Iago is not simply a man of deceitful action he is an artist. Comment

In a infamous court hearing, a lawyer once asked "If you pay to go and watch unclothed people as art why should one deem it wrong to do the same with 'pornography', Isn't that a form of art?" The lawyer silenced everyone with this question and went on to win the case for a photographer who earned himself a reputation of making normal pornography look like something out of an amateurs box. Artistry has come a long way. From Leonardo to Shakespeare there is certainly one thing that they all possess and that is their eloquent 'genius'. What each of those geniuses chose to create is another story.

William Shakespeare is known for his profound characters. One such character is Iago who is found in his tragic play, Othello. The outworking of Iagos 'master plan' leads to the deaths of his master Othello and his wife Desdemona as well a pawn named Roderigo. This 'honest Iago' even goes to the horrid extent to kill his own wife Emilia all through trickery, double-crossing and luck. Many claim that because Iago had been so successful he is not merely deceitful but also an artist.

One may claim that Iago was amoral. He either had no moral principles or chose not to live by it. Someone with the inability to ride above guilt wouldn't be likely to be able to deceive everyone around him like he had. Iago kills his wife when she becomes a stumbling block to his plan, uses Roderigo to "line his coat", tries to kill Cassio and attempts to destroy Othello. Even when faced with the deaths of three people he seems to show no remorse as he denies to give reason for his disobedience to Othello saying, " I never will speak a word."

Cheap Custom Essays on Iago is not simply a man of deceitful action he is an artist. Comment

Iago is smart. He is an expert judge of people and their characters and uses this to his advantage. Roderigo makes an excellent example, as Iago knows he is in love with Desdemona. By playing on his hopes Iago uses Roderigo a 'fool' as his "purse" and continues to exploit him to forward his other goals. Iago is an opportunist who thinks quickly. When Cassio takes hold of Desdemona's hands before the arrival of Othello he says, "with as little a web as this will I ensnare a great fly as Cassio." Iago uses to opportunity in his plan to fool Othello into suspecting Cassio of sleeping with his wife. His cunning and craftiness make him a even more dangerous villain.

None can deny that Iago was deceitful. He would always tell the characters one of two things exactly what they want to hear or the exact opposite in order to make it easier for them to succumb to his constraints. An example can be found where Iago indirectly instigated a fight between Cassio and Roderigo, but still feigned reluctance to accuse Cassio in order to earn his trust saying that I should rather have this tongue cut from my mouth than it should do offence to Michael Cassio. Yet I persuade myself, to speak the truth. Cassio even believes him as even he refers to the cunning Iago as 'honest' after he advises Cassio to seek Desdemona's help to earn back his reputation. Iago advised him knowing all too well how he was going to use the moment to plant the seed of doubt in Othellos mind.

The manner in which Iago manages to manipulate those around him may be described as brilliant. If an artist creates a work of art, then Iago creates destruction. Is destruction really a work of art? The answer is yes. His skilful mastery over his victims lives can be compared to that of a devil who destroys the lives of his victim and that of a skilful artist who decides on the fates of his characters. But the bottom line is that destruction shouldn't be applauded. This work of art is ugly. Anything that costs the lives of people has nothing beautiful about it.

Character of Iago is not 'simply' a man of deceitful action. He is an artist and amoral genius who unfortunately chose to use his talent for the destruction of those around him only to be himself consumed by it in the end. When Iago refused to speak at the end of the play its certainly not out of fear but because his masterpiece is finished. His creation is hideous for even "judgement cannot cure it".

Much has happened in American history since 1. Throughout all those seventy years the United States has witnessed great developments of its society and economy and has also experienced great transformations. The connections between corporations and science and engineering establishments, credit cards and finally Reaganomics are the ones that I find the most important. All of them might be united by a common theme of boosting economic growth and promoting free market economy.

