No matter where we live, we all know that there are always children playing near their homes. And some of these tract homes have creeks running through them. These are small tributaries leading to larger ones, and eventually leading to rivers or the ocean. Suppose one day we are taking a walk through our neighborhood and we spot children playing near a creek with flowing water, it seems relaxing because it is a warm day. Suddenly, at a far distance we spot a large orange sign that says, “Danger Contaminated Water”. There are many ways that can contaminate our water, such as bad cross connections to water main, street and gutter runoff, and sewer over flows. No matter how our water gets contaminated we ask ourselves, what does that mean? Where did it come from? And why? When we see “Danger Contaminated Water” we should assume the worst.

Spraying pesticide with a garden hose seems like a harmless practice, and usually it is. But if the City’s water supply is interrupted while we are spraying, the pesticide could be drawn back up the hose and into our home drinking water.

The water supply can be interrupted during a water main break or when a water main is shut off for repair. How does the contamination occur?

Write my Essay on Water Pollution

1) The water main is shut off for a repair.

) Water flows out a break or crack in the water main into the soil.

Holguin

) The water in the household lines drains into the water main, which is at a lower elevation

4) The water draining out of the household line creates a siphon effect.

5) The pesticide in the sprayer, or other contaminant, is siphoned through the hose and into the household water lines.

6) The pesticide can even get into the water main system, which services other houses.

The direct link between a contaminant, such as the pesticide, and our drinking water is called a cross connection. I have used the pesticide sprayer as my example, because most cross connections are created by hoses on our property. To eliminate or control cross connections, just follow these practices.

1) Never place the end of a hose where it can create a vacuum and remove contaminants into our drinking water, this includes swimming pools, fish tanks, laundry tubs, and dark room sinks.

) Leave at least one-inch gaps between the end of the hose and a source of contamination, to eliminate the link between the two (air gap fittings can be purchased for sanitary sewer standpipes.)

) Attach a hose connection vacuum breaker to threaded taps.

Our lakes and rivers are becoming desolate due to water with excess fertilizer running into the fresh water and raw sewage going untreated and straight into the surrounding water. Rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans are some of the most beautiful features of our planet. However, we do not always keep our water as clean as we should.

Holguin

Polluted runoff is created unknowingly by individual’s everyday. If contaminants are kept out of the streets, and gutter, much of the ocean and beach pollution can be prevented. Once washed or blown into gutters or storm drains, pollutants are carried through flood control channels to the ocean. Because water from flood control outlets is not treated before reaching the ocean, these pollutants enter the surf at the recreational beaches used by millions each year. Here are some helpful tips to prevent watershed pollution.

1) Remember that what is in our gutter today can be in the streams and oceans tomorrow.

) Report polluting activities

) Call your elected officials and support for strong clean water requirements.

4) Look for and use alternatives to pesticides and other toxic products.

City of San Diego has a large problem with beach closures due to pollutants entering the beaches. The San Diego Bay and the north part of San Diego County are fed by a series of rivers that are short by California’s standards the San Luis Rey, San Diego, Santa Margarita, and Sweetwater Rivers. These rivers and the streams that feed into them make up the arteries in our regions watershed. What flows into and through them ends up on local beaches, bays and wetlands.

San Diego County had by far the largest number of polluted beach closings statewide with a total of 6 closings, plus 1 “extended” and permanent closing. (Water Pollution Pg. 1) High levels of microbial pathogens (disease causing microorganisms) from human and animal wastes are the primary causes of beach closings. These wastes enter coastal waters from municipal sewage treatment

Holguin 4

Plants, combined sewer overflows, sewer overflows, urban storm water systems and a polluted runoff from land. A wide majority related most San Diego beach closings related to “polluted runoff”. With the rising population of San Diego sewage is hard to process, which also causes more runoff. An average of million gallons of raw sewage are diverted into the river and ocean waters everyday. Warning signs are now permanently posted from the south end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach south to the border.

Swimmers can contract illnesses from several pathogens that may be found in polluted waters. Viruses are believed to be the major cause of swimming associated diseases worldwide. Gastroenritis can also be caused by bacteria, and is a common term for a variety of diseases that can have one or all of the following symptoms diarrhea, stomachache, vomiting, and nausea, infection caused by E-coli. Other microbial pathogens found at varying concentrations in recreational water include amoeba and protozoa, which can cause giardiasis, skin rashes, and “pink eye” conditions. AIDS and many other diseases are not carried by enteric pathogens (those that live in the human intestine) in contaminated water. There was one incident at the Saratoga State Park Beach in California, that many swimmers were complaining of nausea and stomach cramps. Paramedics on the scene advised the lifeguards to shut the beach off until further water analysis was performed. Water officials came on site and took various samples of the water. Test results came back positive for fecal coliform, which are human feces. 150 swimmers were affected. After further investigation, it was found that there was a break in an underground sewer line that led into the ocean. The city of Saratoga was sued for millions of dollars. I guess the only advise I have to give when

Holguin 5

thinking about going to the beach, is that to look out for a runoff channel that leads into the beach, stay away from them.

Another way a source can contaminate our water, is by raw sewage overflows. Or treatment plant overflows. Many sewer lines are constructed next to streams to take advantage of the continuous, gradual slopes of stream valleys. Blockages, inadequate carrying capacities, leaking sewer pipes, and power outages at pumping stations often lead to sewage overflows into nearby streams. There are three types of sewer systems

1) They carry storm runoff from streets, parking lots, and roofs through pipes and ditches, and eventually into streams.

) Sanitary sewers carry raw sewage from homes and businesses to wastewater treatment facilities.

) Combined sewers carry a combination of raw sewage and storm water runoff

This picture of a sanitary sewage overflow illustrates a common problem concerning sewage overflows that occur in urban areas (photo #1). Sanitary sewer overflows occur when sewer pipes clog or pumping stations break down (photo #). As shown in photo #1, raw sewage overflows from manholes and leaking pipes into nearby streams rather than backing up into homes and businesses. Sewer pipes clog when something obstructs the normal flow; the leading cause of blockages is grease buildup, which comes from our homes. We ourselves are the culprits of blockages. We simply throw our bacon grease or whatever we use down the kitchen sink. The grease clings to the walls of the pipe and eventually and totally constricts

Holguin 6

the flow. Then all the flow ends up coming out of the manhole. A simple solution to this is for us to use an old coffee can to put the used grease in.

Combined sewer overflows occur during storms when there is more storm water flowing than the pipes leading to a treatment plant can handle. The excess runoff flushes human and industrial wastes, oil, toxic metals, pesticides, and litter into streams.

Water departments have tools and machinery to omit this problem to occur; sometimes it is unavoidable. Sometimes it is not our faults. There are vandals that open up these manhole lids and throw trash and debris down the manhole, which in turn causes a blockage. Water workers have found trees, clothes, tools, and even hoods to vehicles. Water workers never

know what they will find.

We all need to know our whereabouts when our children or us are playing; we need to keep a special eye on places that may carry water contaminants. We need to do our own part in contributing to keep our waters clean. We also need to inform our neighbors if we see anyone dumping anything into our gutters, whether it be hosing down pesticides or draining the coolant from their car engine, we can all make a difference. Also our state authorities need to get involved and enforce the issue of water contamination.

