Analysis of Kate Chopin’s Desiree’s Baby & The Awakening

Both of Kate Chopin’s works focus on the choices and pressures that both of the main characters endure throughout the stories. Both women were powerless against their male counterparts. Chopin delves deep into the personal thoughts and desires of her characters, especially married women.

Chopin investigates the social perceptions of women in the 1th Century. She challenged the chauvinistic views of society during the time period. Her stories were critically disapproved by the public.

Chopin’s genre of writing focuses on naturalism. “The basic premise of naturalism is that the thoughts, emotions, and actions of men and women are determined by forces beyond their control nature, heredity, and social forces” (Barton & Hudson, 17, p. 117). A main theme in both works is the main characters becoming victims of faith.

In Desiree’s Baby, Desiree is asked to take her child and leave her husband Armand. Armand no longer loves his wife, because their son is not white. As Desiree explains the situation to her mother in a letter, she is lost and confused. “My mother, they tell me I am not white. Armand told me I am not white” (Chopin 6). Without Desiree knowing, it is Armand who is the cause of her son being black.

From society’s perception of what is deemed appropriate, Armand must get rid of his wife and child even though he is the cause of the problem. In a note, Armand’s mother wrote that she never wanted her son to know that he was of African American heritage. “I thank the good God for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that … he belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery” (Chopin 68).

Both women are owned by their husbands and seen as property. In The Awakening, when Leonce discovers that his wife Edna was moving out of their family’s house, he thought of how society would perceive him. “He [Leonce] was simply thinking of his financial integrity … It might do incalculable mischief to his business prospects” (Chopin 441). Mr. Pontellier’s main concern is his social status. In Desiree’s Baby, when Armand discovers that his child is black, he blames is wife and only cares about his family. “Moreover he [Armand] no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name” (Chopin 6).

In Chopin’s two stories, both women are destined for death. Both wives cannot go on living in the male-dominated society that they live in. After being insulted and thrown out of her home, Desiree loses control and tries to defend herself from her husband’s false allegations. “You must know it is not true. I shall die. I must die. I cannot be so unhappy, and live” (Chopin 67). Desiree has lost the only love of her life and cannot go on living and takes her son to the river and does not return.

In The Awakening, Edna wants to be unchained from her husband’s name and wants to live in freedom and choose her own way of life. Robert, her lover in the story, asks Edna to leave her husband and be with him. Unfortunately, Edna knew that she would feel alone once again and be under another man’s control. As a result, Edna drowns herself in the ocean. Both women look towards water to free themselves from their possessors.

After reading the two works and reading more background knowledge of Kate Chopin, I agree that both women were victims of faith. Many critics perceive the women as the only victims in the stories. I would like to challenge this point of view and look more deeply into the minds of the husbands, especially Leonce.

In Desiree’s Baby, Armand fell deeply in love with Desiree the moment his eyes laid upon her. “The passion that awoke in him that day … swept along like an avalanche, or like a prairie fire, or like any thing that drives headlong over all obstacles” (Chopin 65). Marrying Desiree and having a child softened Leone. In the beginning, he did not care that Desiree was abandoned by her mother. He would was honored to give her his family name.

Armand, like his wife, is also a victim of faith. He loved his family and was eager to start a new life. Unfortunately, faith, along with societal pressures, caused him to get rid of his family in order to save face. In the beginning of the story, the reader sees hope and unconditional love ever-present in the Aubigny household. Faith destroys Armand’s family and causes the death of Desiree and their child.

In The Awakening, Leonce deeply loved his wife even though she expressed little interest in him. “He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him …” (Chopin 7). Also, Edna showed little interest in her two children which upset her husband. “In short, Mrs. Pontellier was not a mother-woman” (Chopin 74). Other women in the story thought Leone was the greatest husband. Unfortunately, Edna did not agree and wanted her freedom to do what she wished and see other men.

What surprised me while reading The Awakening was how Edna idolized Adele Ratignolle. Adele was the typical housewife who loved her children and worshiped her husband. Edna listeners to her advice throughout the story and treats her with deep respect. Even knowing of her infidelities, Leonce still loved his wife. From the beginning, Edna did not love her husband. “Her marriage to Leonce Pontellier was purely an accident, in the respect resembling many other marriages which masquerade as the decrees of Fate” (Chopin 8). As a reader, I see Edna’s selfishness and distaste for her entire family.

Her husband respected Edna’s choices even though he wished otherwise. His wife interacted with other men and moved into her own house without his wishes. At the end of the novel, Edna only sees death as a way to free herself from her family and does not care that he is leaving her two children. Edna had once told Madame Rattignolle that she would never sacrifice herself for her children, or for any one” (Chopin 404).

Throughout the story, Edna vacillates back and forth in the feelings she expresses. She loves Robert, then she loves Alcee. She hates her life, but respects her husband. What mindset is Edna dealing with? “It sometimes entered Mr. Pontellier’s mind to wonder if his wife were not growing a little unbalanced mentally” (Chopin 41).

In the end, Edna chooses to be free from any man’s allegiance, either her husband or Robert, and drowns herself in the ocean. “… All sense of reality had gone out of her life; she had abandoned herself to Fate” (Chopin 450). She gives up on life and her family.

Edna did possess a caring husband, two healthy children, and the freedom to do whatever she wished. Chopin makes Edna look like a prisoner in her own home, controlled by her family and held to the highest standards from society. She does not use rational thinking and cares little to the consequences of her actions. Chopin’s ending is predictable and shows how Edna is not a role model for women to look up to. She wanted her freedom at the consequence of her losing her family. Edna commits adultery with her lovers, disrespects her husband, and showed little interest in raising her children.

When presenting this story to my students to read, I will develop a lesson plan where the students chose to rewrite the ending to The Awakening. I will give the students the following choices

1. Edna can be with her lover (in any manner she wishes).

. Edna can be married (to a man of her choice).

. Edna can live alone.

The students will select one of the three choices and create their own ending. Then, as a group, each student will read their endings to the rest of the class. I will highlight that in # 1, Edna would once again become a man’s possession. In # , Edna would still be in a “traditional marriage” no matter if she was with Robert or someone else. In # , Edna would be alone like Madame Reisz, which she did not want to be like. This lesson will allow the students to critically analyze the themes and issues that arise in the story. It will also serve as valuable assessment tool for me to know that my students understand the concepts and lessons from the readings.

