This film is free from choppy dialogue and overbearing special effects that can be attributed to the simple time period that it is from. The Passion of Joan of Arc enthralls its audience through potent facial expressions, clever symbolism, and a poignant score.


The silent communication that Joan conveys to the audience is full of expressions that a monologue could never do justice to. The audience gets a close up view of Joan’s face, and is able to see every hint of emotion, from the mere twitch of an eye, to a curl of a nostril. In order to reinforce the effectiveness of the absence of dialogue, this film demonstrates a very skillful display of the use of symbolism. There is a particular scene where Joan is confined to her cell for the moment and she sees the shadow of a cross fall upon the floor from the window. As she takes a moment to contemplate, one of her persecutors enters the cell and positions himself over the display of the cross inadvertently. This of course is a message that all of Joan’s persecutors are not in God’s grace as she is. That particular scene lasts but a mere 0 seconds, and yet it elaborates on the character of Joan and the character of her persecutors. Though this may sound trivial and unimpressive to today’s standards, one must consider the time period that this film was conceived in, and the overall relation that this particular scene has to the entire film. Another use of symbolism that the film displays is a skull. This skull is lying on and in the dirt, positioned to where only one eye cavity can be seen. Within this cavity lie dozens of disgusting maggots all contorted and slithering over one another. The skull and maggots here are a symbol for the foreboding death that is to come for Joan. The image of the skull is something that has often been associated with death, but it has never been shot in this way, hence why it is so powerful and influential. It’s position, and especially the maggots that infest it, are what make this particular symbol so unique and remarkable.


Since this film is derived from the silent era, one might infer that the absence of a dialogue or monologue could hinder the film, but the compelling score acts as the language of the film. The powerful notes that are expelled from the tongue of the orchestra direct the solemn mood of this film. During each contemplative moment, the music is very low, almost like a whisper, to indicate that Joan is in a deep state of thought and during heighten points of tension, the music roars in a melody of mixed emotion. The score that plays throughout the film was actually not conceived with the film, but rather, inspired by the film. This unique fact displays the impact that The Passion of Joan of Arc has had to many people in the fine arts genre. The movie is essentially directed and guided by the music, for it is what binds the film and creates a certain fluidity from scene to scene.


The Passion of Joan of Arc exhibits a true understanding of how to emotionally attach the audience to the characters. On a last Saturday, my friend and I went to Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum located near downtown San Jose. Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum was narrowed out about two or three thousand square feet. There was a head of the snake bore out in front of the forehead. According to my guess, the sculpture was approximate 7’4” tall.


The next sculpture we observed was Nerfertiti. The sculpture portrayed the appearance of Nerfertiti, which was nicely done with paint. The scale and pigment of the paint seemed to fade over time. Nerfertiti looked beautifully just through the sculpture itself. Her eyes were long that matched with her extended two full curves eyebrows equally, her thin red lips, and her petite high nose. I just couldn’t visualize how her beauty looks in reality. A glance at the sculpture, I believed it illustrated the true beauty of a woman. Beside her beauty, the expression of her face seemed gentle and grateful. The model of Nerfertiti was about the size of our head, from the top of the head to the shoulder.

This happened on Saturday. On Sunday, we took airplane back to Honolulu. In the computer room (room 15) we don’t really want people entering our own accounts so to prevent that we each have our own “log in “ name and password so only we and the teachers if need be have access. The reason for this is being the fact that we might have some sensitive data or information that we don’t want anybody to know about and also mainly for our privacy. His point is driven home by Edward’s extensive use of figurative language, including several metaphors and similes. The title of the piece alone references to his main metaphor, that of God’s hand being the only tiny thread that prevents mere men from an eternity of misery. In effect, Edwards introduces repetition through the continuous use of the idea of man being held in the tenuous grasp of God’s hand. In one example of this metaphor, Edwards says


O sinner! Consider the fearful danger you are in it is a great furnace of wrath, a wide and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you, as against many of the damned in hell. You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it, and ready every moment to singe it, and burn it asunder; and you have no interest in any Mediator, and nothing to lay hold of to save yourself, nothing to keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own, nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you can do, to induce God to spare you one moment (504).