The development of big business gave new order to American society and economy. Although it brought deskilled workers, low standards of work and work relations that Porter calls in The Rise of Big Business, 'the drive system', corporations had also a positive influence on American economy. The big business connections with science and engineering establishments gave boost to 'research and development of new products and processes'.¹ Different firms, such as mentioned by Porter, General Electric, AT&T, Du Pont, Eastman Kodak and many others developed their R&D departments. Corporations were constantly developing and enhancing their products and services so they could launch their high quality products to the market. So the customers could find a wide range of goods, spend their money and consequently make the economy tick faster. But to make R&D working the firms needed well educated and trained professionals to run the departments. Hence the universities got involved in the connections with corporations. 'First true research and development laboratory in the United States, that of General Electric'² pioneered in the emergence of research and graduate studies programs at universities. Education system could meet the needs of the corporations, so the needs of the market. Trained people could find themselves as useful in the economic growth. As the century progressed the corporations strengthen their ties with the science, engineering establishments and universities. And later in that century another connection took part in the market development, that of military industrial complex.

As Hughes noted in American Genesis, it stimulated the growth of such large scale-technological systems as wireless telegraphy and telephony. The development of new products enhanced the competition in the market and that consequently led to the growth of economy.

Not only is the wide range of products important for the market development, but also an easy access to money. American banks found a solution to that problem by issuing credit cards. The two dominant national organizations, as Mandell calls them in The Credit Card Industry A History, BankAmericard and Master Charge were trying to beat each other in fight for the clients. The bigger number of credit cards in circulation means bigger profits. The banks make money by lending it. And with a credit card people do not have to worry about paying for something. One pays 1$ with a credit card today instead of paying for the same product 1.50$ next year. As Mandell noted, credit cards once reserved for only businesspeople and the wealthy, in the 170s were carried by nearly half of all American consumers. Banks were mailing their credit cards to their customers. The number of cards in circulation increased substantially. Most banks firstly concentrated on 'upper middle income Americans'.³ This group thought to be the most creditworthy. And in fact it was. They were paying their interests on time, and banks did not get their interest income. Banks were forced to aim their strategy at lower income groups. Also college students, seen as future businesspeople or professionals, as Mandell writes, got their free credit cards. Banks were landing the money, the society was using its credit, buying goods, the companies offering the products and free market could thrive.

Since there was no need to worry about buying a product one day and paying for it another day, people could have more. Americans got used to the fact of being able to afford whatever they want, and they would not settle for less. After the oil embargo of 17 and the economic slump it would seem American society would have to do with less. President R. Reagan kept the standards of American life. He believed in free market and self-regulation. Reagan's administration introduced De Regulation; the regulatory offices were taken off so free market could develop. Taxes were radically cut. And the process of converting government enterprises into privately owned companies implemented. So transportation, cleaning services, even police forces were open to privatization. In 18 the unemployment decreased and the economy regained much of its energy. The market was full of different goods and a service with varied prices, the competition was fighting the battle for the customers. Apart from Reagan's sheer economic tactics; his military build up and SDI could be argued to have caused the economic slump in Russia and the end of the Cold War, which also had a positive influence on American free market economy. Even if not for long, as in 187 economy slumped again, Reaganomics stimulated the growth of American economy.

The growth is the fundamental goal of many economic systems. In theory, the whole system is wanted to expand and provide more businesses, more jobs, and more wealth for everyone. In practice, however, it is difficult to achieve the economic growth. All of the three developments, connections of corporation, credit cards and Reaganomics stimulated this growth in different aspects. Corporations mainly through connections with high technology industries, credit cards through the ability of customers to revolve the money in the market, Reaganomics through stimulating the economy in the crisis. All of them promoted rules of free market economy and that allowed the economy to grow.

William Goldings novel, Lord of the Flies, is a look into the dark side of humanity. In response to this work I decided to create a mask. This mask symbolizes the very aspect of human nature that is analyzed in the novel. This mask was made to resemble the face paint worn by Jacks tribe of savages. Under these disguises, the boys developed new personas with which they were free from all guilt and responsibility. The two boys whose transformations are most obvious are Jack and Roger.