Gun control has always been a heated topic of debate, especially for those who truly believe in the Second Amendment. However, I believe the citizens of Virginia have misinterpreted the meaning of the Second Amendment. While addressing the Virginia Ratification Convention in 1788 (Who is the Militia), Patrick Henry stated

Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect every one who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined. The great object is that every man be armed and everyone who is able may have a gun. (Guns and Gun Control)

I agree that every man should have the right to be armed but laws passed to protect the innocent, should at all times be held to the highest standard. Recent studies show that many illegal gun sells were conducted in Virginia due to the gun show loophole.

In 00, instant background checks in Virginia

stopped ,65 firearms from getting into the wrong hands (Johnson A10). These preventions were due to an instant background check, which is the most important step in buying a firearm. Federal Firearm License holders and unlicensed dealers can buy and sell at these shows without the burden of a background check. However, those who were not stopped purchased at gun shows held around the state. Most people refer to this as a loophole in the state legal system. The loophole is being able to sell guns, knowingly or unknowingly, to anonymous or prohibited buyers. Virginia law prohibits the purchase of guns to those who have been found mentally incapacitated, were involuntarily committed, are under protective order, or have been convicted of drug offenses and felonies (Korwin 1). During an instant background check, these offenses are usually discovered, thus preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands.

A gun show is a temporary market for guns and ammunition. Individuals can attend a gun show to buy, sell or just browse. These gun shows are normally held over a weekend during afternoon and early evening hours. Hunters and gun collectors are especially drawn to gun shows. Shows can be held at an indoor stadium, arena or even a shopping mall. Federally licensed and unlicensed gun dealers may sell, trade or buy at these shows. Currently, the Commonwealth of Virginia does not

require a background check before purchasing a firearm at these shows. Normally, background checks are conducted on those individuals buying handguns or automatic rifles from an established gun dealer on their business premise (Korwin ).

Failing to conduct a background check during these shows contributes to the rising threat of gun violence

Studies have proven that 74 Virginians died from gun violence in 000, of which 5 were eighteen years old or younger. This contributes to Virginias gun death rate being higher than the national average. And states that do not require gun show background checks, such as Virginia,

are more likely to export crime guns to other states. (Educational Fund)

It has also been found that 10 % of guns used in juvenile crime were sold at gun shows (United States). With the statistics clearly pointing the finger towards the gun shows, why hasnt the Virginia legislature passed a new law? It is the Brady Law that was passed by Congress that requires the use of instant background checks. Virginia complied with the Brady Law and requires a background check when conducting transactions with a federally licensed dealer. However, that requirement has not been passed into law for gun shows. Many Virginians feel that

passing this a at a local gun show is in violation of the Second Amendment. If a criminal or someone wanted to buy a gun illegally, they could easily avoid the background check and buy at a gun show.

There are ways to prevent the gun show loophole or at least have a voice in preventing it. Currently, anti-gun and gun control organizations are lobbying the Virginia legislature. They are fighting to prevent this loophole and hopefully see that background checks become mandatory at gun shows. As previously mentioned, the Brady Law, which was passed in 14 (Brady Center) called for the control of handguns. This law was named after press secretary Jim Brady, who was seriously injured during the 181 attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. Jim Brady and his wife Sarah campaigned and fought for the law to be passed. If more Virginians took the same initiative and concern as the Bradys did, I feel a new law could be passed in favor of gun show background checks.

I believe in the Second Amendment and support organizations such as the National Rifle Association. However, I feel guns should be bought and sold legally. They should be controlled in a manner that would prevent them from falling into the wrong hands. The real victims in this loophole are those who are injured or killed with firearms that were illegally placed into the wrong hands. The recent studies conducted over the last few

years clearly prove that gun show sales need to be regulated. They can be regulated by complying with the Brady Law all over Virginia, not just at established premises.

Whether you own guns for hunting, protection, or collecting, that right should not be regulated in any way. What needs to be regulated is the way guns are distributed among the public. Laws have been passed to protect the innocent and keep guns out of the wrong hands. The second amendment guarantees us the right to bear arms and the right to protect our person and property. However, the laws need to be revised to cover every situation possible that would allow a gun to be placed into the wrong hands. Gun shows are the main loophole within the State of Virginia but not the only one. It will take all Virginians to help pass and enforce new laws concerning gun control. When another death or injury occurs due to an illegally sold gun, it is to late to take action.

has on the human body. Since the beginning of time, human have consumed beverages made by fermenting grains or the juices of vine-ripened fruits. The ¡§healthy,¡¨ portly appearance of Western Europeans, often associated with engraving from the time of Charles Dickens¡¦s England and before, can be attributed to the heavy consumption of beer and wine by the populace. Beer, in particular, found its way into nearly every meals as either beverage or ingredient added liberally to soups and porridge (Schivelbusch, 1). It should be understood that this pattern of consumption not only provided food in the form carbonhydrates and calories to an often-impoverished diet but also afforded a much safer beverage to consume than the septic water of the day. Indeed, at the time of the U.S Civil War, beer was often referred to as ¡§ liquid bread¡¨ (Bumham, 1). Until recently, attitudes toward alcohol have relatively benign. For the thousands of years, alcohol has been regarded by society as a temporary escape from reality and the tension of everyday life. People use alcohol to reduce stress, to relax, and to enjoy a good evening. This should be the real purpose of alcohol drinking. However, drinking alcohol is regarded as a negative action by society and the government. This is not because of the action of drinking itself but because of the abuse people undertake with such an action. The average age when youth first try alcohol is 11 years for boys and 1 years for girls. According to research by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, adolescents who begin drinking before 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 1. There are many causes for drinking alcohol. For example, some people have developed a habit and drink alcohol before dinner everyday. Other use alcohol as a method to get rid of their stress. Some people admitted drinking alcohol when they were upset, alone, or bored. Teenagers are so sensitive that after they have a confrontation or an argument, they tend to turn to alcohol to relieve uncomfortable feelings. Moreover, there are many advertisements that shows alcohol as a very attractive drink. This cause a situation in which teenagers think that drinking alcohol is kind of cool and makes them look like adults. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, about 80 percent of high school senior report having used alcohol. On average, alcohol consumption begins around age1. Ten million 1 to 0 year-olds reported drinking at least one alcoholic drink in the 0 days prior to a nationwide survey. Information gathered by Mothers Against Drunk Driving finds students spends $5.5 billion on alcohol annually more than the total amount spent on soft drink, milk, juice, coffee, tea, or books.

It clearly contends that drinking alcohol cause traffic crashes and deaths in teenagers. At sixteen, many young American are legally able to obtain their license. In the United States, drinking and driving accidents account for the number one cause of death among all ages group, especially young adults and late teenagers. Recent statistic indicate that in 18, 8 percent of fatal accidents in the United States were alcohol-related, as 51 percent of fatal accidents on New Year¡¦s Day. Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has indicated that lower fatality rates involving motor vehicle crashes, pedestrian accidents and other injuries occur when the legal drinking age is 1 or over. The national effort to reduce motor vehicle deaths and injuries of youth people between age 15 and 0 has been a success story. Although far too many youth still die tragically in these crashes. Fatality reduction over the past decade, especially those that are alcohol related, have been remarkable. (Meister, 64)

Drinking alcohol will also promote violent crime such as rape, abuse, theft, assault, and murder in youth. When teenagers drink alcohol, they easily get out of control and more likely to assault people or even shoot someone for minor problems. For example, 4 in 10 violent offenders said they were drinking whey they committed their crime, and alcohol-related deaths outnumber death related to illicit drugs from four to one. According to Center on Addiction and Substances Abuse at Columbia University (CASA), 55 percent of the female victims reported consuming alcohol or taking drugs at time of rape, and 7 percent of these women believed their assailants were under the influence of drugs or alcohol; 74 percent of men who claimed to have raped said they were drinking or using drugs at time of the assault, 75 of these men perceived that their victims were using intoxicants as well (McNamara-Meis, 0).

