One flew over the cuckoo's nest

In this paper I am going to explore how the main characters of the book work as symbols. To study this issue, I will focus on Nurse Ratched, Randle McMurphy and Billy Bibbit because I

think that these characters represents the main symbols in the novel. In this essay I am going to study also the evolution of Chief Bromdem, the narrative voice of the novel.

Nurse Ratched a middle-aged former army nurse, controls the hospital ward with an iron hand and masks her humanity and femininity side. She represents a machine that demands complete

control and perfect order from everyone, represents the oppressive mechanization, dehumanization, and emasculation of modern society A huge organization that aims to adjust the outside as well as she has

the inside...like a watchful robot, tend her network with mechanical insectskill, she dreams of there in the centre of those wires is a world of precision efficiency and tidiness, a place where the schedule is

unbreakable and all the patients who aren't outside, obedient under her beam (6). So powerful are the Chief's descriptions of the Nurse as a mechanism of terror, able to control the hospital with beams of

hate, with these descriptions is easy to see the Nurse as the pure image of the evil which is another symbol. She nods once to each. Precise, automatic gesture. Her face is smooth, calculated, and precision-made, like an expensive baby doll, like a machine.(5) Nurse Ratched represents a desire for efficincy order, control at all costs, she has convinced herself that if some control is good, complete control is better. Ratched has complete control over every aspect of the ward, the black boys, the nurses and even the doctors are completely submissive to Nurse Ratched authority, she selects her staff for their submissiveness, and she weakens her patients through a psychologically manipulative program designed to destroy their self-esteem.The big deal here is that Ratched's control is based as much on intimidation, as demostrated in chapter four, by her threat against Mr Taber. The meetings that Nurse Ratched organiced demostrate the intimidation and domination techniques that she uses, humiliating the patients describing their personal psychological problems infront of other patients, in my opinion the purpose of these meetings was to pit the patients against one another.Now. At the close of Friday's meeting...we were discussing Mr Harding's problem...concerning his young wife, his wife was extremely well endowed in the bosom and that this made him uneasy because she drew stares from men on the street... (40) And the best way to do this, to get you to knuckle under, is to weaken you by getting you where it hurts the worst (57) she knows their weak spots and exactly where to peck. The patients try to please her during these Group Meetings by airing their darkest secrets, she maintains her power by the strategic use of shame and guilt, ads well as by a determination to divide and conquer her patients. We can see that Big Nurse is manipulative and dictatorial, using methods like this one to assert her power over the patients. Moreover Nurse Ratched represents ideas of sexual repression, authoritarism and conservatism. There is no question that the repression of sexuality is an important part of the Nurse's tactics, one of Nurse Ratched's gratest crimes is that she represses and denies the sexuality of her patients and even, her own sexuality. The patients of the ward are victims of a matriarchy We are victims of a matriarchy here , my friend (5) this is one of the most controversial themes in the book, the repressive power the Chief calls the Combine seems to be represented mostly by women, Nurse Ratched, Mrs Bibbit and Mary Louis Bromdem, who force men to obey society's rules and deny men's sexuality. For example at the end of the book, Nurse Ratched uses repressive sexuality as a weapon against Billi Bibbit. Oh Billy, a woman like this, a cheap, low, what worries me, Billy is how your poor mother is going to take this In this moment is when Nurse Ratched uses Billy's mother to instill a sense of shame that she drives him to suicide, showing the cause of Billy's problems. We can notice also her role as a twisted mother figure for the ward, treating them as children who cannot accept any sense of responsability.Boys I've been great deal of thought to what I am about to say, it is entirely for your own good

that we enforce discipline and order. In chapter eight we can find a confrontation between Ratched and Mc Murphy centers around sexual ground, when Murphy appears in front of Ratched wearing only a

towel and threatening to lose even that covering. Good morning, Miss Rat-shed! How's things on the outside? You can't run around here -in a towel!! (1) here we can apreciate the contrast between

liberated and repressed sexuality. In my opinion the main idea is that Nurse Ratched's interest is not in the patients, but rather in perpetuating her own sense of control.

