Conflict Resolution

Abstract

"A clash or struggle that occurs when a real or perceived threat or difference exist in the

desires, thoughts, attitudes, or feelings, or behaviors of two or more parties" (Cox,

00, p.15). Conflict arises each day in relationships. Some of the problems a team can

encounter can be within a variety of environments. However, communication is the key

to resolving the differences. Having conflict amongst a team is not the end of the world.

If you manage and understand each type of conflict effectively, then the outcome will

create positive solutions. There are three types of conflict that can occur in a team

environment. They are interpersonal, intergroup, and interorganizational. To every

conflict that surfaces, there is a possible solution. Random House Webster College

Dictionary 001 defines resolution as, "a settlement of a problem, controversy, etc." As

there are different forms of conflict, there are diverse steps to determining a resolution, as

well.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution in Work Teams

Interpersonal Conflict

There are many forms of team environments. A classroom, place of work, sports

teams, and private residences are types of team environments, just to name a few. Each

of these environments can be easily infected with conflict, unless individuals have

developed a resistance, either intuitively or with training, the skills to handle their

differences. It is also important to have established a leader within the team. Having a

leader gives the rest of the team a focal point to get everyone back on track. Assigning a

leader is an effective way to provide a sense of unity for the rest of the team. However,

what happens when conflict arises with the leader? For example, a manager and her two

assistants, recently experienced conflict in defining their individual roles. Often the

manager would overstep her boundaries by constantly fulfilling, not only her

responsibilities as a manager, but by doing the tasks of her assistants, as well. By the

actions of the manager, the assistants became confused as to what their specific roles

were exactly. Meanwhile, the productivity of the rest of the group was at risk. Proper

steps are finally taken by the assistants. It is agreed that the three individuals would

communicate their feelings and what appropriate action needs to take place to define their

roles. Thus, resolving one form of interpersonal conflict. Barge (14) indicates that

interpersonal conflict exists between two individuals within a group. There are many

outcomes that convey when a conflict is resolved. It would be great to say that with a

decision, everybody involved would win, as in the previous example, but the feelings of

all those involved must be considered. Also, the policies and procedures one must follow

have a tremendous impact on how the problem will be resolved. It is in these types of

Conflict Resolution 4

cases that you may encounter a win/lose outcome. For instance, an employee working in

a customer service call center may engage in a variety of conflicts where he must find a

probable solution, while staying within the guidelines of their employer. A customer

calls in to his financial institution to report that he had received $100.00 extra during a

transaction through the drive-thru window. The financial institution caught the mistake

and had already debited his account for the error. It is explained to him that every

attempt was made to contact him, so that he could bring the funds back instead of having

to debit his account. After reviewing the mishap the financial institution had come to the

conclusion that it was their right to not take the loss, even if the error was made on there

part. This situation demonstrates a perfect example of a win/lose outcome. Overall, it is

important to understand that various types of team conflict will arise no matter what the

environment may be. Interpersonal conflict is just one of those types.

Intergroup Conflict

Intergroup conflict involves "conflict between two or more groups, within the larger

system"(Barge, 14). It is possible for one or more of each class of conflict to intersect

with one another. The two types of conflict that most often collide with one another are

interpersonal and intergroup. The reason for this is because "every individual may be

perceived as a representative of a group, and every personal interaction may be perceived

in part as a intergroup interaction"(Lambianca, Brass, Gray, 18, p. 55). The

comprehension an individual has on intergroup conflict endures whether or not a conflict

will arise. It is often conceived that bringing groups closer together will reduce the

chance of a conflict arising. Nevertheless, each individual is holding still, their own

perception of intergroup conflict. A situation where intergroup conflict occurs is

Conflict Resolution 5

demonstrated one day in an office setting. Conflict is easily created when there are two

brokers, one who is employed with Merrill Lynch and the other with Cuna . Each broker

is in charge of working with fiduciary accounts for the benefit of a particular credit union.

Their approach on handling these accounts is somewhat different. Each employee has

their own understanding of the task they have to complete. Thus, working together with

their opposite views, is an invitation for a dispute to happen. This form of intergroup

conflict can best be described as being destructive, instead of constructive. Although the

end result to a positive solution for the example provided may seem improbable, there

may be a way to negotiate. The involvement of a third party or simply being able to

communicate amongst them may help resolve the dispute effectively. The following is

an example of constructive conflict.

