Life is fashion

¡°Life is like the fashion¡±, which could associated with the six big ideas of biology that use to describe all living things. All living things are composed by cells as their base units, like the cloth is the base units of fashion. This base unit of fashion could be flax, silk, cotton or other materials those are similar to the nutrient transporting cells, immune cells, organ constructing cells those build up all living things. Also, a dress can be made up by one type of material like single cell organisms, or can be made up by several types of clothes like multiple cell organisms.

When we think about fashion, the first thing rise from our mind could be the diversity of it. There are many species. Conventionally, western people wear dress and three-piece suit with tie; Chinese like cheong-sam for extruding the slender shape of ladies; Japanese wears kimono with wooden shoes which cater for their quick and short steps; overcoat, boots, scarf, earmuff, mitten could be adaptive for Russia because the chill weather. This diversity comes from the different requirements of the people live in different locations, the different styles set up for the different cultures, and the adaptation to the weather or environment. It is similar to the cause of birds with different shape of beak because they have to adapted to different kinds of food.

Change with time is a very complicated topic that studies how did life changed from prokaryotic cells to eukaryotic cells, from fish to mammal, from ape to human. Fashion also carries out this concept change with time. The primitive people use bark or lager leaves as clothes to cover the significant parts of their bodies. Later they realized it is not enough to resist to the cold weather and discovered the material flax to make warmer clothes. But the coarse character of flax made the consumer uncomfortable with it, so Chinese noticed silk might be much pleasant than flax for wearing. Heretofore, we have hundreds of materials which all are comfortable we can choose from for sewing. Even the new styles or cuttings of clothes have been developed yearly from the excellent designers or companies are the evolution of fashion. Same as lives, the organisms with better adaptive genetic material could survive from the competition and produce lots of offspring; therefore, the favored traits of lives could be continued and kept adapted to the environment which caused evolution.

All living thing affect or are affected by its surroundings or environment. For example, human always think they eat more foods during winter than summer. That¡¯s because they get more heat energy from the sun in summer that supply enough energy for them to carry out chemical reactions in the body. Fashion also interact with its surrounding. People choose gloomy color thick overcoat for a snowy day; a colorful vest with skirt for a sunny day. Fashion also affects each other among themselves the western suits were brought to china that affected the old-fashioned Chinese long gown during the beginning of 0th century. Time by time, Chinese men like wear western suits or improvers instead of long gown.

Every year there are thousands and thousands new designs of fashion created by the designers. The unfavorable designs might be thrown into the garbage. Only the popular and favorable one could widely sale over the world and past from a series to the next series. Anyways, most concepts of fashion have been maintained; the clothing I wear today may be similar to the styles the youth like 0 years ago We are both wears Liev¡¯s, Converse shoes and Likie cap. The same thing happens to life in biology and is reflected by the idea of continuity. My life was given by my parents and I was inherited the similar traits from them. For example, I inherited the characteristic short and strong muscular legs from my mother those made me unpleasant but I still have to accept. One day I will also pass these traits to my next generation even thought they must not satisfied of them.

Structure and function are always link together because the different structures of living things caused by the adaptation to the different functions. For example, parasite forms organisms always lack of appendages for locomotion and digestive system because they are unusable for them while they are suck on the body of host and absorb the digested food from victims. On the other hand, the arthropods have joined appendages which fit for their animated locomotion. Different structures of clothing also provide different functions for consumers. The knee socks suited for short skirt; socks best assorted with shorts. Another example would be a tightly fit noblest dress contrast to a flabby long pajamas.

Homeostasis is the ability or tendency of a living thing or a cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes. As its importance, If a plant doesn¡¯t have this ability, it may die when you fail to water it on occasion. When I associated this with fashion, I would think about the market of products. If the market requirement, which is the environment, has been changed, the style of the clothing has to be changed to maintain the sale of products.

Every living thing undergoes these six big ideas of life, but only the high level organisms like human can develop the high technology to study and try to control these ideas. Fashion is like life, it contains many different levels, and only the rich people can afford the exorbitant and costly clothing. Anyways, life is still a more complicated subject than fashion. It¡¯s unlike life which require creation. Life is already there yet and needs remorseless observation and investigation.

A Long-expected Party

Hobbiton, 60 years after Bilbo has found the Ring

Frodo is sitting against a tree, reading. He hears someone singing and runs to the road. Gandalf, wearing his grey robes and pointy hat, is driving a cart filled with fireworks and party necessities.

G (singing) The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began.

livepaperhelp.com

F Youre late!

Gandalf doesnt look at Frodo at first.

G A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

Gandalf and Frodo try to keep a straight face as long as possible, but then start laughing. Frodo gets in the cart and hugs Gandalf.

Frodo Its wonderful to see you, Gandalf!

G You didn’t think I’d miss your Uncle Bilbos birthday?

Frodo sits next to Gandalf as he drives the cart to Bag End.

F What news of the outside world? Tell me everything.

Gandalf Everything? Youre far too eager and curious for a Hobbit. Most unnatural.

The cart passes through Hobbiton.

G Well what can I tell you? Life in the wide world goes on much as it has this past Age, full of its own comings and goings. Scarcely aware of the existence of Hobbits. For which I am very thankful.

Ht Look its Gandalf! Its Gandalf!

They pass by Hobbits who are setting up the party. A banner reads Happy Birthday Bilbo Baggins.

G Ooh! The long-expected party! So how is the old rascal? I hear there’s going to be a party of special magnificence.

F You know Bilbo. Hes got the whole place in an uproar.

G Now, well that should please him.

F Half the Shires been invited.

G Goodness gracious me!

F Hes up to something.

Gandalf looks as if its the first hes heard of it.

G Oh, really?

F All right then, keep your secrets.

Gandalf laughs.

F Before you came along, we Bagginses were very well thought of.

G Indeed?

F Never had any adventures, or did anything unexpected.

G If you’re referring to the incident with the dragon, I was barely involved. All I did was give your uncle a little nudge out of the door.

F Whatever you did, you’ve been officially labeled a disturber of the peace.

G Really?

They drive past one of the Proudfeet, who looks grim. Some Hobbit children follow the cart.

Ht Gandalf! Gandalf! Fireworks? Gandalf?

Gandalf waits awhile, but just when the children are disappointed that nothing happened, fireworks go off behind the cart and they cheer. Gandalf laughs and the Hobbit he passed earlier grins, until his wife shoots him a dirty look.

F Gandalf, Im glad youre back.

