First Impressions in Pride and Prejudice One Work Cited First impressions are very important in Jane Austins Pride and Prejudice. As the story develops, we discover how the prejudices and first impressions of each of the main characters change. The primary focus is on the character of Elizabeth Bennet. Elizabeths judgments about other characters dispositions are accurate about half of the time. While she is correct about Mr. Collins and how absurdly self-serving he is and about Lady Catherine de Bourgh and how proud and snobbish...

When you open to the first page and begin reading, the Bennet family is instantly introduced, along with Mr. Bingley. The Bennet family , which is composed of parents who generally have opposite opinions, and four daughters, each with their own special abilities, play the main role, especially the second daughter Elizabeth. The whole story is narrated through her point of view, so the opinions of other people that eventually become your own are taken from whom Elizabeth is close to and whom she dislikes. That brings us to the other characters, namely the Bingley family and Mr. Darcy.

The Bingley family represents a very wealthy family, whose son would be a prize for any girl, and who is deeply interested in Jane, the eldest, beautiful Bennet daughter. The family though doesnt believe the Bennets to be of a high enough standard, and move their brother to London to distract him with Mr. Darcys sister, who supposedly was as unlikable as Mr. Darcy himself. Disliked by many because of his pompousness and pride, Mr. Darcy ruined his chances with Elizabeth for himself. In his own desire, he would have easily married her, she even hated to dance with the man.

I. The Artist

A. Name of the artist Andy Warhol

1. Birth date

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola on August 6th 18.

Buy custom Andy Warhol term paper

. Place (be specific- city, country, home?, etc.) (10 points)

Most people believe Andy Warhol was actually born in Forest City, Pennsylvania, but Warhol’s true birthplace is unknown. Warhol used to change the location of his birthplace in just about every interview he did. Some days Warhol would say he was born in McKeesport, a community of immigrant workers south of Pittsburgh, other days Warhol would say he was born in Philadelphia, and on occasion he would even say Hawaii.

. Who was in power in their country at their birth/ during their life? How did the political and or social structure affect the life of this artist? (0 points)

Andy Warhol grew up in twentieth century America. Warhol was influenced by the great depression, World War II, The Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and the social and sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies. Warhol was born in 18, when president Coolidge was in power. Warhol also lived through Presidents Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Regan. This America would later affect his work driving ambition, greed, power, corruption, violence, sex, chaos, madness, and death- all the themes that would later inspire Warhol’s work.

4. When and where did this artist die? Explain the circumstances leading up to their death. (0 points)

Andy Warhol died at 61 a.m. on Sunday, February , 187. He died at New York Hospital due to complications of a routine gallbladder surgery.

Shortly before his death Warhol felt a tremendous amount of pain in his stomach area, and had his doctor check it out. Warhol’s doctor told him he should have surgery right away, because his gallstones were far too large. Warhol did not take his doctors advice because of his severe fear of hospitals. Warhol instead became more hermit-like, staying indoors more, rather then partying. Warhol also tried to hide his sickness away from his friends. When one of his friends, Victor Hugo, called to complain about a three week cold, Warhol was there to be sympathetic. Warhol never let on to being ill.

Warhol visited his doctor again, because the pain was beginning to be too much. His doctor told him he really needed to go into surgery right away. Despite his fear of hospitals, Warhol decided to get the surgery and made arrangements at New York Hospital. Warhol was scheduled to have the surgery on Saturday and be out by Sunday. Warhol made sure that no one but his closest aides knew. When Warhol entered the hospital he told all of his doctors that he wasn’t going to leave the hospital, they assured Warhol that he’d be fine and nothing was going to happen to him. After fifteen hours of preparation Warhol’s surgery was performed between 845a.m. and 110p.m. on Saturday February 1, 187. There were no complications at the time, and none were found later during the autopsy.

At 545a.m. Ms. Chou, the private nurse selected to watch Warhol, noticed that Warhol had turned blue and that his pulse had weakened. Unable to wake him she summoned the floor nurse who, in the words of Ms. Chou, “almost had a stroke.” A cardiac arrest team began resuscitation efforts, but had difficulty putting a tube in Warhol’s windpipe, because rigor mortis had started to set in. At 61am the artist was pronounced dead.

B. Family life and childhood

1. Describe his/her childhood including siblings, significant and/or interesting things about the family life of this artist. (0 points)

Andy Warhol grew up in the steel and coal capitol of America Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Andy lived with his mother Julia Warhola, his father Andrei Warhola, and his two brothers John and Paul Warhola. Warhol was the youngest of the three.