A mother's battle for her special needs child and the school district in which he

attended came to blows when she felt that the Individual Education Plan (IEP) that was

conducted was less than satisfactory.

The mother, we'll call her Carolyn, has an autistic child. Due to the child's special

needs, an IEP was considered necessary to determine what instructive requirements were

needed for his educational development. A meeting was scheduled and attended by

teachers, special education coordinators, a psychologist and the parents. After many

hours of deliberation the school officials were satisfied that they had created an IEP that

would best suit the child's needs. The mother was in disagreement. The school district

dismissed her and decided to go ahead with the IEP as written.

Carolyn, distraught with the school's decision, decided to take action of her own. She

was determined to have her voice heard. One day she was surfing the World Wide Web

Conflict Resolution 6

and had stumbled across a website called, www.wrightslaw.com, which was started by

two attorneys who wanted to aid parents that were caught in the middle of certain school

dilemmas on special education issues. The website referred to two books that could be

used as reference tools. One of which, "Emotions for Advocacy", had been written by

one of the attorneys. After a great deal of research, Carolyn was ready to make her case.

She notified the school district that she wanted another IEP meeting to be scheduled. The

school district declined and told her that one had already been done and that they were

satisfied with the outcome. Carolyn informed them of her rights under Wrights Law and

used her reasoning from the research that she had gathered. Under this law it stated if a

parent was not satisfied with the final result of an IEP that had already been administered

by the school district, that he/she had the right to ask that a second IEP be completed.

The reasoning for a second meeting was to discuss possible changes in the educational

procedures for children with Autism.

Ironically, after the resolution of this conflict, another one had arisen. But this time it

was within the school system itself. Classroom teachers and the aides that were assigned

to assist them were in conflict over which type of setting would be appropriate for the

students that did not fit in this category.

This is also an example of constructive conflict. Constructive conflict can allow

change and growth to occur within the system and provide the opportunity for resolving

problems associated with diversity of opinion (Thompson, Aranda, Robbins, 001, p.

8)

Interorganizational Conflict

Interorganizational conflict occurs when there is a breakdown in leadership. Visible

Conflict Resolution 7

signs of conflict within an organization are low productivity, withdrawal, and fighting.

These are all examples of conflict that hit above the surface. But there is much more

going on beneath the surface, within the organization, between and within teams, and

within individuals.

There are a number of causes for this type of conflict. First, the members of the

team's responsibilities and what they are accountable for are unclear. No clarification is

given by leadership, nor is it asked for by team members. Each individual including the

leadership are blind in how to reach the team's main objective.

Secondly, the expectations of the team are mismatched. Without clearly knowing

what each of their responsibilities are, each member of the team will develop there own

design on how to achieve their personal objective instead of the team's objective. Each

of the team member's paths will clash with one another creating more unwanted chaos.

Proper communication skills are the key to a sound team environment. The leader

needs to be clear at communicating what he or she expects for each individual to fulfill

the team's purpose. It is also necessary for the leader to provide the appropriate

resources and support that the team requires meeting its main objective.

If some or all of these factors are found within a team's structure than help can be

found by sorting out what member of the team is accountable for what. Make sure that

the expectations of parties involved are clarified. Again, it is the leader's responsibility

to the team to identify the resources that are needed to meet its goals. To encourage that

clear, specific and direct feedback be given to the involved parties. If the leader is found

at the center of a conflict, than leadership skill development training should be provided

by the organization.

Conflict Resolution 8

Resolution Techniques

The productivity of any group is at risk unless proper steps are in place before

collaborative arrangements are to begin. Individuals should adhere to these procedures if

there is to be resolution within their prospective groups.

Individuals should thoroughly prepare their ideas, thoughts, and suggestions before

presenting them to a group. They should be able to share these ideas willingly and also

be prepared to answer questions relative to their presentation with decisiveness and

without hesitation.

Keep remarks brief and relevant. Group participants should keep their comments

concise and applicable to the context of the discussion. They shouldn't verbally run off

on a tangent with unrelated conversation. If an individual does head off task, it is up to

the other team members to get him/her back on track.

All group participants must maintain an open mind at all times. Before heading into a

discussion, everyone involved should be optimistic about the conversation and its

outcome. To do this accordingly members must listen carefully to each individual's

comments, suggestions or opinions without taking offense. This leads us to the next

phase, being able to give and receive constructive criticism willingly. The majority of

conflicts begin when individuals feel threatened or become defensive. The discussion

should remain positive. Again, the mindset of each individual should be focused on

productivity and not the opposite. The environment must remain comfortable and

neutral.

