Henry Ford ~ Genius

Henry Ford changed the world with his inventive genius. He put the industrial revolution in high gear. He was a family man, industrialist, inventor, and politician.

Henry Ford was born on a farm near Greenfield, Michigan, on July 0, 186. Henry was the eldest of six children born to William and Mary Ford. In 1840, the Fords migrated to the United States from Ireland during the potato famine. Henry had a limited education, disliked farming, but was handy with his parents' farm machinery. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse. In 1888, he married Clara Jane Bryant. In the early years, Ford supported his family by running a sawmill. Henry had one son, Edsel Ford, born November 6, 18. Edsel was president of Ford Motor Company from 11 until his death in 14. At that time Henry, age 80, took over the company again as president. In 145, Edsel Ford's eldest son, Henry Ford II, took over as president of the Ford Motor Company. Henry Ford, the father of the automobile, died in Dearborn, Michigan, April 7, 147. He was 8 years old.

At age 16, Henry Ford walked from his family farm eight miles to Detroit and got a job at Detroit Edison as a machinist's apprentice. The discipline he learned as an apprentice directed his amazing life. Within a few years, he advanced to chief engineer of Detroit Edison Company. In 18, Ford built his first gasoline engine and later in 186 his first automobile, called the Quadricycle Runabout. It had a 4 horsepower engine and could accelerate to 0mph. He sold the Quadricycle Runabout for $00 to finance his second car, which was completed in 188. In 18, Ford left Detroit Edison to help run Detroit Automobile Company. Cars at this company were built one at a time. Ford studied other company ideas, such as Eli Whitney's, who made guns with standardized parts, and George Eastman's assembly line photo processing. Ford brought these ideas to his partners at Detroit Automobile Company and was labeled as "nutty." Ford quit Detroit Automobile Company and began to build racing cars. His racing cars were good enough to attract financial backers and partners. In 10, he set up Ford Motor Company with himself as vice-president and chief engineer. This was after two unsuccessful attempts to establish his company. The infant company produced only a few cars a day at the Ford factory on Mack Avenue in Detroit. Groups of two or three men worked on each car from components made to order by other companies. The company produced over 1,700 cars the first year. It took an additional five years to convince his partners that mass production was the answer to providing cars for the average worker. The model T was introduced in 108, but it was not until 11 that Ford adapted the first moving assembly line. With the advent of the assembly line, Ford Motor had a monthly labor turnover rate of 40 to 60 percent because of the monotony of assembly line work and increased demands of production quotas. In 114, Ford announced a plan for profit sharing and $5.00 a day minimum wage for his workers--double the going wage. This ensured the best and most loyal workers in the business. By giving his workers a real living wage and mass-producing the Model T, almost any man could own a car. During the Model T era, Ford bought out his partners and shareholders and became sole owner of Ford Motor Company. By 118, half of all cars in America were Model Ts. By 17, 15 million model T's had been sold, which was half of the world's output. During World War I and World War II, Ford converted his plants to war production. The company began construction of the worlds largest industrial complex along the banks of the Rouge River in Dearborn, Michigan, during the late 110's and early 10's. The massive Rouge Plant included all the elements needed for automobile production a steel mill, glass factory, and automobile assembly line. Iron ore and coal were brought in on Great Lakes steamers and by railroad and were used to produce both iron and steel. Rolling mills, forges, and assembly shops transformed the steel into springs, axles, and car bodies. Foundries converted iron into engine blocks and cylinder heads that were assembled with other components into engines. By 17, all steps in the manufacturing process, from refining raw materials to final assembly of the automobile, took place at the vast Rouge Plant, characterizing Henry Fords idea of mass production.