Randle Mc Murphy big, loud, sexual, dirty and confident represents the antithesis of Nurse Ratched, his loud and free laughter stuns the other patients, who have grown accustomed to repressed

emotions. Mc Murphy represents sexuality, freedom, and self-determination. According to Nurse Ratched McMurphy is a manipulator. He is what we call a manipulator, a man who will use everyone and everthing to his own ends (4) the irony of this situation is that she herself is manipulating tha patients. From my point of view McMurphy is not a manipulator in my opinion he teaches the rest of the patients to be sane, this sanity consist of the ability to laugh, both at yourself and at a world that is often cruel you have to laugh at the things that hurt you just to keep yourself in balance, just to keep the world from running you plumb crazy, Man, when you lose your laugh you lose your footing (67) .Also when they were playing cards he was joking and talking and trying to get the players to laugh along with him (77). He has been saddled with the responsability of being a hero and a friend to men who desperately need this things, the book shows this responsability, teaching the other patients-through basketball games and fishing trips not to let their fears paralyze them. Mc Murphy is a revolutionary against Nurse Ratched, Murphy represents anarchy and disobedience and he tryed to break the rules, to change the ward. He was the first patient who ask about his medicine what are these two little red capsules in here with my vitamin? I don't like to create trouble, but I don't like to swallow something without knowing what it is(1) And during his time in the hospital we can notice the effects that Murphy has had on the other men in the institution, for example when Mr Sefelt said that he need no more medication (164), we can see that they started to fight for their rights against Nurse Ratched and they started to understand the importance of rational choice. He teachs them to become vulnerable by making choices, he also gaves them advices like there are no better way in the world to aggravate somebody who's trying to make it hard for you than by acting like you are not bothered(111). Unfortunately, his generosity is sometimes mixed with a desire for personal gain. During his time in the hospital Mc Murphy also demostrate the absurdity of some of the rules of Nurse Ratched, for example when he demostrates the absurdity of not allowing patients to brush their teeth whenever they want, Finally he abandons the rules, driven to rebellion by an unfair system in which he cannot take part in the supposedly democratic system that Nurse Ratched controls.Despite she claim that the vote is democratic, her vote includes the Chronics, who have no ability to make rational decisions.with these events the staff notice that McMurphy's ability to choose shows his sanity .On the other hand through Chief Bromden's narration, the novel establishes clearly that McMurphy is not crazy, he believes that the hospital would be more confortable than the Pendleton Work Farm, where he was serving. Another characteristic ot McMurphy is that he represents a sexual liberator, the conversation between McMurphy and Harding defines the opposition between Murphy and Ratched on sexual terms. Also when he claims that the EST increase his sexual potency when he comments that his next conques will light up like pinball machine. When McMurphy arranges for the meeting between Candy and Billy, this emphasizes the theme of McMurphy as a sexual liberator. He is not a static character, he changes considerably during his time at the hospital, at one point McMurphy assumes the role of selfless martyr, when he defends George against the invasive cleaning procedures of the black boys, this moment is the first action that Murphy undertakes that is not motivated by self interest, Murphy pay for this action with shock treatments. Another important moment to explain the representation of McMurphy as a martir is the night of the party when he refuse escape until Billy has his date with Candy, and , finally when he attack Nurse Ratched. At the end Murphy has sacrificed himself for others like Christ, here is the most powerfull symbol of the novel. When he takes the patients fishing, he is also like Christ leading his disciples to the sea to test them, to teach them. Finally we can find also this symbol in the cross-shaped electroshock table. you are strapped to a table, shaped, ironically, like a cross, with a crown of electric sparks in place of thorns. (66).