Warhol’s father worked with the Eichleay Corporation, a company that did construction work. His Father did not drink or gamble and even managed to put away some money in order to move them into a bigger house, but a year later Warhol’s father lost his job and their family had to move into a small two-room apartment that rented for six dollars a week. Andrei was reduced to taking odd jobs and Julia helped by doing some part time cleaning, and by selling potted plants in tin cans (later, Warhol claimed this is the reason he first started to paint soup cans). In their new home the Warhola’s only had two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. All the boys had to sleep in one bed. Their father kept order, if the boys started to act rowdy, Andrei would just look at them and they would stop what they were doing. Andrei was particularly strict on the subject of religion. Every Sunday he would take his family to mass, which lasted an hour and a half, and then he would insist that Sunday be a day of absolute rest (Warhol returned to prayer for support throughout his adult life).

Andrei soon got his job back at the Eichleay Corporation, which kept him away from his family for long periods of time, and they moved into a bigger house in a nicer neighborhood. There Warhol met his first best friend, a girl, by the name of Margie Girman. Andy would spend every afternoon with Margie, and even began to idolize her. Margie inspired him to do well in school. If Margie was going to study hard for a test, Warhol was too. Warhol always got along better with girls then boys. (It would be this way throughout his entire life).

When Warhol was eight he contracted a disease that affected his development, Chorea, better known as St. Vitus dance. Warhol became increasingly disoriented, easily provoked to tears, and found simple tasks like tying his shoes and writing his name, difficult to coordinate. At first no one noticed these symptoms, but then they worsened. Warhol began to slur his speech; touch things nervously with shaking hands, fumble, and found it hard to sit still. Julia called the doctor, who diagnosed him with a mild case of St. Vitus dance, and ordered Warhol to stay in bed for a month.

While Warhol was sick in bed his mother watched over him closely. Julia’s first child, a baby girl, Justina had died before Paul (the oldest) was born; she didn’t want to lose another child to illness. Julia made sure that Andy had plenty of comic books, coloring books, and paper dolls to keep him entertained. When Warhol got well enough to hold scissors, without shaking, he would cut out pictures from his comic books and his coloring books and make collages. When the month had past Warhol’s family decided to send him back to school. Warhol refused, hanging onto his mothers skirt and crying. When the Warholas neighbor overheard the commotion he grabbed Warhol by the shoulders, thinking he was just throwing a tantrum, and said, “You’re going to school boy!” Then proceeded to drag Warhol towards the door. The neighbor thought he was helping, but he only succeeded in sending Warhol into a relapse, causing Warhol to spasm. Julia called the doctor again; who this time said that it’s not uncommon for children with St. Vitals dance to relapse. Again Warhol had to stay in bed for a month, which was fine for Warhol because that’s where he wanted to be anyway.

When Warhol was 14 years old his father passed away. It was the only funeral Warhol had ever attended.

The next year Warhol’s mother Julia was diagnosed with colon cancer. She agreed to undergo a colostomy, an experimental operation at the time. They replaced his mothers bowel system with a bag next to her stomach. Warhol was worried she would come out alive; the surgery only had a fifty-fifty chance. The whole ordeal was traumatic for Warhol. Her experience bred in him a fear of hospitals and surgery that may have caused for Warhol’s own premature death.

. What/Who inspired the artist? How did they become an artist? (Was it a family member or friend, another artist, a philosophy, Etc.???) (10 points)

Andy Warhol was inspired by his mother. Julia enjoyed drawing for fun, and she and Warhol would often draw together. She enjoyed drawing cats sitting on hats, or funny little things like that. Warhol would draw Mickey Mouse characters. Andy Warhol was always an artist. He carried a sketchbook with him and was always drawing even when he was a little kid. Warhol just always loved to draw and loved art.

. How did the artist learn their craft? (Training, tutors, etc.) (5 points).

Andy Warhol learned his craft by drawing what he saw. Of course he did have some instruction.

In elementary school Andy Warhol’s art teacher was a Ms. Annie Vickerman. Annie had recommended Andy for a Saturday morning art class at the Carnegie Museum taught by, Joseph Fitzpatrick, an innovative instructor. There, Fitzpatrick taught them to draw with authority. Teaching them the fundamentals of drawing and painting, and how to control and play upon the basic forms.