Henry Ford not only perfected the standardized interchangeable parts and assembly line techniques for auto manufacturing, he also invented the dealer-franchise system to sell and service cars. He knew that in order to sell millions of cars he had to have a local distribution system. By 11, there were 7,000 Ford dealers across the country. Ford also knew that his cars needed to be fueled, so he pushed for gas stations everywhere. Henry Ford also campaigned for better roads, which eventually led to interstate-highways that are still the envy of the world. He was chiefly responsible for the consequent expansion of American industry and the raising of the American standard of living.

Henry Ford was also interested in politics and as a powerful business leader asserted some influence on the political scene. After World War I ended, Ford ran for the Senate as a Democrat. He lost, but he remained vocal in politics. He violently opposed unions and fought against the United Auto Workers, which were trying to unionize his plants. Ford was also critical of Jews, and during World War II he gained a reputation as an anti-Semite. Fords personal opinions were sometimes controversial, especially his attacks on the Jewish community and pre-war support of Adolph Hitler. After Fords death, much of his fortune was used to create the philanthropic Ford Foundation.

"What is involved with Game Theory

Foreword

This was an exciting and mind-opening research project, and I really learned a lot from it. While difficult to choose what to say, and more importantly how to say it, I found the web site gametheory.net, which had a ton of information and where I got most of my information. I will be using quite a lot of passages from this site however, as it is worded better then I ever could. These passages will be following by parenthetical references that site exactly where I got them. I don't know if this is necessary for a math research paper, but it is how the AP style book requires it, so that is how I will be doing it.

Game Theory

Game theory is an awesome yet distinctively hard to explain method of mathematics that has been used for thousands of years but has only recently come to our attention as a great type of math to use when approaching decisions that are otherwise impossible to reach. The actual first well-know and publicized book was written by John Von Neumann, who was a great mathematician, and known for the founding of the theory, named The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior. He wrote this in collaboration with another great mathematician who was also an economist by the now well-known name of Oskar Morgenstern in 144.

How to describe game theory? It is very hard to describe it, so the following is the best explanation I can give. Game theory is a distinct and interdisciplinary approach to the study of human behavior. The disciplines most involved in game theory are mathematics, economics and the other social and behavioral sciences. (Strategy and Conflict An Introductory Sketch of Game Theory. Taken on March 1th, 00. http//william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco /game/game.html)

Now the theory of games in no one theory at all, but many, now in game theory, like in regular games, there are players, always more then one, and these players must make decisions that will affect the outcome, whether it is a reward or punishment. With just two people involved in the game, it is rather simple to predict the outcome, the more players get included, the more complex the game grows, and it becomes almost impossible to give answers to the questions that the game is imposing. These questions generally are, how should the players behave? And what should the ultimate outcome of the game? To answer these questions of course, is the solution of the game. So there we have the basic outline of what game theorists have to play around with.

Game theory is not only related to war and games, it is also linked largely to economics. This shouldn't be so surprising since one of the original theorists mentioned above was one of the leading economists of his time. People ask how math is related to our economy. This is tricky, as there are several problems that make it difficult to put many economic problems in game farm. Firstly, it is hard to specify precisely the strategy that is supposed to be made available to the players, and the resolutions of the final problem is obviously debatable, as what one player might consider good and well, the other player or players might consider unfair. Better put 'these are among the circumstances that the person takes into account in maximizing rewards. The implication of property rights, a money economy and ideally competitive markets is that the individual needs not consider her or his interactions with other individuals. She or he needs consider only his or her own situation and the conditions of the market. But this leads to two problems. First, it limits the range of the theory. Where-ever competition is restricted (but there is no monopoly), or property rights are not fully defined, consensus neoclassical economic theory is inapplicable, and neoclassical economics has never produced a generally accepted extension of the theory to cover these cases. Decisions taken outside the money economy were also problematic for neoclassical economics.' (Strategy and Conflict An Introductory Sketch of Game Theory. Taken on March 1th, 00. http//william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco /game/game.html)

