The Importance of Health

Our health is an important issue that many people take for granted. I believe staying healthy is hard work because it requires us to eat a well balance diet including exercising regularly. Eating a variety of food promotes good health, because no single food will supply all the nutrients our body needs. In the essay entitled "How I'll Become an American", Miklo Vamos explains how many Americans are concerned about their health. He also believes that the media influences our thoughts about issues concerning health that many times we do not even realize that we are hurting ourselves. In addition, many of these issues many have a positive or negative effect on our health depending on the individual believes and we could easily become addicted to these issues because we are influence by other people in our society on a whole.

I agree with Vamos that as Americans we tend to place great emphasis on our health. We tend to watch what we eat as we grow older, because we believe that eating healthy promotes a longer life. For example, in America everyday both the television and the newspaper show commercials regarding health issues. Watching our weight is of concern to many Americans because according to statistics majority of Americans are infact overweight. Many of them are encourage engaging in a special diet, while exercising regularly in an attempt to loosing the weight. However, the media can possess a positive or a negative effect on our health because we it will advise us that too much of a particular food is unhealthy for us, while the other can prevent us from developing certain illnesses. As Americans even though we might become confused about a particular issue, we are easily convince and imitated by what majority of people are doing even though it may not be the right choice. Negative consequences might conflict the issue because after following these specific rules we might still become overweight.

Secondly, I believe that the writer is very objective about many of the issues concerning weight and exercise. For example, he stated that "he will go jogging everyday until he is mugged twice and knocked down three times". I could relate this statement to real life experiences because I remember reading in the newspaper a couple months ago about a central park jogger who was raped and beaten sometime last year in lower Manhattan New York. Vamos seems to believe that despite many horrible experiences many Americans are still willing to risk their lives because exercising is a part of a regular daily routine of all Americans because if we do not it will affect us as we grow older and it is the key of promoting a longer lasting life.

After reading many of the examples in the essay "How I'll become an American I came to the conclusion that Americans are often criticize of the way they react in certain situation. For example, even though the news media are not always correct, but the way the topic is portrayed it convinces us that we are doing the right thing. The writer tries to persuade us in changing some of our ways because negative consequences could follow. For example, even though we might have no knowledge about the effects of certain food on our body, we try to follow what other people are doing without complaining because we are all Americans. I just hope that in the future we try to obtain the facts before adjusting to certain situation we are better prepared to deal with the consequences.

Stanley Kubricks Full Metal Jacket Using The Vietnam War To Expose Violence, Sexism And Racism Inherent To American Society

Stanley Kubricks Full Metal Jacket illustrates the manner by which violence, sexism and racism features so prominently in human nature, with particular emphasis upon American society. Following the thematic example that focuses upon similar filmatic images of the Vietnam War mentality, Kubrick provides a harsh realization of mans inhumanity toward his own species, with an underlying subplot that criticizes how various populations are perpetually unable to live harmoniously. Clearly, there is no question to the primary theme of power and control that runs through the movie; however, Kubrick also makes a strong social statement that outwardly ridicules the extent to which human nature has sunk as a rational, civilized species.

The Things They Carried

. A telling look at a book that encompasses a world both real and imagined. The Vietnam War, however, is an event that had vivid imagery that lends itself well to OBriens work.

The Things They Carried A Work Of Fiction Baggage

Norman Bowker did what any other red-blooded American did when called to duty during one of the most politically volatile periods of United States history he served for his country. As author Tim OBrien recounts the trauma he faces once returning home from war in The Things They Carried A Work of Fiction, the reader gains a significantly better perspective as to the strain of baggage homeward bound soldiers were compelled to uphold amidst a society that was no longer familiar, no longer theirs.

OBriens style of writing mirrors the fractured way that his protagonist thinks due the trauma of war.

The Things They Carried develop from boys into aged men.

Tim OBrien uses the structure of this novel to blur the lines between fiction and reality. The writer argues that the structure shows how the narrator jumps from one topic to the next in an effort to circumnavigate traumatic, painful memories that are literally more then the mind can bear

The Things They Carried, uses structure to illustrate the evolution of the protagonist Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, as well as to develop two major themes, reality vs. fantasy and leadership.