During Warhol’s senior year at high school he was accepted to two different colleges, the University of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Warhol chose the latter because it had a stronger art department, but even with Warhol’s great artistic talent; the school was difficult for him. Warhol was held back academically by the immigrant accent and vocabulary he developed from his parents, and from his ethnic ghetto. Warhol wasn’t doing so well in his artistic classes either. Warhol had trouble with his older more “old fashioned” teachers who didn’t understand the creativity of things like leaving the cat prints from the family cat, on his work.

During the economic recession that followed the war jobs were scarce, so many soldiers took advantage of the opportunity of going to college on the G.I. Bill. Since the art department could only hold 100 students and because of Warhol’s poor grades he was one of the 4 students kicked out in order to make room for the veterans. A few teachers who had recognized Warhol’s artistic talent put up a fight for him to stay, but he was still kicked out. However, they offered him an opportunity to go to summer school and produce work, in order to be considered for readmissions in the fall. Andy did so and was accepted back. He graduated four years later.

4. To what special school, movement, or period did this artist belong? (i.e. Renaissance, post-modern, etc.) Explain in detail the focus of this period, how it evolved, and other artists who were also a part of it. (10 points)

Andy Warhol belonged to the Pop Art movement. Pop Art is a style of art that explores everyday imagery that is part of contemporary consumer culture. Common sources include advertisements, consumer product packaging, celebrities, and comic strips. Pop Art emerged in the mid 150s in England, but realized its fullest potential in New York in the 160s where it shared, with Minimalism, the attentions of the art world.

In Pop Art, the epic iss replaced with the everyday and the mass-produced are awarded the same significance as the unique. The media and advertising are favorite subjects for Pop Arts often witty celebrations of consumer society.

The term ``Pop Art was first used by the English critic Lawrence Alloway in a 158 issue of Architectural Digest to describe those paintings that celebrate post-war consumerism, defy the psychology of Abstract Expressionism, and worship the god of materialism.

Other artists who are part of the Pop Art movement are

6. How did being an artist affect his/her life? (Tell about this artist’s life from about age twenty until their death.) Was this artist sucessful in their field? What about their personal life? Explain in detail. (0 points)

When Andy Warhol was 1 years old he moved to New York. He found steady work there as a commercial artist. Warhol worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled Success is a Job in New York.

Throughout the 150s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Directors Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to Warhol. Dropping the very ethnic “a” at the end. In 15, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. Warhol’s work was exhibited in several other venues during the 150s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 156.

The 160s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 0th-century art, such as the Campbells Soup Cans, Disasters and, Marilyn’s. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire, and Blow Job. In 168, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhols studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 170s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Mao’s, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows, and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 0th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 180s with the publication of POPism The Warhol 60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, Andy Warhols TV in 18 and Andy Warhols Fifteen Minutes for MTV in 186. His paintings from the 180s include The Last Suppers, Rorschach’s and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February , 187. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patricks Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than ,000 people.

7. During the artist’s life, how was their work viewed and valued? After this artist’s death, how was their work valued? How is it valued today?

During Andy Warhol’s life his work was viewed as genius and as an inspiration. Today his work is viewed the same. Warhol is viewed as the prince of Pop Art, and is hailed as one of the best artists of the twentieth century.

Newly appointed as an exercise physiologist, investigate the mechanics of fatigue and its effects on exercise using the cycle ergo meter in laboratory testing. You are interested in the recovery rate of prolonged exercise, and the effects of fatigue. Follow the experimental procedures prescribed, and maintain the protocols required for the experiment.

Procedures

A pre test questionnaire was given to each participant to see if they were fit to do the test, whilst the questionnaire was being filled in all the equipment was checked for faults. I had to abide by the laboratory procedures, rules and regulations that were explained to me by the tutor.

Method

The first thing we did was to adjust the bike ergo meter for the individual participants, when the bike was adjusted the participant started a -4 minute rest period. Expired air samples were taken throughout the test, starting with x -6 minute resting samples, when all the resting samples had been taken, the participant began to pedal at 1050 kg.m.min-1 (70 rpm with a work load of .5kg on the cradle). A record of the VE, %O, then the VO was calculated for all of the minute samples. We recorded at least five scores of ‘steady state’ samples as the VO scores levelled off before the participant was allowed to stop peddling. We continued to take expired air samples as the subject recovered on the bike; we stopped taking samples when the subject reached his/her resting level.