Buy custom Increasing alcohol abuse in youth term paper

There is a clear relationship existed between alcohol use and grade point average (GPA). According to the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, in spite of its illegality, a lot of college students buy and drink alcohol as one of the most common forms of entertainment on campus. For instance, 41 percent of college students confessed not only do they drink alcohol for fun but also they drink five or more drinks at least once in two weeks. Furthermore, at both two year and four year colleges, the more students drink alcohol, the lower grades they tend to get. Students with GPAs of D¡¦s or F¡¦s drank three times as much as those who earned A¡¦s. This was supported by a11 study showing that while A students averaged .6 drinks per week and B students 5.5 drinks, C students averaged 7.6 drinks per week while D or F students averaged 10.6. Almost one-third of the students at four years colleges miss class and nearly one quarter of students cannot do well on a test or project because of alcohol or other drug use (Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, 15).

Finally, should the legal drinking age be lowered? Drinking is a big problem that cause many teenager deaths in the United States. However, many people still argue that the legal age for drinking should be reduced to eighteen. This issues has been brought up many times, but the law hasn¡¦t been changed since the change to twenty-one in 180.The legal drinking age should not be lowered because if it were lowered, the rates of injuries and deaths from traffic crashes, violent crimes, and alcoholism would increase. Even thought the minimum legal drinking age of 1, teenagers still have easy access to alcohol from commercial and social sources, so the existing law of legal drinking age is 1 should be strongly enforced because it prevent injuries and deaths-related to alcohol use among youth. The government figured that if they raise the drinking age, the percentage of deaths by drunk driving would decrease. Statistics show that in recent years, 45,000 people were killed in car accidents, and if alcohol wasn¡¦t involved in those accidents then 10,000 of those who died would have live. If drinking age were eighteen, then this figure would increase by about 1,000 (Olson 4). One of the main reason that the age should not be change back to eighteen is that many eighteen-year-olds are still in high school and can distribute what they purchase to young peers. More than one-third of high school seniors drink to get drunk and if the age was lowered, that number would increase (O¡¦Malley, Johnson, and Bachman, 1).

One o of the biggest problems people cope with today is the increasing of teenager drinkers. The effects of taking alcohol are dangerous domestic violence, crimes, accidents, sexual assault or becoming infected with HIV/AIDS. Youth are our hope; they are the future doctors, lawyers, artists, clergy, engineers, and leaders of this nation, we must take the responsibility to assure that these youths reach their potential. With strong commitment of resources and the recognition that we are responsible, we can combat alcohol abuse on youths and give them the education-academic, spiritual and social that they deserve.

William F. Blissett once said, “Recognition mitigates suffering. Learning always has something of pleasure about it, and so, no matter how painful the realization, how destructive its outcome, there is always an element of gain and growth.” In Shakespeare’s King Lear, characters learn and grow through suffering.

King Lear is only able to see the truth and grow as a person after losing everything that is important to him. At the beginning of the play, King Lear is blinded by his self-image. He is draped in “Robes and furr’d gowns” (IV, vi, 181) that provide him with great pride. After King Lear loses his kingdom and his pride and is in a state of suffering, he becomes enlightened to the equality of mankind. He philosophizes that “man is no more but such a poor, bare, forked animal”. Later on in the play, Cordelia attempts to return Lear to his previous state and puts “fresh garments on him”, but Lear’s enlightenment of truth and equality make it impossible to return to his previous false identity.

Edgar experiences the realization of human equality after being forced to flee the Kingdom and live in disguise. Edgar begins the play as the respected son of a noble man, Gloucester. He is good and is referred to as “Legitimate Edgar” as opposed to his bad and illegitimate brother, Edmund. Edgar is deceived by his evil brother, Edmund. He is forced to flee the Kingdom out of fear of death. Edgar disguises himself as a begger, he announces “Whiles I may ‘scape, I will preserve myself, and am bethought to take the basest and most poorest shape… My face I’ll grime with filth, blanket my loins, elf all my hair in knots, persecutions of the sky…” (II, iii, 5-1). He is forced to leave behind his old life, he says “Poor Turlygod! Poor Tom!’ That’s something yet. ‘Edgar’ I nothing am” (II, iii, 0-1).

Kent is a truthful, loyal and enlightened servent, yet even he learns through suffering. In the first scene, Kent is banished from the Kingdom for speaking out against the King. Lear begs, “Peace, Kent! Come not between the dragon and his wrath”, and Kent replies, “This hideous rashness answer my life my judgement, Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least; Nor are those empty-hearted whose low sound reverbs no hollowness”. During Kent’s punishment and suffering, he learns not to be so rash. He explains to Lear that he had “more man than wit about [him]”. Kent learns to overcome his anger and rashness in order to serve the King. He is described as “Kent, sir, the banish’d Kent; who in disguise follow’d his enemy king, and did him service improper for a slave”.

Hitler only took eighteen months to collapse the Weimar democracy between February 1 and August 14 and to establish his own dictatorship. These changes all began from Hindenburg appoints Hitler as the German Chancellor.

Hitler’s powers increased enormously between 1 to 14. But it wasn’t easy for him, he had to go over some obstacles. His first step to dictatorship was really the most difficult one. At the start of 1, Germany was a democracy, this means the system of the government by the whole people of a country through representatives whom they select. So, Hitler could only make laws if the Reichstag agreed to them. At that time more than half the seats in the Reichstag belonged to parties which doesn’t agree with Hitler’s ideas, he was not happy on the amount of seats he has in the Reichstag. As the Chancellor of Germany, he arranged for a general election to be held in March 1. In this election he hoped that his Nazi Party would win a major victory and will get a majority of the seats in the Reichstag. A week before the voting day, Hitler’s luck began. The Reichstag building went up in flames. Marianus van der Lubbe, a communist, was caught on the scene with matches and fire-lighters in his pockets. Hitler saw this as an opportunity to blame on the other parties, so he said it was the start of a Communist plot to take over the country. So, he went to President Hindenburg and asked him to make a special law, the Law for the Protection of the People and State. Hindenburg was the only person who had power to enable new laws in an emergency, even if the Reichstag didn’t agree. Hindenburg did not realize that this law would help Hitler become a dictator, so he made the law that Hitler wanted. This new law banned Communists and Socialists from taking part in the upcoming election campaign. Four thousand of them were throw into prison. But the results of the election weren’t good. As a result of banning the Communists, Hitler and the Nazis won just under half the vote. It wasn’t what Hitler wanted, he wanted more. But it was good enough to persuade the new Reichstag to agree to the Enabling Act on rd March 1. This will let Hitler make laws without asking the Reichstag. So now Hitler can do whatever he likes to his opponents without worrying what the Reichstag and Hindenburg thought of him.