The Things They Carried

Nickolas Kreger Kreger 1 Mr. Wakoson English II 1 September 000 ATTENTION TO DETAIL The things they carried, is a fictional story of a group of soldiers in the Vietnam War. The story is so realistic that one might forget that it is fiction. This fictional story seems real because of the attention to detail in what the people carried, what they thought, and how they spoke. Tim OBrien was in the Vietnam War and used his knowledge of a soldiers equipment, Army acronyms and short hand for these when listing the many burdens of the soldiers. His attention to detail is remarkable. In the second paragraph he even gave the history of several hotel-sized bars of soap that hed stolen on R&R in Sydney, Australia. (OBrien 78) He also lists the weights of most of the items carried by the men such as the PRC-5 radio, a killer at 6 pounds. (OBrien 7) OBrien also lists the soldiers personal effects and the reasons why they carried them. The adversity and originality of their belongings helps to establish their personality and to make them seem like real people. Kiowa, a devout Baptist carried an illustrated New Testament that had been presented to him by his father, who taught Sunday school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. (OBrien 78) These physical objects help to add very realistic detail to the story Kreger Another thing that contributed to the sense of reality are how the thoughts and attitudes of the soldiers are revealed in the process of telling the story. Lieutenant Jimmy Cross is one of the most realistic characters because much of what he thought is written down. We know of the his love for Martha and some of the odd things he did to express his love for her such as how he would sometimes taste the envelope flaps knowing her tongue had been there. (OBrien 78) and he would imagine romantic camping trips, and walks along the beach with her. These details made him seem like a real person with real feelings and problems. The soldiers attitudes and beliefs were also worked into the storyline. As a hedge against bad times, however, Kiowa carried his grandmothers distrust of the white man, his grandfathers hunting hatchet. (OBrien 78) The soldiers speech also helps to cement the story into reality, simply by its vulgarity and indifference. Throughout the story the soldiers use obscene and odd language to describe things. Kiowa describes Ted Lavenders death by saying the poor bastard just flat-censored fell. Boom. Down. Nothing Else. (OBrien 80) Their attempts at humor also helped to make it seem more real to life. Kiowa also related Ted Lavenders death to someone by saying A pisser, you know? Still zipping himself up. Zapped while zipping.. (OBrien 84) OBrien also used words that were mainly used only in that time period such as wiggy (86), Im goofed (87) and Roger-dodger (86). The soldiers in that time period did talk like that and used that lingo, which contributes to the authenticity of the story. Someone who was reading this story for the first time or even the second or third time, who was not aware that this is fiction would be hard pressed to tell whether Kreger that story is fiction or non-fiction, because of Tim OBriens attention to detail in describing the burdens, thoughts, and speech of the characters in the story.

All the lectures my parents gave me over the years about '"Not giving up", "Set your sights high", "Pursue your dreams", suddenly became a reality as I turned left on the Sunset Strip heading toward West Hollywood. There it was, larger than life, high above the Whiskey-A-Go-Go, glowing in all its neon glory, "SOLD OUT, AMPERSAND". "That's me", I said to my friend, "I can't believe this is really happening!"

I pause a minute before entering the room and my life flashes before me. I have been preparing for this moment my entire life. I open the door and make my way to the stage. I slip on my guitar and give the sound engineer the signal. The lights dim as I play my first note, the crowd roars as we begin to play. People Ive never seen before are singing the lyrics to my songs. The louder the crowd becomes the better I play. All the preparation for the next sixty minutes we stand on that stage pays off. Holding on the phone with club managers for twenty minutes means nothing to me, passing out flyers and making sure our merchandise arrives on time has no significance. Spending hours and hours in the recording studio now seems like the best investment I've ever made. This is it, my dream come true.

I guess I'm more fortunate than most people my age in knowing exactly what I want to do with my life. In fact, I've known since my very first guitar lesson in second grade. Being around music since I was a child has taught me to love everything dealing with music. Being in a band since the fourth grade has given me the opportunity to see the business side music. Writing, producing and performing my own original music has taught me so much about commitment, planning and managing people with all types of personalities. Also the economics of managing a successful band and the harsh realities of paying for studio time and producing a CD has exposed me to the business side of the music business.