Jack Merridews character is one that represents the evil of human nature. Although present since the beginning, his identity as a power-hungry dictator does not fully begin to surface until he first hides his face under a mask of paint. The effect this has on him is revealed in chapter eight when he stood naked in front of Ralphs assembly and was safe from shame or self-consciousness behind the mask of paint and could look at each of them in turn(p. 140). Jack is clearly shown to be power-mad at the feast in chapter nine. He is referred to as the chief and is painted and garlanded… like an idol(p. 14). He is described as having power lay in the brown swell of his forearms authority sat on his shoulder and chattered in his ear like an ape(p. 150). However, Jack is not the only evil boy on the island.

In chapter four Rogers characteristics as a bully surface as he throws rocks at a child named Henry. It was the constraints of civilization that forced him to throw the rocks to miss; there was a space around Henry… into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Rogers arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins(p. 6). Yet, between then and chapter eleven, with the dawning of the face paint and the increased savagery of Jacks tribe, this taboo was forgotten. When Roger released the boulder toward Piggy, it was not intended to miss. Roger was able to escape guilt for the killing of Piggy by seeing him as a bag of fat instead of a real person. After that, his reputation as the hangman is solidified. Unlike Jack, whose cruelty comes from his love of the hunt and thirst for power, Roger merely enjoys inflicting pain onto others.

The masks of paint worn by Jack and Roger can be interpreted as covering up their true innocent selves and making them evil, or perhaps the masks served to reveal them for who they truly are… savages. But if that is the case, then what do we hide under the masks civilization has placed on us? Perhaps we all carry with us varying degrees of evil, just waiting to be revealed!

Act 1

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark meet.

Meriwether Lewis says to Clark As you know I used to be neighbors with our newly elected President Thomas Jefferson. Since becoming President, he has asked me to be his secretary. One of the things that he needs to know is whether or not there is a direct water route to the Pacific Ocean. He is asked me to set up an expedition to find if a water route exists.

I would like you to command the expedition together with me. I dont know long it will take. It might take years, there might be dangerous Indian tribes that we run into, and we may even get lost but the bottom line it that I think it will be a great adventure.

Clark replies I feel honored to that youve asked me to accompany you on this journey. Im not sure if Im making the right choice but my previous job in the military has ended and I would like to change my life so Im going to accept and I will go with you on this great adventure.

The two shake hands.

Act two

Meriwether Lewis and Sacagawea approached Clark. Lewis says Clark I would like you to meet Sacagawea, she is the wife of Toussaint. She is a Shoshoni Indian. I think it would be good if they accompanied us on this journey. Since she is an Indian she will be able to translate for us. This is her young son John.

Clark says welcome, Sacagawea, I think you will be a great asset to us.

Clark then greets the baby.

Hello little fellow, I think I will call you Pomp since you are such a cute little boy.

Act three

It is night time. Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea are sitting around a campfire.

Clark says this land is so beautiful but I can hardly believe my eyes. And the animals are amazing. I think Ive seen 10,000 buffalo today.

Lewis says yes it is beautiful here but Im not so fond of all the animals. Ive been chased by three different grizzly bears today. They keep running at me even when Im shooting at them.

Clark chuckles and says yes Lewis, they do seem to like you lot.

Sacagawea says I am from this land. It is my home. We believe this land has been blessed.

Clark says why did you leave here?

Sacagawea said, I was kidnapped away from my tribe and sold for money. Luckily I then escaped and went on to meet my husband. I hope to find the rest of my tribe someday.

Act four

Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea are eating hungrily.

Lewis says Clark we nearly starved crossing those mountains. Its obvious to me there is no water route through the Rocky Mountains. We must get to the Pacific Ocean. The only way were going to be able to cross is on horses.

Clark says how you think we will get horses? I dont think we have enough money left to buy any from the Indians.

Sacagawea says as you know, we met members of my old tribe today. They are taking me to meet the new chief of the tribe. Maybe we will be able to get horses from them. Lets go.