Now an interesting fact we all know that logic is the foundation of mathematics, and game theory has been proved useful in highly technical areas, of which logic is one of the chief ones. Another technical area to which game theory can be applied is in differential games, which have applications in control and optimization. This includes games of pursuit and evasion, warfare, and can even spread as far as profit maximization. A lot of military leaders and historical figures have applied this. In my presentation I will be including such examples as when Cortez landed in Mexico, he only had a small force with him, but he burned his ships after he landed. This was used for multiple reasons, one, his soldiers now knew that they had no way of going home, so they had better win the fight or they would all die, , the Aztecs saw the ships being burnt so they figured that the Spaniards had some kind of reason and must be invincible, so they fled to the hills and Cortez took over without a fight. Another example is in the Novel Henry V, the Count of Agincourt kills the French prisoners in full view of the enemy. This allows his men to see that the enemy sees that their men have been killed therefore if they do not win the battle and are taken prisoner they will most likely be killed as well, this makes them want to fight better and win the war. This also allows the enemy to know that their opponents know that if they are taken prisoner they will be killed, so they know that they are going to fight even harder, therefore their resolve might weaken. At the same time however, they are enraged that their fellow countrymen have been killed so they will fight harder as well to avenge the deaths of their friends. And this cycle goes round and round. It is a classic example of the mirror within the mirror; it goes on and on and on.

While doing a search on game theory I came across an interesting article in Fortune magazine, in it John McDonald described the results of a one and a half year study of the way top executives in large companies make decisions. In his report he described game theory as "…uniquely qualified to make sense of the forces of work and how it related to the strategies of some actual corporations caught up in conglomerate warfare". He went on to talk about airline competition, plant location, and product diversification as fertile area for the use of game theory.

Now while there are many different applications of game theory, such as one-person games, two person games, the utility theory, the n-person game etc. What most people deal with, and what we have been talking about so far and will continue to talk about is the Two-Person, Zero-Sum Games of Perfect Information, or in layman's terms, a game that involves two people, parties, or corporations etc.

When dealing with two or more parties, the main element that makes it a game is the amount of information available to the players, and these complicate matters considerably. The final outcome of a game depends on the actions of both players, while trying to think in advance of what your opponent will do in case of your move. 'If I do this, will my opponent do this or that, or if I do that move will my opponent do that or this', these are the classic questions that come up when applying this theory. For example the stone-paper-scissors game, in this game the players much choose their strategies simultaneously, neither knowing what the other is going to do. Now if you know what your opponent is going to do, then the answer is simple, but that would be a case of a one person game. In this game one would try to create a theory of what his opponent will do based on what he has done previously, and what he is going to do based upon the moves of his opponent. This information is of course kept in his head, as well as the possible outcomes, and the circle once again goes round and round, and we are back to the mirror in the mirror.

On this topic, in Von Neumann and Morgenstern's book, they put the problem this way "Let us imagine that there exists a complete theory of the zero-sum two-person game which tells a player what to do and which is absolutely convincing. If the players knew such a theory then each player would have to assume that his strategy has been 'found out' by his opponent. The opponent knows the theory, and he knows that a player would be unwise not to follow it. Thus the hypothesis of the existence of a satisfactory theory legitimatize our investigation of the situation when a player's strategy is 'found out by his opponent. (The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior John Von Neumann, and Oskar Morgenstern in 144.)

Now we come to the paradox of this as well, if we are successful in constructing a theory of stone-paper-scissors that indicates which of the three strategies is best, an intelligent opponent with access to all the information can use the same logic and deduce our strategy. He then second guesses and wins, so if the original player uses the 'best' strategy it would end up being fatal, however if the first player knows that the second player knows the theory and the first player knows that the second player knows that the first player knows that he knows, then he is back to the beginning of the paradox. Once again we are back with the mirrors.

This is where the mathematical equations come into effect and help us to figure out what needs to be done to ensure us of our victory. I am not going to get into all of that here, as it is too hard to explain and will take too long. However, when I give my presentation I will be showing some different mathematical equations that show how this theory works and I will be talking about it then.

