Mc Millan, Canada, Inc. 17.