Frodo jumps off the cart.

G So am I, dear boy! So am I.

Bag End

Gandalf goes through Bilbos gate, upon which is affixed a plaque stating No admittance except on party business. He knocks on the door with the end of his staff. Bilbo doesnt open the door, but shouts from inside.

Bilbo No thank you! We dont want any more visitors, well-wishers or distant relations!

Gandalf And what about very old friends?

The door swings open. Bilbo stares in amazement.

Bilbo Gandalf?

Gandalf Bilbo Baggins!

Bilbo My dear Gandalf!

Gandalf kneels down and the two friends hug.

Gandalf Good to see you! One hundred and eleven years old --who would believe it?

He looks at Bilbo, amazed.

G You havent aged a day.

Bilbo laughs, then Gandalf too.

B Come on, come in! Welcome, welcome!

They go inside.

B There we are. Well now. Tea? Or maybe something a little stronger? Ive got a few bottles of the old Winyard left. Twelve hundred ninety-six. Very good year. Almost as old as I am! Hahaha! It was laid down by my father. What say we open one, eh?

G Just tea, thank you.

Gandalf steps back but knocks his head against the chandelier. He steadies it and turns to Bilbos study, but then hits his forehead against a beam. He walks up to the desk and sees a map drawn by Bilbo, of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo talks to him from the kitchen.

B I was expecting you here last week! Not that it matters, you come and go as you please. Always have done and always will. You caught me a bit unprepared, Im afraid. We have some old chicken and pickles... Heres some cheese - oh no it wont do. There we got (...) Not much for afterlunch, oh no! Were all right. I have some cake. I can make you some eggs if you like...Gandalf?

G Just tea, thank you.

Bilbo turns round to Gandalf, who was standing right behind him.

B Oh, right!

Bilbo stuffs some food in his mouth.

B You dont mind if I eat, do you?

G Oh no, not at all.

Theres a knock on the door.

Ho Bilbo!

Bilbo hides.

Ho Bilbo Baggins!

B (hisses) Im not at home!

He continues to set up the kitchen table.

B Ive got to get away from these confounded relatives hanging on the bell! They never give me a moments peace! I want to see mountains again! Mountains, Gandalf! And then find somewhere quiet where I can finish my book. Oh, tea!

G So, you mean to go through with your plan, then?

B Yes, yes. Its all in hand. All the arrangements are made.

Bilbo starts to pour water into the tea pot, Gandalf opens the lid.

B Oh, thank you.

G Frodo suspects something.

B ‘Course he does! Hes a Baggins. Not some block-headed Bracegirdle from Hardbottle.

G You will tell him, wont you?

B Yes, yes.

G Hes very fond of you.

B I know. Hed probably come with me if I asked him. I think in his heart Frodo is still in love with the Shire. The woods, the fields, the two rivers.

Bilbo has been looking outside, but now he turns to Gandalf, looking quite serious. While he talks, he fingers the Ring in his pocket, which Gandalf notices.

B Im old Gandalf. I know I dont look it but Im beginning to feel it in my heart. I feel thin. Sort of stretched. Like butter scraped over too much bread. I need a holiday, a very long holiday. And I dont expect I shall return. In fact, I mean not to.

Hobbiton

Gandalf and Bilbo are sitting on a bench, smoking pipe while they overlook Hobbiton.

Bilbo Old Toby. The finest weed in the Southfarthing.

Bilbo puffs a ring of smoke and Gandalf follows with a ship that sails through it.

Bilbo Gandalf, my old friend...This will be a night to remember!

Bilbos party

The party is well underway and Gandalfs fireworks work their magic. Bilbo is working through a line of party-goers.

Bilbo Hello. Hello. Lovely to see you! Welcome. Welcome!

Frodo is also at the party. He sees Sam sitting on a bench, looking at Rosie Cotton, who is dancing. Frodo walks up to him.

F Go on, Sam. Ask Rosie for a dance.

S I think I’ll just have another ale.

Sam looks away from Rosie, but Frodo turns him round again.

F Oh no, you don’t. Go on.

Frodo pushes Sam to Rosie and laughs as she pulls him into a dance. Gandalf meanwhile has outdone himself.

Gandalf Whoa!

Huge fireworks go off. Meanwhile Bilbo has got an audience of Hobbit children in rapt attention.

Bilbo There I was, at the mercy of three monstrous trolls! And they were all arguing amongst themselves about how they were going to cook us. Whether it be turned on a spit, or whether they should sit on us one by one and squash us into jelly!

The children look afraid.

Bilbo They spent so much time arguing the whether tos and why fors, that when the sun’s first light cracked over the top of the trees...poof!

The children start and gasp.

Bilbo It turned them all to stone!

Gandalf is at the top of his game, laughing as he gathers fireworks probably even more terrific. When hes left the cart, Merry appears, eating an apple. He signals Pippin to get onto Gandalf’s cart.

M Quickly!

Merry helps Pippin get in the cart. He crashes into the fireworks. Gandalf meanwhile is setting off more of them, spiraling past Hobbit children.

G Whoa! Off they go.

Pippin is grabbing one of the fireworks.

M No, no! The big one! The big one!

P Done.

They hurry inside a tent. The dragon-shaped firework is sticking into the ground.

M You’re supposed to stick it in the ground!

P It is in the ground!

M Outside!

P It was your idea!

The firework goes up, the sheer force of it throwing Merry and Pippin onto the ground. It turns into a huge golden dragon, which flies straight up in the sky, maw open. The dragon then swerves round and heads right for the Hobbits. They see it and run, or throw themselves to the ground. Frodo also sees it. He looks at Bilbo, who hasnt.

F Bilbo? Bilbo! Look out for the dragon!

B Dragon? Nonsense! There hasn’t been a dragon in these parts for a thousand years--

Frodo pulls Bilbo to the ground, just in time. The dragon flies overhead, then to the horizon, where it bursts into a beautiful firework. The Hobbits smile and applaud. Merry and Pippin appear, both with torched hair and covered in soot.

M That was good. Let’s get another one!

Gandalf comes behind and grabs their ears. Pippin and Merry look up at him, wincing.

G Meriadoc Brandybuck. And Peregrin Took. I might have known.

Merry and Pippin are washing the dishes as punishment, with Gandalf keeping a keen eye on them. Other Hobbits are sitting or standing in front of a platform, upon which stands Bilbo.

Ht Speech, Bilbo! Speech!

F Speech!

