Period 4

During the Cold war many things were not as different as one would think. All the people that I interviewed said that things were not much different except for a few memorable times.

The first person I chose was a boy named William. He was 1 years old and he had what people called "nuke fever." He as many other people said they had to hide under their desks at school and close all of the blinds so that no light could be let in. William though took extra "precaution" which was almost absolute craziness. He had made a fallout shelter out of his ping-pong table, had food and first aid ready, and had a theory about pencils. He thought that if he put pencils all around the shelter the lead would stop the radiation from the bomb coming in and it would protect him.

The second person that I talked to was Dave Bryant. He said that he had all of the students go into the girls bathroom because that was the safest place in the school. He remembers going to bed at night petrified because he thought that he could die at any time. He also recalls his father's hate for JFK. He thinks that he was the one that started the Bay of Pigs.

Another person that I talked to was my grandma Rhoda. She remembers that when she was young they had to turn off all of the lights for the air raid drills. She said that her father had been an air raid warden. He had to go around the town and make sure if all of the peoples lights were off. If they weren't off he had to go and make sure that they turned them off immediately.

Another woman I talked to was Eunice. She was from Utah. She recalled that they frequently had to hide under the desks because they thought that the bomb could be dropped at any time.

Finally I talked to a woman named Lynn from Georgia. She said that they had only few drills. They would hide under the desks but other then that there was not much more that was done. People weren't very much concerned in Georgia as they were in other places.

Some of the people told me about the fads and fashions back then. Some things that the men wore were rolled cuffed Levis, leather dress shoes, and button up shirts. The women would wear mostly plain dresses. If you were Jewish she said that you would wear a potato sack. Some games they liked to play were kick the can, jump rope, and watched for the jolly olly man or what we call the ice cream man. Many people I talked to said that they didn't like the music that was played back then. One woman said, "our music was like watching grass grow, it sucked, I like Eminem now."

In conclusion, many people took the bomb seriously and others took at all as a joke, but most people went on with their lives like always.

Waste Minimisation

Waste is not necessarily rubbish! People dispose of material as waste only when they think it is no longer useful, or if they believe it cannot be reprocessed economically. If an ecologically sustainable future is to be assured, Australian's need to conserve all their resources, especially non-renewable resources, and energy.

On average each year, each Australian generates about 800kg of industrial, commercial and domestic waste. Most ends up in landfill sites. Potentially hazardous waste generated in the Brisbane area alone each year fills 000 trucks. In addition, there is demolition waste, radioactive waste, sewage sludge, agricultural waste, mining wastewaters, and waste of energy and water.

What is waste minimisation?

Write my Essay on Waste Management for me

Waste minimisation aims at eliminating waste before it is produced and reducing its quantity and toxicity. Waste prevention is the primary goal.

Waste includes unwanted end products of manufacturing, packaging, items of metal, paper, plastic and glass, chemical substances, and vegetable and garden waste. Pollution of water, and air and land occurs from the production and disposal of wastes. Indirectly, humans also generate toxic and hazardous waste through the use of everyday items like detergents, solvents, pesticides and bleached paper.

Better planning and management can minimise the need for landfill waste disposal.

Why minimise waste?

A combination of world population increase and high consumption of products in the developed world has created a global waste problem. Affluence has created effluence. The rate of waste generation is now estimated to be greater than the capacity of the environment to absorb.

In John Hersey's novel, Hiroshima, he follows the accounts of six people before, immediately after and long-term actions of the people when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. One person whose accounts he followed was Dr. Terufumi Sasaki. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was a young surgeon at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital during the time of the bomb drop. He was only twenty-five years old and had just completed his medical training at the Eastern Medical University in Tsingtao, China. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was an idealist and helped people in a small town, where his mother lived, without a private medicine license. He had a strong will to help sick and injured people, which is the reason why he went into Hiroshima to work at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 145.