What would you do if your mother was terminally ill and asked you to assist her in killing herself because she could no longer take the pain and suffering? She is going to die either way, so why not save her the pain and give her, her last dying wish. Assisting her in suicide, which is what the world calls euthanasia could help her reach her last desire in life. In the United States and most parts of the world Euthanasia is illegal which is absolutely wrong.

Assisting a person in suicide will put them out of misery. We could alleviate their uncomfortable bedridden life and grant them freedom from pain. Unfortunately today, we legally would not be able to give that person the last thing they would ever want in life. We could not fulfill their dying wishes because euthanasia or assisted suicide is looked upon as being selfish and immoral. Why should one be able to choose when to die if one was not able to choose when to be born? A person was not able to choose when to be born yes, but one’s parents were able to choose when to bring life onto this planet. There is no way possible a person could choose when they should have been brought to life because they were not living at that moment to make that decision. Someone else though was able to determine life for that person. Why is it that people are able to determine when to bring other life onto this planet, but it is immoral and selfish when one wants to determine when they end their own life? It is an individual’s own life and own choices. In order for someone to go to the extreme of wanting to end their life they must be going through some excruciating pain. So why let them suffer in pain waiting to die when we could give them the next best thing which is an end to their burden. It should be up to the person not the government whether or not that person has to live through the pain and suffering or can if chosen end their own life. If euthanasia is legalized we could give our loved ones their last dying wish and let them die with dignity instead of pain and suffering. We could give them what they truly want if they truly want it. We could give them an end to the pain, and an end to the drawn out conclusion of their life.

Not only is euthanasia an end to one’s pain and suffering it is also an end to the burden on the family members and taxpayers who are supporting a lost cause. A person who is terminally ill will end up dying one way or another. So if that person is willing to put an end to their suffering and give up on life, why not let them do so? It would save their family members a fortune on health care costs, and it would take the worry away knowing that their family member went peacefully. A family, today, with out legalized euthanasia would be paying massive amounts of money to support some one who will end up dying and who wants to die anyway. Why should we pay money to hospitals by supporting and keeping someone alive who has no chance, and no longer wants to live? If euthanasia was legalized we could put the money toward something worth spending it on. It is not worth spending the money on health care for someone who does not want it. One of the possible reasons euthanasia has not been legalized yet, is because if it were some doctors would be out of jobs. If euthanasia were legalized these doctors and hospital’s would not be able to continue to drain the family members pockets any longer. Therefore the hospitals profits would drop. The longer they keep someone alive in their care, the longer they continue to put money into their own pockets. What we need to do is legalize Euthanasia and give a person the right to determine his or her own fate. If the person wants to wait it out and live out the disease, then let them. If that person and their family members can come up with the money to do that, then so be it. But if a person does not want to live out the disease any longer, and the person and their family members cannot come up with the money to support them then give that person the right to do what they want.

Every American at this time has a common law and constitutional right to refuse unwanted medical treatment and equipment. Many believe that this right to die should extend to aid in dying or euthanasia for the terminally ill at their request. Why is it that a person can refuse life sustaining medical treatment and end their life, but a person cannot ask a doctor to aid them in ending their life? It is not right that a person can end their life one way but cannot the other. This raises the question should a person who is no longer mentally capable be able to make such a decision? If euthanasia is legalized everyone should have a statement in their will whether or not they want to live out the disease and suffer in pain or end the life before the disease does. The person in this will should describe in detail what they want done if a disease should go to this extent. This would solve that problem and clarify the wants of that person. It would be somewhat of a will for your life.

As of today we have the right to choose whether or not we want life sustaining treatment, but we do not have the right to choose to have someone aid in our death for purposes of pain, suffering, and dignity. A person should have the right to choose euthanasia because it could save that person and their family the cost of unnecessary health care. We could also give people the comfort of knowing that if they want something they can receive it. If euthanasia was legalized we could put an end to the suffering of terminal illness if chosen, and if not at the mental ability to choose it should be written in a type of will for that person. Every person should have these rights, but as of now we do not. Therefore there is definitely something wrong with this picture, and we are the only ones who can change that.

The development of dance changed with the development of dance costumes. Royal Patronage, fashions and professional dancers played important roles in the development of Dance and Dancewear. Ballet was initially a combination of professional acrobatics and folk dance with an aristocratic grace performed for the leisure of the monarchy.

Men’s clothing wasn’t very practical, they wore heavily brocaded tunics and coats which were very stiff and breeches limited movement of the knees. Heavy wigs and swords to the waist reduced movement while small heeled shoes disabled the pointe of feet. Woman wore clothing even more unsuitable for dancing, stiff lacy long sleeved bodices and panniered skirts. This shows us that the importance of dancewear should not be overlooked because dancers were less skilled then they are now and so were not bothered by bulky costumes.

During the early 1700s, fashions in ballet costumes began to change. The great dancer Marie Camargo shortened her ballet skirt to above her ankles, and removed the heels from her dancing slippers. Allowing her ankles on show meant full appreciation of intricate footwork and complex jumps. She believed that Dance “should be natural and expressive”. Ballet technique grew increasingly spectacular, and the skirts became shorter and shorter. This overcome the problem of wearing “caleons de precaution” (precautionary drawers) to keep their legs covered in the resulting whirls. Marie Salle further shocked audiences with the show of more skin, by discarding petticoats and replacing with a flimsy Muslim dress, and this I feel was very important in revolutionising the performance of dance in opera houses as it enabled the development of gliding leaps we see today which also attracted more audiences.

An innovating designer at the Paris Opera named Maillot overcome the heavy weight of these clothing by introducing tights. Believe it or not but these thin garments of nylon revolutionised the world of dance forever. Tights allowed a significant degree of freedom that dancers had never before experienced. Dances were no longer limited to simple elegant steps, but complex as well as dramatic athletic movement became possible, allowing ballet to move far beyond its previous limited boundaries.