There will be times when points of discussion between a few may become personal

and argumentative. It is up to the whole team to assist in reconciling the differences of

Conflict Resolution

opinion before moving on with the discussion. It is extremely important to remember

that the outcome of the discussion must be beneficial to the team's objective and not

reflect any individuals purpose.

In conclusion, encountering conflict in a team is a healthy way to keep the team

growing in a positive direction. Learning about the differences of others can strengthen a

team, while contributing to a better understanding of how to effectively manage a team.

As discussed, there are three types of conflict, interpersonal, intergroup and

interorganizational. Although it is important to distinguish the basis of the conflict, it is

equally important to determine a positive resolution. There are appropriate steps to begin

the walk to a proper resolution. If one manages and understands each type of conflict

and the steps to a resolution, then the end result may be a triumph.

Velma Howard, age 76, knew her life was coming to an end. Lou Gehrig's disease was taking away the use of her limbs one by one. Eventually it would affect her throat and she would be in danger of choking on her own saliva. With her left arm useless, and her legs weakening, Velma began to think about an accelerated death. Her health was quickly getting worse. Most of all, she did not want to linger for months in painful decline, dragging down her aging husband and her family at the same time. Velma read books on assisted suicide, talked on the telephone with a right to die group, and discussed her plan with close friends and immediate family. With a lot of thinking, Velma ultimately decided on assisted suicide. Unable to write clearly, Velma made a three-minute audio tape outlining her reasons for deciding to die now rather than wait. On the tape she accepted full responsibility for her actions, stressing that no one else should be blamed.

Velma practiced what is called euthanasia. Euthanasia, which is a Greek word meaning "easy death" can be defined as the act of causing death painlessly, so as to end suffering.

In the articles, "It's Over Debbie" by Anonymous, "In Defense of Voluntary Euthanasia" by Sidney Hook, "Make Mine Hemlock" by Ernest van den Haag, and "The Dignity of Helplessness What Sort of Society Would Euthanasia Create?"by Rand Richards Cooper, all authors with the exception of Cooper agree that euthanasia should be a legal option for a patient.

Euthanasia is a topic that provokes as much controversy as capital punishment and abortion; primarily because it is an irreversible act. The question of euthanasia being offered to a patient is one that most people would prefer to be left alone. However, recent situations such as Velma's have started considerable discussion and debates. The political and social issues of euthanasia have raised many questions in my mind; and after reading the above articles, I believe euthanasia should be a option for suffering patients for two reasons; it is an unselfish act to end suffering, and a patient should have the option to take his or her life when they are suffering from irreversible illness.

Order Custom Euthanasia paper

In the case of euthanasia the patient is deciding to take his or her own life. There are many reasons why a patient may want to end their life unselfishly. One reason maybe the uncontrollable pain the patient no longer wants to endure. In the article, "It's Over Debbie" by Anonymous, Debbie a 0-year old women was dying of ovarian cancer. Debbie was having unrelentess vomiting, had not responded to chemotherapy, and her overall health was in painful decline. When the gynecology resident entered the room with the syringe that would help Debbie ease into relaxation, and say good-bye, Debbie simply said, "Let's get this over with," (401).

Another unselfish reason a patient may want to end their life may be the burden that their sickness puts on the loved ones around them. After being denied the option to discontinue all life supporting services by his doctor, philosophy professor, Sidney Hook was told by his physician that he would some day appreciate the wisdom of doctor not taking his life. Six months later Hook gained almost full recovery, but still did not agree with this physician. Throughout Hook's illness he dreaded imposing on his family and friends who suffered emotional misery. He would not want his family to go through a second round of pain if he were to suffer another "cardiovascular accident". "My wife and children endured enough for one lifetime. I know that for them the long days and nights of waiting, the disruption of their personal duties and their own familiar responsibilities counted for nothing in their anxiety for me," (40).

The motives for these deaths are compassion and an unselfish desire to bring on death when continued living is unbearable for the patient due to their physical and/or mental suffering.

Last winter I was struck with a serious case on pneumonia. I was in the hospital for two weeks. My lungs were fully infected, and a simple thing like turning over was painful. Every morning I was injected with a pain killer called Toradol in my left hip. Toradol never seemed to work and I was always in unbearable pain for the rest of they day. Hypothetically speaking, if I was told by physicians that I would never get better, and I would feel that way for the rest of my life; I would do that of Velma and Debbie and ask for my life to be ended. There is no need for a patient to suffer through a irreversible illness when they can be relieved of their pain.