Perhaps the saddest charcter in One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is Billy Bibbit, who has a bad stutter seems to everyone a mere boy, though in fact he is more than thirty-one year old. Billy Bibbit is dominated by his mother, one of Nurse Ratched's close friends, who has intimidated him into behaving younger than his years and instilled in him a strong sense of guilt. At the end it is this guilt that causes him to commit suicide when Ratched find him with a prostitute and threatens to tell his mother.Billy is voluntary in the hospital because he is afraid of the outside world. Billy represent a clear example of a victim of the matriarchy a victim of oppression, he is a product of a domineering mother who controls his every action, including deciding which woman is appropriate for him to marry. Billy's mother is the cause of his mental problem, and the cause of his suicide.

Chief Bromdem tells the story after he has escaped from the hospital, like Murphy he is not a static character, when the novel begins, Bromdem is paranoid, bullied, and surrounded much of the time by hallucinated fog that represents his desire to hide from realitylet my self go completely, lose myself in the fog the way some of the other Chronics have(8). He is also a victim of oppression since his childhood. Everyone in the hospital believes that he is deaf and dumb, when McMurphy begins to pull him out of the fog, he tell him his secret. The firts step in the narrator evolution is when the fog and the hallucinations come less often, and he is able to remember more of his past and to think about it rationally. With Murphy he recognizes that despite life's anguish he has to laugh. With Murphy the Chief begins to fight against the Combine which is the representation Bromdem's vision of society as a oppressive conglomeration, and represents also authority figures. The reason for Bromdem's hospitalization is a mistery, he may have had problems of oppression with his mother, another reason could be his experiences in Worls War II. Mc Murphy arrives at a crucial point of Chief's life, when he was in the hospital for years of self-imposed silence, years of abuse, he was undergone over 00 shock treatments. From the begining the Chief was impressed by Murphy who reminds him of his father. he talks a little the way Papa used to, voice loud and full of hell(10) Another important step in the narrator evolution is when he vote Murphy, is the first definitive, responive action that the Chief takes during the novel. At this moment is when Bromdem by making choices becomes vulnerable, when Bromdem makes the decision to join Murphy in protest of Nurse Ratched, yhe fog disappears. Also when he awakes and watches the dog outside the window, this shows that after this he is more aware of the outside world, and of the existence outside of the institution. I have to say that Mc Murphy is the primary cause of this change.

At the end of the book, the roles of Murphy and the Chief are reversed. Through the course of the novel Bromdem has regained his voice, and he makes the final step toward selfrealization at the novel's end.

By moving the control panel, Chief Bromdem fulfiis murphy's wishes and reasserts himself as a member of society.

"In the Middle of Difficulty Lies Opportunity"

-- Albert Einstein

When Albert Einstein had a difficult problem to solve, he tried to see the opportunity of learning something new while he was working on the solution to his problem. Since he was a curious scientist, he had some knowledge in different fields, but he knew he wasn't an expert in all of them. When he was trying to write his theory of general relativity, he took the opportunity to ask mathematicians and physicists that he knew to review his work. He was glad to get other scientists' ideas and opinions on the problem. He didn't allow himself to feel like he was at a dead end, and that he would never solve his problem. Instead, he saw the chance to look at the problem in a different way. He knew he could learn more about advanced mathematics or light or astronomy by asking his scientist friends. Einstein's idea was that anyone should try to see the opportunities for learning from problems that have not been solved yet.

I think the quote means that first of all, you should not feel stuck when you are in a difficult situation. You should think to yourself, "Why am I having such a hard time figuring this out? What am I missing? Who can I ask who knows something about this? Maybe I can find out the information myself?" Asking yourself these questions will start to show you that the problem might not be so bad after all! It could be interesting talking to someone who knows a lot more about the problem than you do. The first person you ask might recommend a second friend, and that person might direct you to a third friend. Without realizing it, it turns out that you have made three new friends simply because of a problem you could not solve by yourself.

Help with essay on Albert Einstein narrativeput in a paragraph relating his quote to something that happened to you.

