Creon

Throughout the course of history, there have been many kings and leaders ruling the great ancient cities. Sometimes these rulers would be heartless and do anything to make things go there way, and other times you get a ruler who is proud to be in control and listens to his people. That is not the case in the play Antigone. Here, we have a man named Creon who is put into power because he is the next family member in line to do so. He tries to be a good ruler and thinks he is doing everything right, but problems come across. He tries to fix them with his power but the more power he uses the worse it gets.

Creon is much similar, in a way, to his preceding rulers. He came from a family life that was a little distorted. In is past, there have been murders in his family and incest, but that was unknown. He grew up knowing only high powered people because of his close family. That is what made Creon who he is today. He thought he would be different from his other family members when they ruled, by having a different way of order. But unfortunately that did not work because in the end not only did he ruin his life but many others too.

Throughout this play, you get a better understanding of Creons principles. As it progressing you come to find out just how cruel and unthoughtful he can really be. He believes that he is of the highest power. He is in control and everyone should obey him. Back in that time, they thought of women as lower class and that they can never stand up to a man. That is why when Antigone actually confessed, Creon was quick to sentence her to death so that no one would think that a women had beaten him. As Creon said on page 5, lines 51-5 "Go down below and love, / if love you must-love the dead! While I'm alive, / no woman is going to lord it over me."

If Creon were actually real, he would need to learn one thing think before you act. When he proposed the idea to not give Polynices a proper burial people started to turn against him, especially those like Antigone who thought it was a very bad idea. Then Creon made it even worse by announcing that if someone should try to bury the body they shall be put to death. He did not know then, but his bad judgment was going to ruin his life. When he found that Antigone buried the body, even though she was his niece, he still sentenced her to death. The only reason for this was so that he would not look as though a woman has overpowered him in front of his kingdom. Soon, his bad judgments finally caught up to him. He realized what he did, sentencing his sons' fianc' to death. On page 56, lines 18-10 Creon finally gives in "Oh it's hard/ giving up the hearts desire…but I will do it-/ no more fighting a losing battle with necessity."

I believe that Creon being in power was wrong. He became cocky and knew that he had power to do whatever. But in the end people like him always do something wrong. After Antigone killed herself, his son Haemon killed himself because he lost the woman he loved. Soon after that, Creons wife killed herself realizing what her husband had become and what he did to her son. So in the end Creons principles and judgments really turned against him and made his life torture.