The bell-shaped Romantic dress of the mid-1800s gave way to the famous tutu at the end of the 1th century. Connoisseurs of ballet, the Russians also wanted to see the new technical feats and fancy footwork of their ballerinas. The new long, floppy, 16 layer tutus reached to the knee and allowed the female dancers much greater mobility in such technically demanding ballets as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Paquita. George Balanchines athletic choreography led to the creation of the shorter powder-puff tutu that is worn in Symphony . These tutus allow the entire leg to be seen and so today, the standard ballet skirt, the tutu, ends well above the knees.

To enhance the image of the ballerina as light and elusive, the Pointe shoe was introduced, enabling women to dance on the tips of their toes. The tips of these shoes are made with layers of cloth and glue, the layers strengthen the tips, giving the dancer support. Each dancer fitted with the Pointe shoes must have good strong feet leg muscles, good placement and a correct ballet technique. Without these shoes imagine how uncomfortable it was when early 1800s dancers wore small heeled firm shoes that they would again use as everyday shoes?

Modern dancers wore the new leotard for their practice wear. Invented by the trapeze artist Jules Leotard, the original leotard consisted of a close-fitting suit of knitted jersey, which reached to the wrists and ankles; the womans version came with a short fringed skirt. Today, the leotard is the accepted uniform of dancers around the world and is designed in many attractive patterns, colours and materials.

Bare legs were never very popular with dancers for practice sessions since the leg muscles must be kept continually warm. Today dancers wear not only leotards and tights but also wool leg warmers and/or plastic pants over their tights in order to keep their muscles warm and supple.

The best ballet costumes are light and simple. They show all the lines of the body and never interfere with the dancers movements. Even in historical ballets, freedom of movement is more important than costumes that look exactly like the clothing of the time. I’m sure you all will agree that dancewear is a important part of the development in Ballet as it has enabled great dancers and choreographers to create techniques that make it look as though heavenly figures glide effortlessly across the stage and open up new possibilities in Ballet as an art form.

Should the Victorian Police allow a Muslim Woman to the police force?

In my opinion I think that Maha, becoming the country’s first traditional Muslim policewoman, would be a great aspect of the Arabic community seeing that she would like working in multicultural affairs or domestic violence in their community. It’s wonderful to see that the police force is giving her that opportunity to become a policewoman and to still dress in the Muslim tradition and that only slight changes are to be made.

Abdul Safir,

St Kilda, Melbourne.

livepaperhelp.com

I think that having a Muslim policewoman isn’t such a bad idea but what I find very annoying is that she is allowed to wear the veil while on duty, and the only part of her body, which is allowed to be shown is her face. I mean if she wants to become a policewoman and wants to wear the Muslim traditional clothing, she should go back to where she came from.

I mean when an Australian goes to a Muslim country they have to be covered, and as far as I’m concerned Maha is living in Australia and she should not be allowed to wear the veil while she is on duty.

Joe Blo,

Westmeadows, Melbourne.

In my opinion I think that having a Muslim policewoman is totally out of the question. And not only that, but finding out that she to wants to have her head covered in the traditional “Hijab” and to pray at least once a shift is totally wrong. How could the Victorian police force accept her? I mean she can’t even go to a pre-intake swimming test without it being cleared of recruits so she could take the test alone. I’m usually not a racist person but I think that this issue is really an important and wrong decision, which has been made.

Kelly Jordan,

Brunswick, Melbourne.

In my opinion I think that it is of great pleasure to see a Muslim working for the police force. I myself am not religious but one thing that I want to say to Maha is, do your best and you can become whatever you want to be, and I’m sure that the country is very happy and pleased with you. Good Job. And I’ll be looking forward to seeing you around…lol.

Carlton, Melbourne.

Businesses of a half-decade ago laughed at the pioneers of a total quality management system. The basic idea of a total quality management system is to improve performance at all levels and all aspects of a business to maintain competitiveness in the market and gain customer satisfaction. There are many facets encompassed in a total quality management model, which is probably why the pioneers were ridiculed. But over time the total quality concept has emerged and proved it is what businesses of today need. Like a new sheriff in a small town, TQM redefined what quality means, how to achieve it, and how to measure it.

Traditional methods were needed and worked effectively in an era where employees took orders and manufacturing and production were the driving force of a business. With globalization and e-business on the frontier needs have changed, thus the need for total quality management to be implemented in all businesses of the new era.

Impact of Globalization

livepaperhelp.com

As companies venture beyond domestic borders and into the international arena total quality is a key to their success. The concept of globalization is to offer quality products at a competitive price to foreign customers. Without a quality product a company would not be competitive in foreign markets. Since customer satisfaction is a key element to the TQM model, it is important to understand what quality means to the various cultures of the global arena.

Since most companies today understand the importance of total quality many companies have set out to get a quality certification such as an ISO 000 certification. The importance of a quality certification is that it makes a company more competitive in the market they are involved in. One day a certification such as ISO 000 will become a minimum requirement for a business because as technology advances the need for flawless products will increase. Additionally, quality certifications will prove to customers that they are getting quality products.

Traditional vs. Quality

As discussed, the total quality concept focuses on increased customer satisfaction by continuing to improve the performance of all aspects of a company. A half century ago management laughed at this ideal focusing on only improving quality in key areas of the manufacturing process. Traditional style believed that quality could be increased if performance of research and development or production could be improved. When presented with the concept of total quality, the pioneers were ridiculed for their ideals. The concept of empowering employees and satisfying the customer were not top priorities in the traditional era.

One important element that is encompassed in the total quality concept is the six-sigma theory. Over the last half-decade increased volume and complexity of manufacturing has lead to the TQM model to be adopted by organizations. “Traditional…measured process performance in defective parts per hundred produced…with total quality the same measurement is thought of in parts per million” (Univ. of Phoenix, p. 0). In the latter 70’s management saw the need for total quality over the traditional method. Today TQM is a large part of an organizations success and is extended beyond the production or manufacturing aspect of a company. In large corporations all departments have adopted the ideals of total quality to improve performance of all levels.