Hitler used this law to get rid of anyone and any parties that got in his way to total power. On 7th April 1 he put Nazi officials in charge of the local governments which ran Germany’s regions. On nd May he closed down trade unions, took away their finances and put their leaders in prison. In this period, Hitler also ordered to publicly burned books by Jewish authors in Berlin. This will mean that he gets censorship, so the German people can only read what Hitler wants them to read. On the 14th July, he made a Law against the Formation of New Parties. This means that the Nazi Party was the only party allowed to exist in Germany, anyone trying to set up or run a new party would be punished with three years hard labour. Now, Germany became a one party state. The Nazi Party even controlled the police force of Germany.

Hitler made Germany into a one party state but he had problems to deal with in the Nazi Party. Two million people of the Nazi Party were Storm Troopers. Their leader Ernst Roehm, wanted to make his Storm Troopers part of the Army. But Hitler and the army generals hated this idea because this would make Roehm the most powerful man in Germany. Some other reasons why Hitler didn’t like the SA were that he no longer trusted them, Rohem wanted to push Hitler into certain policies which Hitler thought unwise and the dislike of the reputation of many SA leaders may have been a cause for the Night of the Long Knives . In the morning of 0th June 14 (also known as ‘The Night of the Long Knives), Roehm and the other SA leaders were arrested on Hitler’s orders, they were taken to prison and shot. Over the next few days, about 400 people were arrested and executed in the same way. The killings were done by the SS, the finest people in the army. Now, they were Hitler’s own bodyguards.

Custom Essays on How did Hitler turn Germany from a democracy into a dictatorship between 1933 and 1934? How far did he have full control by 1934?

On nd August, President Hindenburg dies from old age, aged 87. Hitler immediately took over and merges President and Chancellor into one role, gave him self the title ‘Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor. On the exactly same day, the officers and the men of the army makes a personal oath of allegiance to Hitler.

Hitler now has the total power on the political side, but he still hasn’t got the total power of the people of Germany.

Even though Hitler had made a major triumph on the political side of Germany, he didn’t have complete control over Germany by 14. Hitler didn’t have the support of all the people of Germany. He wasn’t really far from full control over Germany. So, he would have to control of all forms of expression and communication. This was done by propaganda and censorship. This was controlled by Gobbels, the head of the Nazi Ministry of People’s Enlightenment and Propaganda. So he tried a few propagandas to gain the people’s mind towards Nazi. He used the radio to broadcasts his speeches, it would have been listened to by workers, pupils in the classroom and families at home. Hitler had full control of the arts, he burned works from writers and only allow works that Hitler would like the people to read. He had control of the universities, nazi interfered with researches in the universities. He also had the control of the press, they make sure that all news from officially approved agencies. Journalists were directed by the press department of the Ministry of People’s Enlightenment and Propaganda and were given regular briefings on what line to take in their articles. Hitler made mass rallies throughout the country to glorify Nazi rule.

By August 14, Hitler had the control of the political side of Germany, but he didn’t have the full control of the people’s mind. So, he didn’t have full control of Germany yet, he had about ¾ of complete control. Another ¼ was the people’s mind, he expand this by doing propagandas. His position in people’s mind are uprising .

Throughout history, the rejection of new ideas has been the rule and not the exception. It seems to be that the nature of mankind is to be suspicious of new things. Most often, a new idea is perceived as crazy, as unreal, as needless, and in some extreme cases, as heresy. This was the case in the XVI century, when Nicolas Copernicus, before his death, published his book The Revolution of Heavenly Orbs, in which he claimed that the solar system was a heliocentric system instead of geocentric system. This new idea was contrary to the belief of those days. His ideas were not supported by the catholic church and were viewed as heresy, therefore, banning the circulation of the book. One hundred years later, in the XVII century, Galileo Galilei published his book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, in which he sided with the Copernican model of the solar system. His views were seen once again as a threat to society, and soon after, he was placed under house arrest for the rest of his life. Plato, on the Allegory of the Cave, compares the world that we live in, to a dark cave, and the people of the world, to the characters inside the cave. In making a comparison between the world and the cave, and the people as the figures in the cave, I find that the world is divided into three kinds of people. The first kind of people are the illiterate or unenlightened. The second kind of people are the somewhat educated, and the third kind of people are the educated or the enlightened ones of the world.

The first kind of people, the illiterate, are those who are at the bottom of the spectrum in terms of knowledge. This people believe that what they see is reality, when in fact is the shadow of true reality. As in the characters of the cave, the shadow makers are the opinion maker, or the people that wants us to look at the world the way we want it to be seen. An opinion maker can be any one. For example, a priest telling his congregation how God wants them to live, a news broadcast network reporting their views of the world, the local newspaper exposing what the people want to see. At this level a person thinks in terms of vague impressions. A person uncritically accepts everything that enters his mind, whatever the source might be gossip, hearsay, opinions, media. At this level, a person is unable to distinguish between reality and illusion, between the genuine and the pseudo, between the legitimate and the phony. This is the unexamined life at its worst. An uncritical jumble of clich and illusion.

The second kind of people are the somewhat educated. This group of people are the ordinary people of the world. At this level, a person has a strong conviction for what he sees, but not with absolute certainty. A person at this level has a better perception of reality, he perceives concrete facts; he relies in his senses. He can tell the difference between facts and fantasy (images and reflections). But the fact that a person can actually see the object and not just shadows does not mean he knows all there is to know about a subject. Even though this group is more advanced than the uneducated group still at this level a persons’ opinion relate solely to a particular thing. He uses words that imply general meaning, but he does not bother to inquire into this general meanings. A person simply takes some meaning for granted as if nothing else existed.

Finally, the third kind of people are the educated or enlightened, the erudites of the world. This is the group of the Copernicus, the Galileo’s, the Einstein’s, the Plato’s , the Socrates of the world. They have been liberated from the chains of ignorance. This is perhaps the smallest of the three groups of people. Few are the ones that reach this pinnacle of life. But before they reached this level, they had to go through a great deal of pain. The path leading to the outside of the cave is steep, rocky and painful because all things that were believe to be truth and real are becoming unclear. As the person is escorted from the bottom of the cave to the outer surface a person is also experiencing the shift from the darkness of the cave to the brightness of the sunlight outside the cave. It is hard to see things in a different way from that which one had been conditioned to know. It is difficult to accept and understand new things in life. The life of an individual changes as he discovers that his old beliefs were only an illusion “He [the person] would need, then, to grow accustomed before he could see things in the upper world” (Plato). This is a period of perseverance, but once the truth is known, a person cannot go back to previous beliefs.

It is possible to live at the level of imagining or at the level of perception and be satisfied with one’s lifestyle, after all, that is all a person knows or is willing to know. However, the real challenge is to step outside one’s comfort zone. As in the Allegory of the cave, when the prisoner is set free and taken to the light the change was painful in the beginning, but afterwards it was rewarding. Once a person liberates himself from the chains of ignorance reaching the level of understanding, it is impossible to go back to the two lower stages. The lifestyle outside the cave is full and rewarding. A person that has reached this level has evolved from a simple and superficial uneducated individual to a fully developed and intelligent human being. The ability to learn is within everyone’s reach.