B My dear Bagginses and Boffins! Tooks and Brandybucks! Grubbs, Chubbs, Hornblowers, Bolgers, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots!

Ho Proudfeet!

Bilbo dismisses the remark with a wave of his hand.

B Today is my one hundred and eleventh birthday!

Ht Happy birthday!

B Alas, eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable Hobbits.

The Hobbits cheer.

B I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

There is silence as the Hobbits look at each other, most of them not getting what Bilbo meant, which was of course the idea.

Bilbo I...uh...I h-have things to do.

Bilbos expression has changed. Frodo notices and begins to realize something unusual is going on.

B (whispers) I’ve put this off for far too long. (louder) I regret to announce, this is the end! Im going now. I bid you all a very fond farewell.

Bilbo looks at Frodo.

B (whispers) Goodbye.

Bilbo puts on the ring and vanishes. Frodo looks surprised, Gandalf too, but starting to put two and two together.

Ht Ooh!

Bilbo, invisible, leaves the party and returns to Bag End.

Bag End

Bilbo is laughing when he reappears again, satifisfied with himself. He flips the Ring and puts it in his pocket.

G I suppose you think that was terribly clever?

Bilbo starts, not having seen Gandalf. He dismisses the reproach and starts packing.

B Come on Gandalf! Did you see their faces?

G There are many magic rings in this world, Bilbo Baggins, and none of them should be used lightly.

B It was just a bit of fun.

He looks at Gandalf, who remains somewhat stern.

B Oh, you’re probably right, as usual. You will keep an eye on Frodo, won’t you?

G Two eyes. As often as I can spare them.

B I’m leaving everything to him.

G What about this ring of yours? Is that staying too?

B Yes, yes. It’s in an envelope over there on the mantelpiece.

Bilbo is facing away from the fireplace when he stops short and pats his coat pocket.

B No, wait, its...here in my pocket.

Gandalf, who was about to take the envelope, turns. Bilbo takes out the Ring and looks at it.

B Heh, Isn’t that, isn’t that odd though?

Bilbos expression changes.

B Yet, after all...why not? Why shouldn’t I keep it?

G I think you should leave the ring behind, Bilbo. Is that so hard?

B Well no...

As Bilbo speaks, his face and voice change, as if a madness seems to possess him.

B ...and yes! Now it comes to it, I don’t feel like parting with it. Its mine, I found it. It came to me!

G There’s no need to get angry.

Bilbo turns on Gandalf.

B Well, if I’m angry, it’s your fault!

Bilbo looks away again, caressing the Ring.

B Its mine. My own. My precious.

G Precious? Its been called that before, but not by you.

B What business is it of yours what I do with my own things!

G I think you’ve had that ring quite long enough.

B You want it for yourself!

Gandalf suddenly becomes angry.

G Bilbo Baggins!

Bilbo snaps out of it, scared by Gandalfs thundering voice. The ceiling of Bag End behind him changes to a dark sky.

G Do not take me for some conjurer of cheap tricks!

Gandalf returns to normal again.

G I am not trying to rob you. I’m trying to help you.

Bilbo cries and hugs Gandalf. Gandalf kneels down and holds Bilbos shoulders.

Gandalf All your long years we’ve been friends. Trust me as you once did. Let it go.

Bilbo You’re right, Gandalf. The ring must go to Frodo.

Bilbo goes to the door, holding his walking stick.

B Its late, the road is long. Yes, it is time.

Bilbo opens the door.

Gandalf Bilbo?

Bilbo Hmm?

Gandalf The ring is still in your pocket.

Bilbo Oh, yes...

Bilbo pulls out the ring from his pocket. He stares at it on his palm, struggling with with the power of the Ring, even though hes not aware of it. But it hasnt gotten a strong enough hold on him yet and he lets it to slip out of his hand. It lands with a loud thud. Bilbo hurries out the door. He turns on the road and looks at Gandalf, who stands in the doorway.

B I’ve thought of an ending for my book. And he lived happily ever after, to the end of his days.

G And I’m sure you will, my dear friend.

B Goodbye, Gandalf.

G Goodbye, dear Bilbo.

B (singing) The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began.

G Until our next meeting.

Gandalf goes back in. He stands in front of the Ring and looks down at it. He reaches down to pick it up, but right before his fingers touch the Ring, he sees in a flash the Eye of Sauron.

In July of 17, Hitlers Nazi party mounted an exhibition of confiscated art, called Entartete Kunst meaning Degenerate Art. Especially hard hit was the modern art division of the Berlin National Gallery, which lost 16 paintings, 8 sculptures, and 4 drawings. It showcased and made a mockery of the work of contemporary artists such as Max Beckman, Emil Nolde, Otto Dix, Oskar Kokoschka, and many others. The exhibition was intended to show the public the insanity, atrocity, and corruption of the modern art movement. Artists included in the show, many of whom are now recognized as modern masters, were depicted as demented, and deranged.

The exhibit opened in Munich and then traveled to eleven other cities in Germany and Austria. In each installation, the works were poorly hung and surrounded by graffiti and hand written labels mocking the artists and their creations. On May 1, 18, the seizure without compensation of degenerate art was legalized ex post facto. At the same time, avant-garde artists living in Germany were forbidden to paint. To obtain foreign currency, four German art dealers were appointed to find foreign customers for some of the degenerate art. Most of the remainder was sent to a gallery in Lucerne for international sale. From 17 until 140 over four million people throughout Germany and Austria viewed the exhibit. Hitler used the attack on art to further German anti-Semitic feelings. The seized works were charged with degeneracy, and confiscated to “purify” German culture. Discarded as degenerate German expressionism has found its place once again in the art world. Connoisseurs have bought up works tossed aside by the Germans.

A German commented, “The Nazis, in spite of themselves, gave us a chance to become acquainted with the crème of modern art, all in one place.”

From your reading of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, how appropriate would you say the musical reference in the title is?

The musical reference in the title is appropriate to the novel because it helps sum up one of its central paradoxes which is war and life or peace. While ‘Captain’ conveys the difficult situation Corelli is in the Mandolin can be seen as a symbol of life and optimism in the novel and offers a sense of hope as it can bridge all gaps caused by war.

Music is shown to be a life force throughout the novel by the associations de Bernieres makes with it, particularly set against the dark contrast of war. As the title suggests the character of Corelli and music are inseparable concepts and so the reader is invited to see this character as another force of good. A major part of the novel is concerned with the love affair between Captain Corelli and Pelagia and so we are able to appreciate its importance to their relationship and the close affinity that music has with love in general. Corelli is able to illustrate his love and admiration for Pelagia through music

‘It was a march, a march of a proud woman who persecutes war with hard words and kindness.’

livepaperhelp.com

Through music Corelli can express one of the aspects of Pelagia that he most loves- her complexity.

