An X-ray tube, rotating around a specific area of the body, delivers an appropriate amount of X radiation for the tissue and takes pictures of that part of the internal anatomy from different angles. After the test, they are encouraged to allow someone else to drive them from the testing site, because patients have taken a tranquilizer, or they can return their routines. A radiologist will interpret each of the final three-dimensional images and then send them to the patient's cardiologist, who will go over the results with the patient at a follow-up appointment.

There are usually no side effects to this procedure. Allergic reactions to the dye usually occur immediately, but are unusual. Signs of an allergic reaction include swelling and difficulty breathing. Since the IV contrast is injected with a motor driven power injector and so extravasations from the vein may cause irritation in the skin. Also a risk of allergy to the iodinated contrast material resulting in hives, itching, wheezing, shock etc. Pretreatment with Benadryl and Prednisone usually eliminates reaction in allergic patients.