With euthanasia one is seeking to end physical pain for which there is no other treatment. Euthanasia generally reflects an acceptance or willingness to face the inevitable. To the terminally ill, death is the last hope of maintaining any remnants of dignity left to them in a life where there is no longer any control and is the only escape from a life where pain rules their existence.

In the article, "The Dignity of Helplessness What Sort of Society Would Euthanasia Create?", author Rand Richard Cooper recalls the death of this mother's life-long best friend Gretchen who died of lung cancer. Cooper explains what his mother went through while watching her best friend slowly die, "For my mother, there was the anguish of watching a person she loved being overwhelmed by illness-an especially hard kind of sorrow." After Gretchen had passed away, Cooper explains Gretchen's death as "...a remorseful, irreversible disease that steals a person from us bit by bit." Cooper explains that euthanasia offers a way to manage a loved ones death before loved ones have to see their loved one in pain.

Euthanasia is a complex issue. Euthanasia would give patients a greater autonomy over their own lives and give the terminally ill a chance to avoid great pain and emotional distress. I believe that an individual must be able to make their own decisions - if they chose to die to avoid insufferable pain, but are incapable of acting out their wishes, we should be duty bound to help them. If all other options have been exhausted, and especially if the pain cannot be adequately controlled, then the most humane thing would be to allow the person to die...peaceully.

I. The purpose of this exercise is to understand the useful possibility of finding the melting points of a substance.

In finding the melting points of a substance you can determine…

1. A characterization of the sample, if the compound is known.

. An original record of the range in order to allow future characterization to others, if the compound is new.

. the purity of a compound.

II. No balanced equations available

VI. Conclusion

We found that the most critical part of analyzing the melting points is the bath technique.

Getting the correct rate of temperature was the most difficult and took the most time. But the slower the better our result were. We found that for the test bath 55 was a good mark. For the slow heating 44 heated @ °C per minute. We have analyzed that the unknown is the compound Salicylic acid. I feel that I have met the objectives of the laboratory. I can now satisfactorily obtain the melting point of a substance and know if it is pure or a mixture. I have become familiar with the equipment necessary to complete these tests and feel capable. The flaws I have noticed are in the heating apparatus. It can be difficult to find the right heating rate. If a bath was created with a measurement of the rate of heating per minute it would be helpful and take less time. The error of the test was due to inaccurate measurements taken by myself or partner. Although I feel the results inaccuracy was not that important this time around but in an experimental lab that is dependant on temperatures that are to .5 °C, I can see how it would be important to get the ranges correct.

VII. Questions

. The effect of an insoluble such as NaSO4 on the melting point of a compound would be negligible. An insoluble, such as sand, charcoal or NaSO4 will not depress, increase or widen the melting point.

4. The true melting point compared to a rapid heating will show a difference in the melting point range, as with the experiment in Melting Point using the Unknown, Salicylic acid. At the rate of C° per minute the Melting point range observed was per minute the Melting point range observed was 157-158 C°. At 0 C° per minute the Melting point range observed was 155-160 C°.

11. It is important to pack the compound and rid the capillaries of air-because these pockets will cause a different rate of temperature in the tube. Temperature difference in the air pocket will cause the compound to melt at a different temperature of the "actual temperature, what is shown on the thermometer.

1. If an unknown (acetanilide) was mixed with an equal amount of acetanilide the melting point would remain the same. Where as if the same unknown was mixed with benzoic acid the melting point range would widen and depress. We know this to be true because of the rules of melting points. Melting points can shown future characterization, Identification, and determine purity. A soluble will contaminate & change the melting point range by lowering and widening it.

Please note that this sample paper on Melting Point is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Melting Point, we are here to assist you. Love Conquers All…

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet has been seen as the most tragic love story in history. But many people don't look past the text and read between the lines. This story is full of contrasts. Joy and sorrow, light and dark, youth and age, love and hate, life and death. Love is a dangerous emotion a lot like fire is to the elements. But even if fire burns everything down, the forest will always grow back stronger. To share the beauty of its trees with the world, no one losses, everything things repair themselves in different ways. This is similar to the Romeo and Juliet tragedy.