Music is associated with children and childlike behaviour. Corelli is an exuberant character who appreciates the power of laughter and enjoys playing with Lemoni. De Bernieres shows the power of music in allowing a person to retain their innocence and appreciation of the simple pleasures of life.

Music is also associated with inspiration. Pelagia has an epiphany when she realises that music is ‘an emotional and intellectual odyssey.’ For the first time Pelagia is inspired by music, recognises its true value and this is given greater significance as it parallels her realisation of her love for Captain Corelli. Music is shown to be inspiring in its self but on another level can prove a catalyst for revelation and greater knowledge of ones self in general.

Music is also a symbol of strings for heart strings as they are Captain Corelli’s salvation in medical sense

‘I used some of your mandolin strings to link the bone.’

Corelli’s association with music is made complete as the mandolin becomes physically part of him in order to keep him alive. The strings are a force of life, working against death and this is particularly significant in the context of war. Music is symbolic of the human spirit and its ability to survive in the face of adversity.

As well as beginning an inseparable part of the character of Corelli, music is also linked with woman to highlight its force for good and redemption. Pelagia is described as a mandolin

“I brush her strings, softly, and I say to her “how can you be made of wood?” just as I see Pelagia and ask without speaking, “Are you truly made of flesh.”’

Pelagia and women in general in the novel are shown as having an enduring strength that overcomes difficulties and hardship. Pelagia survives the war, withstands separation from her lover and the death of her father to ultimately be rewarded with a second youth at the end of the novel. Women are shown as holding the family together with Dresola and Pelagia forming a female trio with Antonia to afford her a secure upbringing.

The musical reference in the title fixes novel in the romantic tradition of love being inspired through music and the rule of the heart over the head. Pelagia can not resist being seduced by Corelli’s music, just as ultimately she can not help falling in love with him

‘She watched his face and forgot to attend any more to the music; she wanted to share the journey.’

The beauty of the music removes Pelagia from her present situation allowing her to forget her worries, feel pleasure and so her still sub conscious love for Captain Corelli grows. The music enables Pelagia to forget the war and that Corelli is on the opposing side

‘The trouble was that he was no longer just an Italian, he was Captain Corelli, who played the mandolin and was very charming.’

Music provides the platform for the two to fall in love as it transports them to another level of reality their own reality together.

Music is shown to be a tool for communication. Corelli feels terrible guilt for his part in the war particularly because he feels so at home at Greece and he ponders the contradictory nature of the World

‘What have I got against the British that I have had to come to Greece? Pelagia is right, but who will be the first to say it? So far only Antonia has said it, ringing with ‘Pelagia’s March’, singing beneath my fingers.’

Corelli’s music is given real poignancy as we are able to appreciate that it expresses his inner most feelings -what he feels that he can not even voice. . In this sense music is a miracle which cannot be explained rationally. It is given an almost spiritual quality with its power to communicate when words can not be found

Beautiful imagery and language is used both to describe Corelli’s music and also the mandolin its self

‘the rounded belly of it was composed of tapering strings of close-grained maple, separated skilfully by thin fillets of rosewood.’

The reader is able to appreciate that the mandolin is an extraordinary thing of beauty

and its music to be ‘exquisite’ as the language invites us to visualise and hear it. Set against graphic, brutal language used to describe the realities of war de Bernieres acts to make the difference between war and the civilised virtues of harmony, calm and beauty all the more shocking.

Music is also used as a narrative device as it parallels action and mood. In a stream of lyrical consciousness we are able to trace Corelli’s growing obsession with Pelagia through his passionate rhapsody on music and love

‘Pelagia shares these simple, merry chords. She plays with the cat and laughs, and it is sol. She raises an eyebrow when she catches me observing, and pretends to reproach me and reprove me for the guilt of admiration, and it is doh.’

Corelli makes the connection between Pelagia and music when he describes her like a piece of music and so we are able to fully appreciate the depth of his feelings as she becomes his other great passion.

In the novel music is also shown to be an antidote to engines of destruction. When Corelli and the other Italian soldiers are being taken to be executed Corelli suggests that they all begin to sing

“‘Why not sing in the face of death? ‘Let’s sing, boys,’ he repeated. ‘Carlo sing.’”

For him the need for music in his most desperate hour is overwhelming. Music can be seen as a solace as it sooths souls in turmoil. It has an ability to transport people out of their present situation and find strength within themselves

‘It was easier to hum than to dwell on death; it gave the heart something to do.’

The power of music is emphasised as it floods the minds of the soldiers providing them with the strength to face death with dignity and so music can be seen as inspiring acts of heroism.

Music also brings out human and individual side of the ‘good Nazi’ as an antidote to his uniformity of ideology. When Gunter is first introduced he is clearly a young boy lost to the Nazi regime. He emptily repeats Nazi slogans and is the stereotypical Nazi soldier. However, Corelli is able to expose the ‘real’ Gunter by making him a member of La Scala and allowing him to join in in some good hearted fun. Gunter is in fact not a typical Nazi shown through his appreciation off music which sets his soul free. However, it is significant that he can not sing, signalling that ultimately he is ‘destined to betray with a Judas kiss.’

The novel is post-modern in its undermining of certainties and so the musical reference in the title is highly significant as it features continually as a positive contrast to war. Where war is shown to be destructive, music is shown to be healing. War takes away human life but music can be seen as a life force.

Battle of the Sexes

The most captivating detail concerning a Victorian woman is her ability to be alluring modest, and mysterious. Women of the eighteenth century pride themselves on being presentable, and respectable to themselves and their appearance. Jonathan Swift uses Victorian women’s modesty as a mechanism to humiliate publicly, as he wrote The Lady’s Dressing Room. This piece of work would offend any woman living in this era, not to mention most women writers, which is why Lady Mary Wortley Montagu wrote The Reasons that Induced Dr. Swift to Write a Poem Called “The Lady’s Dressing Room.” Montagu included tantalizing details of experiences in Swifts life, as evidence to prove what she believes, is the reason for his cynicism against the female race.