Dear English Syllabus Committee

It is hard to comprehend the fathomless terror of being psychotic, we who live in a world that has its road maps, recognizable to us all. We reach out for a glass and it is where we expect it to be. We do not hear voices telling us to kill ourselves. We do not believe that television is broadcasting our most secret thoughts. We look at our children, and their faces do not distort into that of wickedness. We do not believe that everyone in the world is plotting against us.

A mental illness such as schizophrenia cannot be seen or easily identified. Society’s response to the victims of this tragic disease can often be hurtful. It is essential that society can identify with these people and respond in an accepting manner. I would like you to consider placing the text Tell Me I’m Here written by Anne Deveson on the recommended text list as an expository text. An expository text is defined as writing that is intended primarily to inform, instruct or explain. Tell Me I’m Here is an intensely emotional, compelling story of Jonathon, a charming teenager who turns into a fearful and tormented young man. He suffers the mental illness known as schizophrenia. Tell Me I’m Here has many purposes; Deveson writes for the millions of others with schizophrenia, who daily walk a tightrope, courageously trying to balance between their world and ours. She writes for the families that struggle to hold on to hope when often they are scourged by despair, and who suffer from ignorance and neglect. Most importantly, Deveson writes to portray the unknown horrors of this frightening disease to society. The aims of Deveson are to inform, instruct and explain to the reader about this disease, these covering the fundamental aspects of an expository text. “A thing is not impossible merely because it is inconceivable.” This is a quote taken from Lewis Carroll, a famous writer and poet which relates to the issue of schizophrenia. It shows us that, although it is difficult for the majority of society to comprehend, schizophrenia still exists. By placing this text on the recommended syllabus list, the level of understanding of this disease would be heightened; ideally, socities response to the victims of schizophrenia would be more accepting.

Adolescence can be a time of extremes, from rebellious independence to agonising vulnerability; a time to burst through into the world and find your identity. Jonathon, the teenager in Deveson’s story was not finding his. To loose one’s identity is to loose a sense of self this renders life meaningless. It also complicates the lives of those who care for him, physically and emotionally. The author Deveson creates an extremely melancholic tone throughout the novel, and, while I read, I felt a huge sense of sympathy for the family and for Jonathon. Deveson shows us the fact that society is ignorant of mental illness and treats it with contempt. She portrays the horrors of the illness, the immediate effect on family and some of society’s response to this illness. For example, an extremely powerful quote reflecting some of society’s response is “The voice on the radio says that the only good schizo is a dead one!” This quote shows society’s contempt towards those suffering mental illness. It expresses responses that are unkind, unfair and uncompassionate. Deveson brought to the subject her immense intelligence and humanity, using this to create a sense of anger towards the ignorant society and a sense of empathy for Jonathon, who represents all victims of mental illness. This outstanding piece of literature must be shared with others; we all must experience the torment of Jonathon’s madness and see the difficulty associated with caring for these malevolent, troubled personalities.

Deveson challenges the legal and the health system throughout the expository. She articulates her distain towards the hospitals and the system that did not help her. Deveson uncovers the ironic flaws in the health system; For example, she is told that “Most mental health services will not take mentally ill people if they have a drug problem and drug and alcohol services will not take mentally ill people.” The irony can be seen when one realizes that people suffering this disease take drugs in an attempt to solve these strange emotions and experiences. Basically, the victims of schizophrenia and their families are left with no choice! Deveson portrays hospitals that are run to suit the suit the system rather than the patient; even the best of them are authoritarian institutions. This part of the novel opposes the way I used to think of the health systems, I used to believe that the patients came first. But when I took a good look at today’s health system, I now believe that it is far from my idealistic view of the system that I once possessed. Take for example, a feature article in the West Australian on the 7th of July showed a mother tried to kill herself and her two children after a councilor refused to see her because he wasn’t on duty. It seems to me that Deveson has embraced and discussed a realist topic, an absurd health system, and shared with us the problems that she saw in the system.

Meaning is created from the context of the author combined with the context that you bring to the text. The syllabus states that authors create texts that reflect their particular attitudes and values; therefore, recognizing the context of the author is essential. Deveson’s story is both compelling and tragic. Tell Me I’m Here is a heart-rending story of a mother facing the realization that her child is going mad. The emotions experienced throughout the text are intensified by the notion that Jonathon, who developed schizophrenia at the age of 17, was her son. We struggle to comprehend the fear associated with being psychotic - Anne Deveson and her children Georgia and Joshua are forced to experience and survive this fear. In this novel the two children are ‘pushed’ into a shadow by Jonathon’s madness, which, in turn becomes part of their story. They are forced to grow up and mature too fast and in doing so loose much of their childhood. Deveson includes poetry written by the daughter Georgia that expresses her distain towards Jonathon. Joshua, the son, suggests a hitman for his own brother which is very powerful in that it is tragic.

The setting for this expository is in Adelaide, which establishes a sense of realism I suddenly was alerted to the fact that this illness is occurring in our own country! I used to feel like these problems were on the other side of world, however reading this placed me in Devenson’s backyard. I felt so close to the issue of the misunderstood mental illness and the horrors felt very real. Deveson also uses statistics to prove to us that it is very much a large part of society. For example she shows us that one person in every hundred will develop the illness, worldwide that is 55 million people. That is an unbelievably high statistic which shocked me when I first read it. Although there is such a tremendous number of victims worldwide, schizophrenia is most probably the most mis-understood of all illnesses.

By including this text on the recommended English syllabus list, not only will the students who study this expository text be benefiting from the particular features of the construction of the text such as tone and setting, they will also be presented with issues that they will know little about, therefore, will alter their own personal context. Finally, by including this text, you may be enriching the lives of those who suffer any form of mental illness and perhaps, the most mis-understood illness will no longer be the most mis-understood.

Yours sincerely

Charlie’s Cheese

“It is just over 550 gram, do you mind?” Each time Charley knew to sell at least 10% extra when a client asked for only 500 gram. But as he was very friendly, his clients were satisfied and Charlie’s business has grown over the years.

The first Charlie’s Cheese special store was established in 160 in Edam. From then each year Charley opened a new cheese specialty store with the name Charlie’s Cheese. By the end of the eighties, Charlie’s Cheese consisted of 4 stores and 15 vans to deliver cheese, butter and eggs at client’s homes.

The decreased growth during the eighties also had some consequences for Charlie’s Cheese. Each month turnover was less and profit margins deteriorated. The fixed cost of the 4 stores was too high and the first loss was reported. The bank advised Charley to reduce the number of stores by closing down the less profitable ones.

But during the mid-nineties Charlie’s Cheese was faced with increased competition from supermarkets and week markets that extended their product lines with all kinds of cheese. Again Charley is faced with reduced turnover and downward pressure on margins.

Besides Charley the management team consists of Petra who is responsible for finance, Willem responsible for sales, Henk who is responsible for procurement and Gerda takes care of communication.

Branded cheese is bought direct at diary producers. Some fresh “Farmercheese” is bought at some local cheese-producing farmers for € ,75 per kilo (excl. VAT). This type of cheese takes care of about 60% of the volume of Charlie’s Cheese. The other 40% is realized by branded cheese

Asian American Bias

There’s a reoccurring image of Asian Americans in the media that stands out among the rest of the population. For instance, they are thought of as being quiet, hard working, successful, and family orientated. Even images of Asian females that predominate in the media paint pictures of small petite women. For the most part these observations are true and are rather obvious in the majority of Asian Americans. One possible explanation for this behavior is westernization, the influence of American culture on the Asian cultures. As a result of westernization, Asian American images appear to be glossy on the surface, however, underneath there are negative implications on their mental/physical health.

