In this essay Lawrence wrote about a topic that was very important to him. This essay is about racism, hate speech, the first amendment and how they all work together. He stresses the importance of our first amendment rights and that it would be a very bad thing if we lost them. He also seems to think their should be limits to this in regards to hate speech. Lawrence explains that racial slurs and hate speech should not be covered under the first amendment because it isn't a freedom to intentional scare, hurt, belittle, and demean other people. He believes that hatred and racism do not fall under the blanket of freedoms that the first amendment allows.

Lawrence has a lot of good points in his essay. He makes valid arguments against racist slurs and hate speech to not be included in our first amendment rights. He also understand what it would lead to if the government started to regulate our freedoms and telling us how far they extended. Lawrence knows that if the government took away some of the freedoms we have in our freedom of speech that it could go to far and could possibly be a bad thing. I think Lawrence would be ok if racial slurs and hate were not afforded to people.

I think that this essay was well written and I agree with most of all what he says. I don't think we should put limits on our freedom of speech as long as we aren't violating other people's freedoms. If the Ku Klux Klan wants to hold a rally or a parade I believe that is their right and if they chose to do so, then no one should be able to stop them. As long as people are non-violent and civil about their protests and speech. When someone else's freedoms begin to trample on yours though, that is different story.

I am from Topeka where the first amendment is talked about regularly. There is a local hate group who protests the homosexual lifestyle and speaks out against it on a daily basis. They hold up disgusting, gross, and insulting signs to everyone they see. Even if you do not agree with someone's message though doesn't give you the right to take away their freedom to express their ideas and opinions. If we start regulating speech and thought where does it end? How do we as a society decide what is wrong and what is right? There are many different moral standards and ways of life in America and coming to a concensus on what is right and what is wrong would be a difficult thing to do. If you do not like a person or groups message then you have the freedom to protest against them and their message. You do not have to listen to their ideas if you do not want to. As long as what they do is in public and you can avoid them, their rights should be upheld the same as yours.