In Swift’s poem he takes the narrators position, using characters for the basis of his reasoning. Strephon, who is mesmerized by Celia’s beauty, believes her to be a “Goddess” (). As he unlawfully explores her chamber he is amazed at the findings. He finds that Celia is just an angel in disguise. Strephon’s eyes could no longer view her as the “sweet and cleanly” (18) lady that all have perceived her to be. The idiom applies “When you go searching, you might find what you are looking for,” meaning that Strephon was undoubtedly looking for something that he did not want to find.

live paper help

Swift makes use of vivid descriptions, as proof for the rubble found. Strephon found her brush full of hair and “dirt” (1) and the pot, which she “spits” (4) in is full of

“The Scraping of her Teeth and Gums” (40). Her exposed panty hose are soiled as a result of “stinking toes” (5), and the “Colifs and Pinners” (5) smelt as though they have been in use for more than a week. The tainted smells of the room “turn’d poor Strephon’s bowels” (4). Strephon continues to explore, as he looks into her “Chest” (70) only to find a horrid sight her excrements, this disgusted him so that he pondered why she could not keep “Those Secrets of the hoary deep!” (8). The use of vivid descriptions in this poem explains how Swift depicts the female race as phony, and inhuman.

Montagu disputes Swift’s writing as she writes a contradiction to his point of view. In Swift’s poem he tries to portray misconceptions concerning women, beauty, and respect. Montagu retaliates using her own writing and a vivid description to prove Swift is bitter and vindictive because of his shortcomings. Montagu mocks Swifts appearance and philosophy as having “little reason” (46) meaning that he has no merits about himself (he is what he is). She points out his pessimistic tone toward women, as the direct result of his rejections.

Montagu describes Swift as a hunter, a hunter of delinquency comparing him to a “hound” (55). He approaches a prostitute to be faced with his own inconsistency. Swift’s excuse is the “dirty smock, and stinking toes” (70) being so close that the smell has interrupted him in performing. The prostitute proceeds to blame him for his age of “sixty-odd” (74). Swift threatens to write about her “dressing room” (4), the prostitute

strikes back as she tells him his threat means nothing, it will just be extra paper to use when she “shits” (7).

Montagu writes in a sarcastic tone, seeking revenge on Swift ideas of beauty and the female race. Swift uses a vindictive tone to be vicious, as his bitterness towards women is portrayed throughout his poem. He uses Strephon’s character to dictate his own ideas upon the reader, placing negativity upon women of the Victorian age, as a result of his own insecurities.

Montagu’s poem specifies frustration, the frustration she feels when faced with Swifts poem. Montagu accuses Swift of using his impotency as an ulterior motive to his writings. Swift publicly chastises and humiliates women as a form of revenge for his insecurities. Both Montagu and Swift express revenge, Swift revenges against women and Montagu revenges against Swift’s ideal of a modest woman.

Swift and Montagu are obviously battling over the sexes, for reasons indicated throughout both of their poems. Swift negatively strikes at women and their grooming habits, as he publicly reveals them in his poem, and Montagu portrays revenge as she focuses on Swift being a cynical and bitter man who places blame on others as a result of his own shortcomings.

Critical analysis on American literature

I analyzed a selected poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson titled “Bacchus” written in 1847. In this poem I believe that he accurately depicted a metaphorical piece about everyone buying into things that weren’t worth buying into, and jading their chance to boost themselves further in life. It sounds much like today, but was more realistic in the 1800’s because it was spread by people and writings, real experiences, not television etc.

live paper help

Emerson starts out the poem with “Bring me wine, but wine which never grew”.

This to me expresses his need to thirst for things, which were true and solid. Truth is a reoccurring theme in many of Emerson’s literary works. He wants knowledge, but things that have never been thought of before, ideas not yet conceived and put forth into motion in the world. He continues the poem with “Let its grapes the morn salute from a nocturnal root, which feels the acrid juice of Styx and Erebus”. This represents the evil side of the world Emerson saw. He sensed that when people delved into things to gain more insight and connotation, they were withdrawn. He uses “grapes” again to show that this is linked to his first advance towards attempting to render new worldly ideas.

All throughout the poem “Bacchus”, Emerson uses wine to represent the “thirst” that people (mainly him) had for new, yet inspiring, not flippant, things in the world. He wrote “We buy ashes for bread; we buy diluted wine; give me of the true…”. As I said before he used truth a lot, as a pure term to represent great knowledge, which he thought everyone could do with some taking of. “We buy ashes for bread…”. This statement means they took part in things they didn’t need. They accept authorities, and life “ingredients” that aren’t needed in the mix. “Diluted wine” Is them taking part in watered down truths. Things that weren’t wholly right and important to help them to become who they needed to be in their walk of life.

My favorite excerpt from “Bacchus” “Among the silver hills of heaven draw everlasting dew; wine of wine; Blood of the world…” This expresses Emerson’s firm belief in there being a determinant knowledge out there, only to be sought by one’s inner self. Wine is again representing (a metaphor for) knowledge, or things we need to know. This knowledge, to him, is among “the silver hills of heaven”. It is “the everlasting dew” as he sees that will become “the blood of the world”, an item that will revitalize anyone who draws on it.

In the last verse of poetry, Emerson introduces remembrance, something he shows as helping save the great thinkers of the world. Bacchus is the name of the remembering wine, and he explains it will be used to save the loss of men and himself. “The memory of ages quenched; Give them again to shine; a dazzling memory revive;”. He spiels about the time taken over the years to compile such a vast expanse of knowledge that quenches the great, and will always be there for them to open. But it is still built upon a memory.

This poem which Emerson wrote in 1847, strongly draws on the Persian poet, Hafiz’s, way of using “wine” as a symbol for intellectual freedom. Emerson always felt that people should use their entire mind to their advantage, especially when reading. To just envelop one’s self into the piece. He attached to this poem a note, which read, “The man who is his own master knocks in vain at the doors of poetry”.

The day was coming, my feelings were getting nervous, scared, more like terrified.

Mixed feelings were coming alive in me when I thought about going to school also how I felt about experiencing a new and different life.

At the age of twelve my life was shifted. First day of school came walking onto the campus it was a whole different feeling than what I was used to. New and different faces turned as I walked down the loud, echoing halls. The mass amounts of students of my age talking, laughing and enjoying school. Made me feel that I was not going to ever succeed in school. My biggest fear was being held back. I didn’t want to be the oldest person in my class. I wanted to go on with the people of my own age.

Six hours of school time was a long time, I always looking at the clock to see the time for the day to be over to go home. Staying at home was the only thing I wanted. When I got home I wanted the time to stop. I did not want the time to go on, my parents asked how school was. I just told them that I did not want to go to school and that was not fitting in. no one talked to me and all I wanted was to go back home into my room and hope that everything will go away somehow.