Another theory we must look at that is closely related to game theory is the Nash Equilibrium, where each player's strategy is optimal given the strategies of the other players. Yes this is confusing, in better terms If there is a set of strategies with the property that no player can benefit by changing her strategy while the other players keep their strategies unchanged, then that set of strategies and the corresponding payoffs constitute the Nash Equilibrium. (William-king.www.drexel.edu. Taken on March 1th, 00 http//william-king.www.drexel.edu/top/eco/game/nash.html).

It actually is not that major of an issue while trying to explain game theory, and it can lead to more confusion, so that is all I will be talking about on the Nash Equilibrium theory.

In Summary

In constructing a theory of a or more person's game, the game theorist has a choice, he can focus on one aspect of the game and disregard others, or he can try to capture all the relevant features of the game in a single model. Yet in either of these choices he/she still will end up paying a price.

If player/players one chooses the first course, and assumed that they were dealing with other competitive players who could communicate and have simultaneous and instantaneous access to each other, then this theory is convincing and may be used to predict what the range of punishment or reward will be.

Game theory describes the situations involving conflict in which the payoff is effected by the actions and counter-actions of intelligent opponents. (Introduction to Game Theory with Applications. Taken on March 1th, 00. http//ubmail.ubalt.edu/~harsham/opre640a/partVI.htm#rintrodecisionanaly).

It has been our intention to make this report as clear as precise as possible, to do this we have dappled in or discussed application that are excessively technical. Not only would it take too long, but also it is difficult for us to understand as well, to do this we would have to mention applications that have been made to international trade, the use of national resources, collective bargaining. These are way too in depth and detailed and would take several hundred pages and months of studying.

However, hopefully my readers have some idea of game theory after reading this, and some idea of what the problems are and what to do about them.

Tom Fenton 4B 'How Priestley sets the Atmosphere in the

Opening Scenes of the play 'An Inspector Calls'

In his play An Inspector Calls, Priestly sets the scene for what is going to happen in the rest of the play in the opening of the Priestly play. He achieves this using stage directions and the way that the characters speak to each other.

In the very beginning of the book, Priestly tells us a lot about the characters and their backgrounds using stage directions 'and her husbands social superior''. From this we can tell that Mrs Birling is Mr. Birling's social superior. It is obvious from the play that Mr. Birling feels uneasy about this. He obviously wants a title for himself and he is conscious of his social status. These stage directions introduce the scene and tell you a bit of what to inspect in the play. In places they drop little hints 'Eric is in his twenties, not quite at ease…' This tells us that perhaps Eric is uneasy about sitting with his family because he has a secret or is hiding something. Priestly drops quite a few hints like this in the play.

Help with essay on LOTFOn page of the play Priestly gives us an insight into what might happen in the play when Eric 'guffaws' when Gerald says that the reason he was not with Sheila in the summer was that he was working hard in his fathers business. This suggests that perhaps this statement be Gerald is not strictly true and gives us an idea about what may happen in the future. It also means that Eric knows what Gerald has been up too and this could cause friction between the two characters in the rest of the play and gives a hint of future conflict. It also could mean that the family is not a very close one and the members are not always very close.

As mentioned above the Birling family is not very close. Priestly tells us this almost straight way in the play 'If you think that's the best she can do…' This suggests that Mrs. Birling is not very close to Sheila because she is suprised when Sheila uses the word 'squiffy'. And Eric reveals that it is not the only word like that she knows. This piece of dialogue reveals to us that the Birling family is not very close and they don't know each other very well. Mrs Birling still seem to still treat Sheila like her little girl, thus, she is suprised to learn that she knows much more vulgar language than she expected.

What would you do if your mother was terminally ill and asked you to assist her in killing herself because she could no longer take the pain and suffering? She is going to die either way, so why not save her the pain and give her, her last dying wish. Assisting her in suicide, which is what the world calls euthanasia could help her reach her last desire in life. In the United States and most parts of the world Euthanasia is illegal which is absolutely wrong.