My lifelong dream of a career in the music industry is now on the verge of becoming a reality as I prepare for formal business training as a music industry major. The experience at the Whiskey that night only served to solidify my commitment to what my parents had always impressed upon me "Not giving up", "Set your sights high", "Pursue your dreams".

Life for African Americans during the 10¡¦s and 10¡¦s was very hard.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on adrian rizzo is crazy

There were crop failures; economical suffering and reconstructing not going

to plan activated a great migration of blacks from the South to Northern cities.

The African Americans arrived in cities already overflowing with millions of

European immigrants. They developed a very urban lifestyle and culture.

There was a lot of racism and an oversupply of labor market kept many

African Americans from getting the better life they deserved. Many African

Americans within this community discussed gaining political, economic and

social equal ness with whites. African American churches offered their

members a lot more than a place to worship. They provided spiritual and

Community support for whatever was going on. The church was where

African Americans could feel safe and wanted.

Although, lynching also took place in these times, lynching was a practice very

scarily too common. It was often together with race relations after the end of

the Civil War and slavery destruction. Lynching is where a mob breaks into a

prison and gets the person they want, throw a rope over a tree and pulls it to

hang the person. These are people who have brought it upon themselves to

Kill someone. The whites used lynching as a form of terror to scare the

African American population. Some Americans wrote in favor about the

Practice of lynching. Lynching had a history much deeper then people

Thought. Here are dates and numbers of how many people got lynched in

These are just some of the years lynching took place. All together it took

Place from 188 to 160. It was common in places with high black

Population, the area where whites felt more threatened by more numbers of

Blacks then white especially the blacks they did not know.

Also during this time period the 1th amendment took effect on August 18,

10 and women in America also got the right vote. The first Anti Lynching

Bill was blocked in 11 but passed the house in 1 and was defeated in

The Senate on January 6, 1.

The whites were scared that the black people would be smarter then them,

That they would take away their women and children and that they would be

Better businessman. Therefore they felt threatened and had a lot of pressure,

So the only way they could feel better was by bringing in laws against African

Americans or by hurting them.

Part b

Dear diary, Saturday, April 4th , 16

Today was the best! I had so much fun. I love going to work with mum, I¡¦m

so lucky I get to go everyday. She works at Sir James and Madam Jane¡¦s

place, she¡¦s a cook and helps look after the three girls, Miss Laura, she¡¦s

eleven, Miss Sarah, she¡¦s eight and finally Miss Stefanie, she¡¦s my age, six and

my bestest friend in the whole wide world. I love playing with Sir James and

Madam¡¦s girls, they make everything so fun! Except, the only thing is they¡¦re

white, this makes it hard for me to play with them because their father, Sir

James doesn¡¦t approve. I don¡¦t know why though, I¡¦ve never really

understood what mama meant when she said ¡§make sure you hide form Sir

James when your playing with the girls won¡¦t you?, he doesn¡¦t like it when his

girls play, it will make him angry and you don¡¦t want that to happen now do

you?¡¨ This makes me sad and means that I have to hide from him whenever

we go and play, I have to pretend I¡¦m helping my mum with her work.

Today we went on an adventure around the yard while Sir was at work. This

was the best adventure ever! We pretended that we were going into town, to

buy the goods we needed, we got to get all dressed up, as if we were going to

church and Sir didn¡¦t care that I traveled with him, his family and my mum,

all colours traveling together. We were all talking and laughing about anything

and everything that popped into our heads. The trip didn¡¦t take too long,

because as they say, time fly¡¦s when your having fun. We reached town and

jumped off the carriage we skipped along the road and got to the shop, it was

full of people, but not just white, everyone knew each other and said good day

as they walked past. We got everything we needed and begged Sir to let us

have an ice cream from the shop, I had never gotten ice cream before because

ice creams were soooo expensive and black children weren¡¦t allowed to have

them, we begged him as much as we could and he eventually gave in, I

decided to try chocolate because that¡¦s what Miss Stefanie had, it was her

favourite and I liked everything she did, so I gave it a try. It tasted like nothing

I had ever had before, so rich, but not too rich it was still edible and tasted

absolutely positively yummy! I wish I could have them more often but I can¡¦t.

