The bottom line is that the blaxploitation movies of the 170' s showed a slanted view of how African Americans lived in the inner city; blaxploitation is a negative stereotype of African Americans. These movies were marketed at the African American genre with characters represented as pimps, prostitutes, murderers, gangsters, drug addicts and pushers preying on the inner city community. These movies used sex, violence and money as their main themes. But how did movies such as Shaft gross over 10 million in the first year? This is all Hollywood was able to offer the black actor…you want to work in this industry-you play a pimp or a sexy kung-fu chic. After speaking with those who witnessed this first hand….. We came to an interesting point The money to support these movies came mostly out of black pockets, these movies were show in the inner city and in many cases never came to the local suburban theatre. During the 70's my mother lived in a small town in central New York and the theatres simply did not have these movies available for her to see. Whereas in contrast to Nikita's mother who went to the theatre to see movies such as shaft and superfly…these theatres were packed…..this is all Hollywood was willing to put out at the time….that was all there was in the black film industry….and that's all they saw…The exploitation of the African American community was the 170's version of a minstrel show, the same negative stereotypes were provided and again if you wanted to work in Hollywood that's the only role you're gonna get. At this time it is difficult to see any true representations of real, everyday, African American life…. While actors like Bill Cosby were seen as token blacks they still did not give the black community what they needed….a true and honest depiction of real life. When little boys and girls go to the movies and all they have as a hero is a pimp or a womanizer where does this leave a community.

I had experienced on the project that gave me the opportunity to utilize and expand my interpersonal skill among my teammates and the users. My first project was to create a Statewide Call Centre Program using MS Access database to build an automated system to track phone call from senior citizen about their concerns health care. I was the project lead for this program; therefore, I was required to interact and communicate with the users and my teammates effectively and under deadlines. Before the project started, I established relationships between the users and my teammates one by one to determine how we could work together to make the program more efficient and user friendly. Once a week, I set up a meeting with my teammates to go over the problems and to facilitate solutions. To facilitate solving problems, I would speak to one team member at a time to seek suggestions and recommendations of how to identify and create individual solutions. Twice a month, I organized meetings with the users and my teammates to go over the requests and user's requirements to ensure development of the prototype continued to fulfill the business needs, requirements, and the users' expectations. At every meeting, I would prepare an agenda along with handouts to illustrate topics of discussion for the meeting. I also created a flowchart of the program progress and a ghatt chart to show our timelines of the project. I also set up one-on-one meetings periodically with my team members to seek for suggestions and possible solutions as to how we could resolve the any newly discovered problems. Every team member has a different and unique perspective of how the project would work pending certain solutions. I then only implemented a solution once the entire team has provided me with their expertise and I was able to analyze and choose the best solution. Therefore, I resolved the conflicts by dividing the project into several phases. Then I handled some of the phases and my team member handled others according to their expertise and the portions they preferred to work on for the project. I then took all the phases of the assignment and combined them together into an analyzed, tested, and implemented prototype program. I also wrote two pieces of documentations for this project. The first piece I wrote was basic system documentation, in order for a future technical team member to be able to understand and follow the prototype of the system. The second piece I wrote was a user manual for the current and future users to be able run and execute the automated system. As a project leader for this assignment, I was to be able to utilize my dedication, professionalism, and communicate effectively among my teammates and the users. I was also able to broaden my interpersonal skill by resolving conflicts as they arose while still delivering a newly developed system in a timely manner. Therefore, I became more confident of my interpersonal skills for my future careers.

There are so many problems in each individual society; however, they are more dominant in the western world. These problems continue to increase every decade, which brings the public's attention to it. An important, and serious issues that has been in the past, are now current American political, social and economic scenes today. Such issues are like child abuse, abortion, gun control, and drugs and much more are mostly social problems affecting the middle and poor classes.

One of today's principle focuses is of child welfare agencies. Child abuse is being disowned of love, tenderness, and compassion that are necessary qualities human beings require when they are born on this earth. The irony these days is putting more attention and focus on this problem but people achieved less to solve it. Furthermore, this topic has affected the legal justice system, blocking the rights of families and individuals. The public reaction to such horrors of child abuse, the public welfare changed from a system serving a wide range of disadvantaged children into a designed welfare mainly to protect children from beating. The challenge for child welfare in the next years must be to "deploy" its resources, morals economically and politically to encourage the welfare of all children.