The following equations were used to produce my results

· Work intensity (Kg.m.min-1) = Workload (kg) x One revolution (6m) x cadence (rpm)

· Work intensity (watts) = Kg.m.min-1 x conversion factor (0.16)

· VE (ATPS) = Volume of expired air (STPD)

(Collection time (mins) = L.min-1

· VO = VE {FIO  FEO}

100 = L.min-1

Definitions

· Resting VO is the average VO value taken before exercise commences.

· Oxygen Deficit is the highest initial deficit from resting levels to ‘steady state’ exercise levels.

· Steady state exercise is the average VO during exercise when the demand for oxygen is aerobically met & maintained.

· Oxygen debt is the volume of expired air & utilised oxygen in the time after steady state exercise during recovery over and above resting levels.

Is HDTV available currently on Comcast in Colorado?

Not at this time. We are planning to offer the service in some rebuild areas later this year.

When will HDTV be available?

Our plan is to launch HDTV in the metro Denver rebuild areas in August - the outer market areas are not yet determined.

Custom Essays on Comcast Brainwashing Employees

What programming will Comcast offer in HDTV?

Comcast will offer HBO and Showtime (one channel each) in HDTV plus a few local broadcast stations. We are still negotiating with the local broadcast stations for carriage rights.

How will I know when it is available in my area?

Comcast promotes new products & services to customers within an area within a few weeks of availability.

Will I need a new digital converter for HDTV?

Yes. The new converter will be available from Comcast when the service is launched.

Why should I want HDTV?

HDTV offers the best quality picture available today. Along with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio on some HDTV programming, it offers an unparalleled experience in Home Theater entertainment.

Can I record HDTV content? What equipment is required?

Recording HDTV on VHS or DVD requires specialized recording devices. Some HDTV recording devices are available today, but are very expensive and may not be compatible with the digital converter.

Will I see any impact on the quality of my programming if I dont have a HDTV?

Customers without a HDTV monitor will not be affected by the addition of HDTV on the system, nor will the format of any existing programming change as a result of adding HD programming on the system. HDTV channels are entirely separate channels from existing analog and digital channels.

Does HDTV-Ready mean I dont need a decoder?

No. HDTV-Ready means that the monitor can display HDTV signals, but a decoder is always required, and different HDTV signal sources (off-air, DBS, cable) require different decoders. Some HDTV sets are sold with an integrated decoder for use with either off-air broadcast HDTV signals or DBS HDTV signals. However, these decoders will not decode a HDTV signal on a cable plant, so a special Comcast digital converter is required to receive HD signals.

How much programming in this format can I expect to see in the next few years?

More and more content providers are adding HDTV programming to their lineups, and additional dedicated HD networks have been announced. The quantity and selection of available HD content will continue to increase, especially as more consumers upgrade to HDTV capable televisions. Plus, many more of the local broadcast stations are planning to offer HDTV in the future.

Do Satellite providers offer HDTV? Is this a competitive advantage for us?

Both DirecTV and Echostar currently offer a limited number of HD national channels in their lineup. DirecTV offers HDNet (a dedicated HD network), Showtime and HBO. Echostar currently offers HBO, Showtime, and Discovery HD. However, DBS does not provide any local broadcast stations in HD, and most likely will not offer these signals in the future due to bandwidth constraints. This offers Comcast a big competitive advantage.

Many researchers have suggested that culture have been important factor that affect the development of accounting systems in international accounting. Bloom and Naciri (18, page 7) defined culture as

¡°the total pattern of human behaviour and its products embodied in thought, speech, action and artifacts and dependent upon man¡¯s capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations through the use of tools, language and systems of abstract thought¡±

They used this definition based on the Websters Third New International Dictionary Unabridged (161). While Belkaoui (14) said that culture plays an important role in the organization of everyday understanding in accounting and implies that accounting knowledge is organized in a culturally standardized format which tells individuals how to react to a particular accounting phenomenon.

Cultures changes in different country have been proven when it is applied in accounting environment. This can be seen clearly in two different countries. According to Pourjalali and Meek (15), they explore the change in cultural values in Iran and found out four changes in cultural variables, which were lower individualism, large power distance, stronger uncertainty avoidance and higher masculinity. While in Spanish case, Blake have found out that the results are quite different from Iran case, which were higher individualism, small power distance and weaker uncertainty avoidance. These results might cause by the move from dictatorship to democracy in Spain. It shows that Spain and Iran have two different cultures that give impact on the accounting environment of respective country.