Love takes over your whole body. It blinds you so you cant see anything but the object of your affection. It deafens you so you cant hear anything but there voice. You cant taste anything but there lips on yours. It makes you cold when you don't have there loving arms holding you. But at the same time it keeps a fire burning in your heart. Love is a drug, you feel so good when you have it but when its gone your helpless, totally vulnerable. Love can be so pure and innocent and go as deep as the sea. But even the rose has thorns, love can be sweet but bitter. Bring you so much joy but also so much sorrow. It has so many contrasts, that's what makes it the most complex and confusing emotion, also the most dangerous.

Love is what holds us together, Hate is what keeps us apart. These two emotions are what makes up Romeo and Juliet. The hate which the Montague's and Capulet's have for each other vs. the love Romeo and Juliet have for each other. The contrasts together mix a deadly potion which has a fatal outcome. What is the difference between love and hate? Some say it is only a fine line which divides them. If it is possible for Romeo and Juliet to love each other after the hatred that there families has taught them about the other, then this statement must be true. Romeo and Juliet showed us that love was above everything there parents, even hate that's what made it so strong.

Buy cheap love conquers all... term paper

Juliet had a lot of stresses in her life, with her parents telling her she must marry Paris, her unexpressed love for Romeo and her nurse watching her every move. But still through this she has found the strength to love and care for Romeo.

"My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known to late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me, that I must love a loathed enemy."

Juliet was totally unbiased and must have been a bit of a rebel. To go against her parents will. The name Montague meant nothing to her. It was the love she has for him that overcame it.

" What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet."

How could this emotion not be powerful, look at what it has done to Juliet. But it has also effected Romeo in much the same way. He to went against his parents wishes and risked everything to be with the one who loved him.

After Romeo decided that Juliet was the one and only for him he went out of his way to make her his. Once they got married she was all he could think about. But in the tragic circumstance that Romeo was banished from there fair town of Verona they were separated. Romeo was banished because of the clashing of two worlds uniting, a confrontation with Tybalt gone wrong, two souls left the earth. Tybalt murdered Mercutio, an enraged Romeo sets out to gain revenge and ends up killing Tybalt Juliet's cousin. Romeo's brotherly love for Mercutio made him do what he did, love is a dangerous emotion especially when people start dying from it, but the real tragedy is yet to come.

This created turbulence for the newlyweds. Just wanting to be together but being separated just about destroyed them Juliet went to the Friar in desperate need of help. Both Romeo and Juliet had visited the Friar, he had already come up with a plan enabling them to be together. The Friar had made a potion for Juliet to take which makes her look like she had passed on. So her family will think that she is dead and she will not have to marry Paris. After her funeral she would arise and leave town to be with Romeo.

By this point Romeo could think of nothing but Juliet and how she was.

"News from Verona! How now Balthasar? Dost thou not bring me letters from the Friar. How doth my lady? Is my father well? How doth my Juliet? That I ask again for nothing can be ill if she be well."

Everything went to plan until the letter that was sent to Romeo informing him on what was going on never got there. Instead the word that Juliet was dead got to him. Romeo was destroyed.

In shock and denial Romeo rushes back to Verona despite his banishment to see if the news was true. Again he is going against what he is meant to do for Juliet. Only love can make someone so crazy that they don't care what happens to themselves only the other person. He finds Juliet cold and lifeless in the church, Romeo declares his love for her

then takes his own life, as he does Juliet wakes up and sees what has happened, thinking she can never go on in this world without her husband and only love she takes her own life. To be reunited with Romeo and then they can be free, together loving each other throughout eternity.

To souls gone. Left the earth bound for a more peaceful life together. But the real tragedy is that it could have been prevented, from the very beginning. Even though it seams that all is lost and burnt down. The forest starts to grow, a new start to life fresh and new. Though it was tragic that Romeo and Juliet took there life's in protest of there love. The Capulet's and Montague's were reunited in their child's deaths. As far as we know they made friends thinking that they owed it to there son and daughter. A new friendship bonded a new start, a better start for something that was always meant to be. No one losses in this story. Everyone gets what they want. Romeo and Juliet got to be free with each other just to love one another, which is what they wanted to do the whole time. The Capulet's and Montague's came together in grief but left as friends. Everyone got what they wanted in the end. It was just tragic they road they had to take.