Many people can face difficult times in their life and not be able to see an answer to their problems right away. I think they should try to look at their situation and ask themselves a few good questions. They should make a list of what they know so far, and what they need to know to help solve the problem. They should ask themselves, "Can I read a book or an article to learn some answers? Can I ask a good friend or a teacher for this kind of information?" What they originally saw as a difficult problem may actually give them a chance to learn about many new subjects. A long time after they resolve their difficulty, they might say that they were almost glad that it happened. They will be able to tell great anecdotes about the totally unexpected things they discovered while researching their problem.

The difficulties that happen in our lives actually give us all opportunities to learn new things. These opportunities may not be obvious to us at first. We need to look for the opportunities by looking at the parts of the problem with an open mind. Once we know what is missing, we can go exploring for the parts to fill in the blanks. We could ask other people to help us figure it out. We can read, research, and learn for ourselves how to fix something. We may ask our friends or teachers how they would go about looking at the problem. If we humans were never faced with difficulties, we would never have the opportunities to discover new ideas. It is an excellent philosophy to look for the opportunities for new knowledge each time we think that we are stuck "in the middle of a difficulty".

The main setting for this story is located in the house of Count Olaf. There, the three Baudelaire experience the most horrible things in their life. In Count Olafs home, it is very dirty and dusty, with a dim light and an odd picture of an eye, like the one tattooed in his skinny ankle. In my thoughts, Count Olafs home is to be described as a pigsty compared to how the three Baudelaire children described their mansion. There is a place where the children are not allowed to go to and it is the forbiddden tower. The three Baudelair children sleep altogether in one small room and have to share the one bed that Count Olaf had given them.

Two of the main characters are Count Olaf and Violet. Count Olaf is the new guardian of the three Baudelaire children since their parents passed away, and has been mean to them ever since then. He is also an actor and goes around the world with other people and is of course, a count. Count Olaf will do whatever to get his hands on the Baudelaire fortune, but the Baudelaire children will not allow it. Violet in the other hand is a very smart fourteen-year-old. She is very good at building many things, and cannot concentrate with her hair all around her face, so she ties it up. Count Olaf plans to do something to her to get her family's fortune, but she does something so smart, that traps Count Olaf at his own game.

What happens to the three Baudelaire children is that they have a new guardian named Count Olaf, since their parents passed away in a fire incident. Count Olaf then tells the children days later that he is going to do a play called "The Marvelous Marriage" with the three children staring in it. He is to play as a brave man and Violet is to marry him. There next door neighbor, Judge Strauss, who is actually a judge, is to be the one who marries them. What Count Olaf did not tell them is that it going to be a real wedding, with a real judge, and real official document of their marriage. Although Count Olaf had told them it was all fake, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are all awfully suspicious. Klaus then finds out Olafs evil planned tells Violet. Then the following morning, Count Olaf's friend kidnaps Sunny and puts her at the top of the forbidden tower in a birdcage. The other two children find out and Count Olaf tells them that if Violet does not marry him, they will drop the birdcage and let it fall stories down with Sunny in it.