When I read “Half a pound of ham,” by Bernadete Piassa. I felt that she and I had the same feelings. I was doing well in school and with the schoolwork. I would just concentrate on learning the new materials I was being introduced to. I would always practice talking and making my English speaking skills more clear for others to understand.

In the never-ending search process, trying to make the Warcraft Lebanese Community grow bigger and larger, here we are again, after almost weeks of planning, studying and measuring, ready to take the next step ahead.

So far, in a matter of few months, the Warcraft community has known many tournaments and challenges, the 6 major ones took place at DomNet Cyber Caf and they were all succefull, and the finest example would be Feudal War V.

However, although the Feudal Wars and the C.O.K are keeping the community busy, a big gap of time is still available for us to use and enjoy, this is how it all began...

On a cold night, applepie and I, after having our regular breakfast at Sea Sweet at 55 am, headed to my place to have our morning coffee... and you know what kind of conversation could take place between extremely tired guys at nearly 6 in the morning... well, no, i guess you dont ... instead of a normal everyday talk, we were talking about Warcraft, and all of a sudden applepie jumps off the couch (or was it maybe a chair??) as if someone pinched him in the ass (which i didnt)... anyway, he came up with the most brilliant idea concerning the Warcraft Community. This is how DWL began, this is how it saw the light for the very first time.

livepaperhelp.com

1- Who, What, where and when is DWL?

Domnet Warcraft League, is, of course, a league. But not just any league.

DWL is one big league, consisting of 4 related mini leagues

1 vs 1 league

vs leagues ( leagues)

vs league

DWL will of course be held at DomNet, organized by applepie and Insomnia, starting on December 0 00 till August 0 004.

Schedules will be released on a monthly basis, showing all games to take place in that month. On the 1st of each month, titles (such as Most Improved Player, Best Game Played , etc ...) results and reports of the major changings that occured will be released with a cd containing replays of all the games that were played on the previous month.

PS No one will be allowed to view any replays at any time in DomNet. Replays will be automatically saved on our servers and kept away for the monthly cd. You can only have the replays when they are released on the cd or uploaded on the 1st of every second month, which means, on the 1st of February we will release the cd covering round 1, from December 0 till January 0.

- How to participate?

Simple, a fee of 5000 L.L. per player every month. Fees should be paid every 0th of each month.

PS this fee allows the player to participate in all 4 leagues and gives him access to all special events at DomNet related to this league (e.g Random vs), of course, excluding Feudal War and C.O.K series.

- Are all 4 leagues related?

Yes, of course they are. Players will have their points added from the sum of all 4 leagues, with the vs league having the lowest number of games, thus lowest number of points generated. So participating in the vs league is necessary, because it will actually have a certain effect on each players total points, although this effect is somehow minor.

4- Points System

1vs1 win = 4 points ; Loss = 1 point

vs win = points ; Loss = 1 point

vs win = 5 points ; Loss = 1 point (less games obviously)

example Lets say Merlin, in round 1, won games and lost 1 in 1vs1 ( points awarded), and won games and lost in both leagues vs (11 points awarded) and won 1 game in vs (5 points awarded)... in that case, his total points in round one will be the sum of all 4 leagues, +11+5 = 5 points awarded.

5- What do you mean by leagues vs?

Yes, leagues in vs mode, each player has to have a different partner in both. Example xterm is applepies teammate in league 1, in league he is not allowed to participate with the same teammate as in league 1, so both have to participate in league with different partners, ie xterm and insomnia, applepie and Raymeck in league . (You are not allowed to have the same partner in both leagues, this is to enhance teamplay and generate more strategies and play techniques).

6- Will DWL follow a Home/Away system?

Definitely, its a league after all.

Both Home and Away games will be played in DomNet though, but the Host or Home Team/Player has the advantage to pick his map.

So, you play each player/team twice, when youre hosting you get to pick the map, and when your opponent is hosting he will have the pick.

PS You wont play the same player/team twice on the same day or same week, not even same month. There will be enough time in between Home and Away games so that players have enough time to study their first game and try to improve it.

7- Do I get to pick any map I want when I am host?

Sure, but not any map, the organizers of DWL have picked 1 maps that should satisfy all players tastes and game styles.

4 maps for the 1vs1 league

- Turtle Rock

- Lost Temple (old)

- The Two Rivers

- Twisted Meadows

4 maps for both vs leagues

- Gnoll Wood

- Twisted Meadows

- Wetlands

- Avalanche

4 maps for the vs league

- Gnoll Wood

- Upper Kingdom

- Bloodstone Mesa

- Murgul Oasis

PS These maps have been chosen according to Battle.net use and rankings. Organizers reserve the right to apply any modification or change on the maps selection according to their own believes or what they see convenient, the patches released and the changes made to the maps in the new patches.

8- What about the Awards!!??

Well, its an 8 months league... still a long way ahead to decide on the prize... but those who have participated in our tournaments do know what quality our prizes are made of. So just wait and see

For any further information dont be shy to ask applepie or Insomnia, in the end, your questions will help us improve and work on any issue that we might have forgotten by mistake.

Please start registering at DomNet Cyber Caf asap, scheduling the games will take a lot of time and time is something we never have...

Regards

Insomnia and applepie.

Self-Managed Work Teams

Self-managed work teams are groups of employee who are responsible for a complete set of tasks and duties which are related to the production of a final product or an on going process.

Self-managed work teams are the wave of the future, It is estimated that “Self-managed teams have been credited with hundreds of millions of dollars, achieving conceptual breakthroughs and introducing unparalleled number of new products” (Elmuti, 17).These teams are formed through interviews and research of all available employees in order to chose the best possible combination of skills. Yandrick (001), Self-managed work teams can be characterized by features such as multiple skills, common purpose, interdependence, authority and accountability. The better a team is fitted with the right skills and elements the greater the results and benefits received by the department or the company as a whole. Self managed work teams should have a clear and identifiable goal, and success measurement in order to achieve the outcome desired by management and succeed at the goal prescribed. Attaran and Nguyen (1) concluded that self-managed work teams are usually more productive and aggressive in their approach to problem solving. Also, when compared to typical hierarchical management, self-managed teams were found to exhibit more enthusiasm, camaraderie and shared responsibility instead of backbiting and protecting information. In addition, whereby self-managed work teams have flexible tasks, multi-skilled, with interchangeable roles and a cohesive work effort, traditional management rigid tasks and specialized skills, fixed roles and divided work efforts.