As we know, each country has different kind of culture, which makes them to use different kind of accounting systems. That is why we are having problem in differentiating financial statements in those countries. In order to overcome this problem, each country has to use standardized or universal accounting systems. However, this can¡¯t be happening because culture have been identified as the most important factors in influencing accounting systems and the process of accounting changes. This is proven in the two case studies that are stated above.

Much has happened in American history since 1. Throughout all those seventy years the United States has witnessed great developments of its society and economy and has also experienced great transformations. The connections between corporations and science and engineering establishments, credit cards and finally Reaganomics are the ones that I find the most important. All of them might be united by a common theme of boosting economic growth and promoting free market economy.

The development of big business gave new order to American society and economy. Although it brought deskilled workers, low standards of work and work relations that Porter calls in The Rise of Big Business, ‘the drive system’, corporations had also a positive influence on American economy. The big business connections with science and engineering establishments gave boost to ‘research and development of new products and processes’.¹ Different firms, such as mentioned by Porter, General Electric, AT&T, Du Pont, Eastman Kodak and many others developed their R&D departments. Corporations were constantly developing and enhancing their products and services so they could launch their high quality products to the market. So the customers could find a wide range of goods, spend their money and consequently make the economy tick faster. But to make R&D working the firms needed well educated and trained professionals to run the departments. Hence the universities got involved in the connections with corporations. ‘First true research and development laboratory in the United States, that of General Electric’² pioneered in the emergence of research and graduate studies programs at universities. Education system could meet the needs of the corporations, so the needs of the market. Trained people could find themselves as useful in the economic growth. As the century progressed the corporations strengthen their ties with the science, engineering establishments and universities. And later in that century another connection took part in the market development, that of military industrial complex.

As Hughes noted in American Genesis, it stimulated the growth of such large scale-technological systems as wireless telegraphy and telephony. The development of new products enhanced the competition in the market and that consequently led to the growth of economy.

Not only is the wide range of products important for the market development, but also an easy access to money. American banks found a solution to that problem by issuing credit cards. The two dominant national organizations, as Mandell calls them in The Credit Card Industry A History, BankAmericard and Master Charge were trying to beat each other in fight for the clients. The bigger number of credit cards in circulation means bigger profits. The banks make money by lending it. And with a credit card people do not have to worry about paying for something. One pays 1$ with a credit card today instead of paying for the same product 1.50$ next year. As Mandell noted, credit cards once reserved for only businesspeople and the wealthy, in the 170s were carried by nearly half of all American consumers. Banks were mailing their credit cards to their customers. The number of cards in circulation increased substantially. Most banks firstly concentrated on ‘upper middle income Americans’.³ This group thought to be the most creditworthy. And in fact it was. They were paying their interests on time, and banks did not get their interest income. Banks were forced to aim their strategy at lower income groups. Also college students, seen as future businesspeople or professionals, as Mandell writes, got their free credit cards. Banks were landing the money, the society was using its credit, buying goods, the companies offering the products and free market could thrive.

Since there was no need to worry about buying a product one day and paying for it another day, people could have more. Americans got used to the fact of being able to afford whatever they want, and they would not settle for less. After the oil embargo of 17 and the economic slump it would seem American society would have to do with less. President R. Reagan kept the standards of American life. He believed in free market and self-regulation. Reagan’s administration introduced De Regulation; the regulatory offices were taken off so free market could develop. Taxes were radically cut. And the process of converting government enterprises into privately owned companies implemented. So transportation, cleaning services, even police forces were open to privatization. In 18 the unemployment decreased and the economy regained much of its energy. The market was full of different goods and a service with varied prices, the competition was fighting the battle for the customers. Apart from Reagan’s sheer economic tactics; his military build up and SDI could be argued to have caused the economic slump in Russia and the end of the Cold War, which also had a positive influence on American free market economy. Even if not for long, as in 187 economy slumped again, Reaganomics stimulated the growth of American economy.

The growth is the fundamental goal of many economic systems. In theory, the whole system is wanted to expand and provide more businesses, more jobs, and more wealth for everyone. In practice, however, it is difficult to achieve the economic growth. All of the three developments, connections of corporation, credit cards and Reaganomics stimulated this growth in different aspects. Corporations mainly through connections with high technology industries, credit cards through the ability of customers to revolve the money in the market, Reaganomics through stimulating the economy in the crisis. All of them promoted rules of free market economy and that allowed the economy to grow.