Westernization has affected many cultures not just Asian cultures. In addition, it doesn’t even have to be here in the United States where westernization takes place, its spreading around the world. Nevertheless, here in the United States its wrath is much stronger. Second generation children of Filipino immigrants face hard struggles with the battle ground between two cultures. On the one side their parents are trying to instill their culture, values, and national identity. On the other side the high tide of American culture is constantly bombarding these second generation children with opposing ideals and values. Being torn between cultures can take its toll on these Filipino children and cause feelings of stress and alienation.

Filipinos have been referred to as a “model minority” and for a good reason. They have a high educational attainment, a high level of labor force participation, a high percentage of working as professionals, and the lowest rate of poverty in the United States and in California. More than likely westernization is responsible for this. Immigrant individuals want to adapt and establish themselves in this western society. Working across cultural boundaries isn’t easy and would require these people to work harder to become successful.

Order College Papers on Asian American Bias

In Diane Wolfs’ article “Family Secrets Transnational Struggles Among Children of Filipino Immigrants,” she interviewed 1 undergraduates at UC Davis. When she asked them what it meant to be Filipino, the majority responded that it was their strong sense of family. One student said “For me, being Filipino, I guess its is basically the family,” another “To me, being Filipino means having strong family ties.” The responses are all pretty much the same as these two students’. It’s only obvious how strong family influence would be on Filipino children.

When it comes to education Filipinos don’t take it lightly. The interviewed UC Davis students expressed their experiences with their college career in conjunction with their families. They push their children to excel in school and be the best that they can. Sometimes they push too hard. Anything lower than a letter grade of an “A” was often times not acceptable. Wolf says “some parents were more concerned with grades and achievement than their Childs well-being” (Wolf 5). As if that wasn’t enough, most of the undergraduates that were interviewed pursuing majors that their families chose for them. This type of parental treatment can have negative consequences on the metal health of their children.

Ok Filipino parents push their children to the maximum so that they do well in school and assimilate into the western culture. These kids have some of the highest GPA’s and academic standings in their schools so what’s the big deal? What kinds of mental health problems can they have? Studies have shown that Filipino students had high numbers of suicidal consideration. Even more disturbing is that a high percentage actually made attempts on their life. They had some of the lowest depression and self-esteem scores. Filipino ideology seems to prevent these students from talking about their problems because it would bring shame to their family. As a result they would alienate themselves from their families. In the end these bottled up emotions can lead to explosive results.

It’s not only in the areas of education where westernization has wreaked its harmful wrath, but in Asian American women’s bodies it has too. Asian American women are trying fit into the image of “the petite skinny Asian girl” which most of them are, but in the process is creating an upwelling of eating disorders among them. Anorexia and bulimia were once termed “white girls’ diseases,” but now it’s encroaching upon other races.

In the article “Starving in Silence Eating and Body Image Disorders Plague Young Asian and Asian American women,” by Eunice Park, he interviews a women affected by an eating disorder. 1 year old Susan expresses some of her reasons for her obsession by saying “Guys are always saying ‘Yeah, those Asian girls are so petite and skinny.’ The truth is, we are trying to fill a stereo-type of the older Asian generation, that of our petite 100-pound mothers with size 5 feet. We grow up in American, where everything is bigger. There’s no surprise that we, too, are physically bigger.” Susan was anorexic for a year and once 80 pounds, which is very low for a person who is 5’5; unfortunately she later lapsed in to bulimia. Her diminishing health is a result of her trying to adapt to western standards. There are many other like Susan who suffer from these disorders and its sad that the Asian ideology of silence prevents them from receiving treatment.

The Asian American image in western culture looks great on the surface; hard working individuals, who look great, and are exceptionally studious. In one were to look past these superficial images, they would see that there’s a lot more to their situation. There are strong negative implications that foster these images and threaten their health. As with the second generation Filipino students, they face large amounts of mental distress. Sure they perform well in school but their families give them no other options and sometimes are more concerned with their performance then their well-being. Asian women are also facing deteriorating health due to the fact that they are trying to blend into western society. Eating disorders are on the rise among Asian Americans and there needs to more of an effort to educate them. Although their images appear ideal on the surface, westernization has catalyzed the negative implications that lurk beneath.

All Shakespeare’s tragedies examine a flaw in human nature. ‘Othello’ deals with jealousy, ‘Macbeth’ with ambition and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ deals with the fatal proximity of love to hate. Shakespeare shows us that love has many different facets and contrasts, but are his theories still valid today? In this essay I hope to find out.

The first example we see of love is to be found in the first scene. This is love as carnal satisfaction. To Sampson and Gregory, love means only the rape of Montague women, they will ‘thrust his[Lord Montague’s] maids to the wall.’ It is hinted that the serving men of both houses share this idea of love- these are men of simple tastes.

Another aspect of love displayed in our first meeting of Romeo. This is courtly, unrequited love. Romeo is deeply in love with Rosaline but she has chosen a life of chastity. Romeo’s first love is stale and sterile; nothing can ever come of it. Romeo is not so much in love as obsessed with Rosaline. His love makes him miserable, we are told that Romeo ‘in his chamber pens himself ¦Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out.’ Love to Romeo is a mass of paradoxes and oxymorons ‘Feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health.’ He sees Rosaline’s vow of chastity as a work of evil for she ‘cuts beauty off from all prosperity’. This means that if she has taken this vow, she will have no children to inherit her looks. He cannot believe that any girl can be more beautiful- ‘The all-seeing sun¦Ne’er saw her match since first the world begun.’ He begins to think that love is cruel ‘it[Cupid’s arrow] pricks like the thorn.’ Romeo’s love has consumed him and Shakespeare takes the metaphor of a flower to describe it. Lord Montague is anxious that Romeo will not blossom into a young man because an ‘envious worm’ (his love for Rosaline) has bit the ripe bud of his adolescence.

Friar Lawrence carries yet another strand of love. He believes in an idealistic, healing love. As a priest, Friar Lawrence is celibate and therefore without any personal experience of love. We are told that he was amusedly worried by Romeo’s devotion to Rosaline, but he definitely finds Romeo’s sudden change of heart comical. We are told that he often reprimanded Romeo’s doting on Rosaline. He is worried that Romeo may be a ‘waverer’. He has the idealistic idea of healing the feud and making Romeo and Juliet happy by the action of marrying them- For this alliance may so happy prove, ¦ To turn your households’ rancour to pure love.’ He is however conscious of the undue speed of their match-‘wisely and slow’-and warns them that too much honey can spoil the appetite for it-‘Therefore love moderately, long love doth so.’ He does his best to console the lovers after Tybalt’s death, arranging for their one night together and planning Juliet’ pseudo-death. The Friar sees the hypocrisy in the Capulet’s mourning and is quick to tell them that ‘The most you saw was her promotion, ¦ For ‘twas your heaven she should be advanced.’

Custom Essays on ‘Here’s much to do with hate, but more with love’. Shakespeare’s world is foreign to us only in some of its customs and value systems. The variations he plays in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ on love, it’s corollaries and antitheses are timeless. What do you think?