The balance of payments budget deficit has always been a popular topic of casual discussion at dinner parties among friends. The figures are a watched and followed closely by stockbrokers, fund managers, bonds and currency traders as well as investors. While business leaders, economists and policy makers spend the weekend debating the relevance of these newly acquired numbers on the Sunday business show. Even movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger who is running for governor of California was quoted in the Courier-Mail (0 August. 00, p.) saying that he was disgusted at the massive budget deficit blamed on mismanagement by politicians. Clearly the Balance of payment is very important to the citizens of the country. But is having a budget deficit really that bad?

This essay will begin by firstly explaining the composite construct of the Australian Balance OF Payments (BOP). Secondly we will compare and contrasts the United States (US) system of accounts with the Australian BOP. Thirdly, we will use the recent 10 year BOP data to compare the performance, direction and implications for these countries. It will be shown that by just quoting a budget deficit, it is not enough to see the overall picture of where the economy is heading. It is not in the scope of this essay to prove existing economic theory on the BOP, as this is not an economic paper.

Cumby and Levich (14, p. 11) describes the balance of payments (BOP) as "the name given to the record of transactions between the residents of one country and the rest of the world over a period of time."

In Australia the BOP is made up of two general main categories the current account and the capital and financial account.

Help with essay on Balance of paymentsThe current account records all international goods and services. The Australian BOP current account consists of sub-accounts states McLennan (18, p. 5). The first is goods and services, second is income and the third account current transfers. With in each one they are further sub-categorized in to smaller accounts. It is usually a one year timeframe that all short term transactions are recorded in the current account.

Figure 1 shows the current account with the board categories.

According to McLennan (18, p. 5) the goods account comprise most movable goods that change ownership between an Australian resident and a non-resident. This account is further broken down into, general merchandise, goods for processing, repairs on goods, goods procured in ports by carriers, and non-monetary gold for a more in-depth analyses.

Services account is where services are provided or received between an Australian resident and non-residents. It is also broken down into smaller more informative sub-accounts providing specific information on our major service sectors.

In the income account is where all transactions of income are kept. These include everything from dividend payments received by a resident from a non-resident foreign company to an Australian receiving an income form a foreign based firm. Again the accounts are also further divided into its relevant sub-accounts.

The last account in the current account is the current transfer account. Transfers are considered to be the provision of resources to a non-resident country with no expectations of an economic return. These include foreign food aid other donations supplied to non-residents. McLennan (18, p. 7) stressed that current transfers needs to be distinguished form capital transfer which is located in the capital account. The distinction is that if the aid is consumed within 1 months of being received then it is considered a current transfer, while if it is longer than 1 months it will be classified as a capital transfer and will be located in the capital account. This distinction is in line of the view that all short term transaction will take place within 1 months and are recorded in the current account.

The capital account and financial account are the second category of accounts used in the BOP. The capital account comprises of both capital transfers as distinguished with the current transfers. The "acquisition and disposal of non-produced, non financial assets" (McLennan, 18, p. 8) such as copyrights are also included. Figure gives an in-depth look at the capital and financial accounts.

The financial comprises of long term financial transactions between an Australian and a non-resident which will lead to a change of ownership in Australian's foreign assets or liabilities. This account is closely related with Australia's international investment positions.

Together the capital account and the financial account represents Australia's financial long term foreign investment position.

Figure shows the Capital and the Financial account

The BOP uses a double entry accounting system to replicate the financial position of a country as if it is treated as a business entity. A debit entry on the BOP is any transaction that gives rise to an outflow of foreign currency or a negative sign, while a credit on BOP is a transaction which will cause an inflow of foreign currency shown with a positive sign. As in accounting for a firm, all transactions have a credit entry and also a corresponding debit entry to produce a net balance of zero.

However in reality this is never the case and there is a special account on the BOP called Net Errors and Omissions which exists for completion of the accounting style. It is located on the last line of the capital and financial account. It exists so that discrepancies between credit and debits entries can be balanced off.

Discrepancies in amounts arise because of the complexities of recording an entire nation's transactions in the international arena for a particular period of time. For every given period there are a large number of transactions taking place. Because there are no single source of getting the transactions, each and every transactions needs to be individually recorded in order to produce the BOP data. The sources of data are form very diverse areas, from a bank trading in financial derivatives to a university selling education overseas.

Timing is also another factor which further makes it hard to get accrete numbers. Firstly there are lags in time between payments of goods and the when the goods actually arrive.

Secondly because the exchange rate is always fluctuating, converting local currency into us dollars at different exchange rates will lead to inconsistencies. The Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is the organization responsible for compiling the BOP figures and the figures are revised each quarter.