Another issue that brings public attention is abortion. Many see that there is that "no right is more basic than the right to live." Sometimes though exceptions are considered. For instance, rape is the hardest denials of liberty, and forcing a woman to bear a rapist's child is an assault on her humanity. Just as abortion may seem

Unattempted, so does her pregnancy. "Whatever compromises we might achieve in our struggle with abortion, it should be clear by now that the debate itself…if we allow ourselves to listen closely to its arguments...many shed valuable light on many of the things we believe, and why." Women played an important and historical role by the movement that risen and came forth within an established political system to legalize abortion. The movement was an expanded social sector. A logical description of the American political scene seems obvious that the issue of legalized abortion can be viewed as an important factor of the Cultural War, where one side is pro-abortion and the others who are rather more traditional are anti-abortion. It's becoming a political conflict.

Further, gun control has been a recent dispute this decade. Gun-control implies restriction, those on opposite sides of the issue say that some individuals wish to see laws passed to make it more difficult to obtain guns; whereas, the other side may wish laws be passed to make it easier to obtain guns. Guns today have become a part of life to some, regardless whether it is for hunting or target shooting or killing or other means. People who oppose gun laws are often looked upon by the public eyes, as groups willing to endanger the public to enjoy their own desires, but the public in this sense are stereotypical. The problem is not the guns but the people who are reckless. If more guns were to be put in the hands of responsible adults, society would be a much safer environment for the people. It is expected that the gun-control debate will get the public

opinion every time an act of violence has occurred. If new laws are passed, they will be challenged in courts.

Lastly drug use, which has spread not only in the western states, but it's more of a global issue that most societies suffer from. Three branches of government have postponed the constitutional and nonconstitutional limits on exercising of governmental power in the field of drug enforcement. This is bad enough if the 'war on drug' had worked effectively to control the supply of illegal drugs. Many critics of the U.S. drug policy think that the 'wars of drug' is being lost. The reason is because of the number of Americans who are addicted are in the millions and still increasing. "The Federal funding for drug treatment is less than half of what is spent on law enforcement." Most Americans see that reducing drug abuse should still remain a national priority for its seriousness. The struggle to reexamine drug abuse as a health problem led to efforts to challenge the criteria of success to rate drug control policies.

In conclusion, most of these social problems mentioned have become a "normative feature of American life." It happens so often, it does not shock the public because they are familiar with such issues. The tone of each book reviewed was very contradictory; therefore, are many opposing views. There is no right or wrong, but it depends on how the public may justify an issue or scene in a society. Knowingly, with the current problems the American society faces it may go against the long-standing hopes and aspirations that make up the American dream. However, in every nation there

is a dream, and in every nation there are complications. The trick is to make as many dreams possible come true; the key is persistence.

Custom Essays on Pleasentville

The movie Pleasentville is about change and trying to accept it. The director uses both allusion and color to show this. Pleasentville discusses changes to society. It suggests that, over time, we have replaced pleasentness with knowledge. We dont know what is next but we prefer to change to stagnation. It is better to go forward then to go back.

While color is an obvious force in this movie, the use of allusion is just as effective. The main allusion in Pleasentville is the Garden of Eden. Just like in the Garden of Eden, Lovers Lane symbolizes what perfect should be like. Along with the vibrante colors, comes precise examples of what was in this fantasy lifestyle. Bud and Margaret play the roles of Adam and Eve perfectley. And just like the biblical reference, everything seems to change Lovers Lane with the picking of the red apple. Once bitten into, the loud rolling thunder above is symbolic to that of an angry God in both worlds. Sex, rain, worded books, and booming thunder all give the people of both Lovers Lane and Pleasentville a new perspective on their perfect lives.

Just as the red apple signalled a change to Pleasentvilles Garden of Eden, the introduction of color in Pleasentville symbolized a new phase in the communitys life. The use of color in the movie Pleasentville represents change; changes in human emotion, a change that is permanent. Color spread everywhere like a wild fire, from the red apple, to the red cherry and red rose. In black and white Pleasentville, emotions were cool, rather then hot. Everyone was pleasent. No strong emotions existed. But with the introduction of new emotions, new colors emerge. Out of the passion for Lovers Lane, every color of the rainbow begins to appear. Is this the only way color happens? No. Mary Sue gains color not by fullfilling the locals needs but with the knowledge from books. The father enlightens to color through sorrow and his new knowledge of love for his wife. One of the messages in the film is that change (represented by color) is good and necessary. Color in Pleasentville symbolizes the many changes that transform the people and the town itself from sterile, dead society, to an active dynamic world.