Conclusion

The total quality concept is important for businesses to be successful in the future. Over time continued pressure on quality products will force businesses to adopt certifications proving they are adhering to the total quality concept. This will ultimately be a good thing for businesses because it will divide the successful from the unsuccessful. The reference to the TQM concept being compared to a new sheriff is even in the old west there was a time for change. The new sheriff would normally try to improve the quality of the town to make its’ residents safe and attract visitors by eliminating those that did not contribute to the town in a positive fashion. The same holds true for the total quality concept; improved quality will yield a better product and productivity of the employees will be enhanced at all levels in all departments.

Ralf Waldo Emerson, was born in Boston, and was the son of William Emerson, a minister of the First Church (Unitarian) of Boston, an American essayist and poet, and a leader of the philosophical movement of transcendentalism. Emerson was influenced by English romanticism, Neoplatonism, and Hinduism. Emerson is noted today for his skill in presenting his thoughts and beliefs eloquently and in poetic language. Nature is regarded today as Emerson’s most significant work, offering the essence of his philosophy of transcendentalism, the belief that regards the processes of reasoning as the key to the knowledge of reality. This idealist work opposed the popular Calvinist and materialist views of life at that time, while voicing a plea for freedom of the individual from artificial restraints. In many ways, Emerson’s thoughts have influenced the traditions and the everyday life of today’s society. The following explains the conflicts between Christianity and Emerson’s beliefs, and how some of Emerson’s thoughts are at the same time relevant to the conflicts in today’s society.

As the leader of the philosophical transcendentalism movement, Emerson taught and influenced the aspects of self-examination in celebration of individualism, while praising the beauties of nature and humankind. Because of these well-expanded, self-centered beliefs, he concluded that everything revolves around mankind, and that we should submit to nothing, in order to come to our own conclusions. “Nature, in its ministry to man, is not only the material, but its process and the result.” “ All of the parts incessantly work into each other’s hands for the profit of man,” (Emerson 68). Emerson believed that everything, good or bad, on earth works for the good and profit of man himself. The Bible teaches that all things work out, in our lives, for the glory of God, so that He may be honored. God wants to work through us, for His glory, not ours. In contradiction to Emerson’s thought that the world is centered around man, we should, because we are God’s creation, submit ourselves to God, and live for His purpose instead of our own.

In part one of Nature, Emerson says, “There I feel that nothing can befall me in lifeno disgrace, no calamity (leaving me my eyes), which nature cannot repair,” (Emerson 66). From this one might conclude that an individual needs no one, and that there is nothing that can hinder us that “nature” cannot fix. According to Christian belief, nothing can hinder our walk with God but natural or carnal things. Nature was not created by God, to simply fix things. The Christian belief is that we are to submit ourselves to God, for he is above all. God is the “Author and Finisher of our faith,” (Hebrews 1) and he is the one to turn to when we have issues in our lives, not nature. Nature was created by God, not to be worshiped, but to be marveled as God’s creation.

Along with the many conflicts of Emerson’s thoughts with the Bible, he also had many relevant ideas that still relate to today’s society as it did in his day. For example, in Emerson’s introduction to Nature, he explains that, “We have theories of races and of functions, but scarcely yet a remote approach to an idea of creation,” (Emerson 65). In today’s society, we refuse the idea of God creating the Earth and the Universe. Instead, we choose to believe the contradictory belief of Evolution. Emerson goes on to say, “We are now so far from the road to the truth, that religious teachers dispute and hate each other, and speculative men are esteemed unsound and frivolous,” (Emerson 65). Scientists are constantly trying to prove their theories of nature and how it all started, but have never come to a true conclusion. Science, in a whole, with all of its outcomes, and conclusions, all round up to the fact that God did create the earth; we just choose to not accept it. “Whenever a true theory appears, it will be its own evidence…Its test is, that it will explain all phenomena,” (Emerson 65). Once we do choose to accept what the Bible teaches, all of the unanswered questions of the universe will be explained.

In Conclusion, Emerson taught a very self and man centered message which contradicts most Christian belief based on the Bible. Though some of Emerson’s ideas give some insight on issues that we face in the world today (the argument over creation, for example), but the fulfillment of all human potential can not be accomplished through an acute awareness of the beauty and truth of the surrounding natural world. But it can be accomplished through God, who molds us and creates us into who he wants us to be. In his day, Emerson attacked the formal religion and argued for self-reliance, and yet, Nature supports logical reasoning in the minds of the unbelievers of today. Transcendentalism denies the thought that there is a supreme ruler meant to rule over us, who created and knows all truth, and we choose to live by these standards instead of God’s word. Transcendentalism may explain the world around us today, but does not, in any aspect, reveal the truth. Instead it attempts to justify our immoral lifestyle, which is the exact opposite of what the Bible teaches.

Parenting skills

The way a parent reacts to a given situation is a reflection of their method of parenting. Are there different parenting ways? Or is parenting just an obligation where parenting is just simple parenting?. Parenting skills can be categorized in four distinct classifications controlling, nurturing, and indulging. Parenting skills are important because it shapes a Childs behavior.

The first category of a parenting skill are the controlling parents. Parents that are excessively watching their children’s actions at all time are the type of parents that are too over protective. A controlling parent strict and wants a child to do exactly what they say without questions. A controlling parent also wants everything their way in either what school is best for their child without asking for opinion or suggestions or what kind of crowd to hang out with. For example; When I was in high school I had a friend who had very controlling parents. Susie wasn’t allowed to date, go out with friends to the AMC theaters or wear pink lip gloss. If she would go to the movies with her friends she would have to bring her nine year old brother Bobby along. She also wasn’t allowed to wear low raised cut off jeans, spaghetti strapped shirts or V neck shirts. Though, Susie was eighteen years old her parents would still demand that she would be in bed by nine o’clock. In addition, Sissies parents were so controlling that Susie looked like if she was living in a dark hole. In summery, controlling parents are selfish and old fashioned.

livepaperhelp.com

The second category of parenting skills is the good nurturing type. To begin with, nurturing parenting provide not only material things but also emotional support. Parents that are nurturers develop understanding, encouragement and know how to foster well. An excellent example of a nurturing parent is my father. My father is the type of person that goes out of his way to nurture his family well by filling up the refrigerator, paying the rent when it is due and keeping us happy under a safe roof. All in all, the nurturer parent skill provides love, food, clothes, shelter and warmth.