Suddenly, before we knew it Madam Jane was calling me saying ¡§Cal, Cal

come quick, he¡¦s coming; he¡¦s coming, go inside and help your mama!¡¨ So

this stopped all our fun and meant that I had to go and work with mama,

which wasn¡¦t so bad I suppose because I got to tell her about all my

adventures of the day, she was so excited and loved it when I was happy and

played with all the girls, she said It was a good bonding experience for me and

that we were the future generation or something, I don¡¦t really know what

she¡¦s talking about, but anything mama says she says it for a reason. So I gave

her a big hug. I¡¦m gonna go to bed now, goodnight, speak to you tomorrow.

Love Cal xox

P.S I hope I have another good day tomorrow!

Dear Diary, Sunday, April 5th, 16

Today was alright, we didn¡¦t do much. It was Sunday so mama and I went to

our church, the nigger church as they said. It was a massive congregation of

people, black people only as the whites did not think that attending church

with us was healthy. They were too good for us apparently, I don¡¦t know why,

because they don¡¦t even know us, and I¡¦m sure that if we got to go to school

like the white children we would be just as smart if not smarter, but no, this

isn¡¦t what they wanted. That was alright because the children at church were

so nice, they were just like me, mama said, I was better off then a lot of them

because madam let me play with her children, this was a happy thought except

I felt sorry for the other children some were not very well off, they lived in a

shelter that was falling apart and their Masters didn¡¦t treat them very well,

made them do all the dirty work, and blamed them for absolutely everything.

One of my friends, maisy, she¡¦s only five, was telling me that her master was

extremely evil, once she ran inside because she got cut by a thorn bush in the

garden and was bleeding and accidentally came in with her shoes on and Sir

Jem, got really mad at her and banished her to her room for whole days!

She didn¡¦t get fed very much, less then usual, her mama tried o sneak food to

her, she said she cried all night long. I felt so sorry for her and didn¡¦t know

what to do. Church was really good we got to sing our hymns and listen to the

reverend. This was so relaxing and peaceful, I loved church, and so did

mama, because this is where she got to pray for papa. She closed her eyes as

if she was having memories of when he was around, it was so nice to see her

happy. Well I¡¦m off mama says I need my rest, I¡¦ve had two very big days in a

row and tomorrow we have a lot of work to do. Goodnight.

Love Cal xox

Dear Diary, Monday, April 6th , 16

Well today wasn¡¦t as much fun as the last two days, because sir stayed home

from work, he said he had to do something at home, I don¡¦t know what. This

meant it was extra hard to get to all the girls and play. I felt as if he had his

eyes on me all the time, I was scared of him, he made me feel so

uncomfortable and made me cry when he yelled or got angry, which was a lot

of the time. The post came; I went out to get it, which was just one of my

duties. There was a letter in there addressed to mama, I took all the post to

Sir James he looked through it and called my mother into his study, that¡¦s

where he did his work while at home. They talked for a while; mama opened

the letter there that¡¦s what she had to do. Then she came out, her eyes were

all red and she looked like she had been crying I ran to her and asked what

was wrong. She took me to our room and told me that¡¦s something terrible

had happened to Maisy and her family, something cruel that happened to a

lot of black people, she had died. Mama said something about lynching?

That it was cruel and should never be allowed to happen, as usual I didn¡¦t

know what lynching was, but I didn¡¦t ask mama was to upset so I figured it

would have been something bad. So I left it at that. Mama needs me so I

have to go I¡¦ll write back a bit later maybe tomorrow not sure what I have to

do for the rest of the day now. Goodbye.

Love Cal xox

Dear Diary, Monday, April 6th , 16

Sorry I had to go so quickly before. Maisy¡¦s dead! It has only just hit me; I

have been crying for a few hours non stop, mama said I was in shock before.