The morning of August 6, 145, Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was going to work at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. He had got on an early train to commute to Hiroshima from Mukiahara and a streetcar to take him to the hospital. If Dr. Terufumi Sasaki had left at his normal time to go to work at the hospital that morning he would have been closer to the center of the blast than he really was. When the bomb went off over Hiroshima, Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was 1,650 yards from the bomb's epicenter. He reported the chief surgeon when he went to the hospital and then went to get a patient's blood sample for a Wassermann test. As Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was heading down the main corridor to the third floor of the hospital, the atomic bomb detonated. He was one step past the windows in the corridor when the bomb flash reflected into the corridor. Dr Terufumi Sasaki dropped to one knee and said, "Sasaki, gambare! Be brave!"(14) The blast from the bomb ripped through the hospital, causing Dr. Terufumi Sasaki's glasses and slippers to fly and the blood sample to crash against the wall. Thinkin that the bomb had only hit the hospital Dr. Terufumi Sasaki started to bandage up the nurses and the other surgeons in the hospital not knowing that many of Hiroshima's citizens were making their way to be treated a the hospital.

Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was busy taking care of the hospital staff's injuries when hundreds of Hiroshima's citizens started to pour into the hospital. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki was the only uninjured person in the hospital. Out of thirty doctors in the hospital only six were able to work and only ten out of over two hundred nurses were able to work. As Dr. Sasaki was treating the victims in the hospital he noticed that the hospital was increasingly getting more crowded. He later realized that injured citizens were piling into the hospital. Dr. Sasaki took a pair of glasses from an injured nurse and used them to be able see a little better while treating the victims of the bomb blast. As the day progressed more and more bomb victims came to the hospital to receive treatment. The doctors and nurses who were busy treating the victims started to skip over the slightly injured and went directly to the heavily injured people. As the day continued Dr. Sasaki quit working as a professional surgeon but as "an automaton, mechanically wiping, daubing, winding, wiping, daubing, winding." (6) At one point the nurses and the doctors tried to go outside and take a break from the work, at this time the staff had been working for over ten hours straight. Eventually other doctors, nurses, and materials were sent to the hospital to help the staff that was already working in the hospital. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki stayed and helped at the hospital until the majority of the victims were taken care of.

Dr. Terufumi Sasaki went to get his private medical license to start a private clinic in Mukiahara. It took him ten years to go through school to get his license. Once he got his license he went to the Bank of Hiroshima to start a clinic. At first he could not get his loan, but eventually he got his loan and built his clinic. As the years passed he built many services to help the people in Mukiahara. He was criticized for developing all of the services. People thought he was creating them for his own personal gain. Dr. Terufumi Sasaki saw the destruction that the atomic bomb created and helped the people of Hiroshima survive the incidents. He followed in his grandfather's steps and started a private clinic in Mukiahara. He survived the atomic and lived to tell his tale many people through the times that have passed.

We learn from document (a),written by a petty tradesman, that people in Germany were starving, -"…I made a living like a peddler…"-,and cause of this famine were the taxes, inflation imposed by the communist government that as doc. (a) says "deprived me of all means of livelihood', also this man of the document ,like many other mans in the same conditions, was a soldier that fought in front line during the ww1 and be treated like this now ,after they defended their country so bravely, is to them unacceptable.

So this class needed employment ("I moved to Shoenbeck where unemployment forced me on the dole") and Hitler's government promised them a job as the 7th point of the German Worker's party (GWP) says' we demand that the first priority of the state is to ensure that its citizens have a job and decent life' and this was very attractive in an unemployment and starvation period! Also we understand that the problem of the food was very big and the Nazis party pretended back their colonies and promised to do efforts to "…provide food for our nations and settlement areas of population surplus " ;we can also say that as a reaction to the horrible way of life in that time ,people started to be afraid of communism ,afraid and irritated against this government that kept them unemployed and starving, so the normal instinct they had was to vote for a party at the extreme opposite. At last but not least point we have the national pride that during that time was under their shoes and is vital for a citizen to be proud of his country, to hope that his country would become the best..so they needed national pride?..and Hitler promised them national pride.."a number of us welcomed the patriotic groups, particularly those of the Hitler movement".

Other reasons for the great number of supporters of the nazi party are suggested by source (b) written by a PHYSICIAN!