The third parenting skill is the indulgent parenting skill. This kind of parenting skill is having patience and being tolerant of a Childs behavior. For instance, when I was in elementary school I disliked my classmate Anita because she was showing off the new Barbie doll that I wished to have. As I remember, I was in the library and I decided to put Elmer’s glue on Anita’s chair. As we left the library students noticed Anita’s white stained skirt some students laughed and others were worried. Anita’s blue skirt was ruined by the Elmer’s glue. As evil as it might sound, At the moment, my behavior seemed hilarious but after the she told the teacher what I had done, I was in deep trouble. The librarian called my mother and told her what had occurred. When I got home I seriously though I was going to get a spanking to my rear end but my mom decided to do the opposite and buy me that same Barbie doll Anita had because my mom made it seem that I was jealous and that I needed some attention. I was in so much trouble in school but my mother was indulgent in buying me all sorts of stuff. What can I say? Indulgent parents do come in handy sometimes.

In conclusion, I can best identify my future parenting skills as being a slight controlling, nurturing and indulging. There are different types of parenting skills but its up to me to decide which one I’m going to use. Parenting skills maybe difficult and important to do but it shapes society and it goes on from generations to generations.

‘The Strange Case of Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde’ by is a novel, written in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson in a Victorian society that has very strict views about, and about the separation of good and evil. In this era, the Victorian ideal was to have a marriage, to be religious, for everyone to live in happiness and to have a family. However, sex outside marriage was very wrong. This idea about sex outside marriage was very hypocritical due to the raising levels of prostitution and in true reality, many were poor and no one who came from a poor background had a chance to get very far in life as the Victorian world was very much dominated by class. Because of this era dominated by class, many people were condemned to live in poor accommodation with overcrowding due to more and more people becoming poorer and poor people couldn’t afford good health services so therefore, many of the population died from disease.

The idea of this novel is to show people the relationship between good and evil in a realistic society against the Victorian ideal. In this novel, Mr Hyde is the evil side of Dr Jeykll. No one knows that they are together but in the novel, Mr Utterson is obsessed by this ‘Hyde’ and is desperate to know about him and know what he looks like. This is because in an ideal Victorian society, the poor and evil are set aside from the rich and good and Utterson seems desperate to define evil so that everyone can know what evil looks like because it seems that he is an obvious representative of evil.

At the beginning of the novel he tramples on a little girl and later on murders an old man and draws huge attention to himself because Victorians expect people to be perfect and when a person did something wrong or strange then the were instantly suspected to be evil. Mr Utterson is astounded by Mr Hyde’s behaviour when they first talk he says something to himself about Dr Jeykll’s ‘new friend’. When Mr Utterson says ‘Satan’s signature upon a face, it is on that of your new friend’ he is implying that Mr Hyde is evil just by speaking to him which shows how naive the Victorians were about the good and evil issue. Even the high people in society like Mr Utterson who seem to be important and intelligent see Mr Hyde as possessed, evil and troglodytic. Mr Hyde is seen as an animal by the way that Robert Louis Stevenson described him by using words like ‘snarled’ and ‘savage’

When Mr Utterson meets with Mr Hyde, Stevenson shows that Utterson is a very curious character because he is so desperate to pinpoint evil and know what evil looks like. When Mr Hyde shouts at Mr Utterson about Utterson hearing about Hyde from Jeykll by saying ‘He never told you’ this is a critical turn in the story as we get the hint that they are both connected in someway.

Good and evil in this novel are two very separate things as well as in Victorian society. They like the two ideologies to very far apart to stop any disruption between the two. In the 1st two paragraphs we are given the idea that Jeykll and Hyde are separated. The evidence for this is their houses, they both have different houses however they are both connected by a lab which defies that ideology of good and evil completely separate which underlines that it is impossible to disconnect good and evil. Although these two houses are completely different so there is no hint to the neutral characters in the story that these two houses are connected.

Dr Jeykll’s house is in a ‘square of ancient handsome houses’ this quote denoted that Dr Jeykll is from a high position of society. ‘and at the door of which wore a great air of wealth and comfort’ this shows that Stevenson is trying to maintain our belief that Jeykll and Hyde are separated as wealth and comfort are both connected to goodness, wealth is especially considered to be good as in Victorian times, wealth mean that you very high in society and instantly made you good. Jeykll’s home is a very pleasant, warm house. We can tell that there seems to be no evil within this house. The furniture inside the house can also describe Dr Jeykll too which his ‘polished cabinets’ and open fire and that his house is very clean.

Mr Hyde’s house is completely different, all the houses are packed together and are extremely cramped which, in the real Victorian era, denoted lack of wealth, dirty and evil. There are tramps living outside, the door is ‘blistered and distained’ the wall was discoloured and the door had no bell or knocker which could suggest Hyde’s desire to be independent and alone which also shows his unfriendliness. All of these features show that Hyde, in Victorian society, would be suspected to be evil. Even although we know, Stevenson does very well the make us believe that Jeykll and Hyde are two separate people and that they are no way connected.

In this paragraph I will explain the truth compared to the ideals of Victorian society. In the novel, people like Utterson and Lanyon are completely obsessed with the tradition of good and evil being separated. They could never bear to see them both together. When Mr Utterson goes in search of Hyde to try and define evil, he has no idea that Mr Hyde could ever be connected to Dr Jeykll and thinks that Dr Jeykll is the perfect role model because he projects his evil side onto Hyde so when he feels like doing something bad, he can use the ‘Hyde’ identity to do as he pleases.

The problem with how Jeykll does this is his problem, the drag that turns him back soon begins to loose effect and Jeykll has to lock himself up because he no longer has the choice to choose to be good or evil. This shows that attempting to be perfect in society is hopeless in reality and that the Victorian ideal is impossible to live by. However Lanyon thought that living by the ideal would be an easy task and that everyone should be able to live by it and has done his best to live by it all him life. But when he sees Jeykll turn into Hyde he is shocked and gives up the will to live because everything that he had followed and believed in disappeared in front of his eyes and to see an upstanding member of society turn into a murdering fiend turned his world upside down.