I don¡¦t know but all I know now is that one of my best friends in the whole

world was dead! What was I supposed to do when I went to church or if I

wanted to play with someone and Sir was home. I would have no one, sure

there were the other black kids but it was different, none of them understood

me like Maisy did, we had a special connection that could never be broken

until now. The girls tried to come to see me because I was upset, Madam said

they could except most of the times they got close Sir James would stop and

yell at them, saying to get away from her, she¡¦s black don¡¦t you understand

you are not to go near her, she¡¦s different to you. Go back and play in the

yard or help your mother! I¡¦ve never heard someone say the same thing so

many times in one day like Sir did, he was very stubborn. Every now and then

Madam Jane would try and speak to him but he knocked some sense into her,

well that¡¦s how he felt anyway. Well I don¡¦t really feel like talking much

today, sorry! I¡¦ll speak to you later not sure when, maybe when I feel a bit

more up to it. Goodnight.

Love Cal xox

Dear Diary, Thursday, April th , 16

I am sorry I haven¡¦t spoken to you in a while, haven¡¦t really felt up to it, been

a bit sad from Maisy¡¦s death and all. I am finally starting to feel a bit better

now. I am playing with the girls during the day to get my mind off things, it

helps when we go on our adventures I feel like I am in a whole new world

where nothing can hurt me, I am so safe and everyone is equal. I love being

black, but it is so unfair, why can¡¦t people just treat us the same, we are only

human beings. When I am older I am going to try and make a difference in

this world, I will have all my friends to back me up. Then maybe blacks could

go to school? Have an education and maybe even one day a special someone

could help rule the country? You never know, after all I am the future

generation. I asked Madam Jane to explain a few things to me so that I can

understand what everyone else does about what is going on. She even

promised that she would teach me all she knew, without Sir finding out, that

she would try her best to give me a good life, her and mama together, this

makes me happy I just hope that someday there will be more people like

Madam, mama, Laura, Sarah and Stefanie. Goodbye for now. Speak really

soon. Sweet dreams.

Love always Cal xox

Is mathematical knowledge certain knowledge? Does it apply to all knowledge areas?

If the universe is mathematically ordered, this would explain the utility of mathematics but not how mathematical knowledge is acquired. Mathematics expresses the principles of this order and gives insight into it. The path to mathematical knowledge is linked to its utility, through the idea that the senses reveal to us only the changing phenomenal world of sense experiences. Mathematics is universal and constant, so to garner knowledge about principles underlying the order of the world in which we live we have to turn from sense experience and recognize the ability of the intellect to understand the ordered nature of the universe. Mathematics is perhaps the study in which there seems to appear a strong use of the word "knowledge," because information must be certain, or very close to certain, before it can be known. For this reason, it requires a stronger degree of justification then other areas of knowledge. This all stems from the belief that mathematics is the only truly constant area of knowledge; mathematical principles remain the same in all situations, with few exceptions. In formalism, mathematics is nothing more than a game, employing the manipulation of symbols that represent nothing. Formalists hence believe that mathematics conveys no certain knowledge, and is nothing but the organization of symbols. Constructivism, an opposing view, represents the idea that mathematical knowledge can be acquired by mental processes. Math therefore exists solely in the mind of the mathematician and is indubitably true. This view, consequently, does not take into consideration the application of mathematics in the "real" world, and the ability for people to simultaneously recognize mathematical patterns in nature. Depending on which view one holds, mathematical knowledge can be viewed as both certain and uncertain. Many of the areas of knowledge rely on logical analysis to make knowledge claims. Mathematics also follows suit. It is the repeating accuracy of mathematical knowledge claims that allows us to place mathematics on a immutable pedestal of unerring knowledge. And because the world is ordered around this mathematical knowledge, it can be applied in all of the areas of knowledge (aside from the hard sciences such as chemistry); however, the claims become less specific and more encompassing. The mathematics associated with sociology, psychology, and economics is much less exact. Human behavior encompasses such a wide spectrum of activity that it would take an immense effort to quantify all possible behaviors. At present, one can only paint in broad terms simple relationships that appear to exist between mathematics and human behavior. Still, there are some tangible relationships that can be established.

In 1840, the Fords migrated to the United States from Ireland during the potato famine. Henry had a limited education, disliked farming, but was handy with his parents' farm machinery. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1888, he married Clara Jane Bryant. In the early years, Ford supported his family by running a sawmill. Henry had one son, Edsel Ford, born November 6, 18. Edsel was president of Ford Motor Company from 11 until his death in 14. At that time Henry, age 80, took over the company again as president. In 145, Edsel Ford's eldest son, Henry Ford II, took over as president of the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford, the father of the automobile, died in Dearborn, Michigan, April 7, 147. He was 8 years old.