Before we can start to compare the Australian BOP with the American BOP we will firstly need to make sure they are comparable in structure and classification. The latest edition of the Balance Of Payments Manual 5th edition (BPM5) published by the International Monterey Fund (IMF) in 16 is the standard which the Australian BOP is compiled in accordance with. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) (10, p) the US BOP complies with the standards of the Balance Of Payments Manual 4th edition (BPM4) with a few slight exceptions. However because BEA (10) seems rather dated, it is very possible that by now the US BOP will have been written in accordance with the latest BPM5 which is the international standard.

The major difference between the Australian BOP and the US BOP in the naming and the additions of specific accounts in the BOP and also the currency the data are reported in. According to the BEA most of the accounts have the same basic meaning as with the Australian BOP.

As with the Australian BOP, the US BOP is also conceptually also split into board accounts. The accounts are the current, capital and the financial account. Differences arise because each country is different in the products they produce and trade. The BOP is a summary of their trading position in comparison with other countries, each country will alter the structure of their BOP to better present the structure of their economy. This is much like a company adjusting their financial records to better reflect the specific type of business they are in. One good example is, the US have a large proportion of their budget spending in the US Military so it is only natural they will have a specific account for that. While Australia is a great exporter of minerals, so under the goods account there is a specific account just for that. But however the over all meaning behind the current, capital and financial account remains the same.

The second difference is that the US BOP is in US dollars while the Australian equivalent is compiled with Australian dollars. Before attempting the compare the performance of the two countries one must make sure the data are comparable.

Initially, the overall look of the two BOP looked different, however it is just the way in which they are set out. The IMF does not have a preferred way in which the accounts are placed. There are many different ways you could represent these figures to best suit your needs.

These initial differences can be clearly seen in figure .

What are the implications of the BOP?

As we can see in the figure 4 and 5, both Australia and the US has been running a deficit. These figures are still in their raw form. That is the US bop is still in US dollars while the Australian BOP is in Australian Dollars (AUD). However it can be clearly seen that both countries have a deficit in trade and a surplus in-flow of foreign funded investments.

Over the page are the 10 year BOP data for both Australia and US.

A structural evaluation approach can be used to determine which state of development the countries are in. Both have a deficit on trade (current account) and a long tern capital inflow (surplus in the capital and financial account). According to the characteristics devised by Maximo, Francis and Laurence (18, p.5), both Australia and the US are considered to be an immature debtor. Net foreign investment income is close to zero.

From 186 to 00, Australian has always had a current account deficit, and a capital account surplus. In the periods between 1 to 00, the US too seems to have the characteristics of an immature debtor. Nadler (001, p.4) says, there seems to be a trend continuing as current accounts deficits get increasing larger and the capital account surplus get bigger.

This suggest a slow down in the domestic industries of both countries. As imports over take exports, it is a sign that their exports are un-competitive in the international markets compared with countries like China. Also with "deflation and recession in Japan and Europe" (Waggoner and Shell, 00, p1), demand for US and Australian made products continues to fall.

Unless the currency depreciates prices for exports are still seen as too expensive. Being an immature debtor, the implications for both countries are that their currency not depreciate, but will remain relatively stable.

Although, both countries are running trade deficits, their currency is unlikely to devalue unless there is a drop in foreign funded domestic investments.

There is a sell correcting mechanism where there are free floating exchange rates. It is always thought that when a country run a continual current account deficit (that is they import more than they export), then they will need to sell their own domestic currency to purchase foreign currency in order to repay foreigners. This disposal of domestic funds would devalue the domestic currency.

A devaluation of the currency will then make the domestic products more competitive overseas. As more exports occur, imports will become more expensive and hence domestic consumption of imports will decrease, resulting to a balance of trade.

However there is no evidence of this happening. What is happening is that the currency is being recycled back into the US and Australia by the continual investment in to these countries. This is shown by the surplus in the capital and financial accounts of both countries.

Because US and Australia (as compared to Japan) are seen as a stable economy, investments are coming in which offsets the current account deficit. This is why the dollar is still in demand and would not fall in the foreseeable future unless there is government intervention to lower interest rates or other change monetary and fiscal policy. Or there are signs of depression in either country.

Recently there are some signs that the US might be heading into recession. "Depression is an economic slowdown accompanied by falling prices. Its hallmarks rising inventories, falling demand, rising unemployment and lower wages." (Waggoner and Shell, 00, p1). This scare resulted in a falling USD.