Lady Capulet’s idea of love is purely practical. She sees love as the creation of a ‘good marriage. She endorses the idea of Juliet’s marriage to Paris, whom she extols as a ‘fair volume’, like a beautiful book that lacks only a cover (a wife). She is determined to advance Juliet through a rich marriage and is thus delighted when Capulet chooses Paris-‘the gallant, young and noble gentleman’- to be her daughter’s husband. However she is not averse to occasional vindictiveness, calling on Prince Escalus to execute Romeo for the death of Tybalt, and when he refuses, plotting to have him poisoned while in exile in Mantua. When Juliet refuses to marry Paris Lady Capulet’s love for her is exposed as hollow-‘I would the fool were married to her grave’ and ‘Do as thou wilt, for I have done with thee.’ Her hypocritical display of grief for Juliet- ‘But one, poor one, one poor and loving child, ¦ But one thing to rejoice and solace in’ by Friar Lawrence.

Lord Capulet’s ideas on love are quite similar to his wives. However they are dominated by his belief that daughters should obey their fathers in all things. This was a common idea in the sixteenth century, the time when Shakespeare was writing. Arranged marriages were commonplace at the time. A daughter had no rights and was considered a possession to be traded. When Shakespeare was writing, most of his audience would also be of this mind. To this end, Capulet chooses the County Paris to wed Juliet. He is impressed by his nobility- ‘A gentleman of noble parentage, ¦ Of fair demesnes, youthful and nobly liened.’ In fact his love for Juliet depends on her acquiescence to his demands. When she does not accede to his demands he launches a massive verbal attack upon his daughter- either she obeys him or she will be thrown out of the house ‘to hang, beg, starve, die in the streets.’ When she ‘dies’ he is devastated, he claims that ‘with my child my joys are buried.’

Paris displays a prime example of how unrequited love can be true and pure, unlike Romeo’s for Rosaline. He is one of Verona’s most eligible bachelors, who seeks Juliet’s hand in marriage. He has excellent manners but is obviously disappointed that Juliet does not return his love (although because of grief for Tybalt he thinks). The fidelity of love is shown in his vow to strew the tomb of his love with flowers and weep for her every night. When mortally wounded in the fight with Romeo his last wish is that Romeo will lay him with Juliet. This is done.

The Nurse reflects the attitude that love must end with a marriage. However she is unable to see past the sexual side of marriage. The Nurse’s frequent, bawdy jokes show her opinion that marriage, to her, means only legalised sex. More than once she tells an anecdote regarding an accident Juliet had when she was younger. Juliet fell and hit her forehead and the Nurse claims her husband said to Juliet ‘Thou wilt fall backward when thou hast more wit’. What she is saying, is that when Juliet is older, she will fall backwards with a man on top of her. She is inconsistent, telling Romeo of Juliet’s disdain for Paris. She loves her part as a messenger between the couple but makes a big fuss about it-‘I am the drudge…but you shall bear the burden soon at night,’ this is once again a sexual reference. She says that there is no faith in men, all are dishonest. She advises Juliet to marry Paris after Romeo’s banishment- she claims Romeo is a ‘dishcloth’ in comparison to Paris. She has no conception of the depth and strength of her wards love.

Benvolio displays a rare kind of love, platonic love of one man for another. This is true friendship, an unselfish concern for a friend in trouble. He is desperately anxious about Romeo’s feelings for Rosaline- he does not want Romeo to get hurt. He urges Romeo to ‘examine other beauties’.

The main theme of true love is introduced by its partner-love at first sight. As soon as Romeo sees Juliet at the Capulet ball, he falls passionately in love with her. This is an example of chemistry or electricity between two people. He forgets Rosaline instantly as his inner poet is inspired Juliet ‘teaches the torches to burn bright…she hangs upon the cheek of night¦Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear’. Irony is displayed here as Romeo renounces all his former vows to Rosaline, who is forgotten, and pledges them all to Juliet. Was his unrequited true, or fantasy? His declarations of Rosaline’s beauty melt away as he exclaims ‘I never saw true beauty till this night.’

The main strand of love in the play is the true, self-sacrificial love between Romeo and Juliet. It is clear from the outset that the chemistry has effected them both. They share a metaphorical sonnet. Romeo, like he did with Rosaline, puts Juliet on a pedestal, he imagines himself to be a pilgrim (palmer) at the holy shrine of a saint. The only difference with Juliet is that this time she returns his previously unrequited love. Juliet therefore is horrified when the Nurse informs her that Romeo is a Montague. She is horrified-‘my only love sprung from my only hate.’ Romeo’s new found love makes him feel light-headed and full of hope. His new courage enables him to climb the Capulet’s steep orchard walls to see Juliet again. There is symbolism a plenty as Juliet comes onto the balcony and he enthuses of her beauty. Her eyes are to him the brightest stars in the sky, her cheek in heaven would make the night so blaze that birds would sing, believing it to be daybreak. She is to him an angel, a winged messenger from heaven. She is depicted as a glorious sun, showing light and life giving. Rosaline is now demoted to being seen as a jealous moon, representing chastity and sterility. The love of Romeo and Juliet is synonymous with light that cannot be stifled, even by night, whereas Romeo’s love for Rosaline revolved around the absence of light, he drew his curtains and lived in blind darkness.

Juliet tells herself of the futility of names, they have no meaning- ‘That which we call a rose¦By any other word would smell as sweet’. When Romeo reveals himself Juliet is embarrassed, as what she has declared is not ‘proper’. However she soon overcomes her reservations and they exchange lovers vows, the last being one of the most beautiful passages in English literature- ‘My bounty is as boundless as the sea, ¦ My love as deep; the more I give to thee ¦ The more I have for both are infinite.’ This is true love, unstinting and unfettered.

The couple can hardly bear to leave each other. Juliet wishes he were a trained bird who would return to her when she called, or a little bird tied to a string that could not fly away. Romeo leaves the meeting a trifle shell-shocked. He cannot believe that such perfection can be true- ‘How silver-sweet are lovers’ tongues by night, ¦ Like softest music to attending ears.’ Mercutio notices the change in Romeo but attributes it to him finally getting over Rosaline. This is partially true but he does not know of Romeo’s new found love. Romeo’s new wittiness he feels is better than ‘this drivelling love’, Romeo is however profoundly in love-more so than before. As he awaits confirmation of his impending marriage, Romeo challenges ‘love-devouring death’ to do its worst. This it promptly does. Tybalt slays Mercutio and Romeo in revenge betrays his wife and murders her cousin. He is indeed fortune’s fool.

Juliet waits impatiently for her wedding night, not knowing of the tragedy that has befallen her new husband. Once more the light metaphor is played out with Juliet wishing to cut her spouse into stars that would make heaven so fine that all would worship night. Her illusion of Romeo is shattered when she learns of Tybalt’s demise. Confusion racks her, she sees Romeo as a lethal serpent hidden beneath a beautiful flower. Her doubts about him soon pass, when the Nurse also speaks ill of Romeo. Neither of them can bear the harsh sterility of banishment; they would prefer death. Juliet vows that death and no other man will take her maidenhead. Romeo attempts suicide, rejecting philosophy and the advice of his mentor Friar Lawrence.

