The early stages of Hominid life were very primitive. They did not have many innovations. Those that they did have were, by today’s standards, extremely primitive. But, that is not to say that they were not important. Innovations made in prehistory times, were some of the most important innovations of all time.

Homo Habilis, a very primitive hominid living from .5 to 1.5 million B.C., were also the least advanced. They were scavengers and could not hunt anything themselves. If a predator made a kill and finished eating, Homo Habilis would walk over and pick off the meat remaining on the bones. This may seem disgusting, but it was all Homo Habilis could do.

Homo erectus, living from 1.8 million to 0,000 B.C., was the second stage in Hominid life. Erectus was much more advanced that that that Habilis. First of all they made the hand axe, which allowed them to hunt themselves. They also learned to created fire. This not only allowed them to cook the meat that they killed, but to also frighten out animals that lived in caves so they could have shelter.

Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus were very different, but they also shared some similarities. They both were omnivores. They both even had fire. While Homo Habilis only had fire when it found it in nature, and having to keep it “Alive”, Homo Erectus could make fire any where it wanted, as long as they had the right materials.

While Hominid life was very primitive, it was also very important. Without the innovations of the Stone Age, we would still be scavengers. And waiting for a lion to finish his meal before going over and feeding on the almost stripped carcass does not sound very appealing.