Assisting a person in suicide will put them out of misery. We could alleviate their uncomfortable bedridden life and grant them freedom from pain. Unfortunately today, we legally would not be able to give that person the last thing they would ever want in life. We could not fulfill their dying wishes because euthanasia or assisted suicide is looked upon as being selfish and immoral. Why should one be able to choose when to die if one was not able to choose when to be born? A person was not able to choose when to be born yes, but one's parents were able to choose when to bring life onto this planet. There is no way possible a person could choose when they should have been brought to life because they were not living at that moment to make that decision. Someone else though was able to determine life for that person. Why is it that people are able to determine when to bring other life onto this planet, but it is immoral and selfish when one wants to determine when they end their own life? It is an individual's own life and own choices. In order for someone to go to the extreme of wanting to end their life they must be going through some excruciating pain. So why let them suffer in pain waiting to die when we could give them the next best thing which is an end to their burden. It should be up to the person not the government whether or not that person has to live through the pain and suffering or can if chosen end their own life. If euthanasia is legalized we could give our loved ones their last dying wish and let them die with dignity instead of pain and suffering. We could give them what they truly want if they truly want it. We could give them an end to the pain, and an end to the drawn out conclusion of their life.

Not only is euthanasia an end to one's pain and suffering it is also an end to the burden on the family members and taxpayers who are supporting a lost cause. A person who is terminally ill will end up dying one way or another. So if that person is willing to put an end to their suffering and give up on life, why not let them do so? It would save their family members a fortune on health care costs, and it would take the worry away knowing that their family member went peacefully. A family, today, with out legalized euthanasia would be paying massive amounts of money to support some one who will end up dying and who wants to die anyway. Why should we pay money to hospitals by supporting and keeping someone alive who has no chance, and no longer wants to live? If euthanasia was legalized we could put the money toward something worth spending it on. It is not worth spending the money on health care for someone who does not want it. One of the possible reasons euthanasia has not been legalized yet, is because if it were some doctors would be out of jobs. If euthanasia were legalized these doctors and hospital's would not be able to continue to drain the family members pockets any longer. Therefore the hospitals profits would drop. The longer they keep someone alive in their care, the longer they continue to put money into their own pockets. What we need to do is legalize Euthanasia and give a person the right to determine his or her own fate. If the person wants to wait it out and live out the disease, then let them. If that person and their family members can come up with the money to do that, then so be it. But if a person does not want to live out the disease any longer, and the person and their family members cannot come up with the money to support them then give that person the right to do what they want.

Every American at this time has a common law and constitutional right to refuse unwanted medical treatment and equipment. Many believe that this right to die should extend to aid in dying or euthanasia for the terminally ill at their request. Why is it that a person can refuse life sustaining medical treatment and end their life, but a person cannot ask a doctor to aid them in ending their life? It is not right that a person can end their life one way but cannot the other. This raises the question should a person who is no longer mentally capable be able to make such a decision? If euthanasia is legalized everyone should have a statement in their will whether or not they want to live out the disease and suffer in pain or end the life before the disease does. The person in this will should describe in detail what they want done if a disease should go to this extent. This would solve that problem and clarify the wants of that person. It would be somewhat of a will for your life.

As of today we have the right to choose whether or not we want life sustaining treatment, but we do not have the right to choose to have someone aid in our death for purposes of pain, suffering, and dignity. A person should have the right to choose euthanasia because it could save that person and their family the cost of unnecessary health care. We could also give people the comfort of knowing that if they want something they can receive it. If euthanasia was legalized we could put an end to the suffering of terminal illness if chosen, and if not at the mental ability to choose it should be written in a type of will for that person. Every person should have these rights, but as of now we do not. Therefore there is definitely something wrong with this picture, and we are the only ones who can change that.