Throughout his piece, this one idea, the idea that God’s grace is a slippery, non-guaranteed gift, asserts itself time after time. He repeatedly makes mention of each man walking on God’s thin hand, a hand which is the only barrier between salvation and damnation. If the man chooses a life of sin, he is released from God’s hand into hell, not because of God’s wrath, but because of his choices of sin. Edward’s God seems to be somewhat indifferent to the fate of the men that tread this dangerous path. He releases or embraces the man only when his actions warrant it. It appears that God plays no part in the fate of men. He says, “Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell (50). Each transgression adds to his guilt, and eventually his good qualities weaken under the burden of the sins and can no longer hold him from the pits of hell.


Edwards also uses the metaphor of water. In explanation, he says


The wrath of God is like great waters that are dammed for the present; they increase more and more, and rise higher and higher, till an outlet is given; and the longer the stream is stopped, the more rapid and mighty is its course, when once it is let loose. It is true, that judgment against your evil works has not been executed hitherto; the floods of Gods vengeance have been withheld; but your guilt in the mean time is constantly increasing, and you are every day treasuring up more wrath; the waters are constantly rising, and waxing more and more mighty; and there is nothing but the mere pleasure of God, that holds the waters back, that are unwilling to be stopped, and press hard to go forward. If God should only withdraw his hand from the floodgate, it would immediately fly open… (50).


The water is held back by God’s hand, and though the pressure continues to raise, God’s hands hold back the flood that threaten. Though water can flow slowly over, the pressure continues to rise, and eventually this power will overtake the lives of men. God’s hand holds back these floodwaters, and His vengeance is held in check until the guilt of sinners has built up too much pressure for the gate to withstand. At that point, God’s hand will loose the waters (his wrath) and allow the dishonorable, sinning men of earth to be washed away.


Winthrop and Edwards both present their positions using metaphors extensively. Although each has his own style, both are trying to achieve the same goal�to turn men to Christ, whether it is before men have fallen, as is Winthrop’s case, or whether it is after men have turned to wickedness and corruption and need to be led back to the right path. Each writer leaves the reader/listener with a certain vision in his mind, one of a community that works together in the glory of God or one in which God spares no mercy on the sinners of the world. Their use of metaphor allows their readers to fully comprehend what each is trying to convey�it allows the readers, even readers in today’s society, to get a clear grasp of the images of God and his mercy and wrath that permeated their society. whites but composed by blacks. Whites were frustrated because

to be the stars until Bill Haley appeared with his Rock Around


the Clock. In this decade, Elvis Presley introduced a music that


was sexual suggestive and outraged dull adults. In time he


changed the style of the music by adopting a country and western


style and became a national hero. By the end of this decade and


the start of the next, Rock n Roll started to decline because it


was formula ridden and it was too sentimental. Teenage audiences


transferred their allegiance to Folk music.


In 16 the renewal of Rock n Roll came when The Beatles


started to play. The Beatles, for some the best rock group ever,


were from Liverpool, England. Through the 60s, The Beatles


dominated the record industries and with their dominant


instrumentation, which included electric leads, rhythm, and bass


guitar, drums and sometimes an electric organ, changed the name


of Rock n Roll to just Rock. During the 160s many other styles


of music arose from Rock like, Motown, Soul music, Jazz-rock ,


Folk-rock and others.


Folk-Rock the most appreciated of this derivations and was


first suggested by Bob Dylan. This kind of music brought to folk


music a hard beat and amplification; and to Rock, a new poetic


style. California was one of the major centers of rock activity


and experimentation during the decade. First it was characterize


for its surfing music, a very joyful music that reflected the fun


people had while surfing. The Beach Boys were the ones who


introduced this kind of music.


At the end of the century this happy kind of music changed


to a more rebellious style that was designated the name of


hippie music. Groups that played this music were Country Joe


and The Mamas and The Papas. Along with this hippie ideas


popularity of hallucinogenic drugs produced a psychedelic style


of music called Acid Rock. By the end of the 60s the


distinctions between Rock n Roll and Rock were evident. The


early instruments- saxophone, piano, amplified guitar, and drums-


had been changed to electric guitar and bass, amplified drums and


other electronic devices. Not only did the instruments change but


so did the ideas behind the music. For example, to the lyrics of


teenage love and adolescent concerns were added social


commentary, glorification of drugs and free-association poetry


(Rock Music, Groliers, p.1). Groups like The Beach Boys, Crew


Cuts and The Everly Brothers were replaced by more imaginative,


non-descriptive names groups like The Who, Jefferson Airplane,


Big Brother and Holding Company. The Who, the most famous of


these groups, were originally from England and were reknowned


because of their bizarre stage performances, they would destroy


their instruments after their performance finished. The Who was


one of the first rock groups.