This novel basically says that the Victorian society was impossible to live by because in reality, life is a mix of good and evil and that there is no way you can separate it because there is no one perfectly good, or perfectly evil and that life is balanced and tat Victorian society was extremely hypocritical due to them saying that they were perfect and that deny their evilness.

The novel ¡°Of Mice and Men¡± by John Steinbeck contains many scenarios which show either anger or unnecessary violence.

In Chapter One, the reader is immediately introduced to a scene where anger is demonstrated. George and Lennie are traveling on the bus on their way to a new job. The bus driver tricks them into getting off early, saying their destination is only down the road, when in fact, the bus driver is just to lazy to drop them off at the gate. This annoys George and frustrates him, as he says ¡°We could of just as well rode clear to the ranch if that bastard bus driver knew what he was talkin¡¯ about.¡± Stienbeck uses a colloquial style with swear words and slang to add realism to the characters and the situation. In his rage he shouts at Lennie, and the fact that he had been asking George the same question over and over again just added to his anger.

Later on in the novel, when they are setting up camp, Lennie irritates George again over what they are eating. George is cooking ¡®enough beans for four men¡¯ when Lennie says ¡°I like ¡®em with ketchup.¡± This sets George off and he says ¡°Well, we ain¡¯t got any¡Whatever we ain¡¯t got that¡¯s what you want.¡± It is as if George is implying Lennie does it on purpose. George then goes on to describe how his life would be without Lennie, and that he could do what all the other ranch workers do. He was responsible for his well-being, so it is almost as if George is somewhat of a father figure to Lennie. The reader also finds out that Lennie loses all the jobs him and George get together ¡°You can¡¯t keep a job and you lose me ever¡¯ job I get.¡± One cannot blame George for getting mad at Lennie all of the time. He has taken on such a huge responsibility, and it is deeply effecting his life, and not for the better either.

George continues to explain what happened at the last place they worked at in Weed ¡°Jus¡¯ wanted to feel that girl¡¯s dress- jus¡¯ wanted to pet it like a mouse¡. Well, how the hell did she know you jus¡¯ wanted to feel her dress? She jerks back and you hold on like it was a mouse.¡± Lennie had obviously gotten them both into a lot of trouble, as the reader finds out they had to hide in a ditch all day so they could escape the mob chasing them.

livepaperhelp.com

From these few examples of anger in Chapter One, it can be seen that George is looking after Lennie as one would look after a young boy. The reader realizes that when George is angry, he almost immediately calms down after he has been yelling at Lennie, and then makes peace with him. It is almost like the relationship between a father and a son. George unleashes his anger, but then apologizes to him.

At the start of Chapter Two, another sign of anger appears from George and his new boss. Lennie and George had just arrived at the ranch in the afternoon, and are greeted by an old man named Candy. Candy straight away fills them in of what the boss thinks of them being late ¡°He was as sore as hell when you wasn¡¯t here to go out this morning.¡± He later goes on showing them their new beds in the bunkhouse, and George is unhappy to find a can of bug repellent above his bed on a shelf. Candy tries to cover up saying that the previous worker was very hygienic, and the can was there in case it needed to be used.

The first bit of violence we read about is again when Candy is showing George and Lennie around. Candy tells the story of one Christmas when the boss gave them a gallon of whisky, how the stable buck and a worker got into a fight ¡° They let the nigger come in that night. Little skinner the name of Smitty took after the nigger¡The guys wouldn¡¯t let him use his feet, so the nigger got him.¡± The ¡®nigger,¡¯ who had no use of his legs, beat up Smitty really bad, but only because he was not allowed to use his legs. This is evidence of unnecessary violence.

In the same chapter George experiences more anger when Lennie spoke to the boss, even though he was instructed not to by George ¡° So you wasn¡¯t going to say a word. You were gonna keep your big flapper shut and leave me do the talkin¡¯. Damn near lost our job.¡± However, discipline of this kind is necessary in order to teach Lennie not to do it again.

Another incident where rage is shown is when Curley comes into the bunkhouse looking for his wife. He rudely asks George if he had seen her around, and they both speak to each other in some what of a rude and violent ¡├îmanner. When Curley leaves, George says ¡°Ya know, Lennie, I¡¯m scared I¡¯m gonna tangle with that bastard myself. I hate his guts.¡± He is understandably very angry after the way in which Curley had spoken to him.

In Chapter Three, Candy returns with his dog from a game of horse-shoes, when Carlson comes in and makes a scene about the smell of his pet. Carlson had coped with the smell of the dog for a long time, but finally an argument breaks out over whether the dog should be shot, and eventually Candy says to Carlson that he can shoot it. This once again portrays needless violence, but this time, it an innocent dog that suffers.

At the end of Chapter Three the reader sees the first proper sign of violence when Curley and Lennie get into a fight. Curley lives in a world of fighting. He is an amateur boxer, and feels he has something to prove as he is small. It starts when Carlson and Candy start teasing Curley about being a coward. In embarrassment and anger, Curley looks around the room for a way to let out his rage. His gazes at Lennie, only to see him ¡®still smiling with delight at the memory of the ranch.¡¯ Curly thinks Lennie is laughing at him, so attacks him. Lennie does nothing to defend himself, he just cries for George¡¯s help. After a few punches, Slim tries to break up the fight, but is stopped by George who yells ¡°Get ¡®im Lennie!¡± With George¡¯s encouragement, Lennie reaches out, grabs Curley¡¯s hand and crushes it until Curly is reduced to tears. Lennie reveals an unintentional violence. He does not even think to fight back when Curley attacks him, but when he does, it is with immense and uncontrollable force. George has to slap him several times to make him let go. This scene demonstrates the tension in the bunkhouse, and just how physically strong Lennie is. This is a very violent incident as Curly gets badly hurt.

In Chapter Four, Lennie is left behind as all the others go into town. As he wonders about, he comes across Crooks. They sit down and talk, and Crooks begins to tease Lennie by saying ¡°Jus¡¯ s¡¯pose he [George] don¡¯t come back. What¡¯ll you do then?¡± It is almost as if Crooks is taking out his hatred of white people out on Lennie, because white people usually have it easier than him, but this is not the case with Lennie.