Act five

Sacagawea, Lewis and Clark enter the teepee of the Indian chief. The Indian chief says welcome.

Sacagawea says thank you for inviting us and seeing us today.

Sacagawea says, I cant believe it, you're my brother! Its me Sacagawea!

The Chief says Sacagawea, I cant believe its you! Weve missed you so much!

They both hug each other.

The chief says Sacagawea I want to spend some time talking with you and catching up but first tell me why youre here with these two men.

Sacagawea says we must obtain horses in order to cross the mountains. We have some things to trade with you but we do not have enough to pay for the cost of all the horses that we need.

The chief says I will do everything within my power to help you. Trade what you can and I will give you the remaining horses. Spend a few days here refreshing yourselves. Now Sacagawea, let us go and talk together just you and I.

ACT 6

Lewis and Clark are alone together.

Lewis says Clark, it has taken as nearly two and a half years to reach the Pacific Ocean and return. We know now theres no water route across the Rocky Mountains. And while finding that out we have covered and explored some of the most beautiful lands weve ever seen.

Clark says this was more of an adventure than I knew. But every moment has been worthwhile. Thank you for including me on the best adventure of my life.

Lewis says my good friend, thank you for coming with me. I couldnt have done it without you.

The two friends walk off arm in arm together.

POP ART

A NEW ART MOVEMENT

Pop Art is an art movement that appeared in the fifties as a reaction against "Abstract Expressionism"(considered as an accepted style). It referred to some artists' interest in the images of mass media, advertising, comics, and consumer products. Pop Art brought art back to materiality and popular culture as it eliminated the difference between good and bad taste, and fine art and commercial art techniques (Pop Art 07/1/00). Lawrence Alloway first used the term Pop Art (as popular art) in a 158 issue of "Architectural Digest" to describe the paintings that celebrate post-war consumerism, defy the psychology of "Abstract Expressionism", and worship the god of materialism (Pop Art 1/1/00). Pop Art started in the fifties in Britain (it became a piece of the image of "swinging London") and reached its top in the U.S. (New York in particular) in the sixties. Two leading Pop artists are David Hockney and Andy Warhol.

"British Pop Art arose of a new understanding of contemporary life. It was intellectual, interdisciplinary, and programmatic in character". During the early fifties, British artists and intellectuals started to conceive that their culture was more and more fixed by social change, new technology, and mass media, and that this movement was inducing the enhanced "Americanization" of Europe (Steven Henry

Madoff). This cultural alteration was not manifested in the self-contained, expressive, abstract-figurative art of the older generation of British artists Henry Moore or Graham Sutherland for example.

Actually, the Independent Group was assembled in 15 in order to have casual conversations and cultural events at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. The subjects brought to issue at their reunions can be listed as follows the amplification of artistic techniques beyond traditional forms of representation, action painting, helicopter and car-body design, nuclear biology, mass media and municipal culture, folk culture, the cinema, pop music, and the theories of Marshall McLuhan. These topics were very distant from the concerns of the cultural establishment of that time.

The Pop Art movement expanded fast in Britain, among the younger generation and in geographical terms, and it is because of young painters' influence that British Pop Art reacted with much potency to American Pop Art. This period of British Pop Art prospered and made its first public presence at the exhibition "Young Contemporaries" in 160 the first exhibition to provide a general survey of the new art movement (Pop Art in Britain). British Pop Art eliminated the traditional limits of artistic development to walk on the trail of self-analysis within a consciously perceived and reflected present-day existence.

On another hand, when American Art stood up with its newly found self-confidence against European influence in the fifties, American Pop Art was born. Actually Americanism itself catered the initial push the idea of progress, the media

industry and the star-cult were experiencing a boom in Hollywood and, more especially, in New York, the cultural center of the U.S.A..