livepaperhelp.com

According to Attaran and Nguyen (1), team members should have a variety of skills and experiences and are encouraged to develop new ones to increase their knowledge and their value to the team. Teams permit performance and learning at the same time. There is no better way to become a learning organization than to have a team based structure which strives on people learning from each others. Also, self-managed work teams are expected to “lead to improved working conditions, greater opportunities for expression, self-development for participating employees…, to increase productivity, increase market share, improve pricing, and cost reduction” (Elmuti 17). Work teams represent a unique set of individuals with different knowledge, skills and

Self-Managed Work Teams

attributes. It is like a football team where you have many players with different skills that all have to come together to form a viable team that can compete. It is very important that differences be taken into account when dividing up tasks among members. Although each member of a self-managed team has a unique goal and a team goal, each member has to find a way to achieve his or her individual goal while still attaining the team goal (Attaran & Nguyen, 1).

Even though many companies achieved great results using self-managed work teams, there are significant challenges associated with the implementation of self-managed teams. Duhaime and Renn (18), self-managed work teams achieving the highest degrees of success received a great deal of training prior to implementation. Training can be expensive and will divert employees from their daily responsibilities which will add to the total costs. Self-managed teams are not a quick fix to an organization problems. It is a long costly process and an on-going learning process for all the employees which can create a lot of problems because many employees are not comfortable learning and updating their skills constantly. In addition, management could be threatened by their loss of power to work teams and could resist change. And, not all workers are comfortable working in groups and under scrutiny of peers and it is hard sometimes to limit free-riders because of the variety of skills and the self managed nature of the teams.

Self-managed work teams are the wave of the future and a must for any company or organization aiming to succeed in the business world. Self-managed teams, although are costly to implement and takes a long time before the company reaps its rewards, are without a doubt a highly productive management tools.

Service Above Self

Giving your self to service is life’s true fulfillment. There is no better feeling than helping the less fortunate. I myself have had hands on experience with community service and it has changed me in miraculous ways. Last summer I started volunteering at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital. Eager to help I went in with my eyes closed and learned lessons I thought I would never learn.

At the beginning of my journey I saw this hospital like any other one, one that is designed to cure the ill. But this hospital is in a league all its own; putting smiles on the patients faces regardless of how sick they really are. This is a place in which sick children can be themselves regardless of prejudice and stereotyping. The world is a cruel place and these poor innocence beings just need a place to forget their worries and Joe DiMaggio is a place to let loose.

Many of my tasks at the hospital where hands on. Reading, playing, arts and crafts, or just simply offering moral support is a volunteer’s top priority. Just after a couple of weeks at the hospital, I became a regular. Patients were beginning to ask about me and were inquiring when I would come and play. The feeling of being helpful encouraged me and I began spending more and more time at the hospital. I would visit patients on my days off and became quite close to many of them through the weeks.

livepaperhelp.com

On an ordinary day at the hospital, I met a boy around my age named Steven. Steven was very shy and kept to himself and for some reason he decided to confide in me. We became great friends and I saw him every time I went to the hospital. One day he decided to come clean and he confessed to me that he had been diagnosed with cancer- at that precise moment my heart broke into a thousand pieces. How could this happen to such a wonderful person? I know that God does everything for a reason, but I could help but blame him. Here was a boy of about 16 years of age with a terminal illness, a boy that still hadn’t experienced life fully, someone with so much potential- it just make me feel horrible. I couldn’t stand it and I avoided Steven for weeks, I couldn’t find the courage to face him and I knew I had to be strong for him. I put my selfishness away and focused on Steven’s needs.

His therapy began and I was there for him every step of the way. I gave myself to him, offering support and most of all my friendship. The weeks passed and his therapy was beginning to be a nightmare, his hair fell out and he lost that twinkle in his eyes. He was a different person; as if this illness had not only taken over his body, but also is soul. His dazzling personality faded along with his health, it got to the point that he could no longer walk and had to travel around in a wheelchair. He had to stop going to school and all of his friends had forgotten about him for the exception of his family and I. I stood strong although I saw defeat in his eyes.

After two months, Steven began to recuperate. Although the cancer was not completely gone, he was almost cured. With the help of gifted doctors Steven was on his way to a normal life. God had performed a miracle and I was present the entire time. With rest and more therapy he was back to himself. He started school again and he got to go home. The day he left the hospital I was filled with complex emotions. I was so blissful that he was okay, but I was gloomy because I was losing my best friend. We said our goodbyes and he was on his way. I never saw Steven again, but I know in my heart that he is in good health and he will live a long happy life.

Steven was only one of the many miracles I have met while volunteering at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital, and hopefully there will be many more. Even though I thought my efforts at the hospital were useless they are in fact helpful. Any bit of moral support for a child at their moment of need is priceless. To put a smile on their faces is the best thrill in this ever so superficial world.

My experience has changed me; not only am I thankful for my health, but this has taught me to value it. There are so many unfortunate people in this world and we take it for granted everyday of our lives. For once we as a society need to make an impact and help those that are less privileged. Offer if only a portion of yourself to the service of others, the benefits are endless.

nothingTips for Good Writing

When writing a narrative academic paper there is a basic style with which you need to comply. Along with the TUI style guide you have in your introductory information, I have certain expectations.

There is more to writing than simply formatting the document properly and making your footnotes conform to a specific standard. There is more to writing than simply meeting the MLA guide to style and having decent grammar and spelling. Learning the basics of academic writing will give you the foundation you need to create a successful dissertation or published article.

The methods presented below are universal and fundamental. These principles are true for good writing in any form. But the requirements are basic. In time you will outgrow this simple formula. But for now, I want to make sure that we can meet the basic standards for clarity of expression and rigor in argumentation.

A good paper has three parts

I. Introduction

II. Body

III. Conclusion

This sounds simple, I know, but it is rarely presented the first time. The old saying tell me what you are going to say, say it, tell me what you said is the hallmark of basic writing skills. Now lets take each element in turn.

I. Introduction

In the introduction you need to have three elements the problem, your answer, and how you will prove it.

First, tell me what the problem is what are we talking about? I need to know the surrounding issue.

Second, what is your answer to the question? In one sentence, answer the question you were asked. This is the most important part of your paper. Everything else depends on it. You cannot ask yourself too many times, what is my point? Everything in your paper is there for one reason only that is, to prove that your thesis is correct.