The fall in USD will mean that for the next period, US products are more completive. This will reduce their trade deficit. By now having more exports and hopefully the domestic consumers will avoid more expensive imports.

A further drop in the US dollar is also expected in the coming year because of the elections. "It is a normal attitude of foreign fund managers to take to the side lines and adopt a wait and see approach during election year" says Aquino (00, p11). This will further see a decree in investment into the US.

Warburton (00, p8) argues that the saving rate of a country is important. He says that if a country does no have enough domestic funds to draw upon i.e. to borrow. Then the country will need to borrow form aboard. This will lead to an increase capital account surplus, or a current account deficit. Another way to make the capital account go in deficit is to make domestic residence save more. Increasing the interest rate and decreasing inflation will encourage residence to save more and spend less. With low inflation, real return will be high. Low interest rates will stimulate imports because residence sees less incentive to save, while higher interest rate encourages more domestic savings. With a pool of domestic funds, there will be less need to borrow over seas.

At this point in time there is no evidence which suggest that having a deficit is an undesirable situation. In both Australia and the US, the BOP deficit has no direct negative implications to the economy.

In conclusion it can be seen that by just judging on the bias of one figure which is the current account balance; weather it be a deficit or a surplus. It is impossible to say if this is good of bad for the economy. It can be seen with the Japanese example that by having a surplus does not automatically make an economy boom. There are so many other factors to consider.

Many times, authors reflect their novels on the problems within a society, or great problems within the characteristics of the human race. By doing so, it shows the disappointment the author has in the society he or she lives in. Writing is an indirect and direct way of expressing feelings and ideas for authors. Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of such author. In his novel, The Scarlet Letter, written in 1850, Hawthorne shows the flaws within a society, as well as, flaws within the human race. The Scarlet Letter is a story about a woman, Hester Prynne, who faced many struggles in the Puritan community she lived in. She had a secret affair with the Reverend Dimmesdale, and bore a child. This was the main cause of all the problems in the novel.

After reading the novel, readers learn that Mr. Dimmesdale is really a big hypocrite, who let his temptations run too far. His hypocritical character is evident in many people today. People often put on this mask, hiding big lies and secrets behind it. They put up this "perfect" front for others to look up to as role models, where behind, they can be the biggest hypocrites and liars. An example of such a person would be Mr. Bill Clinton. Clinton was many peoples' role model since he was the president of the United States. He seemed like a great man that people could trust. However, the public later saw Clinton as a big liar and hypocrite after his secret affair with Monica Lewinsky was revealed. Temptation and dishonesty caused him his end to presidency. Humans are weak psychologically. Many things can simply take control of the human mind, and cause the human to easily give in and crash.

Living in a Puritan society was harsh. There were so many morals and regulations to follow and obey to. If one broke a moral or law, he or she would have to suffer the consequence of severe punishment. In Dimmesdale's case, he performed adultery, which was greatly against the Puritan belief. However, it was much more difficult for him to reveal to the public his sin than it was for Hester. Dimmesdale was a reverend who the whole town looked up to. They saw him as if he was almost a "perfect" Puritan man. The pressure the society gave him caused him to hide his sin, and act as a "perfect' man. This situation is a lot like many of today's situations where people often feel pressured by their surroundings, causing them to either hide away or change. Today's supermodels are a great example of such situations. When people mention supermodels, the first thought that pops into their heads is "beautiful young women with perfectly skinny bodies." This thought causes many supermodels a lot of pressure in maintaining what the majority sees in their superficial minds.

Although the novel reflects a lot about the people today, the Puritan society is completely different from the society today. The Puritan thoughts and beliefs are completely washed out of people's minds. There is no such thing as a moral and pure community anymore. The world is so corrupted by violence, drugs, terrorism, murder, theft, rapists, etc. Adultery is not a great sin to people anymore because it's so common, as well as, divorce and early age sex. Puritanism died long ago after society became more open to the outside world. The more a society opens up, the more corrupt it may become.

Cheap University Papers on The Scarlet Letter

Overall, a lot of the flaws in people and society today are evident in Hawthorne's novel. He observed well, the flaws of human beings. Hawthorne saw past the fake mask people put on. His novel could have been an indirect message to caution people that looks can deceive. As the famous saying says, "Never judge a book by its cover." One learns to not always believe what one sees; instead, look in deeper to find the truth.