Conflict Management

Abstract

Within my organization there are difficulties with conflict management. When dealing with conflict management internally one must see how the organization works, and how the polices are, as to what you can and cannot do. The management styles vary significantly and this causes the stress level to soar. Each have their own way, and it causes the others to suffer by not knowing what is going on. This paper will contain the differences between management.

Conflict Management

Conflict Management

Webster’s dictionary describes conflict as “ a competitive or opposing action of incompatibles antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons) b mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands.”(Merriam-Webster). Beyond these definitions there are two kinds of conflict that are involved in a work environment setting. (Organizational Behavior 7th Ed). They are “Substantive conflict and Emotional conflict”. Substantive conflict is what most managers’ experience. At my company there are four supervisors and one director. The supervisors get together to try to make things better for the company, and change certain goals and responsibilities to make the company run more efficiently. When they have a meeting with the director, it is like talking to a brick wall. She never wants to try anything new or change; it is her way or the high way. Substantive conflict is high in this case. Each supervisor tries to work through conflicts amongst themselves, and in most cases it is resolved and never goes any higher. For the most part, if the director wants something done, it is usually something that is not ever feasible in the time line that is given. This causes major conflict amongst her and the supervisor she has asked to do the tasks.

Conflict Management 4

The director is never open, or communicates properly to avoid miscommunications. Her style is one most wouldn’t agree with. It contradicts everything one is ever taught about conflict management. The fundamentals are easy I like to always use the do unto others philosophy. If you cannot negotiate, and be open to new ideas you will run into major conflicts amongst the managers, and employees of the company.

My techniques are I would be open in what I wanted out of everyone, and if there was a question, or an idea being open is the best approach. You never tell a manger or employee that you don’t want to hear what they have to say. By trying to listen, compromise, and be willing to adjust to change is what I like to do. However, this is not the case at my organization. For example, I was told that I was to enthusiastic about my job and had to mellow out a little on motivation, that I was to happy all the time and that was not excepted at this company. This is a great example of substantive conflict, I guess her views of where she wanted the company appearance should be was a 180 degrees different than mine.

Conflict Management 5

Emotional conflict is the next conflict. Again this is seen on a day-to-day basis in many originations. About every hour you hear an angered voice from the intercom, and hope that it is not your name being called to the directors office. Everyone cringes when you here the directors voice. You can never be right to her. Most days you have to defend your employees, and hear how you’re not doing your job right. When she calls certain employees in to her office, you can hear emotions raging. Sometimes you hear yelling, and screaming along with some not, so jester appropriate sayings.

Being aware, of how you can handle conflict, is the key to finding a happy medium to better managing conflict with employees and others. After taking the assessment twenty tests on conflict management gave me an insight to how I would deal with this subject. My result is as follows.

Conflict Management 6

Assessment 0 Results

Competing 10

Collaborating

Avoiding 8

Accommodating 6

The numbers indicate to me that I am a very competitive person, and tend to agree with most. On the other hand I need to work on avoiding and accommodating. As you can see it appears that I dont accommodate very much, this is do to the fact no room for error polices I have. Safety is the first step to keeping employees productive.

In conclusion, I find that my personal management preference is very different than my directors. Therefore, I am going to not deviate from my standards, but work through what I can at my current job to maintain structure. Dealing with conflict can be dealt with, however, finding the right happy medium is the key. Conflict is a two way street and has to be dealt with tact and without emotional connections.

Giving honor to God, President Jones, Chairperson Sis. Stoneham and all of the committee members before me. My name is Curtisha Shantell Williams and I am a graduating senior at Booker T.Washington High School and High School for Engineering Profession. I grew up in a family of believers in Christ. My parents are Sis. Donnie Williams and Rev. Curtis Williams. My parents were members of God’s Holy Sanctuary Baptist Church when I was born. At the age of my mother and I moved our membership to East Park Baptist Church, where I am currently still serving today. I became active in the church as a little girl. It all started out with Christmas and Easter speeches. I also participated in God’s Holy Infantry, the little drill team of our church. I later became active in the Disciples of Love Drill Team, the Youth Choir and the Sunday school which I am currently still participating in.