Cheap University Papers on a series of unfortunate events

What happens then is that the next morning of the play, Violet wakes up early in the morning to try to save Sunny from the birdcage up in the tower, so she uses her head and invents a type of a hook to help her get up the tower. She then secretly gets out of bed and heads to the backyard, and then she goes to the tower and throws the hook over the window repetitively to see if it gets caught onto something. When it finally clinked to something, she went up the tower hold on to the rope, not looking down. When she gets up the tower, she sees that that the hook caught on Count Olafs friends hook. The man with the hook calls Olaf and tells him what had just happened in his walkie-talkie. Count Olaf brings along Klaus when he goes up the tower and keeps them up there until the theater performance is to start. When the performance is about to start, they take the two children to the theater and change them to their costumes. They then see Judge Strauss and try to tell her what has happened but it was soon too late as Olaf tells them to get on the stage. Judge Strauss then says the words as both Count Olaf and Violet say "I do" and sign the contract. Once they had both signed it, Count Olaf tells everyone in the theater that it is a real wedding and that they are now really married and have all been tricked. Then Olaf tells his friend to let Sunny go, while the whole audience and Judge Strauss try to find ways to make the marriage a false. Then out of nowhere, Violet tells them that the marriage was a false because she was supposed to sign her name with her own hand, which is her right, but signed with her left. The marriage was then called off, and Sunny came crawling to the stage. Olaf was then to be sent to jail, but the lights had then suddenly turned off. Violet had the gone to turn them back on, although she could not see where she was going, but then heard a voice being whispered to her that he would get them back and kill them all. She then turned the lights back on, and Olaf and all the people in the play were gone except the children, the audience, and Judge Strauss. Judge Strauss had then planned to adopt them, but then the man who works in the bank and takes care of their money named Mr. Poe says that they can't because they have to be living with a relative. They then got on Mr. Poe's car and left the theater saying good-bye to Judge Strauss until they see her body from the far distance.

What I learned from reading the book was that you should never trust anyone, not even your relatives. I also learned that you should always be brave and that you should think of things that can get you out of your problem. Another thing that I have learned was to always use your head on any bad situation and to be very strong when it comes to facing your problem. One thing that I learned of the three Baudelaire children was that you should stick together with the person you are with when you are in a big problem.

I would recommend A Series of Unfortunate Events A Bad Beginning, to any kid from about grades 5 to 8. It is a very interesting book filled with excitement on every page. I thought it had to do with some thinking so you can understand the book even better. The three Baudelaire children were very clever when it came to solving problems and that is, what I think what made the book more exciting.

Transformations

The process of transformation involves more than just the adaption of ideas and form to contemporary situations

The process of transformation involves more than an adaption of ideas and form to contemporary situations. It offers the audience with a greater sense of clarity of the ideas presented, and its representation also stimulate the audience with new perspectives with which to view the original text. The movie Clueless directed by Amy Heckerling is a transformation of Emma by Jane Austen. The universal themes explored in Emma allow for effective correlations in Clueless whilst the differences in time and setting of the two societies account for the necessary adaptions of form and techniques used to communicate the similar ideas of the texts. In Emma, Austens extensive use of dialogue, description and authorial intrusions allow for more vivid characterisations whilst the bright colours, music and camera angles articulated in Clueless convey the essentially same messages with brevity and greater animation, to suit the contemporary audience, and its classification in the teen-pic genre.

The primary idea in Emma and Clueless is the growth into knowledge and self-awareness in the characters of Emma and Cher respectively. In Emma, a focal scene contributing to Emmas development was the incident in Boxhill. Her rude remark to Miss Bates followed by an unaffected reprimand by Mr Knightley held Emma under an almost overwhelming sense of remorse, painted through acute authorial intrusion into Emmas feelings.

Cheap Custom Essays on transformations

As she reflected more, she seemed but to feel it more. She had never been so depressed. (67)

Austen manipulates this technique effectively through her ability to astutely convey emotion through language. As a consequence of this incident Emma comes to acknowledge her position and hence her responsibilities and expectations of her in Hartfield. Her growth from her inappropriate behaviour is proved through her sincere apology to Miss Bates the next day.

In Clueless, Chers most impacting growth to self-awareness occurs after a series of events- a disagreement with Josh, failure in her driving test and surge of tension in her relationship with Tai. After this, the audience is presented with Cher from a long shot, walking down a flight of stairs towards the mall, projecting an interpretation of Cher in a sense of isolation within her familiar environment.

Everything I think and everything I do is wrong. I was wrong about Elton, I was wrong about Christian, and now Josh hated me...