In the 70s, the common barriers of rock broke into more


divisions, like hard rock and mellow rock. Hard Rock was


extremely loud and electronically amplified and Mellow Rock was


softer and with acoustic instruments. In 17, in Jamaica, a new


style of music was created called Reggae. Reggae is a mixture of


rock, soul, calypso and Latin music. The king of Reggae was Bob


Marley. Other styles more in rocks borders, since Reggae was more


latin than rock, were created in the middle of this century,


like bubble gum rock, a funny playful music directed to the


youngest fans, Punk Rock, a loud, hard rock style derived from


acid rock and marked by its extremes of costume and staging


(Rock Music, Encarta, p.1), and Heavy Metal, which continued


the approach to Acid Rock but with a simpler musical dimension


but relying upon the power of repetitiveness, loud volume, and


electronic distortion.


One famous group of Heavy Metal was Led Zeppelin, a


British group that was formed in 168 by Jimmy Page (lead


guitar), Robert Plant (lead singer), John Paul Jones (pianist and


bassist) and John Bonham (drummer). Most music of this decade was


intended to be listened to, but not to be danced. But this


intention wasnt kept by Disco music that arose in 177 and was


especially for dancing. One great group of Disco music were the


Bee Gees. Disco music was described by rock fans as mechanical,


commercial and unlyrical (which is true). At the end of this


decade, rock, again became a dominant cultural force.


The last but not least section of this essay is rock of


the 80s. At the start of this last decade, rock groups became


more production oriented, mainly because of the sudden explosion


of videos. This new sensation was a good way to sell music to


the people. Heavy metal bands were greatly pushed by videos, but


most helped were the popular performers like Michael Jackson,


Prince and Boy George. The influence of British bands of punk,


disco, reggae and pop-rock was still big in the U.S. Rock scene.


At the same time, there of nostalgia to return to the older pre


rock music, like rhythm and blues, which was suggested by played


by Elvis Costello. By the middle of the 80s, almost every


country had begun to support indigenous music, and at the end of


this a vigorous talk-song style called rap became extremely


popular among urban black teenagers (Rock Music, Encarta,


p.1.).


Rock music taught me to appreciate things in a different


way. Ive learned this since rock is not an exact science, it can

As the fans wait for the opening pitch the anticipation level in the stadium is at its peak. This is a chance for the fans to sit and observe the surroundings. Looking around, fans notice large billboards with advertisements that appear randomly throughout the stadium. The red and white Budweiser sign in dead-a-way centerfield can put anyone in the mood for a “cold one”. The walls in left and right field can make a hitter salivate, while the fans can only dream about their chance of knocking one over. Centerfield seems like no mans land, and one can only imagine what it would be like out there in front of 50,000 people. Comments about the lineup and predictions about the game are not unlikely to be heard inside the stadium. It is as though everyone is an expert and thinks that he or she should be the manager.


The first pitch is thrown and it just makes the outside corner of the plate for a called strike. The fans show their appreciation towards the umpire’s generosity by cheering. The game is under way and the fans can sit back and enjoy what lies ahead. Some fans watch intensely, keeping careful record of every detail on their scorecards, while others can’t help but to imagine having their moment in the spotlight. SETTING


The setting is at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry, in the present time. The school is over a thousand years old. It was built by four wizards, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. They built it to keep Muggles from seeing their magic. Muggles are people who don’t have magic powers. PLOT

5. He goes to his godfathers house instead of back to the Dursleys for the rest of the summer. Ron and his family and Hermonie, Harry’s best friends go and stay there too.


6. Then school starts and Ron and Harry and Hermonie go to Hogwarts.


7. They all meet a new Dark Arts teacher Professor Umbridge and the strange year at Hogwarts starts. Professor Umbridge is not a good person.


8. A lot of bad things start happening. Harry starts having nightmares and the nightmares come true. In one of his nightmare keeps he seeing a door and each time he goes father into the door.


. Six of his friends help him fight bad and good. They have to fight death eaters. Harry has to fight Voldermort but gets help. Voldermort’s powers are fully restored.