At age 16, Henry Ford walked from his family farm eight miles to Detroit and got a job at Detroit Edison as a machinist's apprentice. The discipline he learned as an apprentice directed his amazing life. Within a few years, he advanced to chief engineer of Detroit Edison Company. In 18, Ford built his first gasoline engine and later in 186 his first automobile, called the Quadricycle Runabout. It had a 4 horsepower engine and could accelerate to 0mph. He sold the Quadricycle Runabout for $00 to finance his second car, which was completed in 188. In 18, Ford left Detroit Edison to help run Detroit Automobile Company. Cars at this company were built one at a time. Ford studied other company ideas, such as Eli Whitney's, who made guns with standardized parts, and George Eastman's assembly line photo processing. Ford brought these ideas to his partners at Detroit Automobile Company and was labeled as "nutty." Ford quit Detroit Automobile Company and began to build racing cars. His racing cars were good enough to attract financial backers and partners. In 10, he set up Ford Motor Company with himself as vice-president and chief engineer. This was after two unsuccessful attempts to establish his company. The infant company produced only a few cars a day at the Ford factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit. Groups of two or three men worked on each car from components made to order by other companies. The company produced over 1,700 cars the first year. It took an additional five years to convince his partners that mass production was the answer to providing cars for the average worker. The model T was introduced in 108, but it was not until 11 that Ford adapted the first moving assembly line. With the advent of the assembly line, Ford Motor had a monthly labor turnover rate of 40 to 60 percent because of the monotony of assembly line work and increased demands of production quotas. In 114, Ford announced a plan for profit sharing and $5.00 a day minimum wage for his workers--double the going wage. This ensured the best and most loyal workers in the business. By giving his workers a real living wage and mass-producing the Model T, almost any man could own a car. During the Model T era, Ford bought out his partners and shareholders and became sole owner of Ford Motor Company. By 118, half of all cars in America were Model Ts. By 17, 15 million model T's had been sold, which was half of the world's output. During World War I and World War II, Ford converted his plants to war production. The company began construction of the worlds largest industrial complex along the banks of the Rouge River in Dearborn, Michigan, during the late 110's and early 10's. The massive Rouge Plant included all the elements needed for automobile production a steel mill, glass factory, and automobile assembly line. Iron ore and coal were brought in on Great Lakes steamers and by railroad and were used to produce both iron and steel. Rolling mills, forges, and assembly shops transformed the steel into springs, axles, and car bodies. Foundries converted iron into engine blocks and cylinder heads that were assembled with other components into engines. By 17, all steps in the manufacturing process, from refining raw materials to final assembly of the automobile, took place at the vast Rouge Plant, characterizing Henry Fords idea of mass production.

Custom Essays on Henry Ford - Genius

Henry Ford not only perfected the standardized interchangeable parts and assembly line techniques for auto manufacturing, he also invented the dealer-franchise system to sell and service cars. He knew that in order to sell millions of cars he had to have a local distribution system. By 11, there were 7,000 Ford dealers across the country. Ford also knew that his cars needed to be fueled, so he pushed for gas stations everywhere. Henry Ford also campaigned for better roads, which eventually led to interstate-highways that are still the envy of the world. He was chiefly responsible for the consequent expansion of American industry and the raising of the American standard of living.

Henry Ford was also interested in politics and as a powerful business leader asserted some influence on the political scene. After World War I ended, Ford ran for the Senate as a Democrat. He lost, but he remained vocal in politics. He violently opposed unions and fought against the United Auto Workers, which were trying to unionize his plants. Ford was also critical of Jews, and during World War II he gained a reputation as an anti-Semite. Fords personal opinions were sometimes controversial, especially his attacks on the Jewish community and pre-war support of Adolph Hitler. After Fords death, much of his fortune was used to create the philanthropic Ford Foundation.

Foreword

This was an exciting and mind-opening research project, and I really learned a lot from it. While difficult to choose what to say, and more importantly how to say it, I found the web site gametheory.net, which had a ton of information and where I got most of my information. I will be using quite a lot of passages from this site however, as it is worded better then I ever could. These passages will be following by parenthetical references that site exactly where I got them. I don't know if this is necessary for a math research paper, but it is how the AP style book requires it, so that is how I will be doing it.