In Clueless, instead of authorial intrusion, Heckerling uses the voice-over of Cher to provide the audience with direct involvement into Chers thoughts, allowing insight into the events through Chers perceptions as well as knowledge of the reality of the situations. The repetition I was wrong about...I was wrong about... together with Chers visual expressions enhances upon the poignancy of her emotional turmoil, attracting the audience closer towards Cher to experience her as a breathing creature. In comparison, written text, particularly through the perspective of an omniscient narrator can not express this sense of direct involvement to the proximity of which film techniques can exploit with ease. Hence, through the transformation of the growth of Emma to the growth of Cher, Heckerling not only adapts the ideas in Emma to Clueless, but also supplies it with greater immediacy to satisfy the contemporary audience, and allow them to perceive Emma to be more animated than the grant of their original expectations.

The most obvious difference between Emma and Clueless lies in its setting and lapse of nearly two centuries of time. Emma is set in the Victorian society of the early 1th century, in the microcosm of a prosperous hierarchical village society. The Woodhouse and the Knightley estates and history establishes their powerful standing in Highbury, whilst the Martins and Bateses, with their lack of connections and property represent those of the lower caste. Mr Knightley aligns himself accordingly with his responsibilities as a gentleman of high esteem in Highbury. Austen shines integrity and compassion in his character through the genuinity of his every speech, judgement and service.

No, he is not her equal indeed, for he is as much her superior in sense as in situation. Emma, your infatuation about that girl blinds you. (87)

Austen manipulates the style of his speech, his every sentence is direct and true and yet reveals the affections in his heart. It is to a significant extent due to Mr Knightleys position in relation to Emma socially that allows him the benefit of correcting her, and of her taking value in his good opinion. It is in such a way that Mr Knightley becomes the paternal figure in Emmas life, and the major example of gentility and moral uprightness from which Emma and other characters also draw upon.

Likewise, Josh in Clueless, assumes a position of greater knowledge, as he is a college student and also because of his experiences and understanding of the world beyond Los Angeles. However, the social hierarachy apparent in Chers world does not apply to Josh as it does with Mr Knightley. Josh is inevitably an outsider to Chers social circle. The social stratum in Clueless takes place within the school, where popularity is the standard of judgement. Despite this however, the role and influence of Josh upon Cher remains essentially unchanged from the original text. Heckerling exposes the character of Josh particularly through the image he conveys in his costuming. He dresses unfashionably, wearing shirts in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation and Amnesty International, thus revealing his charitable nature and indifference to self-image.

He dresses funny, he listens to complaint rock, hes not even cute...in a conventional way...And hes a hideous dancer, I couldnt take him anywhere.

While Austen presents Mr Knightley at the highest position within Highbury, Heckerling presents Josh alien from Chers social associations, and through their respective management of their positions, elevates the virtue in their characters. Consequently, through Clueless and Emma, the audience can appreciate Josh and Mr Knightley as the source moral guidance for Cher and Emma, and also perceive the different level at which the social hierarchy of the two societies operate.

Emma and Clueless explore the role of women in the context of their respective societies. At surface level, it is justifiable to claim that women in Chers society no longer require a male figure to depend upon, however, the undertone of Heckerlings piece is some aspects is essentially very conservative in this aspect, to the extent that may haunt the audience into the realisation that the role of women in this contemporary society may not have experienced the vast changed so pronounced. In Emmas society, the ultimate goal of women was to find a suitable partner for marriage, one within financial situation and in the appropriate social sphere. A good marriage secures them from the horror of working and ageing to be a poor old maid. Austen uses dialogue extensively to develop the character of Miss Bates, an old unmarried spinster, to satirise light-heartedly the consequence of being both poor and unmarried.

That will do just for me you know. I shall be sure to say three dull things as soon as ever I open my mouth, shant I? (64)

From such a perspective, the role of women, particularly those not born into wealth or connection, in this patriarchal society appear to be very confined and domestically concerned.

In Clueless, women appear to have acquired greater independence and financial control. Cher and Dionne as well as all the other females can lead a financially stable and respectable life without marriage. Despite this however, there still appears to be an inclination for the female to depend upon the male, and marriage still remains as the ultimate goal. Shifting our concentration from Cher to the adult world of Clueless, it is brought to our awareness that even in this globalised city of Los Angeles, the positions of great power rest with the males.