Please note that this sample paper on Euthanasia is for your review only. As in 116 and 117, the government had the power to conscript men for home service, but not for overseas combat. "Home", however, included New Guinea, and therefore conscripted troops could be and were sent to the war front where they were needed most. But as allies began to defeat the Japanese, the war front spread north, and there was a demand that Australian troops be able to go to the new areas which were outside 'home'.

The situation was like that of 116 and 117 where all the government had to do was change the Defence Act, but unlike in previous years, the Prime Minister at the time, (Prime Minister Curtin) knew he had the majority of both the Houses to change the Act.

He did not push the measure through, however, instead he let the Australian Labor Party debate the issue, and come to their own decision, which was to support the extension of areas where the Australian conscripts could be sent fight.

The Act was changed, the area where the conscripts could be sent was extended-though still strictly limited-and it was all done with little opposition in the community.

Write my Essay on How the great depression and conscription affected the cause of the war. for me

In conclusion, the Great Depression affected the war by the number of unemployed and how the governments were able to use them and their situations to entice them to think of their poor economic position as Hitler wished them to. Secondly, by the Treaty of Versailles, which ensured peace between countries, but when Hitler broke the treaty by demanding Danzig, this also helped spark the war.

Also, by changing the National Security Act of 1, the government was able to introduce controls, which then gave them to power to conscript more troops as they pleased.

This, then, summarises how the Great Depression and conscription affected the cause of the war.

The family values begin with the father who is called throughout the movie as The Colonel. The Colonel fought in the army for many years. Toward the end of his career, he fought in the American-Indian War. He ended his career with seeing the slaughter of thousands of Indians. He said that there was no more horror then seeing the children and women slaughtered like pigs. The Colonel tried very hard to protect his sons from the politics of the world, which was one reason why the family lived out in the country. The wife of the Colonel said that the winters were getting too cold for her, and at that note, she left the countryside to go live in the city.

The three sons in the movie were all quite different from each other. Alfred who was the oldest, was the realistic character in the movie. Alfred will later become a politician and fight in the war. Triston was the middle son, and the wildest. Triston had the heart of a bear but the looks of a cat. He was always out looking for death, for he did not believe in waiting for it to come to him. He was also the Colonel's favorite son. Samuel was the youngest son and the most protected. He could not do much of anything without having one of his brothers right on his back helping him.

In the beginning of the movie, we find that Samuel is engaged to a woman named Susanna. Susanna, in my opinion, becomes the reason why the family keeps falling throughout the movie.

On October 14, 114, the three sons leave home to go fight in the war. Obviously, this is against what the father wants, for he does not believe in fighting war or the cause for it. Throughout the war scene, the three boys are mesmerized by how different the war scene is to what they thought. In the war section of the movie, Samuel is killed. Triston cuts out his heart and sends in home with Alfred, who is injured in the leg. Triston is dismissed from the Army but must go to a hospital for mental illness.

When Triston finally arrives home, Susanna is still living at the house. Alfred has already told her that he loves her and she has said that she does not love him back. Triston finally makes his move on Susanna, and it works, they both fall in love. Soon after, Triston becomes mentally ill again and leaves for an extended amount of time. Susanna tells Triston that she will wait for him forever, because she loves him very much. Triston writes a letter a few months later and tells her to find another husband, because he has become a hunter and has died inside.

Many seasons pass, and the Colonel is hit by a stroke. He still lives but he loses his speech and much of his normal stature. Triston finally returns home and he seems to be content. He finds out that Susanna has married Alfred and now lives in a mansion style house in Helena. Alfred is now a senator and is very high on himself. Triston marries, has two children and seems to be enjoying life for the first time.

Toward the end of the movie, Triston, his father and his brother Alfred become a family like they used to be. Susanna has killed herself because she could not have Triston. Triston dies an old man by a bear attack the same bear that was said to be in his heart.