Later on in the chapter, Curley¡¯s wife goes to where Crooks and Candy are. She begins to annoy them and when Crooks tries to throw her out of his room and threatens her by saying he will go to the boss about her, she fights back with ¡°Listen, nigger¡You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?¡± This makes Crooks realize where his place is, and it shows the influence a white women can have. Black people and women were treated differently in American society as they were considered to be less superior.

At the start of Chapter Five, Lennie sits before his dead puppy. He worries aloud that his puppy ¡®got killed,¡¯ as he thinks George will not let him tend to the rabbits. His mood swings from remorse to anger and then fear. He tries hiding the puppy in the hay, but then he just hurls it away. This is just like the reaction of a child and it shows how mentally challenged he is.

Further on, Curley¡¯s wife comes in the barn and starts speaking to Lennie. He tries to avoid her as George had told him to, but she convinces him otherwise. As they talk she begins revealing herself to Lennie. Moving closer, she tells Lennie more about herself and her past, whilst Lennie moves closer explaining how he likes the feel of rabbits and other soft things. She lets Lennie stroke her hair, but as he becomes rough, she begins to panic, which in turn causes Lennie to panic. He covers her face in the attempt to shut her up, but he kills here. He attempts to bury her body in the hay as he did with the dog as he realizes he has ¡®done a bad thing.¡¯ Then he grabs his dead puppy and goes to where George instructed him ¨C the bush ¨C a place he could go if he got into trouble. The death of Curley¡¯s wife causes a great disturbance. George knows that it was Lennie and tries to reassure himself that they may be nice to him and lock him up. Candy tells him that Curley will organize a lynch party. This is an important part of the novel as it has a lot to do with violence. The reader knows Lennie did not mean to kill Curley¡¯s wife, yet all Curley and Carlson want to do is kill. They are both violent, bloodthirsty people.

Finally in Chapter Six, the death of Lennie by George takes place. George thinks back to the idea that Candy was disappointed when he did not kill his own dog, and so he kills Lennie out of love in the most painless way. Steinbeck has skillfully woven a number of parallel events into the story. Candy and his dog provide a parallel to George and Lennie. It is the threat of violence to be used against Lennie that causes George to take the final step of killing his friend.

Curley on the other hand, wanted to ¡®shoot ¡®im in the guts,¡¯ a kind of revenge for Lennie killing his wife.

Steinbeck evokes the readers most profound sympathy by the use of a simple plot, common language and an easy natural setting. The themes of anger and violence play a very important part in the novel, ¡°Of Mice and Men.¡± The act of violence is how many problems are solved, and anger is never far away from each character. Everyone is affected, and this is why they are two major themes.

Creon

Throughout the course of history, there have been many kings and leaders ruling the great ancient cities. Sometimes these rulers would be heartless and do anything to make things go there way, and other times you get a ruler who is proud to be in control and listens to his people. That is not the case in the play Antigone. Here, we have a man named Creon who is put into power because he is the next family member in line to do so. He tries to be a good ruler and thinks he is doing everything right, but problems come across. He tries to fix them with his power but the more power he uses the worse it gets.

Creon is much similar, in a way, to his preceding rulers. He came from a family life that was a little distorted. In is past, there have been murders in his family and incest, but that was unknown. He grew up knowing only high powered people because of his close family. That is what made Creon who he is today. He thought he would be different from his other family members when they ruled, by having a different way of order. But unfortunately that did not work because in the end not only did he ruin his life but many others too.

Throughout this play, you get a better understanding of Creons principles. As it progressing you come to find out just how cruel and unthoughtful he can really be. He believes that he is of the highest power. He is in control and everyone should obey him. Back in that time, they thought of women as lower class and that they can never stand up to a man. That is why when Antigone actually confessed, Creon was quick to sentence her to death so that no one would think that a women had beaten him. As Creon said on page 5, lines 51-5 “Go down below and love, / if love you must-love the dead! While I’m alive, / no woman is going to lord it over me.”

live paper help

If Creon were actually real, he would need to learn one thing think before you act. When he proposed the idea to not give Polynices a proper burial people started to turn against him, especially those like Antigone who thought it was a very bad idea. Then Creon made it even worse by announcing that if someone should try to bury the body they shall be put to death. He did not know then, but his bad judgment was going to ruin his life. When he found that Antigone buried the body, even though she was his niece, he still sentenced her to death. The only reason for this was so that he would not look as though a woman has overpowered him in front of his kingdom. Soon, his bad judgments finally caught up to him. He realized what he did, sentencing his sons’ fianc to death. On page 56, lines 18-10 Creon finally gives in “Oh it’s hard/ giving up the hearts desire…but I will do it-/ no more fighting a losing battle with necessity.”

I believe that Creon being in power was wrong. He became cocky and knew that he had power to do whatever. But in the end people like him always do something wrong. After Antigone killed herself, his son Haemon killed himself because he lost the woman he loved. Soon after that, Creons wife killed herself realizing what her husband had become and what he did to her son. So in the end Creons principles and judgments really turned against him and made his life torture.

Characters

Like people in real life, fictional characters reveal themselves by how they look,

what they say and how they say it, what they do, as well as how they feel.

livepaperhelp.com

This two characters, George and Jack, reveal themselves, in most of the story, by

how they feel. In spite of being different, both men have something in common how

and what they feel towards their own Mabel.

George escapes from Mabel because he doesn’t want to marry her. In a similar way,

Jack refuses to accept he is in love with Mabel. But both men end (up) marrying their own Mabel. They feel the same under some circumstances both feel afraid and

nervous. When George, is about to meet Mabel, after seven years, he realizes he is

not prepared to marry her “Then, suddenly, without warning, he was afraid. He had

not seen Mabel for seven years... He felt a terrible sinking in his stomach, and his

knees began to shake. He couldn’t do it.” And Jack feels that way when he is in the

house with Mabel “He was amazed, bewildered and afraid.” “He was afraid, even a

little horrified.”

What causes them to behave as they do?