Game Theory

Game theory is an awesome yet distinctively hard to explain method of mathematics that has been used for thousands of years but has only recently come to our attention as a great type of math to use when approaching decisions that are otherwise impossible to reach. The actual first well-know and publicized book was written by John Von Neumann, who was a great mathematician, and known for the founding of the theory, named The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. He wrote this in collaboration with another great mathematician who was also an economist by the now well-known name of Oskar Morgenstern in 144.

How to describe game theory? It is very hard to describe it, so the following is the best explanation I can give. Game theory is a distinct and interdisciplinary approach to the study of human behavior. The disciplines most involved in game theory are mathematics, economics and the other social and behavioral sciences. (Strategy and Conflict An Introductory Sketch of Game Theory. Taken on March 1th, 00. http//william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco /game/game.html)

Now the theory of games in no one theory at all, but many, now in game theory, like in regular games, there are players, always more then one, and these players must make decisions that will affect the outcome, whether it is a reward or punishment. With just two people involved in the game, it is rather simple to predict the outcome, the more players get included, the more complex the game grows, and it becomes almost impossible to give answers to the questions that the game is imposing. These questions generally are, how should the players behave? And what should the ultimate outcome of the game? To answer these questions of course, is the solution of the game. So there we have the basic outline of what game theorists have to play around with.

Game theory is not only related to war and games, it is also linked largely to economics. This shouldn't be so surprising since one of the original theorists mentioned above was one of the leading economists of his time. People ask how math is related to our economy. This is tricky, as there are several problems that make it difficult to put many economic problems in game farm. Firstly, it is hard to specify precisely the strategy that is supposed to be made available to the players, and the resolutions of the final problem is obviously debatable, as what one player might consider good and well, the other player or players might consider unfair. Better put 'these are among the circumstances that the person takes into account in maximizing rewards. The implication of property rights, a money economy and ideally competitive markets is that the individual needs not consider her or his interactions with other individuals. She or he needs consider only his or her own situation and the conditions of the market. But this leads to two problems. First, it limits the range of the theory. Where-ever competition is restricted (but there is no monopoly), or property rights are not fully defined, consensus neoclassical economic theory is inapplicable, and neoclassical economics has never produced a generally accepted extension of the theory to cover these cases. Decisions taken outside the money economy were also problematic for neoclassical economics.' (Strategy and Conflict An Introductory Sketch of Game Theory. Now an interesting fact we all know that logic is the foundation of mathematics, and game theory has been proved useful in highly technical areas, of which logic is one of the chief ones. Another technical area to which game theory can be applied is in differential games, which have applications in control and optimization. This includes games of pursuit and evasion, warfare, and can even spread as far as profit maximization. A lot of military leaders and historical figures have applied this. In my presentation I will be including such examples as when Cortez landed in Mexico, he only had a small force with him, but he burned his ships after he landed. This was used for multiple reasons, one, his soldiers now knew that they had no way of going home, so they had better win the fight or they would all die, , the Aztecs saw the ships being burnt so they figured that the Spaniards had some kind of reason and must be invincible, so they fled to the hills and Cortez took over without a fight. Another example is in the Novel Henry V, the Count of Agincourt kills the French prisoners in full view of the enemy. This allows his men to see that the enemy sees that their men have been killed therefore if they do not win the battle and are taken prisoner they will most likely be killed as well, this makes them want to fight better and win the war. This also allows the enemy to know that their opponents know that if they are taken prisoner they will be killed, so they know that they are going to fight even harder, therefore their resolve might weaken. At the same time however, they are enraged that their fellow countrymen have been killed so they will fight harder as well to avenge the deaths of their friends. And this cycle goes round and round. It is a classic example of the mirror within the mirror; it goes on and on and on.

While doing a search on game theory I came across an interesting article in Fortune magazine, in it John McDonald described the results of a one and a half year study of the way top executives in large companies make decisions. In his report he described game theory as "…uniquely qualified to make sense of the forces of work and how it related to the strategies of some actual corporations caught up in conglomerate warfare". He went on to talk about airline competition, plant location, and product diversification as fertile area for the use of game theory.