Is always important to underline the author of the source because it gives us an idea about the category of people to which the party talked to! In this case we have a Physician, representing the higher class and the culturally elevated one, previously we had a petty tradesman representing more the lower classes; so we see that the extreme right party had for target more than one category of people! Butt to attract to attract a certain class…we need someone from the same class and this is well explained in source (b) because our physician went to a meeting where Dr Ley (so another scientist) "gave remarkable analysis of governmental responsibility for the plight of Germany, at the same time outlining the aims and purposes of National Socialism" and the words of this person of such a high culture where so well said "that he seemed to be expressing my own thoughts and desires"; and this is precisely what you need during the election period so with no delay our physician as many other scientists like him joined with no delay the party. So we have underlined this technique of the nazi party that consisted in let the people think that that party was the one expressing their ideas instead of pushing the electors to a new way.

Help with essay on HOW THE NAZIS WERE ABLE TO ATTRACT OVER 13 MILLION VOTES IN 1932The stronger point of the Nazi party was always the enormous national pride that was in many German citizens, especially in the workers that where in the army. In source ( c ) we find a railway worker that is horrified about the idea of leaving Germany in the hands of Bolshevism because his social class (and again we find the party targeting to the different social classes) is the one that offered to the country the best soldiers and now this class is alienated from their country and this ,for him, would be a catastrophe for Germany because if the country loose his supporters…there is no more country! So the socialist slogan "workers of the world unite " made no sense for them; but ,instead, attracted him very much the promises of the Nazi party of a community of blood ,meaning all from the same country (and here it refers basically to the first 10 points of the GWP) and also of course the "barring of all class struggle' attracted him very much too because his class ,the workers one, is one more hit by this struggle who is talking about.

In source (d) we have some motivations about how could the anti-Semitic aspect of the nazi party be a good thing for some people!

The Jews where the ones who practically owned the money because they where traders and business mans so they gained fortunes, and often farmers , when they had a bad year, they asked them to borrow money with astronomic interests so the debt became bigger and bigger month after month ; in that period ,just after the war, many people where in this condition so they had all motivation to approve the 4th point of the programme of the GWP about considering Jews as strangers and chase them from the country!

And here source (d) is written by a farmer so someone of a high class because a farmer ,in period of war, could gain an enormous fortune because during the war the prices for goods rises steeply. We know that the writer of source (d) is not ignorant because the document says "I left the gymnasium…" so he has a certain instruction and this give more credibility to doc.(d).

In the second part of the source the author is very in favour of another important point of the National socialism the stop to the class struggling and so stop the prejudices of the lower classes concerning the upper ones.

There is another aspect of the NS party that I haven't developed but that emerge from source (e)the leader of the party; to attract people doing promises is never enouth,we also have to give an image to the Party you represent , and the image of the Nazi one is Adolf Hitler!!

Is the image that the people of all social levels needed to see a proud ,strong, virile man capable to gain respect ,capable to rule a strong nation and a strong army!! This is what source (e) is talking about, a man able to give the citizens their pride back, but most important a man that could represent the ENTIRE nation, a man who is a soldier, a worker, a politician…someone who had the same experience of the citizens and so able to understand them and give them what they need! People felt that Hitler was very near to them!--"Hitler you are our man, you speak as a soldier of the front and as a man you know the grind you have been a worker man; you have lain in the mud EVEN AS WE-no big shot but unknown soldier"'and people in Germany where sure that he was the correct man to rule the country and he couldn't do nothing than bring good things"For your innermost heart will not let you do otherwise"'

Source (f) remember how Germany was strong long time ago and how unconquerable Germany was when was strongly unified, and this was the secret of national socialism.

Germany had suffered a lot in the past and the will to come back stronger than before was very strong in Germans heartssource (g)"As a result of lesson of history and my own experience both during and before the war I became National Socialist."

Like this ,for a combination of all those reasons that I gave in the elections of 1 the Nazi party ruled by Hitler was able too attract over 1.000.000 votes!

If I were a cultural relativist, I would tell Protagoras that he must abide by his society's law as it is what the majority of his society believes, making the law to torture his sister to death to be the true way he must deal with his sisters promiscuity. As the Adberan society is his culture, I would, as a Cultural Relativist, adivse Protagoras that he must accept his culture's values and traditions and abide by them, putting aside his individual differences. If Protagoras is a member of the Adberan society, then he must accept their cultural values. According to Aberan culture, is it morally right for Protagoras to torture and murder his sister because she committed promiscuous behaviour which is fornwed upon by the majority of society, therefore as a Cultural Relativist, I would advise Protagoras to accept the law, and then he will not be considered immoral by his society for disobeying his culture. If he wants to maintain a position within his society, then Prodagoras should agree with them, as moral values demonstrate a connection to his community, which, ultimately, is his identity. As a Cultural Relativist, I would tell Protagoras to stop and think about the positives and negatives that will arise from his actions. For example, if he murders his sister, he will lose a beloved family member, but will gain social acceptance and happiness, not only for himself but also for every other person in his family, so I would ask him if losing one family member is worth gaining happiness for everyone else?