George behaves in such a cowardly way, escaping from her, because he had not

seen Mabel for seven years and that causes him fear and insecurity. That’s why he

avoids answering every letter she sends to him, because of the fact that he feels

pressured by Mabel, and because of that he escapes from her.

Jack escapes from Mabel, but in a different way. He escapes from his own feelings

towards Mabel. He has never fallen in love, and that feeling fills him with

nervousness and fear “He had no intention of loving her; his whole will was against

his yielding. It was horrible.”

Although, at first, George and Jack have a strong resistance to accept they love their

own Mabel, both end realizing that they are in love with them. It can be seen, when

George is in the club (at the beginning of the story), that he really love his wife

“He’s so terribly miserable since his wife went home.” “It must be very pleasant for

her to know that her husband loves her as much as that.”

At last Jack finally accepts he loves Mabel “And again, from the pain of his breast,

he knew how he loved her. He went and bent to kiss her, gently, passionately, with

his heart’s painful kiss.” Such is the way he loves her, that he asks her to marry him

“I want you, I want to marry you, we’re going to be married, quickly, quickly

tomorrow if I can.”

But despite this contradictory feeling, which doesn’t allow themselves to

express and admitt what and how they feel, they finally give vent to their emotions,

behaving freely, without any kind of resistance.

The purpose of descriptive language in literature is to connect the reader to the story or poem. Literary devices such as imagery, alliteration and analogies are an important aid for the author. These devices allow the reader to connect with the story on a deeper level, and they allow for enhanced visualization. Shakespeare uses words like lewdness, incestuous and loathsome to set the mood of the scene. In the play Hamlet Shakespeare uses profound diction and marvelous imagery to show the mind-set of Hamlet and the Ghost towards Claudius and the Queen.

The play is introduced with the understanding that Hamlet is still grieving for his father exceedingly. He has immense animosity towards King Claudius, and feels as if he is alone. His mother married Claudius, and his beloved father is dead without warning. But when Horatio tells Hamlet about the ghost of his father, Hamlet is in high spirits but apprehensive at the same time. He wasn’t sure about if the Ghost was really his father, or if it was an evil spirit in disguise. Shakespeare created a somber mood when the Ghost talked, by using metaphors and grisly diction. From this scene the reader learns how Hamlet’s father dies, and the Ghost’s feelings towards the situation. But Hamlet and the Ghost’s feelings of enmity are not spread evenly among the Queen and Claudius.

The description of Hamlet Sr.’s death in itself draws the reader to align with him and Hamlet. In the Ghost’s soliloquy Shakespeare sets a morbid mood by using morose diction. The Ghost compares Claudius’s actions to those of a serpent and calls him “incestuous” and “adulterate beast, with witchcraft of his wit, with traitorous gifts.” Adjectives such as these bring out the tone and feeling of the character. This description conveys to the reader that Claudius is a character not to be liked. The Ghost leaves the Queen be, because after all he did love her, and he felt that her weighted conscience would be enough punishment. Overall Shakespeare easily creates the mood of a particular situation, and allows the reader to fully comprehend the purpose of the characters.

In conclusion, literary devices have the specific purpose of giving the reader the full meaning of a piece of writing. If the reader cannot ascertain or connect with a piece, then it really doesn’t fully serve it’s purpose. Shakespeare clearly wants the readers of Hamlet to feel what the characters feel, and obtain a sense of what the purpose of each character is. Stories and poems are a gateway to the imagination, and those that use literary devices enhance the mind’s ability to really explore the depths of emotion.

Throughout the story of Beowulf, Beowulf must endure many battles against monsters who terrorize different kingdoms. The first monster he fights is Grendel, a monster from hell who is terrorizing the kingdom of his neighboring country, Denmark. Next, he fights Grendel’s mother who is the same type of hell demon who is mad because he kills her son. Finally, he has to slay a dragon that is wreaking havoc throughout his own kingdom. With each of these battles he seems to take something away, not a physical boon, but something more important. With each battle Beowulf fights, he achieves a clearer understanding of himself as a warrior, and his role in the rest of society.

In the beginning of the story, Beowulf is in Geatland and goes to fight Grendel in Denmark when he learns that he has been destroying their kingdom for twelve years. While it might at first seem that Beowulf’s motives for helping Denmark are altruistic, he goes to fulfill the need to prove himself. Beowulf has always been thought of as the least tough warrior and he needs to improve his status. He fights Grendel wanting to prove himself and is successful. After he kills Grendel, there is a great feast for him where he greatly rewarded and praised. He succeeds in his quest for status and feels he has completed his mission. However, after the battle he does recog

Later, Beowulf’s feelings towards his success change to more of a sense of duty and he gains a better understanding of…. One of the many things Beowulf was honored with a special chamber to sleep in set apart from the rest of his men. In the night, Grendel’s mother comes and attacks the kingdom, but at first Beowulf does not come to their aid because he was secluded from the rest of the kingdom. He feels guilty that he let his guard down and also feels like he is partly responsible for this attack because he wasn’t there to stop it. The sense of duty he gains comes from this guilt. Beowulf acts on new understanding of his said responsibilities when he goes to fight Grendel’s mom. This time he is not so arrogant and wants to kill Grendel’s mom because he feels it is his duty. This is exemplified in the epic poem when Beowulf says he must fight Grendel’s mom on his own. While this might seem more arrogant he does this because he does not want to put his men in danger a second time. Another way Beowulf matures while preparing to battle Grendel’s mom is when he talks about the possibility he might die. This shows how he has humbled because he is even considering the possibility that he might not succeed.

After Beowulf goes back to Geatland, there are more examples of change in Beowulf. Beowulf is already humble, but there is another example of him not being so egotistical. King Hygelac dies, and Beowulf is offered the throne by the widowed Hygd, even though her son would be the ruler according to the order of succession. Beowulf declines the offer and chooses to be the guardian of Hygelacs son until he dies in battle. Then Beowulf became king. Fifty years pass while Beowulf is king, and it is not until then when there is a major change. Beowulf is now very old and not as confident anymore. The need to prove himself arises again as he becomes more insecure in his old age. Another opportunity for a battle turns up. A dragon was awakened by a tomb raider and starts terrorizing Beowulfs kingdom