Whether you feel change is a good thing or not, it is everywhere and inevitable to our society. And even if youre for or against it, change catches up with you eventually. Thats what Pleasentvilleis about;change. This movie shows us how a secluded world must cope with an unnatural or outside force that is thrust upon them. By using the allusion of Adam and Eve to show their revolusionising world, and color for their wide range of emotion, the director protrays to us the ultimate society gone wrong. Yet in a sense it wasnt that it was wrong but different and completely unexpected. For most, this shock did them a great deal of good, by showing what life is really like if you extend beyond that perfect bubble of ignorance and innocence; a bright, imperfect new world.

Please note that this sample paper on Pleasentville is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. "My Fair Lady", originally from playwright Georges Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, was adapted by lyricist Alan Jay Lerner into the present day musical. It currently entertains audiences at Playhouse in the Park with music by composer Frederick Loewe. Daniel Pelzig provides instruction for numerous dance numbers as choreographer during the performance showing in Cincinnati. I was able to catch a performance of the play this past Saturday. "My Fair Lady" is a comical and light-hearted Cinderella story that has the audience hoping that the prince will finally discover his love for our heroine while going through a dynamic change himself.

The musical provided an interesting way of presenting the story with a skeleton cast present of only ten performers. Due to the fact, many actors in "My Fair Lady" were forced to reprise several different roles. Shakespearian themes are even revived in one scene where one male is dressed as a woman with make-up and all.

Henry Higgins, portrayed by Neal Benari, and Eliza Doolittle, played by Crista Moore, represent our two main characters. Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl from the wrong side of the track who is thrown into the world of Professor Henry Higgins. Henry as form of entertainment and as a bet, puts Eliza through rigorous refining lessons to prove to that he can make her a lady. As time goes by, the two form a connection with each other that forces each of our lead characters to reconsider their values.

Neal Benari's portrayal of Professor Higgins to me lacked brevity. It seemed during the performance I longed for an actor that was more dominant. Professeur Higgins character is extremely arrogant, Crista Moore's performance of Eliza Doolittle was outstanding. During the beginning scene of the play where she is a flower girl on the street and she speaks to the fellow cast, her British accent is impeccable. I enjoyed her rendition of " Wouldn't It Be Lovely" and almost had to hold myself back from singing along.

Analysis of Kate Chopin's Desiree's Baby & The Awakening

Both of Kate Chopin's works focus on the choices and pressures that both of the main characters endure throughout the stories. Both women were powerless against their male counterparts. Chopin delves deep into the personal thoughts and desires of her characters, especially married women.

Chopin investigates the social perceptions of women in the 1th Century. She challenged the chauvinistic views of society during the time period. Her stories were critically disapproved by the public.

Chopin's genre of writing focuses on naturalism. "The basic premise of naturalism is that the thoughts, emotions, and actions of men and women are determined by forces beyond their control nature, heredity, and social forces" (Barton & Hudson, 17, p. 117). A main theme in both works is the main characters becoming victims of faith.

In Desiree's Baby, Desiree is asked to take her child and leave her husband Armand. Armand no longer loves his wife, because their son is not white. As Desiree explains the situation to her mother in a letter, she is lost and confused. "My mother, they tell me I am not white. Armand told me I am not white" (Chopin 6). Without Desiree knowing, it is Armand who is the cause of her son being black.

From society's perception of what is deemed appropriate, Armand must get rid of his wife and child even though he is the cause of the problem. In a note, Armand's mother wrote that she never wanted her son to know that he was of African American heritage. "I thank the good God for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that … he belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery" (Chopin 68).

Both women are owned by their husbands and seen as property. In The Awakening, when Leonce discovers that his wife Edna was moving out of their family's house, he thought of how society would perceive him. "He [Leonce] was simply thinking of his financial integrity … It might do incalculable mischief to his business prospects" (Chopin 441). Mr. Pontellier's main concern is his social status. In Desiree's Baby, when Armand discovers that his child is black, he blames is wife and only cares about his family. "Moreover he [Armand] no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name" (Chopin 6).

In Chopin's two stories, both women are destined for death. Both wives cannot go on living in the male-dominated society that they live in. After being insulted and thrown out of her home, Desiree loses control and tries to defend herself from her husband's false allegations. "You must know it is not true. I shall die. I must die. I cannot be so unhappy, and live" (Chopin 67). Desiree has lost the only love of her life and cannot go on living and takes her son to the river and does not return.