American Pop Art developed through different phases. The first was the pre-pop phase, in which painters abandoned "Abstract Expressionism". The second was the heyday of Pop Art, in which a large number of important artists, whose work was partly based on commercial art, design and poster painting, emerged. With the sponsorship of certain committed and experimental New York galleries, this phase of Pop Art quickly achieved success and recognition as a new art movement. During the third phase (the middle of the sixties), American Pop Art was widely known it expanded from New York to the West Coast and Canada, and later to Europe and Britain which had its own Pop Art for some time. The last phase featured a harsh, radical realism, largely of American origin, whose subject was urban social relations.

The earliest advocates of American Pop Art outside New York were from California. Los Angeles was the center of West Coast Pop, a city whose sub-culture not only had an enduring influence on this variant of Pop Art, but which was later to conquer the world in the form of the hippie culture and lifestyle (Pop Art in America).

One of the leading Pop artists is David Hockney (17- ). British painter, draughtsman, printmaker, photographer, and designer. As a student, Hockney lead an astonishing prize-winning path at the Royal College of Art, then realized international success during his mid twenties. Since then, he stabilized himself as by far the most famous British artist of his generation. His exceptional achievement has not been built only on the flair, wit, and versatility of his work, but on his colorful personality too,

which has lead him to become a known figure even to people who are not really attached to art (Hockney, David).

Although he never accepted the label of leading pop artist, Hockney gained this reputation because of his early paintings that are jockey in mood. During the late sixties he moved to a weightier, more traditionally representational manner in which he painted some splendid portraits (Hockney spent a lot of time in the U.S.A. and the Californian swimming pool has been one of his favorite subjects). In the seventies he achieved his peak as a stage designer and moved during the eighties to photography. Hockney is a perceptive commentator on art he published a book on his own work in 176, "David Hockney by David Hockney" (David Hockney).

Another leading pop artist is Andy Warhol (10-187). Born in Pittsburgh, Warhol got his high school diploma in 145 (he studied pictorial design and art history, sociology and psychology). In 14, he met Philip Pearlstein and moved to New York with him, where he worked for "Vogue" and "Harper's Bazaar". In 15, he had his first one-man exhibition at the Hugo Gallery, New York, and he moved after that into a house in Lexington Avenue with his mother (and several cats!). In 156, Warhol had an individual exhibition of his drawings for "Boy Book" at the Bodley Gallery, and he traveled in Europe and Asia. In 16, he produced his silkscreen prints on canvas of dollar notes, Campbell's Soup cans, Marilyn Monroe…

Between 16 and 164 Warhol produced over two thousand pictures in his "Factory" as well as he made two movies "Sleep" and "Empire" in 16. He also produced the first record of the rock band the Velvet Underground in 167 and he made several films with them.

In July 168 Valerie Solanis, the only member of S.C.U.M. (the Society for Cutting Up Men), shot down Warhol (he was dangerously wounded). In 175 Warhol

published the first edition of his book "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol"(from A to B and Back Again). In 180 he became manager of the cable television station "Andy Warhol's T.V.". In 181 the exhibition Andy Warhol-Paintings 161-168 was held at the Kestner-Gesselschaft, Hanover, and at the Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich. He made pictures of disasters between 18 and 185, and portraits of Lenin and self-portraits in 186. His will provided for an endowment fund for the patronage of art (Andy Warhol).

Pop Art made art accessible for everyone, and opened new dimensions in art it reflects the twentieth century man's vision of himself, getting more and more into the materiality of things.

An all-water route between Europe and Asia would have made shipping and trading goods a much less expensive venture. If the original price of a jewel in Asia was five dollars, the labor in moving it over thousands of miles of treacherous terrain might raise the price to 15 dollars. If an all-water route were to be found, it would make the traveling of those thousands of miles much cheaper.

The early European's motives for exploration were many finding of a Northwest passage, finding new territory to colonize, gold, and the simple yearning to know what is out there that they have not seen before. Man's reasons for exploring outer space and the planets within our solar system are much the same finding a new planet to colonize, the search for new life, and the desire to see new frontiers.