One night alone of happiness is allowed to these ‘star cross’d lovers’; their love that was as fast of lightening has faded as quickly. As Romeo leaves his wife, Juliet has a vision of her husband dead at the bottom of a tomb. Juliet vows that she will remain an unstained wife to Romeo despite Capulet’s plan to marry her to Paris. She agrees to Friar Lawrence’s plan and is prepared to face the horrors of the Capulet tomb to be reunited with her true love. Tragically her premonition is fulfilled, the next time she sees Romeo he is indeed dead. Her overwhelming love leads her to follow Romeo into death. Their pure, generous love cured the ancient feud, but at such a cost! Escalus sums up the whole situation with these lines ‘See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, ¦ That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.’

The primary antithesis to love is hate. This sentiment is personified by Tybalt Capulet. He mistakes love for rancour. He sees Romeo as a troublemaker who has come to the ball to ‘fleer and scorn at our solemnity.’ He stands as a stark opposite to the pure love of Romeo and Juliet; his only love is for fighting and perpetuating the feud with the Montagues. He vows at the ball that he will convert Romeo’s intrusion ‘now seeming sweet’ to ‘bitterest gall.’ This he duly does.

Mercutio, who has never experienced true love, carries another antithesis-cynicism. He mocks love as a foolish thing that makes all lovers subservient to it. He constantly refers to loves blindness in a mocking fashion- ‘If love be blind, love cannot hit the mark’. He thinks of love as an illusion and feels pity for those, like Romeo, who ‘suffer’ it. Mercutio is almost a little cross about what Rosaline is doing to Romeo. He thinks Romeo has taken leave of his senses and is ‘dead, stabbed with a white wench’s black eye…the very pin of his heart cleft with the blind bow boy’s [Cupid’s] butt-shaft [arrow].’ He jests at Romeo’s comparisons between Rosaline and great mythic beauties like Helen, Thisbe and Cleopatra. His only belief in love is smutty and sexual. His frequent jokes are of a sexual nature. An example of this is his comments that Romeo is ‘raising a spirit in his mistress’ circle’ when he cannot be found after the Capulet ball. This antithesis, though milder than hate is still valid.

A lot has changed in the four hundred years since Shakespeare wrote his plays. Globalisation has shrunk the world substantially and exploration has even added bits to it. In his time arranged marriage was commonplace, now it would be unacceptable. However Shakespeare’s genius has enabled him to capture the most profound of all human emotions, love. His observations are definitely still valid today, and some of his characters are recognisable with others. Will Shakespeare’s thoughts on love still be valid in another four hundred years? Only time will tell.

To maintain a society in well-being is a hard and essential target to any government. And when governing a nation, the leader always meets the dilemma between overall and individual benefit. I think a nation should put its own overall success on the first place, but also should not lookdown the well-being of individual citizens.

A nation is a union of all people, but not some people. It is firstly must protect the public benefit. Only a nation defend the majority benefit, can it be cold a democracy nation. And only it can effectively protect public benefit, will people support it. If a nation looks down the overall success, it is doomed the nations end day is coming soon. Retrospect the history, no thrived country didnt put its own overall successfully. Take the Tang Dynasty in China for instance. At the beginning of Tang, the King built new water construction, widened river width, and drew many disciplines to help people. The science, technology and art in Tang Dynasty all developed greatly. And it bring China into a thriving time. But at the end the Tang Dynasty, the leader didnt care the public trouble, only thought about living in richness and lavish. Soon, the Tang Dynasty was overthrow.

Of cause, we speak of putting overall success before the individual well-being doesnt mean any government should neglect individual, or even use it as excuse for his failure in protecting individual benefit. After all, any nation is composed by every individual. Only most individuals benefit has been gained, only could call it the overall benefit has won. And any individual disaffection must has its reason, which is very probably will be the source that will grow the overall rejection power. So any government should also often detect and research the reason of individuals dissatisfaction.

It is really not easy for a government to balance the individual and the majority benefit. But these two aspects are not absolutely opposite. The group is composed by every individual, and the group represent all individual also.

Homosexuality in our society today has become more openly widespread than ever, yet many still view it as something new and strange. Shakespeare wrote of cross-dressing in the Twelfth Night and the famous poet Walt Whitman was a homosexual. So, why does society put an emphasis on homosexuality as being “dirty” or “evil”? Two men or two women should be allowed to join in matrimony and adopt children in more than two states.

Racism and prejudice are synonymous words yet, one would think that to be racist is worse than being prejudice. If one admits that one is a racist society condemns he or she; however, a fear or dislike of homosexuals seems to break a common ground for most heterosexuals in our society. That fear or dislike of a person could be aptly defined as a type of prejudice. Bruce Bawer explains, “In a world of prejudice, there is no other prejudice quite like it. Mainstream writers, politicians and cultural leaders who hate Jews or blacks or Asians but who have long since accepted the unwritten rules that forbid public expression of those prejudices still denounce gays with impunity” (61).

There are many reasons people have as to why same sex couples should not wed. For some it is a deep personal and private reason and for others it is the fear of being exposed to something that is different. Two of the more prominent and maybe more discussed reasons are Aids and child abuse. Lets take each of these reasons and briefly discuss how they affect a persons emotions, alters his or her judgment, and how not to let these reasons weigh so heavily on a person’s feelings and perceptions of others.

Child abuse is a very common problem. Many children are abused in some form whether it is physical, verbal, or emotional neglect chances are you may have been or known of a child that has been abused. Sexual assault of children (mainly boys) is a concern for many when considering the problems of same sex families. In a study done of a 175 incarcerated Massachusetts men who were imprisoned for the sexual assault of children, none of the prisoners had relations exclusively with men. Forty percent were involved in heterosexual relationships. It could be concluded from this information that pedophiles are in a class to themselves; they are not limited to homosexual men. Pedophiles are more likely men who are not comfortable with their sexuality. Men who are comfortable enough with their sexuality to marry other men are more likely men who identify well with who they are sexually and therefore not as probable to abuse the children they care for (Graff 16). Victims and abusers come in many races and social classes; they are not limited to homosexual men.

The number of people in our population who have tested positive for HIV and Aids is sadly climbing. In the early and mid 0’s homosexual men accounted for at least 45% of people who tested positive for HIV, so it is not unlikely that people should think that children in the care of homosexual men might contract the virus. Aids cases among heterosexual men are increasingly rising over the numbers of cases of homosexual and bisexual men (Hopkins and Johnston 18). There are many children who are still in the care of their HIV positive heterosexual parents. Many children are also abused by their heterosexual parents and there are also spouses in heterosexual marriages that are being abused by their significant other whose children are forced to watch.

You can point, stare, criticize, analyze and even make it illegal, but ultimately two people who love each other will be together and there is nothing you can do. Aids and child abuse are both horrible things that heterosexual are exposed to and commit yet no one does anything about it. Some heterosexuals have Aids and some commit child abuse but people don’t scrutinize heterosexual relationships as they do homosexual relationships. They do this probably because a homosexual relationship isn’t the norm but what is normal? Two people who love each other and want to raise a child together are not normal. That is the conclusion to make from all the anti-homosexual opinions. Sexual orientation should not matter when children who need loving and caring families are considered and it definitely not be considered when two consenting adult want to make a formal commitment to one another.