Academics are very important in my family. I have one particular aunt who is my special advisor in this area. My aunt Loraine better known as Sis. Stoneham has always told me, “Your future earnings are directly tied to how much education you receive.”

Her advice has made me decide to want to get my education so that I can get a job where I can earn a good sum of money. Coming into high school was a dramatic experience for me. I had to learn all the ins and outs of being a productive student. Currently I am a B average student and I was recently challenged to become a part of the honors program at Booker T. Washington. Having never been in honors it was a true challenge. My councilor saw potential in me that I might have never noticed if she didn’t challenge me to do the job. I feel that I have greatly benefited from this challenge. I am number 8 of 1 students in my senior class and my GPA is .10 on a 4.0 scale. In school I enjoy participating in the science club, health club, choir, and I am a proud member of the les’ petite debutantes. I am also a trainer for our outstanding royal blue and 4K-gold eagles track team. The clubs I participate in are the backbone of my personality. From the science club, which is my favorite subject, to the health club then the choir I am glad to be a part of them. Our motto in the les’ petite debutantes is “Always a lady.” This motto is important to me because no matter what you are going through, how you feel, or what you think, a woman should always display herself as a “Lady.” This motto is not only carried with me at school, but is always apart of my daily life.

After high school I plan to further my education at Prairie View University and major in Nursing. I feel that nurses are special people who play a big part in people’s lives. Being a nurse means a lot to me because I can help many people. Nurses are the ones who hold your hand and say everything will be ok and calms your spirit when you are scared. There has really been a high demand for nurses in the world which means I will be able to find a job wherever I decide to reside. I feel there is nothing wrong with wanting to make a lot of money and I know that RN’s make a lot of money and that’s what I want, so I am willing to work hard for it. After all the hard work I plan to put in school I feel I will then deserve to want to make a lot of money. Then I will be able to buy my Escalade that I really look forward to getting. Therefore education is very important in my life.

Custom writing service can write essays on My Goals

Right now, I am on the verge of getting to know my heavenly father. He has truly carried me a long way, from being a normal student, doing just enough to get by, to placing a person in my life that has challenged me to do better. He has really made a way for me. In the word of my favorite song, I recognize that there will be mountains that I will have to climb and battles that I will have to fight but I know the victory or defeat is up to me to decide. I can’t give up now because I have come too far to turn around and I know the Lord my God is by me all the way.

In the following essay I will discuss how Dickens creates suspense in “The Signalman” by exploring the settings and the characters. The novel was written by Charles Dickens in the 1th century. It is set in a deep cutting adjacent to a tunnel with a railway running through.

Suspense is created through supernatural, horror and ambiguity. A good suspense story should have all of these. I will explore these qualities which make up a good suspense story.

The story opens with the quote “Halloa! Below there” This short, but effective line becomes very decisive as the story unfolds. We dont know whos speaking and so creates tension already. The man he is shouting to below looks round to face the tunnel “Looked down the line”. Any normal person would look upwards in response to this. Again Dickens is creating the unexplainable which builds up the tension and suspense. essaybank.co.uk

At this time we dont know who either of the men is. We know it is a ghost story so which one if any is the ghost. He is making you ask yourself questions which create suspense. You are already hooked and trying to figure out who is the ghost. He then goes on to describe the man below “There was something remarkable in his manner of doing so”. This is evidence for the argument that he is possibly the ghost because of his weird actions. The actions create mystery which is effective to create the overall suspense. Also you still havent had any kind of a physical description of the signalman so at this time you dont even know if hes human or not and you cant just make an assumption, you have to read on

Order Custom Essay on How does Dickens creates suspense in “The Signalman”