Dear English Syllabus Committee

It is hard to comprehend the fathomless terror of being psychotic, we who live in a world that has its road maps, recognizable to us all. We reach out for a glass and it is where we expect it to be. We do not hear voices telling us to kill ourselves. We do not believe that television is broadcasting our most secret thoughts. We look at our children, and their faces do not distort into that of wickedness. We do not believe that everyone in the world is plotting against us.

A mental illness such as schizophrenia cannot be seen or easily identified. Society's response to the victims of this tragic disease can often be hurtful. It is essential that society can identify with these people and respond in an accepting manner. I would like you to consider placing the text Tell Me I'm Here written by Anne Deveson on the recommended text list as an expository text. An expository text is defined as writing that is intended primarily to inform, instruct or explain. Tell Me I'm Here is an intensely emotional, compelling story of Jonathon, a charming teenager who turns into a fearful and tormented young man. He suffers the mental illness known as schizophrenia. Tell Me I'm Here has many purposes; Deveson writes for the millions of others with schizophrenia, who daily walk a tightrope, courageously trying to balance between their world and ours. She writes for the families that struggle to hold on to hope when often they are scourged by despair, and who suffer from ignorance and neglect. Most importantly, Deveson writes to portray the unknown horrors of this frightening disease to society. The aims of Deveson are to inform, instruct and explain to the reader about this disease, these covering the fundamental aspects of an expository text. "A thing is not impossible merely because it is inconceivable." This is a quote taken from Lewis Carroll, a famous writer and poet which relates to the issue of schizophrenia. It shows us that, although it is difficult for the majority of society to comprehend, schizophrenia still exists. By placing this text on the recommended syllabus list, the level of understanding of this disease would be heightened; ideally, socities response to the victims of schizophrenia would be more accepting.

Help with essay on Mental Illness

Adolescence can be a time of extremes, from rebellious independence to agonising vulnerability; a time to burst through into the world and find your identity. Jonathon, the teenager in Deveson's story was not finding his. To loose one's identity is to loose a sense of self this renders life meaningless. It also complicates the lives of those who care for him, physically and emotionally. The author Deveson creates an extremely melancholic tone throughout the novel, and, while I read, I felt a huge sense of sympathy for the family and for Jonathon. Deveson shows us the fact that society is ignorant of mental illness and treats it with contempt. She portrays the horrors of the illness, the immediate effect on family and some of society's response to this illness. For example, an extremely powerful quote reflecting some of society's response is "The voice on the radio says that the only good schizo is a dead one!" This quote shows society's contempt towards those suffering mental illness. It expresses responses that are unkind, unfair and uncompassionate. Deveson brought to the subject her immense intelligence and humanity, using this to create a sense of anger towards the ignorant society and a sense of empathy for Jonathon, who represents all victims of mental illness. This outstanding piece of literature must be shared with others; we all must experience the torment of Jonathon's madness and see the difficulty associated with caring for these malevolent, troubled personalities.

Deveson challenges the legal and the health system throughout the expository. She articulates her distain towards the hospitals and the system that did not help her. Deveson uncovers the ironic flaws in the health system; For example, she is told that "Most mental health services will not take mentally ill people if they have a drug problem and drug and alcohol services will not take mentally ill people." The irony can be seen when one realizes that people suffering this disease take drugs in an attempt to solve these strange emotions and experiences. Basically, the victims of schizophrenia and their families are left with no choice! Deveson portrays hospitals that are run to suit the suit the system rather than the patient; even the best of them are authoritarian institutions. This part of the novel opposes the way I used to think of the health systems, I used to believe that the patients came first. But when I took a good look at today's health system, I now believe that it is far from my idealistic view of the system that I once possessed. Take for example, a feature article in the West Australian on the 7th of July showed a mother tried to kill herself and her two children after a councilor refused to see her because he wasn't on duty. It seems to me that Deveson has embraced and discussed a realist topic, an absurd health system, and shared with us the problems that she saw in the system.