Daddys a litigator. Those are the scariest kinds of lawyers. Even Lucy, our maid, is terrified of him.

Chers father, his working partners, and Eltons father who can get you into any concert are all authority possessors in this society, and are all male. The authority of Chers father is initially established through a camera angle which captured him from behind facing down upon the staircase in the house. It is maintained to some extent through the strong tone of voice in which he often chastises Cher with. Women is still presented to be the gender that performs the domestic duties. This is seen through Cher taking care of her fathers eating habits and Joshs mother ringing him to go home. Hence, Clueless is more than an a mere adaption of form and ideas from Emma as it allows the audience to comprehend and deduce the extent and nature of the changes in aspects such as the role of women over the years.

On several levels, the composers of Emma and Clueless, impart their views upon the matters of vanity and of the superficial and satirises the issues concerning it. Austen assigns a distinctive voice to every character in Emma, amongst which there is one where Mr Woodhouse feels to rather hurt the ear. (81)

...and I must do my caro sposo the justice to say that he need not be ashamed of his friend. Knightley is quite the gentleman. (80)

Mrs Elton refers to Mr Elton as her caro sposo to stress her status as a married woman, and presumes that this gives her precedence even over Emma. This reflects upon her superficial nature and gives way for Austen to present criticisms of the attitudes of the Victorian society, through humourous authorial commentary and particularly through responses from other characters.

Actually to discover that Mr Knightley is a gentleman! I doubt whether he will return the compliment and discover her to be a lady. (81)

This is a technique often embraced throughout the text in Emma, as it exposes aspects of character mentioned as well as the character who projects this response. Emmas dislike of Mrs Elton originates Mrs Eltons arrogance of which is heightened in Emmas perceptions due to the inferior position of Mrs Elton as having a merchant background. This reveals also, Emmas class consciousness and hence her superficial nature aswell.

Heckerling transforms this aspect from Emma to Clueless, accumulating her ideas of superficiality into a context that concentrates more on an appearance-based vanity. Heckerling creates this image through the use of garish colours, costuming and incidental music all of which complement the stereotype. The opening of the film uses a montage encompassing all such devices, presenting Cher and her life. This together with the background music Kids in America escorts the film to its commercial and superficial path.

But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.

Chers perception of her way normal life is voiced while she is displayed, selecting clothes from a computer, an obvious oxymoron. This use of irony cleverly reveal the commercial setting of Clueless, whilst also embarking upon the disparity between Chers perception of an event and the truth of the event itself. Austen and Heckerlings representation of the superficial vary significantly. In comparison, the transformed Clueless appear to satirise the superficial facets of the society in context. With respect to this, the audience is justified to feel that Emma is ironically more reflective of the contemporary American society than Clueless. Regardless however, Clueless re-enforces the transformed nature of superficiality exposed through mindless conversation to make-overs, easing the audiences comprehension and relation to Emma, in addition to adaption merely for the enjoyment of Clueless itself.

The process of transformation extends beyond an adaption of ideas and form to contemporary situations. Through the different contexts and the adaptions necessary to faciliate them, the audience can come to appreciate the essence of the original text through the contemporary transformation. The transformation of ideas between the texts provides the audience with deeper insight into the changes that have occurred through time. The transformation of form, have supported an alternate perception to the original text. The techniques used due to the form and intended audience are vastly different between Emma and Clueless, and when viewed together, provides a magnified impression upon both texts. This is because the similarities of the ideas presented is emphasized to the audience through the different techniques used to explore them. The strength of one text influenced by the skill of the composer and form and it compensates for the weakness of the other, for exactly the same reason.

I feel value and attitude differences in our team will create a positive impact on our groups effectiveness. The diversity on our team brings to the group innovative thinkers from all types of educational and workplace backgrounds.

