William F. Blissett once said, "Recognition mitigates suffering. Learning always has something of pleasure about it, and so, no matter how painful the realization, how destructive its outcome, there is always an element of gain and growth." In Shakespeare's King Lear, characters learn and grow through suffering.

King Lear is only able to see the truth and grow as a person after losing everything that is important to him. At the beginning of the play, King Lear is blinded by his self-image. He is draped in "Robes and furr'd gowns" (IV, vi, 181) that provide him with great pride. After King Lear loses his kingdom and his pride and is in a state of suffering, he becomes enlightened to the equality of mankind. He philosophizes that "man is no more but such a poor, bare, forked animal". Later on in the play, Cordelia attempts to return Lear to his previous state and puts "fresh garments on him", but Lear's enlightenment of truth and equality make it impossible to return to his previous false identity.

Edgar experiences the realization of human equality after being forced to flee the Kingdom and live in disguise. Edgar begins the play as the respected son of a noble man, Gloucester. He is good and is referred to as "Legitimate Edgar" as opposed to his bad and illegitimate brother, Edmund. Edgar is deceived by his evil brother, Edmund. He is forced to flee the Kingdom out of fear of death. Edgar disguises himself as a begger, he announces "Whiles I may 'scape, I will preserve myself, and am bethought to take the basest and most poorest shape… My face I'll grime with filth, blanket my loins, elf all my hair in knots, persecutions of the sky…" (II, iii, 5-1). He is forced to leave behind his old life, he says "Poor Turlygod! Poor Tom!' That's something yet. 'Edgar' I nothing am" (II, iii, 0-1).

Kent is a truthful, loyal and enlightened servent, yet even he learns through suffering. In the first scene, Kent is banished from the Kingdom for speaking out against the King. Lear begs, "Peace, Kent! Come not between the dragon and his wrath", and Kent replies, "This hideous rashness answer my life my judgement, Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least; Nor are those empty-hearted whose low sound reverbs no hollowness". During Kent's punishment and suffering, he learns not to be so rash. He explains to Lear that he had "more man than wit about [him]". Kent learns to overcome his anger and rashness in order to serve the King. He is described as "Kent, sir, the banish'd Kent; who in disguise follow'd his enemy king, and did him service improper for a slave".