In The Awakening, Edna wants to be unchained from her husband's name and wants to live in freedom and choose her own way of life. Robert, her lover in the story, asks Edna to leave her husband and be with him. Unfortunately, Edna knew that she would feel alone once again and be under another man's control. As a result, Edna drowns herself in the ocean. Both women look towards water to free themselves from their possessors.

After reading the two works and reading more background knowledge of Kate Chopin, I agree that both women were victims of faith. Many critics perceive the women as the only victims in the stories. I would like to challenge this point of view and look more deeply into the minds of the husbands, especially Leonce.

In Desiree's Baby, Armand fell deeply in love with Desiree the moment his eyes laid upon her. "The passion that awoke in him that day … swept along like an avalanche, or like a prairie fire, or like any thing that drives headlong over all obstacles" (Chopin 65). Marrying Desiree and having a child softened Leone. In the beginning, he did not care that Desiree was abandoned by her mother. He would was honored to give her his family name.

Armand, like his wife, is also a victim of faith. He loved his family and was eager to start a new life. Unfortunately, faith, along with societal pressures, caused him to get rid of his family in order to save face. In the beginning of the story, the reader sees hope and unconditional love ever-present in the Aubigny household. Faith destroys Armand's family and causes the death of Desiree and their child.

In The Awakening, Leonce deeply loved his wife even though she expressed little interest in him. "He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him …" (Chopin 7). Also, Edna showed little interest in her two children which upset her husband. "In short, Mrs. Pontellier was not a mother-woman" (Chopin 74). Other women in the story thought Leone was the greatest husband. Unfortunately, Edna did not agree and wanted her freedom to do what she wished and see other men.

What surprised me while reading The Awakening was how Edna idolized Adele Ratignolle. Adele was the typical housewife who loved her children and worshiped her husband. Edna listeners to her advice throughout the story and treats her with deep respect. Even knowing of her infidelities, Leonce still loved his wife. From the beginning, Edna did not love her husband. "Her marriage to Leonce Pontellier was purely an accident, in the respect resembling many other marriages which masquerade as the decrees of Fate" (Chopin 8). As a reader, I see Edna's selfishness and distaste for her entire family.

Her husband respected Edna's choices even though he wished otherwise. His wife interacted with other men and moved into her own house without his wishes. At the end of the novel, Edna only sees death as a way to free herself from her family and does not care that he is leaving her two children. Edna had once told Madame Rattignolle that she would never sacrifice herself for her children, or for any one" (Chopin 404).

Throughout the story, Edna vacillates back and forth in the feelings she expresses. She loves Robert, then she loves Alcee. She hates her life, but respects her husband. What mindset is Edna dealing with? "It sometimes entered Mr. Pontellier's mind to wonder if his wife were not growing a little unbalanced mentally" (Chopin 41).

In the end, Edna chooses to be free from any man's allegiance, either her husband or Robert, and drowns herself in the ocean. "… All sense of reality had gone out of her life; she had abandoned herself to Fate" (Chopin 450). She gives up on life and her family.

Edna did possess a caring husband, two healthy children, and the freedom to do whatever she wished. Chopin makes Edna look like a prisoner in her own home, controlled by her family and held to the highest standards from society. She does not use rational thinking and cares little to the consequences of her actions. Chopin's ending is predictable and shows how Edna is not a role model for women to look up to. She wanted her freedom at the consequence of her losing her family. Edna commits adultery with her lovers, disrespects her husband, and showed little interest in raising her children.

When presenting this story to my students to read, I will develop a lesson plan where the students chose to rewrite the ending to The Awakening. I will give the students the following choices

1. Edna can be with her lover (in any manner she wishes).

. Edna can be married (to a man of her choice).

. Edna can live alone.

The students will select one of the three choices and create their own ending. Then, as a group, each student will read their endings to the rest of the class. I will highlight that in # 1, Edna would once again become a man's possession. In # , Edna would still be in a "traditional marriage" no matter if she was with Robert or someone else. In # , Edna would be alone like Madame Reisz, which she did not want to be like. This lesson will allow the students to critically analyze the themes and issues that arise in the story. It will also serve as valuable assessment tool for me to know that my students understand the concepts and lessons from the readings.