The team created originates from all across the United States and groups together

via the University Of Phoenix, an online University that promotes organizational team relationships for its education experience.

In a team oriented environment values play a big part of how members fill that culture with self-disciplined people who are willing to go the extra mile to fulfill their responsibilities. Values are defined as broad preferences concerning appropriate courses of action or outcomes. (University Of Phoenix On Line, E-Text pp.6). Values play a big part on how people think and make decisions. Some examples of values that make a team successful are things like competitiveness objectivity, respect, energy, vision, attitude, leadership, understanding, and excellence. Whether or not people on a team think introverted or extraverted the individual who can have the discipline to pay attention to small detail and the big picture says a lot about that person. To add to that, this is the type of people I feel who are on Team "A". (" When you have disciplined people, you don't need hierarchy. When you have discipline thought, you don't need bureaucracy. When you have disciplined action, you don't need excessive controls."). (Jim Collins, http//www.attitude-leaders.com).

Another form of diversity on our team consists of different attitudes. Attitude is defined as a predisposition to respond in a positive or negative way to someone or something in one's environment. (University Of Phoenix On line E-Text pp 6-6). I feel that our team accepts criticism well and adapts, learns and overcomes differences in attitudes. A well diverse team such as ours is a recipe for a high performance team. We may have some members of Team A who bring to the table different skill levels different leadership abilities and different socioeconomic backgrounds. This type of diverse team can combine these essential ingredients and together with core values be very successful.

Looking back at my life, there mustve been at least twenty different types of careers that I wanted to pursue as a profession. Some of these professions were fantasy jobs. Jobs like being an astronaut, becoming the president of the United States, or even becoming a jet fighter pilot. I wouldve loved doing any of these things for the rest of my life, but things change, as do you, when you get older.

I researched many careers before I graduated high school, and the one that struck me the most was computer engineering. I first learned about this career when representatives from Polytechnic University came to my school and spoke about all degree programs that they offer at their school. Computer Engineering struck me the most because of all the different things you can do in that particular field. Its not like other careers when you do one thing and one thing only. In this field, the skills you learn enable you to work in the following subjects

Automotive Electronics, Image Processing, Voice Recognition, Digital Communications, Automated Manufacturing, Design of Circuits and Chips, Air-Traffic Control Systems, Energy Control Systems, Robotics, Electromedical Equipment, Publishing, LAN (Local Area Networks), Banking Systems, Power System Analysis.

There are endless possibilities after graduating with this degree. I will be attending Polytechnic University next year while majoring in computer engineering. The starting salary for this profession is from fifty five to sixty thousand dollars a year, and you can work your way up to a six figure yearly income.

Another great thing about this profession is that while you work for whatever company youre working for, you can go to seminars which teach you all about the new updates in this field so youre never left behind as technological advances are being made. These seminars keep you up to date on whats going on in your field which enables you to better serve the company youre working for, and leads to other great money making opportunities.

What do I mean when I say other great money making opportunities. Well, after graduating and getting settled in a job, you would think thats all there is to it and all you could do is try and work your way up in the company youre working at. Yes, that is true, but there are other ways to make more money than just working for your job. Computer Engineers have a broad knowledge in many computer and technological fields. This means that while you work from Monday to Friday, which would be your regular job, you can work on your own or with a couple of friends on the weekends for some extra cash. Many professionals in this field do that. For example, say a school just got 100 new computers for their students and they wish to connect these computers to the ones they already had, meaning that they want these computers to be in the same network as the ones that they already had. This would make the school have one big network and make it easier for everyone to work together instead of having two networks and work separately. This kind of job will take ten to fourteen days but can earn you up to seventy five thousand dollars in that period of time. Now if you have two partners working with you, then you divide the amount of money equally. Its just extra money that you can make on your spare time.

This is a tough career to follow because there is a lot of work involved and a lot of sacrifices to be made in order to excel at this, but the compensation once you achieved this goal is very rewarding.