10. Sad things happen to some of his friends and in the end Harry goes back to his Muggle family for the summer.

What does every woman really want? Stability, companionship, love and adoration. Unfortunately for Snow White, the seven dwarfs fail to provide her with any of these needs. Not only do they lack these qualities, but also they persist in abusing Snow White. But the dwarves have captivated her and it is her natural instinct to worship and love them-like a hostage falling in love with her captor, a bizarre phenomenon that really occurs.


Snow White is dissatisfied because what she wants most out of life and out of a man she thinks she has, except she does not want to admit that the dwarves, the abusive bastards, are the providers to her girlish desires. These girlish desires are extracted from Snow Whites innate ideology about the way things should be. The way things should be is that a young girl meets a charming prince and falls madly in love with him, only to marry, have children and live a long and happy life. This is the trite ideal that is embedded into girls minds at a young age. Ironically, this ideology transpires from the very fairy tales that the original Snow White comes from. It is no wonder that Barthleme emphasizes the absurdity of this genre of writing, and more importantly this stale ideology, in his own parody of sorts with Snow White.

The challenges that the Civil Rights Movement faced during 164-170 were poverty and frustration at the slow pace of change. A split in the movement occurred in 165. Different groups and individuals attempted to deal with these challenges in different ways.


A split in the movement began with the Selma Voting Campaign. A protest march was planned but this was forbidden by the federal government. Martin Luther King went ahead with the march anyway but when they were confronted by troops, they turned back. Sadly this caused a split in the movement with King’s followers wanting more conservative methods and radical Blacks wanting faster change. This is where Black Power was formed because they had thought the Government had forgotten about blacks. As well, racism was still very strong in the South and a lot of Blacks had few opportunities and were poverty stricken. Black Power wanted faster change.


There was a lot of Black frustration in the cities because of slow change. Riots broke out in the summers of 164-167 in New York, Philadelphia and Chicago. Blacks were frustrated about their living conditions, schooling, very bad health care, a lot of crime and unemployment. Blacks were feeling let down by the federal government who seemed not to be supporting them anymore. There was distrust in white liberals as blacks didn’t feel they were fully committed to the cause of black civil rights. Especially bad riots broke out in the Watts district of Los Angeles. 6 people died, $40 million worth of property was looted, burned or destroyed. 1,000 Police and 1,000 troops had to be called in to stop these riots.


Martin Luther King tried to deal with these problems through the Chicago Housing Campaign. King and his family moved into the slum apartments. They encouraged blacks not to pay rent until the plumbing and heating was fixed. A rally of 45,000 people was held at the Chicago’s Soldiers Field Stadium to ask for mixed schools, better jobs and integrated housing. One day after this rally chaos broke out, with rioting and looting going on for days and nights. This was a major set back to the civil rights movement. This campaign was partly successful because a lot of blacks came to hope for better lives but the government made no promises to improve housing and schools and so few changes were made in the ghettos.

Two different organisations tried to meet Blacks’ demands for faster, and not necessarily peaceful, change. Black Power, led by Stokely Carmichael, consisted of old SNCC members. The second radical black movement was called the Black Muslims. Also no Blacks were allowed to associate with whites. Whites were seen as demons. This is where Black Pride developed. Blacks took more of an interest in their history and culture. This new attitude saw the emergence of black drama, literature and poetry. More Blacks were attending university. They refused to be called “Nigger” or “coloured” and they were proud to be black.


King tried a new policy to win back the Black support he had lost. This was called his Broadening Policy. This policy was made to appeal to a wide range of people not just Blacks. King asked the government why they spent money on the Vietnam War when there were people in their own country who couldn’t afford necessary items. He also mentioned that it was unfair to draft non-university goers into the army because a lot of those people were blacks whose education was not up to a high enough standard to attend university. This upset the federal government and he lost the support of President Johnson. The Poor Peoples Campaign was also part of the Broadening Policy. King met with leaders of other ethnic cultures such as Indians and Mexicans. A camp-in was organised in Washington where people would live in tents and each day they would send delegations to the Government to ask for better jobs, but King was assassinated before this was able to happen.


The Civil Rights Movement did face a lot of challenges during this period of time. They did not always succeed but they did their best to keep persevering for black equality. Individuals tried to deal with these challenges as well. It was a hard time for the USA especially with the split in the movement and some blacks against each other but they all kept striving for the best they could possibly achieve.