The story is set in the nineteenth century, a time when supernatural powers were still believable so someone reading this at the time would feel more of the pressure. The scene is set within a deep cutting at twilight and because of the darkness the two men dont get to see each other properly until they are face to face which is too late if one man kills the other. “I was near enough to have touched him”. It makes you have the “Dont go down there” feeling so tension builds up more and more the closer they get to one another. Just before he goes down the cutting an unknown vibration shakes the ground “Vague vibration in the earth and air” He also uses a lot of effective adjectives like “Violent pulsation” this captures the senses and adds to the tension. This could be the final climax to the building pressure, but it ends up as being a train this; creates a lot of tension which is then lost after you are enlighten The cutting would be pretty dark; this darkness creates the suspended mood. It is also described as being “Extremely deep and unusually precipitous” and “Solitary and dismal”. It seems like the place is very isolated and cut off from the real world, the perfect place for supernatural happenings “Great dungeon”. The tunnel also creates suspension, why did he look down there in this first place and what could be down there It is described as “Barbarous, depressing and forbidding”. The smells and surroundings make him a little bit reluctant to descend “Air of reluctanceThe story is only spread over a couple of days, but that is all it takes for him to get involved, also the story only ever takes place within the cutting. Is this so none of the tension is lost? “But I expressly intend to make you another visit”. The two men meet both times at the bottom of the cutting at night “I will come at eleven”. This keeps the tension due to the darkness, It would probably be lost if they were to meet on a sunny midday. Also the darkness impairs the narrators vision so he cant be sure whats out there. The signalman is evidently going to be an important character once they get talking and his actions are very weird to start off with; He stands intently in the railway with his hand on his chin, not moving a muscle until they are face to face “Before he stirred I was near enough to have touched him”. Also when they do meet he makes no attempt to start the conversation, instead he looks at the red light “Look towards the red light” He seems very mysterious and unpredictable. As they begin to talk again the man becomes slightly hostile and the narrator speculates that he might be a ghost “This was a spirit”. This is a very tense point in the novel because the ghosts identity may have already been revealed, but the signalman begins to show fear and asks if they have met before. It makes you think, why should the signalman show any fear? After their conversation the man leaves and the signalman tells him that on his return journey not call out those words. “Halloa! Below there”. It builds tension over what these words really mean to the signalman and why he is scared of them.

The signalman himself looks mysterious “A dark sallow man”. This would add to the readers suspense and build up the tension as he gets closer.

They retreat to the signal box and from his long description you realise that he is quite a knowledgeable man “Worked at fractions and decimals”. If he is so clever why is he a signalman? He is also a very skilled workman ”Safest of men to be employed. These questions add mystery to his identity which in turn builds up the suspense. Within their talk, the signalman looks outside toward the tunnel more than once. This creates expectancy of whats going to happenIn the first conversation he tells the man that he is “troubled”. This makes you ask the question what is he troubled about and does it have anything to do with his weird actions previously? Could he be or knows the ghost? These questions make you think about whats coming round the corner. This also builds suspense.

On the mans return visit he is told about the mysterious figure and how it disappeared. “It was gone”. This long passage describing the ghosts actions adds tension and expectancy that it will come again. He also clears up his odd actions (when he looked down the tunnel). The ghost says those very same words. We now know that he is not the ghost so some tension is lost but it is now a matter of if the man will see the ghost and what it will say. He also tells the man of the lady who died in the carriage just after he had seen the figure “Within six hours after this appearance, the memorable accident happen”. You begin to associate the spectre with death and whos death will it contribute to next. The story is written in first person so it feels like it is actually happening at the same time you read it. This is evident when he talks with and about the signalman “You look at me as if you had a dread of me”. Neither you or him know what the response is going to be. His manner is described as “seemed to make the place strike colder to me, but I said no more”. He describes it as it happens which adds suspense. This a weird description to give someone, could he be the ghostAs you here about the ghost, the gentlemans actions are very dismissive. This is true as it would be the natural response, but as they are in a deep cutting which hasnt much human contact you begin to believe him. The man has the same reactions when he hears about the second ghost. “Deception of his sense of sight”. You have the same time to make a decision as he does, but you already know there will be a ghost.

The man seems brave and dismissive of things which could potentially harm him. Maybe too dismissive and this could get him into trouble, but he doesnt seem like he is a victim. The signalman has this role. In the end it is the gentlemans fault that the signalman dies because if he hadnt called down to him in the first place, the signalman would have looked up as the train came down the tunnel. “Below there, look out”. The first words of the story are the most decisive words of the story. Could it have been fate? And no matter what had happened between the start of the story and his death, it couldnt have been prevented. “The words which I myself - not he had attached”. He obviously feels responsible for his death and you feel that if he hadnt associated himself with the man none of this would of happened. This is quite a mysterious and even scary thoughtIt is evident that Dickens creates a lot of suspense throughout the story with the opening words and as he descends the cutting, looking at the signalman whose actions are very weird. Suspense is also created as the signalman tells the gentleman of the weird happenings recently. The settings are very mysterious and even prone to something like this happening. Dickens ability to bring mystery, unexplainable, and first person narrative add up to make suspense in the story.