Third, tell me how you will prove that your point is correct. In order of importance, tell me what your major reasons are for believing your thesis to be true.

At the end of your introduction I should be able to stop and, at that point, know what the problem is, what your answer to the problem is, and how you are going to prove it.

II. Body

In the body of your paper I want you to argue for why your answer to the question is correct. Discuss one point at a time and explain each point thoroughly. Use the material you have researched, facts you have compiled, personal experience, and speculation if you must. I want to see you prove your answer to be correct.

One point per paragraph! In each paragraph you will have a thesis statement at the outset. What is the point of that paragraph? The point of each paragraph (you may have more than one paragraph per point, although not the other way around) must be clear in how it proves your thesis to be correct.

A good paragraph has three elements the point; the explanation; the conclusion. In each paragraph I want to know what point you are making, your thorough explanation for it, and the manner in which it proves your thesis to be correct. Detail your explanations and clearly show how they prove that you are right.

III. Conclusion

A good conclusion is a simple matter. Simply sum up how you proved your thesis to be correct.

Follow these basic guidelines and you will produce a good basic paper. Once you have mastered the fundamental style of argument we can work on making you the next Marcel Proust. Be patient!

International marketing is very important these days; it expands a firm’s market, makes production and distribution economies feasible, and allows companies to explore growth opportunities in other nations and makes them less dependent on the economy in their home base. For our company EDI we choose Europe more precisely European Union countries (England, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Finland), as a target market. The main objective of international marketing in our case is to increase market share in Europe.

Successful businesses have extensive knowledge about their customers and their competitors. Acquiring accurate and specific information about our customers and competitors is a critical first step in market investigation and development of a marketing plan. The market impacts and direct all aspects of the company’s activities and ultimately will lead to success or failure of the business. In developing a market plan, our primary functions are to understand the needs and desires of our potential customers, selection and development of a product that will meet customer needs, development of promotional material that will make the customer aware and ensure of product delivery.

The goal of a market analysis is to determine the attractiveness of a market and to understand its evolving opportunities and threats as they relate to the strengths and weaknesses of the firm. There are few main points why our company is attracted to the EU countries as a target market for foreign marketers.

1. Demography & Geography

- European countries have relative large population,

- High market growth rate

- Urban/rural distribution

- Climate/weather patterns (5 market regions where we want to introduce our product have similar weather patterns, example Latin region Spain, Italy, Portugal-have warm weather all year long)

- Shipping distance/cost, (1 countries are divided into a 5 regions where our bottling company TAUT would be located cutting shipping and distribution costs)

. Political environment

- Similar system of government (in Europe Code Law)

- All of the EU countries are politically stable

- Governmental role in business

- Similar regulations on foreign companies

. Economy

- Overall level of development

- High economic growth

- Currency (same in all 1 countries-Euro Dollar, therefore minimized inflation rate)

- High per capita income & purchasing power

- Involved in foreign trade already

- Balance of trade

4. Society/culture

- Relatively low/same literacy rate

- Very similar education level

- Different languages but all EU countries accepted English as a business language

- Similar business culture

5. Market Access

- Limitation on trade/trade barriers

- Local standards (that is one of the reasons why we divided countries in 5 similar to each other regions)

- Intellectual property protection laws

- Legal issues

6. Product Potential

- Future world wide market size

- Large market for potential growth

- Local production, producers, prices, terms of sales

- Europe has a very competitive environment

A significant experience

Just as some background information, I am a very clumsy person, not withstanding this anecdote. One occurrence at the gym, after a good, full workout lifting chest, biceps, triceps, back, and shoulders, I felt like finishing a good workout with a hard run. I jogged to the locker room and grabbed my CD player. Returning to the treadmill area I tried to find an open treadmill because most were already in use. I picked one of the usual, basic treadmills and put my CD player on the small shelf area the treadmill had and started it and began to run. At first, I had a good, constant pace, but soon after a minute I decided to pick up the tempo. Now I had been jogging for about four good minutes and had a comfortable run going, when suddenly my CD player fell from the shelf. Unfortunately, when my CD player fell off the little shelf area my first intuition was to stop and pick it up. This wouldn’t have been a bad idea had I not been on a treadmill. The instant I stopped to pick up my CD player, my legs were taken quickly out from underneath me. This caused me to land on my face with a tremendous thud followed by me finally gliding off the treadmill, as its belt kept moving. I got up from the ground, physically fine, but with a massively hurt pride. So I did the only thing I could do to make it look natural and not like an accident picked up my CD player, stood up and wiped my knees off, stopped the treadmill, placed the CD player back on the rack area, and started running again. A good intuition should have said, “You’re on a treadmill, you can’t stop running to pick up your CD player. Stop the treadmill, then get it.” I’m lucky enough to have a bad intuition that makes me decide to stop on a moving treadmill, but through it all, I have a good sense of humor and also I’ve learned from my mistakes. Honestly, experiences like this are the most important because when the pride is hurt, it takes real intestinal fortitude to see if one can handle the pressure or if one will crack. I have a strong inner-sensation of pride, but I also have the ability to realize my imperfections and mistakes and to correct them so I can better myself. Furthermore, in being able to tell such a story shows a great amount of self-confidence since I’m telling complete strangers one of my more embarrassing moments. This may seem like a trivial event in life, but it taught me to be more self-confident and that everyone makes mistakes, it’s just how we react to them that matters. Throughout it all, the experience made me a better person; such a small event taught life lessons I’ve benefited from greatly.

SUMMARY

This report will focus on EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), its uses, and its users. In an attempt to learn why EDI is used. I will discuss how EDI works and its components. Because EDI is an integral part of any ERP system, I intend to do a short analysis about an ERP vendor and in conclusion compare two ERP vendors to CMS.

WHAT IS EDI?

Electronic Data Interchange electronic is the exchange of business information between organizations in a standardized structured format. EDI is an integral part of ERP systems. It eliminates the need to re-enter data at either end and does not require human intervention in order to work properly.

Since its introduction, many companies that utilize EDI have benefited from improved productivity. Like most technological advances, EDI was developed to meet a need; the need for faster yet more accurate business information, an essential in today’s “Just in Time” production schedules. The Accredited Standards Committee(ASC), United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Europe Committee for Facilitation of International Trade Procedures and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI); were all integral in maintaining and developing EDI. Most of the Technical input/development was done in the United States.

In order to choose the right vendor, make sure it has all the functionality you require and that it installs as seamlessly as possible with your current systems.