Now while there are many different applications of game theory, such as one-person games, two person games, the utility theory, the n-person game etc. What most people deal with, and what we have been talking about so far and will continue to talk about is the Two-Person, Zero-Sum Games of Perfect Information, or in layman's terms, a game that involves two people, parties, or corporations etc.

When dealing with two or more parties, the main element that makes it a game is the amount of information available to the players, and these complicate matters considerably. The final outcome of a game depends on the actions of both players, while trying to think in advance of what your opponent will do in case of your move. 'If I do this, will my opponent do this or that, or if I do that move will my opponent do that or this', these are the classic questions that come up when applying this theory. For example the stone-paper-scissors game, in this game the players much choose their strategies simultaneously, neither knowing what the other is going to do. Now if you know what your opponent is going to do, then the answer is simple, but that would be a case of a one person game. In this game one would try to create a theory of what his opponent will do based on what he has done previously, and what he is going to do based upon the moves of his opponent. This information is of course kept in his head, as well as the possible outcomes, and the circle once again goes round and round, and we are back to the mirror in the mirror.

On this topic, in Von Neumann and Morgenstern's book, they put the problem this way "Let us imagine that there exists a complete theory of the zero-sum two-person game which tells a player what to do and which is absolutely convincing. If the players knew such a theory then each player would have to assume that his strategy has been 'found out' by his opponent. The opponent knows the theory, and he knows that a player would be unwise not to follow it. Thus the hypothesis of the existence of a satisfactory theory legitimatize our investigation of the situation when a player's strategy is 'found out by his opponent. (The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior John Von Neumann, and Oskar Morgenstern in 144.)

Now we come to the paradox of this as well, if we are successful in constructing a theory of stone-paper-scissors that indicates which of the three strategies is best, an intelligent opponent with access to all the information can use the same logic and deduce our strategy. He then second guesses and wins, so if the original player uses the 'best' strategy it would end up being fatal, however if the first player knows that the second player knows the theory and the first player knows that the second player knows that the first player knows that he knows, then he is back to the beginning of the paradox. Once again we are back with the mirrors.

This is where the mathematical equations come into effect and help us to figure out what needs to be done to ensure us of our victory. I am not going to get into all of that here, as it is too hard to explain and will take too long. However, when I give my presentation I will be showing some different mathematical equations that show how this theory works and I will be talking about it then.

Another theory we must look at that is closely related to game theory is the Nash Equilibrium, where each player's strategy is optimal given the strategies of the other players. Yes this is confusing, in better terms If there is a set of strategies with the property that no player can benefit by changing her strategy while the other players keep their strategies unchanged, then that set of strategies and the corresponding payoffs constitute the Nash Equilibrium. (William-king.www.drexel.edu. Taken on March 1th, 00 http//william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco/game/nash.html).

It actually is not that major of an issue while trying to explain game theory, and it can lead to more confusion, so that is all I will be talking about on the Nash Equilibrium theory.

In Summary

In constructing a theory of a or more person's game, the game theorist has a choice, he can focus on one aspect of the game and disregard others, or he can try to capture all the relevant features of the game in a single model. Yet in either of these choices he/she still will end up paying a price.

If player/players one chooses the first course, and assumed that they were dealing with other competitive players who could communicate and have simultaneous and instantaneous access to each other, then this theory is convincing and may be used to predict what the range of punishment or reward will be.

Game theory describes the situations involving conflict in which the payoff is effected by the actions and counter-actions of intelligent opponents. (Introduction to Game Theory with Applications. Taken on March 1th, 00. http//ubmail.ubalt.edu/~harsham/opre640a/partVI.htm#rintrodecisionanaly).

It has been our intention to make this report as clear as precise as possible, to do this we have dappled in or discussed application that are excessively technical. Not only would it take too long, but also it is difficult for us to understand as well, to do this we would have to mention applications that have been made to international trade, the use of national resources, collective bargaining. These are way too in depth and detailed and would take several hundred pages and months of studying.

However, hopefully my readers have some idea of game theory after reading this, and some idea of what the problems are and what to do about them.