Meaning is created from the context of the author combined with the context that you bring to the text. The syllabus states that authors create texts that reflect their particular attitudes and values; therefore, recognizing the context of the author is essential. Deveson's story is both compelling and tragic. Tell Me I'm Here is a heart-rending story of a mother facing the realization that her child is going mad. The emotions experienced throughout the text are intensified by the notion that Jonathon, who developed schizophrenia at the age of 17, was her son. We struggle to comprehend the fear associated with being psychotic - Anne Deveson and her children Georgia and Joshua are forced to experience and survive this fear. In this novel the two children are 'pushed' into a shadow by Jonathon's madness, which, in turn becomes part of their story. They are forced to grow up and mature too fast and in doing so loose much of their childhood. Deveson includes poetry written by the daughter Georgia that expresses her distain towards Jonathon. Joshua, the son, suggests a hitman for his own brother which is very powerful in that it is tragic.

The setting for this expository is in Adelaide, which establishes a sense of realism I suddenly was alerted to the fact that this illness is occurring in our own country! I used to feel like these problems were on the other side of world, however reading this placed me in Devenson's backyard. I felt so close to the issue of the misunderstood mental illness and the horrors felt very real. Deveson also uses statistics to prove to us that it is very much a large part of society. For example she shows us that one person in every hundred will develop the illness, worldwide that is 55 million people. That is an unbelievably high statistic which shocked me when I first read it. Although there is such a tremendous number of victims worldwide, schizophrenia is most probably the most mis-understood of all illnesses.

By including this text on the recommended English syllabus list, not only will the students who study this expository text be benefiting from the particular features of the construction of the text such as tone and setting, they will also be presented with issues that they will know little about, therefore, will alter their own personal context. Finally, by including this text, you may be enriching the lives of those who suffer any form of mental illness and perhaps, the most mis-understood illness will no longer be the most mis-understood.

Yours sincerely

William F. Blissett once said, "Recognition mitigates suffering. Learning always has something of pleasure about it, and so, no matter how painful the realization, how destructive its outcome, there is always an element of gain and growth." In Shakespeare's King Lear, characters learn and grow through suffering.

King Lear is only able to see the truth and grow as a person after losing everything that is important to him. At the beginning of the play, King Lear is blinded by his self-image. He is draped in "Robes and furr'd gowns" (IV, vi, 181) that provide him with great pride. After King Lear loses his kingdom and his pride and is in a state of suffering, he becomes enlightened to the equality of mankind. He philosophizes that "man is no more but such a poor, bare, forked animal". Later on in the play, Cordelia attempts to return Lear to his previous state and puts "fresh garments on him", but Lear's enlightenment of truth and equality make it impossible to return to his previous false identity.

Edgar experiences the realization of human equality after being forced to flee the Kingdom and live in disguise. Edgar begins the play as the respected son of a noble man, Gloucester. He is good and is referred to as "Legitimate Edgar" as opposed to his bad and illegitimate brother, Edmund. Edgar is deceived by his evil brother, Edmund. He is forced to flee the Kingdom out of fear of death. Edgar disguises himself as a begger, he announces "Whiles I may 'scape, I will preserve myself, and am bethought to take the basest and most poorest shape… My face I'll grime with filth, blanket my loins, elf all my hair in knots, persecutions of the sky…" (II, iii, 5-1). He is forced to leave behind his old life, he says "Poor Turlygod! Poor Tom!' That's something yet. 'Edgar' I nothing am" (II, iii, 0-1).

Kent is a truthful, loyal and enlightened servent, yet even he learns through suffering. In the first scene, Kent is banished from the Kingdom for speaking out against the King. Lear begs, "Peace, Kent! Come not between the dragon and his wrath", and Kent replies, "This hideous rashness answer my life my judgement, Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least; Nor are those empty-hearted whose low sound reverbs no hollowness". During Kent's punishment and suffering, he learns not to be so rash. He explains to Lear that he had "more man than wit about [him]". Kent learns to overcome his anger and rashness in order to serve the King. He is described as "Kent, sir, the banish'd Kent; who in disguise follow'd his enemy king, and did him service improper for a slave".
